une 2022 is a big month for the UK, since we finally get to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over an extended Bank Holiday weekend. There are plenty of official events planned for our region as well as countless street and garden parties to attend. Did you know that June used to be the fourth month in the year? Before Julius Caesar came to power, the calendar year only had 10 months. In 46 BC he created the Julian calendar by adding two more months to the year, which made June the sixth month. June has some incredibly varied national days and observances, such as World Environment Day on 5th June, Bike Week and Child Safety Week from 6th to 12th June, and of course Father’s Day on 19th June! And if you’re looking for something a bit different, how about Open Farm Sunday on 12th June? This is a wonderful chance to showcase British farming, and if you can’t find a participating farm near you then you can always make a virtual visit! You can find more information at their website farmsunday.org. As always, please do remember to support the local businesses and services advertising in the magazine without who we wouldn’t have a publication. Until next time, enjoy whatever June brings your way.

First Brompton bike dock installed in Newark The first of four Brompton bike docking stations has been installed at Castle Station in Newark, signalling the beginning of an enhanced cycling offer in the town. Once fully operational, the dock will hold 8 Brompton folding bicycles and residents will be able to book out the bikes via the Brompton bike hire app available on the Apple and Google store. Once downloaded, residents need to select their membership and have their ID at the ready. They can reserve a bike a day in advance to travel for 24 hours or keep the bike for up to 30 days. At the end of the rental period, residents can simply drop the bike off at the docks. Bikes are simple to unfold and can be placed easily on

trains and in offices, even under desks. Other cycling hubs are planned for further strategic locations in the town. The bus station will be getting its own cycling station with two more at Northgate train station and Middlebeck being installed in the summer. Some employers are also showing an interest in hosting docking stations. Prices for hire range from a £5 annual fee and £10 daily charge for occasional users and £20 annual fee and £5 daily charge for frequent users. Go to www.bromptonhire.com to find out more.

FILM FAVOURITES RETURN TO STUNNING SETTING For the first time since the pandemic began, local film fans can finally return to the stunning atmosphere of the National Civil War Centre’s Tudor Hall for a specially selected season of movies. The Tudor setting particularly shines when hosting period pieces so the programme is packed with rich historical spectacles like The Last Duel, a recent critics’ favourite starring Jodie Comer, Ben Matt Damon and Adam Driver which follows various conflicting accounts of

the circumstances around the last duel fought in France. Continuing with the medieval

tone is the much-loved A Knight’s Tale featuring the late Heath Ledger as a penniless squire who poses as a knight. Audiences can also enjoy Olivia Colman’s Oscar-winning turn in The Favourite and David Bowie cult classic Labyrinth. The venue has previously hosted a sold-out screening of Sleepy Hollow and this year, as then, all of the films will be introduced by resident film aficionado Adam Nightingale who will unveil fascinating facts about the making of each title.

All tickets are just £5 with screenings beginning at 7pm. For the full programme and to book your tickets, please visit www.nationalcivilwarcentre.com/tudorhallfilmclub. 4

Starting out along the

Robin Hood Way T

he Robin Hood Way wanders across Nottinghamshire from Nottingham Castle to Edwinstowe via many spots associated with the famous outlaw. It is about 106 miles long, split into 18 sections. Newark Ramblers are planning to complete the Way over this year and started with Section 1, Nottingham Castle to Woollaton Park. We left the Robin Hood Statue by the castle and headed down the hill, left at Castle Boulevard and right at Wilford St to the canal towpath on the right just over the bridge. On the way we spotted the famous Trip to Jerusalem pub – too early to stop here, unfortunately. We strolled along the canal bank watching birds and boats until reaching the road bridge over the A52. Here we climbed some steps and negotiated our way to Beeston Rd by walking downhill towards the busy traffic island and luckily finding the footpath that leads under the road and across to Beeston Rd. Walking left along this road took us to Lakeside. We paused by the Pavilion to take in the views and have a coffee then continued along the left-hand side of the lake, exiting on to University Boulevard at the far end. We then went through the University grounds via the West Entrance (Beeston Lane) until a “twitchell” on the left took us Derby Rd. We crossed this busy road and entered the calm of Woollaton Hall through the grey (at the time of writing) door in the wall. Walking straight ahead took us to the lake where we turned right up to the Hall. This was the end of section 1 and we enjoyed some time exploring the gardens of the park. We were amazed at how much green space was connected up on this walk, taking in the canal bank, parks and lakes plus many interesting buildings, although it is essentially through the middle of Nottingham. More on our Robin Hood Way progress in later editions but if you want to follow the routes in more detail there is a book, The Robin Hood Way, available from The Robin Hood Way association www.robinhoodway.com.

The Queen’s Jubilee: Platinum Pomp The work that goes on behind the scenes to mark Jubilee celebrations. Soldiers, horses and musicians It all starts to come to fruition on the Thursday, as Trooping the Colour marks the Queen’s birthday celebrations. Over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will come together in the traditional Parade. This is the first Jubilee celebration in which women will be included in the regiment, so additional preparations have been made to ensure the influx of first-time participants. RAF fly-past The traditional RAF fly-past completes the parade. The routine will have been practised countless times, though contrary to popular belief, this isn’t just a privilege reserved for the Queen. In the lead-up to the event, local communities have been invited to apply for their own fly-pasts. Jubilee beacons A fortnight before the Jubilee, 1,500 Platinum Jubilee beacons will have been distributed across the UK. This lighting of beacons first took place in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and are a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents.

service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Public safety elements come to the fore here, with tens of thousands of well-wishers lining the streets around the Thames as the Queen and family members attend. The Derby A day of leisure follows on the Saturday as the Queen visits The Derby at Epsom Downs. The event itself is over 240 years old and has garnered a different winner every year, and is open only to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies who have qualified for the race in the months preceding it. It remains the race that offers the biggest prize pot in the British racing – over £1.1million. 10,000 charitable tickets In the evening, Elizabeth returns to London for a party at Buckingham Palace. In the months leading up to the event, which features music and drama celebrating some of the most significant cultural

moments from The Queen’s seven-decade, over 10,000 tickets have been made available to charitable organisations. This has been two years in the planning. Street celebrations Finally, on Sunday, June 5th, communities across the UK are invited play out their own Platinum Jubilee street celebrations. Named The Big Lunch and launched in 2009, communities have been planning for months how they wish to mark the special day, with up over 1,500 applications made. 200 silk scarfs At the same time, the Platinum Jubilee Pageant sees artistic performers, dancers, musicians, military personnel, key workers and volunteers tell the story of the Queen’s 70-year reign. It includes a ‘River of Hope’ section comprised of 200 silk flags made by primary and secondary school children.

Jennie Bond A portrait of the Queen, by revered royal correspondent, Jennie Bond. Jennie Bond worked as Royal Correspondent for the BBC throughout the Nineties, covering some of the happiest, most tragic and scandalous moments that have befallen the family in recent times. “At the heart of it, I am fan of royalty and a fan of the family unit,” she says. “The trials that the Royal Family have been through are really no different to our own, and that should reassure them as well as us. They are human beings, and fate doesn’t shine brighter on them, because the everyday gains and losses that are just part of being alive. “Ultimately, it is how you come back from the challenges that really matters – and the Queen has, over the past seven decades, truly shown herself to be the most resilient person possible.” Bond is certainly relieved our Head of State has styled and

positioned herself with such a brand of quiet authority. “You could arguably look at almost everyone around the Queen and pick out faults and failings,” she says. “We’ve seen so many in recent years, to the extent we don’t need to name the culprits or the dealings. “Yet when you shine that light on the Queen it’s really difficult, at any point, to say, ‘you got that wrong’, or ‘this could have been done better’. “I think with Elizabeth we tend to take that for granted – we tend to just accept she is like that without contemplating what sort of royal landscape we would have with someone less capable at the helm.” As far as privacy goes, the

Queen values it, but respects the need to be visible and approachable. “Elizabeth is funny, charismatic, sharp as anything, but I think worn down at times by the sheer weight of what it is she has to do. It’s no easy task for someone in their nineties and no amount of wealth or privilege will compensate for what is an incredible commitment to her people,” says Bond. “I have had the honour of covering a lot of royal moments of great importance… moments in history I suppose – Princess Diana’s death, the Queen Mother’s death, the divorce of Charles and Diana. All those were very important moments I had to report on. But honestly, I think the jubilee celebrations and the pomp and pageantry is the most important. I know it signifies a simple anniversary – just a date in the calendar – but more than that it’s a way of looking back over the continued efforts of someone so brave and inspiring, and is the perfect way to say ‘thank you’ to a very special lady.” christa@uselocally.co.uk | 11

Previous Jubilees For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the planet feels as though it’s in a very uncertain place. Across Brexit, through Covid, and with the rumblings of conflict going on in so many parts of the world, perhaps the pomp and pageantry of celebrations to distract us, if only for a few days, from the ills elsewhere. Leaving to one side the Diamond Jubilee from just a decade ago, we take a look at the three other significant jubilees marking our current Monarch’s reign. Silver Jubilee, 1977 The year 1977 saw the Ford Fiesta go on sale in the UK, and Concorde flights begin between London and New York. The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, courted national headlines, while Amnesty International won the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize.

As a result, the Ruby Jubilee celebrations were perhaps more subdued than some of the others. A gala was held at the Royal Opera House; The Great Event at Earl’s Court brought back notions of Victorian

Fleetwood Mac released Rumours, while a new underground line edged towards completion – the Jubilee Line! Originally termed the Fleet Line, it was supposed to open in 1977, although digging work meant the deadline slipped by two years. Elsewhere, the Jubilee Walkway around significant parts of London and the Jubilee Gardens, which are positioned in front of the London Eye, were significant additions to mark the occasion. Ruby Jubilee, 1992 The Queen’s Ruby Jubilee came in the same year as what she famously termed her ‘annus horribilis’ (a Latin phrase meaning ‘horrible year’). The preceding months had seen three of her children’s marriages fail, while fire swept through Windsor Castle.

Golden Jubilee, 2002 The Hungerford Footbridges, across the Thames between Charing Cross and South Bank, are the main tribute to the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.

opulence, while a jubilee lunch was held at Guildhall. However, in the immediate post-Diana era, and with a backdrop of public outcry over royals spending, and within that, the Queen agreeing to pay income tax, it was considered most appropriate to tone down celebrations. Globally, the year saw Yugoslavia break up, as did Czechoslovakia, while George Bush and Boris Yeltsin proclaimed a formal end to the Cold War; albeit attention was rapidly switching to the escalating Gulf War situation.

12 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

There is also a Diamond Jubilee Window adorning Southwark Cathedral, and of course the huge new leisure development over in Stratford was to be giving jubilee billing in being named the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Globally, US weapons inspectors returned to Iraq and within a year a second catastrophic war was to hit the gulf state. In the UK, the year brought an end to Foot & Mouth, which had ravaged UK farming for the previous 11 months, while England lost 2-1 to Brazil in their World Cup quarter-final.

The Queen in her own words Quiet, impeccably mannered, but always addressing with poise and precision, what Queen Elizabeth II says is always worth hearing. The Queen and Diana The idea that the Queen was in some way unapproving of Diana is one that has permeated the popular press and, it might be said, has left an indelible stain on the reputation of both. Yet many biographers have noted that the relationship between the two was excellent, even after the break-up of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles. “No one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. “She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys.” Serving her country Upon the Queen’s coronation, she declared herself fully at the service of the nation she was serving, as have all Monarchs coming to the throne. While the words are regularly spoken, the intensity with which they were said perhaps should have given

some indication that Elizabeth truly was giving herself over to the nation, a

efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.” fact that has been borne out in the 70 years that have followed. “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.” Struggles Taking strength from all around her, the Queen has never professed to have all the answers. “I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their

Family Bringing the royals back to a status where people can empathise and share in the joys and pain of the family unit, is something Elizabeth has excelled in. “Like all best families, we have our share of eccentricities, of impetuous and wayward youngsters and of family disagreements.” Contrition Finally, the Queen has not only had to reference and apologise for events that occurred long before she was born. “To all those who have suffered as a consequence of our troubled past I extend my sincere thoughts and deep sympathy. With the benefit of historical hindsight we can all see things which we would wish had been done differently or not at all.”

Tiny Wonders Six subtle lifestyle adjustments that can elevate you to a place where physical fullness feels a step closer. ONE - Embrace fats - So while bacon, sausage and cake remain off the radar, ‘good fats’ such as avocado, olive oil, nuts and fish should be incorporated into meals and snacks as a great method for boosting a base level of fuel and energy within the body. TWO - Water carrier - The human body requires around two litres of water each day to function at optimal efficiency. In simple terms, measured and efficient intake of H2O means more energy, better complexion and even weight loss, given that drinking the pure stuff suppresses hunger.

THREE - Movement - Whilst it sounds straightforward, getting up and moving around is something that’s simple, yet we neglect to do it so often. Regular movement means profound and important improvements to overall health. FOUR - Sleep Getting shut-eye is the fullest and most accomplished system for the body’s ability to recharge its batteries. The recommendation is for 7-9 hours of sleep every night, with lack of sleep not only impairing body function and mental alertness, but also raising the chance of obesity.

FIVE - Simple supplements Rather than being a cheat for good health, supplements can provide us with timely and measured boosts for all the vitamins and minerals we may be missing from our regular diets. SIX - Dr Feelgood - As much as the initial focus should be on securing the framework of who we are – our bodies – embarking on projects that provoke mental stimulus and satisfaction are just as important.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at haggling, and discusses whether it’s a dying art into which we need to breathe new life. We have a real aversion to haggling in this country – in fact, I would say we are some of the world’s worst hagglers. We’ve lost the bravado and confidence we once had to cut a deal, yet if you master haggling, and it is an artform, it’s fun and actually adds a layer of enjoyment to the process of buying and selling. Most people encounter haggling when it comes to their utilities and other service providers, and in simple terms, if you don’t haggle when it comes to renewing your broadband or TV package or mobile contract or car insurance or whatever it is, you are simply costing yourself money that could translate to a meal, or a deposit for a car, or a holiday. The first part of haggling where utilities are concerned is to get on price comparison sites in order to get a benchmark of what is available elsewhere, because that’s your target. Usually these best offers will be

in the form of ‘new customer’ initiatives, though as an existing customer who has already paid into the pot, why the hell should you not be qualifying for the same deals. At the end of the day, a lot of haggling comes down to being honest, forceful and confident, but also charming and friendly. Explain your budget, explain the better deal being offered by another provider, or by your own provider to new customers, and make it clear you will leave unless something changes. Of course, many of us know

22 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

those best deals come when, as an existing customer, you get put through to disconnections – it’s the point at which your provider is really just one step away from losing you for good, and it is those customer service agents who have the ability to get you a much better price. Ultimately, it is your negotiation here that will count, but if you don’t get the deal you think you deserve, my advice is to walk away. If you can negotiate a new deal, don’t get caught on a long agreement, and do remember to phone back to renegotiate again when any promotional period ends. Mostly, be charming, friendly and forceful, and enjoy the process of haggling!

HOROSCOPES BY RUSSELL GRANT

ARIES

March 21st - April 20th Obligations are a burden over your head. It's common to put other people's needs as an essential priority, but it's time to get rid of what is creating stress and take care of yourself. If your life has been stressful for several months, take a break, let your hair down and smile again. Friends always ask you for advice on their relationships. It's time to consider your relationships and life.

TAURUS

April 21st - May 21st Scale back social plans. Instead of dining at expensive places, invite friends to your home for a delicious dinner. You can still enjoy yourself without spending a lot of money and as you wait for additional cash to come in, you could begin making plans for a trip with your loved ones. You have the chance to try again at something that you have failed before. What can you do if you don't take another shot? Make this an opportunity to take another go at it and be sure that it was returned to you to help you understand why.

GEMINI

May 22nd - June 21st Accept any opportunity to make money offered to you. Utilise your talents to make a difference in the world, and it could be the beginning of a successful business. The buds will soon appear when you nurture your ideas. The fruits of your efforts will begin to appear very quickly. You're an outstanding professional and those at the top are beginning to notice you. Don't be shocked if you are appointed to some critical department or committee.

CANCER

June 22nd - July 23rd An intimate friendship is likely to grow with people who share your goals. A few financial mismanagements from the past will be resolved on the 18th and you'll be determined to ensure an incident similar to this one can't and won't happen ever again. In addition, an agreement will be reached with your partner or family members to establish an updated and more prudent budget. Repaying debt is essential for long-term financial health and can give you satisfaction.

LEO

24th - August 23rd Cash may appear more accessible at the end of each month than the financial situation you had earlier. There's excitement in the air. This could become too much if you aren't careful and manage just one thing at a time. Be careful not to continue running ahead of your peers since they'll not be able to keep pace with you. Be patient, stay away from unnecessary stress and take advantage of the moments of enjoyment and laughter. These moments can lower stress levels and boost your creative abilities.

VIRGO

August 24th - Sept 23rd Disputes can erupt about joint finances or inheritance. It is a cause for concern that some people are obsessed with material matters and you're inclined to leave an unpleasant situation. If you have a legitimate claim to a certain amount of money, get an expert to advocate on your behalf of you. A legal agreement can alleviate some of the burdens. Don't let your partner make the crucial choices.

LIBRA

September 24th - Oct 23rd Make sure your thoughts and behaviour remain positive, and you'll be able to change your mindset for the better. You think that other people should work harder and make financial contributions to your home. Let your opinion known when the month starts. It's essential to let people know that you're not interested in paying their debts or clearing up their mess. An alternative source of income could be found on the 24th, but it will require you to take on new obligations.

SCORPIO

October 24th - Nov 22nd You and your mate might be going through difficult times, but you'll do your best to be back on an equal footing. A domestic project you initiated a few months ago requires completion. You're now ready to move forward and conclude complex jobs. You're exhausted from keeping track of the pennies. The idea of borrowing money from a friend could strain your relationship.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23rd - Dec 21st Find activities that connect with your inner child in the middle of June. Are you dating? Participating in activities you've never attempted before will expose you to new people. You will have lots of similarities and will have an enjoyable time. If you're looking for work, ideas to earn money or an opportunity to showcase your creativity, be confident, and you'll get it. The key to success lies in your charismatic and warm personality.

CAPRICORN

December 22nd - Jan 20th The environment in your home is one of love and cooperation when you come together to support each other in achieving a mutually beneficial objective. Are you dating? If you're in a relationship that has the potential to blossom, then it'll develop organically and you'll be able to tell from the outset that this is precisely how it should be. It is possible to spend extra cash this month to pay for home repairs.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - Feb 19th Sincerity and honesty will open the way for a more intimate relationship. Are you not married? Don't let your friends force you back into dating before you're at your best. Enjoy your freedom and enjoy yourself. MidJune is the ideal time to deal with financial issues. One method to stop yourself and your partner from spending your money in a way that isn't necessary is to set up a reasonable budget.

PISCES

February 20th - March 20th You're an affectionate and sensitive personality, but someone is profiting from it and it's time to be alert to this. What are they trying to hide? Your boss shouldn't continue to push you to do something without rewarding your efforts. You only have so much patience before you recognise that you must protect your interests. Make yourself heard, stand on your own and be confident in what is really suitable for you. You should take this step if you want to see improvements.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about immersing ourselves in the great outdoors this summer.

trimming. In reality, it doesn’t matter. Of course I want our gardens to be at their most beautiful as regularly as they can, but these spaces are as much about what they give us, as they are what we give them.

Get out! Get out! Get out! Yes, you – I’m telling you to get up, put your shoes on, open the door and immerse yourself in what a wonderful country and wonderful landscape this is. Even after my 70-plus years here, I am proud and passionate and loyal to the UK, and I could never live anywhere else; and while those emotions hold firm all year round, in my mind there is never a better time to soak up the majesty of nature than now, with the sun out, the days growing longer, and nature unequivocally at her most resplendent. When I suggest getting outdoors in this way – and I suggest it a lot! – on some occasions I get the answer back that the person isn’t into nature, or doesn’t know where to start when it comes to pruning or

So while our own lawns and beds and trellises are often a priority, in these early days of summer I would encourage you to take the opportunity to sample those of others… in the wild, at a country house, even at a neighbour’s. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so get out there, get imitating, and get inspired. And by the way, take your kids… every time. Get them off their consoles, prise them away from social media – it’s really good for them to see this whole other side of things. It’s funny, the three big things government are always ranting on about are law and order, health, and education. That’s fair enough. And yet, time outdoors, time gardening, gives us all of them. If you’re letting off steam, you’re less likely to use your anger in a place where it wouldn’t be suitable. If you’re out there, you’re learning about how things grow, so that’s

the education element. And the health part is obvious - fresh air, exercise, open spaces gardens, parks, woodland, moorland. I know it sounds terribly tribe, but I do think if some of these world leaders just went out and pottered about in their garden for an hour every Saturday letting off steam, the world just might be a better place! So, please… get out!
