“We’re all going on a Summer holiday…” July marks the start of the long break for pupils, students and teachers across the UK and it’s anticipated that millions of us will be jetting off on holiday for sand, sea, swimming pools, sangria and sunbeds – especially after all the limitations that were placed on us during the last two Summers. One of the many benefits of the Summer is the positive effect that it has on many people’s mental health. The sun gives us more vitamin D, which raises energy levels and just simply makes us feel happier. So there’s no excuse for not getting out and about in the sunshine (safely, of course)! It's also Plastic Free July, which has grown from a small campaign that started in 2011 in Australia to a global phenomenon known around the world with millions of participants from numerous different countries – no doubt helped by the recent focus on the climate crisis. The purpose of the campaign is to not just highlight the damage that single-use plastics can do, but also to provide resources and ideas to help us reduce our plastic waste every day at home, work, school, and even at your local café. Visit www.plasticfreejuly.org to find out how you can take part. Whatever July has in store for you, we hope you manage to have at least a short break away from your routine and spend some time in the sun. Even if you can’t take a plane to somewhere warm and exotic, our region is abundant with beautiful and inspirational places where you can relax, get up close and personal with nature, and feed your body and soul.

Community News
Newark and Sherwood support for community football and cultural events NEWARK has a vibrant football scene at both youth and senior level and Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with YMCA Newark and Sherwood, is making a firm commitment to not only strengthen community football provision in the district but to also provide a venue for larger scale cultural events. Funded by both the District Council and the YMCA, new stands and seating will be installed at the YMCA Community and Activity Village, Bowbridge Road, Newark to achieve three things. Firstly, by introducing the stands, other events
and activities can take place at the Village, on the scale of events such as the Newark Festival. Utilising periods when the pitches are not used for football, the Village will be able to host more activities and events for the residents of, and visitors to, the district which will be a huge boost for the local community. Secondly, the seating will allow the Village to welcome more significant footballing opportunities to the district, such as County championship matches, which require a higherlevel pitch provision than the district currently has. Finally, the seating could allow the ground to be re-graded to a level which allows up to step five football to be played, future-proofing the facility A planning application for the additional stands has now been made. For further information about the facilities at the YMCA Community and Activity Village, please visit their website at www.ymcanewarksherwood.org
CHARLES’ CHALICE GOES ON DISPLAY A chalice that once touched the lips of King Charles I has gone on display at the National Civil War Centre in Newark. Loaned by St Mary Magdalene Church, the stunning silver cup is reputed to have been used by the King while taking communion on his frequent visits to the town. Made in London in 1624, just two years before Charles’ coronation, the Chalice of Albion is of the finest quality silver. It’s adorned with the maker’s initials RP and engraved as the gift of Richard Jackson and Robert Beck.
The remarkable object has kindly been loaned by The Parochial Church Council of St. Mary with St. Leonard, Newark, Notts. It has been on limited display in the church at a few events over the
years but will now be available for the public to view for a full year at the National Civil War Centre. The chalice has now been installed as part of the museum’s The World Turned Upside Down Exhibition which exposes the causes and consequences of the Civil War with a fascinating focus on how individual lives were affected. The National Civil War Centre is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and admission is currently half price for Newark and Sherwood residents.

Work starts on the new artificial turf hockey pitch at Magnus Work has begun on the refurbishment of the artificial turf hockey pitch at Magnus Church of England Academy which will secure Newark Hockey Club’s long term future at the site, its home for the last 20 years, as well as a great new facility for the academy students and the wider sporting community of the Town.
N
ewark and Sherwood District Council is providing the initial funding to upgrade the pitch, which will be paid back by Magnus from the leasing fees through a community use agreement. In addition to the pitch upgrade Newark and Sherwood District Council will carry out a number of further improvements to make it one of the best hockey pitches in the East Midlands. The old artificial turf surface, installed in 2001, and its underlying shock pad will be

replaced, and new LED lighting will be installed to the existing lighting columns. Additional grant funding opportunities are being explored by the District Council and Newark Hockey Club for support towards the cost of replacing the existing goals and the provision of new dug outs for the teams playing at the site. As well as the District Council financing the project it will also take a lead in the operational management of the pitch by agreement with Magnus through its leisure management

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at keeping our money safe online. Staying one step ahead of the fraudsters isn’t a battle just reserved for those who patrol the internet. The unregulated nature of the world’s biggest information source means we need to take control of our own vigilance. The good news is that by following a few easy steps, you can protect yourself from the dark forces at work across the web. Firstly, when visiting a site, in the web address at the top, look for an ‘s’ after ‘http’ at the beginning of the line. The lack of an ‘s’ doesn’t directly imply you are on a scam website, but it is telling you that the
security certificate is inadequate, and you should refrain from entering personal information. Some browsers – Google Chrome being one – add a padlock icon denoting any website that is fully secure, or the web address could be shown in green. The highest form of encryption for any site will show the website name before the address, also. Mostly, ask yourself if what’s being offered is realistic. On the internet, just as in real life, if something you see online appears too good to be true – particularly if you’ve clicked on an advert or had a popup appear on your screen – it probably is. Also have a look for how well written and presented the site is. There is a very real correlation between the
14 |
trustworthiness of a site and the attention paid to spelling, punctuation and grammar. It may not surprise you to hear that few scammers are fully adept in the finer workings of the English language, particularly if that site is being run many thousands of miles from the UK, and authentic marketing will almost always look professional in style and content. Furthermore, as much as Google may at times frustrate us by offering a multitude of options that are almost bewildering in number, it remains a great source for checking what we know. So if a site looks suspicious put its name into Google. If it’s a known rogue business then there’s a good chance it’s being discussed across the web. Finally, if you are purchasing online, use a credit card or trackback financial tool, such as PayPal. That way if something does go awry, you have the security of reclaiming your money.

HOROSCOPES BY RUSSELL GRANT
ARIES
March 21st - April 20th Now is the time to join a group and participate in activities that encourage and motivate you. The time you spend on mundane chores or over-done tasks can only leave you feeling exhausted and frustrated. The time you spend with yourself is not wasted because sometimes you should be by yourself to help you relax from the pressures of your day.
TAURUS
April 21st - May 21st You may want to increase your knowledge, talents or experience as great opportunities await discovery. Do not delay. Now is the perfect time to take action. Are you currently in a relationship? Be careful about disclosing too much about your past too soon. If you've been together with your partner for some time, you'll know when to talk about a sensitive topic.
GEMINI
May 22nd - June 21st The month begins at an intersection. A crucial decision needs to be taken and only you can decide the next steps. You've come a long way but this is just the beginning. It's your choice which path to choose. Don't let anyone affect your decision! Your partner or a friend who has a penchant for routines will attempt to hold you back from moving forward.
CANCER
June 22nd - July 23rd You can anticipate the future but nothing is guaranteed. It's a matter of preparing yourself for change. Something you've been dreaming about for a while is beginning to take shape and come to fruition. An energy boost is felt when you're in a committed relationship and it will make you feel excited about what's on the horizon for you both.
LEO
24th - August 23rd Set a goal and adhere to it. Speed and accuracy are crucial when it comes to family and business matters. In addition, you must be capable of sitting, smiling and unwinding from time to time. You believed that you were able to trust somebody but there's an impression on the 8th that they're not being completely truthful with you.
VIRGO
August 24th - Sept 23rd This July's experiences will be profoundly meaningful, and as you look at the facets of your life from different perspectives, you'll feel your perception and understanding grow. If your relationship with a loved one isn't the most exciting, it's possible to change things up. There might have to be a romantic getaway to give you the chance to connect physically and emotionally.
LIBRA
September 24th - Oct 23rd Sometimes, the most difficult tasks are essential for your learning process. Don't be enticed to cut corners. Get rid of the habit by paying attention to each action now. It's not necessarily easy to accept forgiveness but the ability to let go of past resentments will allow you to move on without emotional baggage. Talk about a painful experience from the past and take time to let go.
SCORPIO
October 24th - Nov 22nd A rift is brewing as you are caught among a crowd of people who have opposing goals. Do your best to avoid getting involved in the conflict. Keep your ears and eyes open to be aware of any dispute within your vicinity. Be mindful if you feel that an acquaintance isn't telling the truth. Be aware of what's being said about you since whispers are likely to spread and become twisted.
SAGITTARIUS
November 23rd - Dec 21st The effort of putting issues with your relationships in order is crucial. However, you shouldn't get so involved that it makes it difficult to stay in touch with the people you love. You might have been so focused on your issues that you've not thought about how much someone depends on you. If your partner doesn't feel like they're as active or adventurous as you.
CAPRICORN
December 22nd - Jan 20th A new partnership will be the most challenging. Are you willing to take the risk? If you don't go with your heart, you'll wonder whether you should. Don't believe in what others are telling you, even if they claim that they've got your interests in mind. Follow your instincts. You're at the edge of a significant life shift. The only thing you need to do is breathe deeply and get going.
AQUARIUS
January 21st - Feb 19th Your ability to make people feel relaxed and comfortable makes you extremely popular. However, be sure that your colleagues and friends don't start demanding too much of you. Even strangers and friends will often seek out your guidance and assistance. People are impressed by your personality and kindness and you're a significant influence on your friends.
PISCES
February 20th - March 20th Making your own decisions can create a more accessible and healthier path than allowing others to influence your choices and guide you. It's possible to remind someone of the importance of not worrying about their work and other responsibilities constantly. Are you married? A joint commitment can aid you in forming a solid bond that can become more valuable than gold.

Take a ‘Space Voyage’ through Southwell Minster A Spectacular Son-et-Lumiere experience produced by Artistic Collaboration ‘Luxmuralis’
A
n opportunity to ponder our relationship with the planet Earth and beyond is explored in a fantastic sound and light experience. Installations of sound and light art that will take you on a journey through space, see galaxies emerge above you and to explore humanities ambition to adventure beyond. The audience takes an immersive journey through the cathedral whilst beautiful space-themed projections highlight the stunning architecture of the Minster - all set to bespoke music. Just as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins stated: “We are so tiny in the system of things” Artist Peter walker says: “We are all responsible for this small planet that we started to explore in the 1960’s, Climate Change is part of the narrative. The artwork is about reflecting inwards as much as it is about reflecting outwards, and about how we take care of our small piece of the Universe.” Glenn Formoy, Head of Marketing & Events at Southwell Minster says: ‘Space Voyage’ is a spectacular immersive journey for people to walk through and explore the space of the Cathedral in a new light, the artwork asks visitors to look out into space and think about what humans have achieved in our place in the world and we can’t wait to share this incredible installation
with the public. We know how popular the theme of space is with adults and children alike and when Space Voyage visited
Rochester Cathedral last year, every single ticket sold out – so don’t miss out!
To view the installation when it was at Rochester Cathedral in 2021, please see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sfGSLv2IiE Space Voyage runs at Southwell Minster from 12-16 September 2022 and lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. Ticket-only. Tickets are available from https://www.southwellminster.org/space-voyage

Yotam Ottolenghi’s Pappardelle with Rose Harissa, Black Olives and Capers Introduction
Ingredients
I find there is no better dish to eat in the summer evenings than pasta. Al fresco, with the late sunshine and a glass of red or white wine, I struggle to think of a better combination with which to while away those elongated evenings.
(serves 4) • 2 tbsp of olive oil
‘Pappare’ means ‘to gobble up’, in Italian, which is the destiny of this dish. I like it spicy, but the quantity of harissa can easily be reduced. Make the sauce three days ahead if you like and keep in the fridge until needed.
• 3 tbsp Rose Harissa
Method
1. Put the oil into a large sauté pan, for which you have a lid, and place on a medium high heat. Once hot, add the onion and fry for 8 minutes, stirring every once in a while, until soft and caramelised. 2. Add the Rose Harissa, tomatoes, olives, capers and ½ teaspoon of salt and continue to fry for 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the tomatoes start to break down. Add 200ml of water and stir through.
• 1 large onion, thinly sliced (220g) • 400g cherry tomatoes, halved • 55g pitted Kalamata olives, torn in half • 20g baby capers
3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium low, cover the pan and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the lid of the sauce and continue to cook for 4–5 minutes, until the sauce is thick and rich. Stir in 10g of the parsley and set aside. 4. Meanwhile, fill a large pot with plenty of salted water and place on a high heat. Once boiling, add the pappardelle and cook according to the packet instructions, until al dente. Drain well.
34 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts
• 500g dried pappardelle pasta (or another wide, flat pasta) • 15g parsley, roughly chopped • 120g Greek-style yoghurt • salt 5. Return the pasta to the pot along with the harissa sauce and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. Mix together well, then divide between four shallow bowls. Serve hot, with a spoonful of yoghurt and a final sprinkle of parsley.

Big-time Books This month, three titles to look out for that are brimming with imagination and creativity. The Comic Book Lesson by Mark Crilley Perhaps the one distraction for younger readers when it comes to tutorials is the fact that many of them are just a little… well, boring. Thus, to present the subject matter in a way that guides someone through a story, as well as building practice, knowledge and confidence, is to be applauded. That’s what illustrator and graphic novelist Mark Crilley has done across two books now – the hugely successful The Drawing Lesson; and now this follow-up, The Comic Book Lesson. The book follows the story of Emily, an enthusiastic young comics fan and aspiring creator who has a story she needs to tell. A series of friends help her blend these teaching moments into a sweet, clever, and poignant story, with each lesson building off the previous information and skills presented. Published by Ten Speed Press on July 5th Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin Two kids meet in a hospital gaming room in 1987 and their love of video games becomes a shared world -- of joy, escape and fierce competition. When, eight years later, the pair spot each other in a crowded train station, they are catapulted back to that moment. The spark is
immediate, and together they get to work on what they love - making games to delight, challenge and immerse players, as well as finding an intimacy in digital worlds that eludes them in their real lives. Their collaborations make them superstars. This is the story of the perfect worlds Sadie and Sam build, the imperfect world they live in, and of everything that comes after success: money, fame, publicity, tragedy. Published by Penguin Books on July 14th The House of Fortune by Jessie Burton The sequel to Jessie Burton’s million-copy bestseller The Miniaturist. In the golden city of Amsterdam, in 1705, Thea Brandt is turning 18, and she is ready to welcome adulthood with open arms. At the city’s theatre, Walter, the love of her life, awaits her, but at home in

the house on the Herengracht, all is not well – her father Otto and Aunt Nella argue endlessly, and the Brandt family are selling their furniture in order to eat. On Thea’s birthday, also the day that her mother Marin died, the secrets from the past begin to overwhelm the present, and so unravels The House of Fortune - a glorious, sweeping story of fate and ambition, secrets and dreams, and one young woman’s determination to rule her own destiny. District Council reminds residents of the dos and don’ts of excess waste The District Council is reminding residents to dispose of their waste properly and what to do with their excess waste.
I
f residents have waste that will not fit into their general waste bin they can book an excess waste collection with the District Council. Any waste left by a general waste bin instead of inside will be counted as side waste, and the District Council’s Waste Team will not collect this. Bins must also have the lid down and able to close in order to be collected as leaving the lid open can lead to litter on the streets. Residents can book a collection for their excess waste on the District Council’s website for £13 per item. Four extra bags of refuse is counted as one item of bulky waste. Bulky waste collections can also include furniture such as mattresses, sofas and tables. Garden waste and electrical waste such as dishwashers will also be collected as part of the service. The District Council encourages the use of the bulky waste collection service as more than one bag of excess waste is counted as fly-tipping. Residents can however leave a reasonable amount of excess cardboard to the side of their recycling bin. If this is required the cardboard must be left flattened or if there are multiple items they should be packed inside each other to reduce the risk of the items migrating into the street. If residents have any large items that they want to pay a third-
party to dispose of they must use legitimate removal services that will remove all waste legally. The District Council strongly advises residents to check that anyone removing their waste has the required licenses. If your waste is not disposed of legitimately, it will be your responsibility and could lead to a fine. You can check the valid waste carrier’s license
easily through the Environment Agency website: https://environment.data.gov.uk /public-register/view/searchwaste-carriers-brokers Residents can also visit a household waste and recycling centre to dispose of excess waste if they do not wish to pay to have their excess waste collected.
Find out more about excess waste collections on the District Council’s website: https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/bulkywaste

One man went to mow The best lawnmowers on the market to help you keep your grass looking great. We all love a beautifully manicured lawn, though who would have suspected there is such choice when it comes to a simple trim? Lawnmower types Rotary A rotary lawnmower has a single high-speed rotating blade that cuts grass with a chopping motion. It is versatile on uneven terrains and can cope with tough grass. Cylinder While a cylinder lawnmower has multiple blades to produce a perfectionist, precise cut, it much prefers flat, show-piece lawns, and will give a superior finish on neat gardens. Battery This battery-driven top-ranker is notable for its safety aspect, namely there is no chord, but performance-wise it’s right up there with corded and fuel versions, where in the past it lacked durability and longevity. Petrol/diesel While there is still a place for the fuel-driven lawnmower, it’s mostly in the sense of tending to large areas of land, typically ride-on vehicles. Robot Robot mowers are certainly satisfying our love of AI and the employment of tech to make life
that bit easier, with no human margin of error. TOP PICKS: Budget Flymo Speedimo Corded Rotary Lawnmower (around £130) With a Flymo you know what you’re going to get. Clunky and noisy, it does however come from a brand that’s renowned for performance, and the chances are your trusty cutting machine will still be going strong a decade from now. Premium Allett Kensington 14B Petrol Cylinder Mower (around £1,500) Built with quality, solidity and purpose in mind, the Allet Kensington won’t win any awards for aesthetics… although once it’s done its work, your lawn might! A petrol, cylinder motor, this flattens as it cuts, and comes with interchangeable cylinders which suit the sort of look or effect you’re aiming at. Petrol Stihl RM 448 Petrol Lawnmower (around £600) Self-propelling and, given it’s petrol-based, longevity guaranteed. You may find you don’t need to fling this machine around your lawn for too long

though – its hardworking, has multiple variable settings, and gets the job done with the minimum of fuss. Best overall Mountfield Princess 38Li Cordless Lawn Mower (around £400) Perfect for small- to mediumsized gardens, the Mountfield is also light and, of course, battery powered. It has six pre-set cutting heights and is renowned for its quiet operation. Robot Husqvarna Automower 405 (around £1,850) An expensive machine, but time is money, and what you invest now, you undoubtedly save in being able to pursue other things in life. The Husqvarna is quiet, efficient and offers a brilliant finish.

Greenfingers…
The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the pests that parade our petunias… and more. We all want our outdoor spaces to be as beautiful and as thriving as possible, yet by employing a host of natural ways to put pests off, we can keep our courtyards canny, and our green spaces chemical-free. The best way to do this is to think about natural barriers. These, if done well, can comfortably eradicate snails and slugs and all those little creatures who slide and slime over our prized plants. Any type of copper can be used to make a wall that electrically shocks their body, deterring them from moving further forward, while wood ashes or crushed eggshells also work to put those meddling molluscs off their lunch. While most people consider sprays and pesticides as the best way to keep unwanted intruders away, there are a range of natural squirts that do the same thing. For instance,
garlic and chilli may be a culinary staple, but they hold a secret power for gardeners looking to dispose of invaders in a natural manner. Combine crushed garlic and chilli (powdered chilli will do if you don’t have fresh) with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a small amount of dishwashing liquid or soap flakes. Leave to soak overnight in a jar, then strain and spray on plants. The spray is very effective towards aphids and caterpillars – but keep away from kids, avoid contact with your skin and eyes, and use within a fortnight! It’s also worth reminding ourselves that not all bugs and beasties are bad news, and done well, you can encourage some into your garden. Plant mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, sunflowers and dandelions will attract ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings, all of which will happily feast on your aphids. Birds and hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, beetles and insects… as do frogs and toads. Finally, try a trap. Earwigs can devastate seedlings, so if they do pose a problem in your garden, try filling a few plastic flowerpots with straw and balancing them upside down on sticks to attract the pests.
The earwigs crawl up the poles and take shelter in the pots at night and you can humanely dispose by emptying them in the morning. Removing pests and critters the natural way takes effort, imagination and no small amount of patience, but opening your garden to nature’s bounty, whilst preserving as much life as possible, is surely the best and most satisfying way to enjoy the fruits of your labour.
