As winter comes to an end, February is the month for Half Term holidays, Valentine's Day, World Nutella Day (5th), and Random Acts of Kindness Day (17th). It also marks the point at which, in 2020, we were seeing the first signs of the pandemic. As I write this, I find it hard to believe that we’re about to enter our third year of having to constantly adapt and modify our everyday behaviours to help stop the virus spreading. It seems that every time we think life may be getting back to normal, there’s another setback. While this means that there is no room for complacency, I was encouraged to read that recent research from mentalhealth.org.uk shows that the majority of UK adults who have experienced stress or anxiety due to the pandemic have discovered numerous coping strategies that have helped, such as taking a walk, spending time in nature, and speaking to family and friends. What this signals to me is the importance of a healthy lifestyle, meaningful activities, and of course, positive social contacts. Here at UseLocally Magazine we encourage everyone to take time out for their mental health whenever they need to. If we can stick together and support each other through whatever comes our way, we will emerge at the other end of this awful time stronger, fitter, and better people. Until next time, stay safe and stay positive.

Work begins on Landmark Bomber Sculpture Construction work for a life-size Lancaster Bomber sculpture ’On Freedom’s Wings’ is now underway, thanks to corporate and public donations. Mounted on a steel frame, to give the impression it is in flight on the horizon, the sculpture will be bigger than the Angel of the North. The landmark will be built on high ground just off the A46 at Norton Disney and will be seen by more than 34,000 drivers every day. The project was brought to life by The Bomber County Gateway Trust to mark the historic link that Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire shared with RAF Bomber Command during the second world war. Around £150,000 has been raised so far for the project with a further £400,000 worth of goodwill services and materials from local businesses. However, at least £90,000 more is needed for the steel work.

A Winter Walk at

WHISBY NATURE PARK 4.8 miles

Whisby Nature Park is a great place for winter walks. The paths are good and well signed. We did this walk recently on a sunny winter’s morning and thoroughly enjoyed it.

T

he walk begins at the Visitor Centre where there is a café, toilets and a gift shop. Walking past the hide and the bird feeding station you reach a post which gives directions for all the walks by coloured arrows. Following the Coot Walk, the red route, we took a circular path round Coot and West Lakes where we saw various species of ducks. We then followed the green and black arrows, Magpie and Willow Walks, another slightly longer circular route. First, we had to take the bridge over the railway line (Lincoln to Nottingham) and walk past Dragonfly Lake before turning right and completing an anticlockwise circle through woodland and grazing land. The black route, an extension of the green route, took us alongside Willow Lake where we saw a beautiful family of swans. The view over this lake is really pretty and we could see Lincoln Cathedral in the distance. The end of this walk brought us back to the bridge over the railway but this time instead of going down the steps, we went down the 8

slope and followed the orange route, the Grebe Lake walk. Lots of wildlife here, ducks, moorhens, starlings and robins to name a few. Arriving back at the marker post we retraced our steps to the car park (£1 per day in winter). Throughout the walk there are

| Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

plenty of opportunities to watch the wildlife from various hides situated around the park. In the hide nearest to the Visitor Centre, posters help you to identify some of the birds and ducks that you may have seen. The Newark Rambler

BEAUMOND HOUSE HOSPICE CARE You can contact the hospice on 01636 610556 or email info@beaumondhouse.co.uk.

How do you raise the money which does not come from the NHS Because we have to raise the rest of the money ourselves, we try to suggest different ways people can support us so that something appeals to everyone. Every year we are amazed at the ideas and generosity of those who support us, but our own events such as the Dragon Boat Race, Sky Dives and Wing Walks in particular are fun ways to support us. We also raise funds through our three charity shops, one off and regular donations, and through those who chose to remember us in their will. What can local people do to help Beaumond House Not only do we rely heavily on this local community raising funds but also to volunteer to support us – we use volunteers across all aspects of the organisation, from helping in the shops, to talking to and enjoying activities with day-therapy patients, driving, cooking and office based work. We’d love to hear from anyone who can offer some time and or skills to help us – there is always so much to do to keep the organisation running- so the generosity of a huge team of volunteers helps us do this.

Cathy Lowe – Head of Fundraising and Marketing How much does it cost to run all of the services at Beaumond House It costs around £1.3million every year to continue to run all of the services at Beaumond House. Where does all of that money come from We currently receive around £500,000 from the Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS) in return for providing the services of our inpatient unit., our Hospice at Home Team and the Day-therapy unit. We do not receive any CCG funding for other services such as complementary therapy and bereavement support.

How can I make a donation to support your work Its really easy to donate to support Beaumond House – just go to our website beaumondhouse.co.uk and click donate and you can choose how much and how often you would like to support us. How much of your money is spent on supporting local people It is important that we tell people that all of the money they donate to and raise for Beaumond House is spent in this local area to support local people.

Details will be announced shortly via our website and social media channels. Find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn via @beaumondhouse Please tell us about Beaumond House Hospice Care and how the hospice supports the local community We have 4 in-patient beds for people with palliative care needs. It might be a short stay is needed to monitor and control symptoms, an admission for extra care when needed and also people can choose the hospice as the place they wish to die. Our day therapy provides therapeutic activities where people come for the day to learn something new, enjoy activities and can have a listening ear and a chat. Hospice care is also brought to you and our Hospice at Home service provides compassionate support when extra care is needed as someone’s condition progresses. We are contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, to provide a friendly ear, general information or to signpost patients, relatives and carers to appropriate resources, services, and self-help groups in the Newark area. What does hospice care mean Hospice care aims to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of people who have a terminal illness or a long-term condition that cannot be cured, also known as life-limiting. It is free for patients, their carers and family members. Hospice care can be provided at any stage of a person’s condition, not just at the end of their lives. It can include symptom management, and social, practical, emotionaland spiritual support. It helps people live as fully and as well as they can to the end of their lives, however long that may be. This type of care is also known as palliative care and can also be provided in your own home. Who works at Beaumond House? Beaumond House is a nurse led hospice. Registered Nurses and Health Care Assistants provide the care with the help and support of the whole team. Staff in housekeeping, catering, administration, finance and human resources all help to ensure the hospice and the services run

Louise Sinclair – Head of Clinical Services smoothly. We also have wonderful volunteers who help in most aspects of the hospice to support patients directly or volunteering their skills in the kitchen, garden, reception and each department. How can people access support from the hospice? We try and make this as simple as we can! If you or someone you know needs palliative care and support then please ring, email, or call into Beaumond House. It maybe that your nurse or doctor also recommends a referral to the hospice for support. The hospice provides for Newark and a 15 mile radius of the hospice.

Spring into life with a good read The final bitter throes of winter will soon pass, so how about some optimistic, nonfiction reading as February comes into view? Books Do Furnish a Life by Richard Dawkins Including conversations with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Steven Pinker, Matt Ridley; Books Do Furnish a Life is divided by theme, including celebrating nature, exploring humanity, and interrogating faith, bringing together Richard Dawkins’ forewords, afterwords and introductions to the work of some of the leading thinkers of our age. and primetime TV favourite, reveals for the first time the true story of grit and graft beneath the famous Essex sparkle.

Small Island by Phillip Parker The shape and location of Britain’s landmass has not always been the same, with an identity that’s always been on the move.

In this refreshingly candid memoir, Denise speaks openly and sensitively about her rollercoaster career, from The Big Breakfast in her early twenties to a decade grafting through theatre jobs and children’s TV shows. She describes her challenges offscreen and behind the headlines, as her heart was broken in a very public relationship, with her every move printed in the tabloids thanks to her phone being tapped.

But, by knowing more about the 12 pivotal moments that occurred over a 2,000-year period, we can not only gain a full sense of our British history, but also an understanding of where we are heading, and that’s what Philip Parker reveals brilliantly across 12 defining maps. and white and read all over? An embarrassed penguin, a sunburnt elephant, a newspaper! The reaction to these jokes can circumnavigate the whole spectrum of comedy, from hearty chortles to room-filling groans. In many senses, writer, broadcaster and former politician Gyles Brandreth is going for the latter in this collection with a smorgasbord of some of the best and worst jokes ever (plus a few riddles to keep readers on their toes). From ‘Knock, knock’ to ‘Waiter waiter’, with some funny elephants and giraffes thrown in for good measure, there’s also a bit of expert joke advice, so you can show others just how funny you can be! HOROSCOPES BY RUSSELL GRANT

ARIES

March 21st - April 20th Prioritise and take time to reflect. You ve reached a point in life where you need to decide about certain relationships and situations. If other people s demands and expectations of your behaviour are too high, don t be afraid to set boundaries. A little reflection at the beginning of each month can help you see what in your life is not serving you and which relationships work for you.

TAURUS

April 21st - May 21st It s now that you have the power to take control of your life. You ve made commitments that were too big for you and you find it difficult to say no. You feel trapped in either your career or in a relationship. Now you re looking at the value of friendships. Too many people have had too big an impact on your life, so it is important to establish boundaries.

GEMINI

May 22nd - June 21st Clear the air before February begins. Take this opportunity to be kind and generous with colleagues and friends who have been in conflict. Strange events are taking place now. While these might seem alarming, it could be just what you need to get rid of stagnant energy at your home and workplace. You re starting to seriously consider the value of some friendships.

CANCER

June 22nd - July 23rd When you think about all you ve gone through, all the accomplishments you ve achieved and all the times you ve had to overcome, you should be so proud. There are still people who believe that they can impact you. It s time to take initiative and change the direction of your life. Take responsibility for your own life. Be more assertive in your relationships.

LEO

24th - August 23rd You re ready to have some good times as February begins. You ve been working hard. Your responsibilities have been taken seriously. Now is the time for your inner child. Your days should be filled with activities that you find enjoyable and enjoy. You need some time for yourself. You re worthy of this. If you are more involved in pleasure, your re

VIRGO

August 24th - Sept 23rd It s possible to achieve the goals that you have been working towards. Your hard work will begin paying off in many ways. It s about more than the money. It s all in the passion, the energy, the effort and the hard work that you put into building a foundation for your life. Romance is the best way to express your love and appreciation to your partner.

LIBRA

September 24th - Oct 23rd You may have struggled with making big decisions in the past so February could be an overwhelming month. The more you think it through, the more confusing you ll become. Retire. Clear your mind. You won t make the right decision if your mind is running at high speed all the time. An intimate relationship can lead to confusion. A person you love may expect too much.

SCORPIO

October 24th - Nov 22nd Talking to family members can help you relieve any anxiety. It is a time of big changes. This makes it easy to be both excited and nervous. February is a powerful period for healing family wounds. The challenges you face in your own home could help you learn valuable lessons. There may be many opinions between you and your partner on an issue of morality, education or medical.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23rd - Dec 21st You might find yourself in a difficult position as the month begins. Although you are likely to prefer your own solutions, there is one situation where you might benefit from the advice of another person. You might feel obligated to fulfil some obligations for a family member or partner. This may be an inconvenience for them but they will not be able to do it alone.

CAPRICORN

December 22nd - Jan 20th As the month begins, it seems like your sensitivity levels have gone on overload. Don t believe every word you hear. Avoid drama, in particular the drama of others. If you re having difficulty coping emotionally, get support from a friend. Romance is not about pretending you don t feel affected by your best friend's or partner s actions.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - Feb 19th It can feel like your life has been on an emotional rollercoaster. As you get over this, you will be able to open new doors. It s time for you and your partner to let it go. Old situations, ties, people or habits. New things are waiting for them. If a relationship feels stale, boring or uninteresting, but you keep holding on to it because it feels familiar, then you are trading your happiness for security.

PISCES

February 20th - March 20th You will set goals for the month and be focused on what you want to do. You re making good progress and the more you learn the skills you need to succeed, the more confidence you will have. Romance is about you feeling more confident and independent with your partner. You don t need the other s approval to pursue the things you want.

Are you one of over a million people missing out on Universal Credit?

The UK has a welfare safety net, yet sadly many are dropped or miss out. Changes at the end of last year to the flagship, catch-all Universal Credit programme mean over half a million people who weren t eligible now are. I want to show you how to check whether you re one of them. And don’t automatically assume it’s not you. The benefits net stretches up higher than many think. I’d certainly be checking this out if you have total family income under £30,000, especially if you have kids (I’m not saying you’ll get it, just that it’s worth the time to check). Yet even some earning as high as £50,000 may just be eligible if you’ve heavy rental costs.

Use a 10-minute Universal Credit & benefits checker tool to see if you’re due. While there are over a million

entitled to, and how much it could be. Christine did this recently and emailed to say she would be over £2,000 a year better off: “We completed it to see if we're eligible for housing benefit. It said we were, plus carer's allowance. We applied and will get £40 per week backdated until September. We're over the moon. Can only encourage others to do it, you'll never know unless you try. Thanks, Martin and staff.” If you tried before November, it can be worth trying again.

people likely missing out on Universal Credit, that number is far bigger if you look at all benefits. For example, pension credit is widely unclaimed – it’s thought around 40% of those eligible don’t get it even though they could.

Around 600,000 extra working families are now eligible for universal credit due to changes that hit at the end of last year. Work allowances increased by £42 per month. This is the amount those in households with children, or those with 'a limited capacity for work', can earn before Universal Credit starts to drop. l If you earn over your work allowance, you keep more of the benefit. The amount of Universal Credit you receive is reduced if you earn over this, but now you keep 45p per £1 of earnings, rather than 37p. l

Together these mean both that more people are eligible and that many who already get it now get more. On legacy benefits (eg tax credits or income support) – does Universal Credit pay more? There are three million people still on old style benefits: tax credits, income support, housing benefit, income-based jobseeker's allowance and income-related employment & support allowance. If you’re on one of those, you'll eventually be moved to universal credit which replaces them all. Yet this may take years. So it’s worth checking if you’d be better off switching now.

a result. So I’ve three simple steps for you. Step 1: Check if you’re in a category likely to be better off switching. If you work and pay rent, especially in a city, then you’re in the sweet spot where this may work. Same too if you’re at the higher end of earnings that still allow you to get benefits. On the other hand, if you’re a single parent and/or have a disability and you work but don’t pay rent, or you’re selfemployed earning under £1,200/mth, then you’re likely to be worse off on Universal Credit. Same too if you’ve a decent whack of savings, especially if they’re over the £16,000 cut-off. Step 2: If you’re in the right category, use a benefits calculator. It will tell you if you’re likely to be better off and by how much. But bear in mind these tools are ready reckoners that don’t include everything – so only treat this step as a jumping off point to see if you should do more.

Step 3: If the calculator shows you’ll make a decent gain, don’t do anything without one-on-one help. There are a lot of changes in the move to Universal Credit… l You’re usually paid monthly and must budget (tricky for some with impulse control or addiction problems). l It’s one payment to the household (a possible issue for those in financially abusive relationships). l The first payment takes five weeks (though you can get an advance to cover it). l The work rules may be different; some have to do 35 hours of ‘work-related’ activities a week. And most importantly if you have certain debts, including council tax, rent and energy bills, up to 25% can be taken off the standard Universal Credit payment which can scupper things (and that’s not included by the calculators). So you can see why I say go through it with a professional before taking the plunge.

The government runs a free guidance and information service called www.moneyhelper.org.uk, which offers the option to chat (online or phone) with an adviser – make use of it. Or you can get free one-on-one benefits check-ups from www.citizensadvice.org.uk or www.advicelocal.uk.

This isn’t easy though, and you need to get it right, as once you request to go on Universal Credit, there’s no going back – even if you find out that you’re getting less as

Ingredients (serves 6) • 150g unsalted butter (at room temperature), plus extra for greasing • 500g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 500g dried pitted dates • 1 orange • 2 chai tea bags • 20g of bicarb • 350g dark brown sugar

Jamie Oliver’s Chai Sticky Date Pudding with Toffee Sauce

• 5 large free-range eggs

Introduction

For the Toffee Sauce • 125g double cream

There has been a tradition in recent years to let our Christmas flavours and tastes extend into the new year, and I really like that. After all, why should it be that we can’t enjoy turkey in spring, or add brandy butter to our desserts in summer. Dates are one of those fruits that count as another festive filler that seems to be forgotten about during other times of the year, but I don’t see why – they’re sweet, full of texture and actually really versatile. So as we work our way through winter, why not extend that homely, rustic feeling with this date and toffee pudding. It’s warm, tasty and reassuring; and unlike Christmas, it won’t cost you the earth!

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C and place a tray of water in the bottom (this creates steam to keep the pudding moist), then butter and flour a 25cm tin. Now chop the pitted dates, and zest the orange. 2. Boil 400ml of water, turn the heat off, then add the tea bags and infuse for 3mins. Boil again, 28

whisk in the bicarb and add the dates. Leave to one side to cool to room temperature. 3. Next, cream the butter and sugar in a food processor until light and fluffy. Now whisk the eggs, vanilla, orange zest, golden syrup and treacle and pour into the butter mixture in stages, beating until smooth each time. Sieve the flour and fold gently into the batter. Stir in

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 50g golden syrup • 75g black treacle

• 50g unsalted butter • 50g dark brown sugar • 30g golden syrup • 1 lug of brandy the date mixture, then pour into the Bundt tin. 4. Bake for one hour, or until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tins for 5mins. 5. Pop all the sauce ingredients in a small pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Simmer for 5mins, stirring, then remove from the heat. 6. Finally, invert the pudding onto a platter and baste with a little of the sauce. Serve with clotted cream and the remaining sauce on the side.

out certain things that give me incredible satisfacttion. I look forward to these co oming round, and their emergence is always very special. The firrst snowdrop in January; the firsst daffodil in February.

I think if a cross-section of people are asked to name the thing in a garden that gives them joy and a feeling of admiration beyond anything else, a good number will choose the rose. Think about it, is there anything else that offers such a breadth of colour, such a contradiction of beauty and danger (in the sense of a seductive flower and the prickly thorns that linger just a few inches down), or that offers a bouquet that has melted the hearts of a thousand romantics!

These are the typess of flowers that mark a change in or a progression of the season, and that always fills me with hope and expectation. You know these beautiful elementss will always arrive, but still, it’s a relief when they do!

Okay, so yes, a rose sometimes can seem so-and-so, perhaps because we embrace them so fully in our lives, and I accept there is something perhaps even a little cliched about the simple rose these days. However, I will be so bold as to say this - a garden without a fragrant rose isn’t much of a gard den att alll!

I have also really ta aken a shine to the aubrieta in recent years. It’s that beautiful tum mbling purple spray of miniature e-coloured flowers that will cascade off rocks, boulders and other inhospittable lumps in a way that bring th hem life and beauty. The flowerss almost resemble little four-leaf clov vers, and perhaps it’s that expression n of happiness and d love thatt mak kes this such ha winner in every wa ay.

For other times of the year, I will pick

Finally, I would loo ok to the sweet pea. They are just so versatile – sow individually in roott trainers or in pots filled with seed compost, choose pretty much any colour across the spectrum m, are perfect in borders, and you ca an even get the seeds in the ground d in any range from November th hrough to June.

For me, they are the ultimate, and a great pleasure. Of course, tending to a garden is all about personal taste. These are some of my favourites, but I know reading this you may well feel I have it completely wrong. That’s the beauty of gardening – it’s a landscape that’s entirely yours to do entirely what you will with, and d we wiill alll agree thatt’s wonderful.
