elcome to the May edition of UseLocally magazine and as we write the UK is ramping up for the Queen’s official Platinum Jubilee celebrations. There have already been plenty of plaudits for Her Majesty’s stunning achievements, so we won’t try to compete. Suffice to say that we take our hats (or crown) off to an amazing lady who has shown such stamina and determination to keep true to her promise “… that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.” We only hope that we can still be as healthy and active in our later years! Also, this month we look forward to the weather improving and finally being able to spend more time outdoors with our families. May is Local and Community History Month, which is designed to increase awareness of local history. Since our local communities are so important to us as a business, we need no further prompting to get out and about and explore the history of our area. You can find more information at history.org.uk. Although we only have the one Bank Holiday this month (the late May Bank Holiday having been rescheduled for early June to celebrate the Jubilee) there are still plenty of other outdoor events happening in our region so whatever May has in store for you, we hope you get to relax and enjoy some quality time with friends and family.

Lincoln Mystery Plays on Tour Tickets are now on sale for a dramatic retelling of the Lincoln Mystery Plays within five sensational settings this summer. The plays which have medieval origins, have a striking resonance with contemporary circumstances today as they explore, truth lies and power. Presented by a community of local actors under professional direction, the historical performances will bring Bible stories to life with a balance of playful humour and poignant sincerity at locations across Lincolnshire from 26th July to 6th August. Performances are scheduled at Lincoln Cathedral before heading out on tour to churches in Horncastle, Sleaford, Louth and Gainsborough. The Lincoln shows will be presented open air in the shadow of the Cathedral.

Director Tom Straszewski has brought fresh interpretation to the historic Lincoln plays. Whilst remaining true to their Medieval origins, they tell the story of the world from its creation through to Doomsday with a cast of vibrant characters, including gossips, nosey midwives, soldiers, angels and even God. Actors take on a multitude of characters, backed up by folk music, puppetry and dance, to bring the powerful narrative to life.

Tickets, priced at £12 and £15, are available at www.lincolnmysteries.co.uk

On 6th February 2022, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years since her accession to the throne. This astonishing achievement makes her the longest reigning living monarch anywhere in the world. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the title was previously held by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand until his death in 2016. His rule of 70 years 126 days was the second longest reign of a sovereign state in history. The longest-reigning monarch ever was King Louis XIV, who presided over France for 72 years 110 days (14 May 1643- 1 September 1715).

‘Lukasz Pajor/Shutterstock.com’

There is a year-long schedule of events to mark the occasion, and we’re all being encouraged to play our part even in a small way. For example there’s The Queen’s Green Canopy project where communities are being helped to “plant a tree for the Jubilee” (www. queensgreencanopy.org). Plus we can buy souvenirs through the official Royal Collection shop (www.royalcollectionshop.co.uk).

But all eyes will be on the first weekend of June when the Platinum Jubilee celebrations begin in earnest, with the main events set to take place between Thursday 2nd and Sunday 5th June. We have an additional one-off bank holiday in England on 3rd June with the Spring Bank Holiday (which usually falls in late May) having been moved to 2nd June, creating a four-day weekend. Here’s the order of events for the Platinum Jubilee weekend: Thursday 2nd June - Trooping the Colour from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade, ending with an RAF fly-past, watched by the Queen from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Members of the public can apply for tickets via the website qbp.army.mod.uk/ queensbirthdayparade/. Thursday will also see 1,500 beacons being lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, plus (for the first time) in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth countries.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: In Celebration Of A Remarkable Lady Saturday 4th June – Platinum Party at the Palace, a special live concert from Buckingham Palace that will bring together some of the world’s biggest entertainment stars. Members of the public will be invited to apply for tickets, for more information go to www.royal.uk/platinumjubilee-central-weekend.

Sunday 5th June - The Big Jubilee Lunch where local communities are encouraged to come together, celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little bit better. Meanwhile in London the Platinum Jubilee Pageant will involve performers, dancers, musicians, military personnel, key workers and volunteers. Part of this event includes the River of Hope, which will comprise of two hundred silk flags which will process down The Mall, appearing like a moving river. Primary and secondary school children are invited to create a picture of their hopes and aspirations for the planet over the next 70 years. You can register your school’s interest to take part via riverofhope.co.uk. If you’re planning your own local celebrations to mark this momentous event, then the Royal Family has created a wealth of free resources to help via www.royal.uk/resourcesplatinum-jubilee.

Friday 3rd June - Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Lies and Fibs The psychology behind the little white lies we tell our children, and why you need to be careful what you say! Ask any parent - keeping your young ones in check is a tough task. And yet, the process is often made considerably easier with clever use of some truthbending. A recent study found that a parent will tell over 3,000 fibs throughout the process of elevating their child into adulthood, either in protecting them from the truth, in not knowing an answer, or just wanting a quiet life! Here are some classic little white lies that every parent will be able to relate to: - “If the wind blows, you’ll stay like that” – an effective way to stop kids pulling silly faces - “If you don’t brush your teeth, they’ll all fall out” – perfect dental hygiene ploy - “Your eyes will go square” – the classic incentive to move away from the telly and tablets - “Eat your greens or you won’t grow up strong” – a

produce-themed exaggeration - “Unless you share, you’ll have no friends” – harsh but (un)fair, and probably untrue - “When the ice cream van plays his tune, it means he’s run out” – mean, just mean! Psychology and imagination Yet the psychology behind telling lies and fibs runs much deeper. Firstly, it’s not a single-direction process, so parents needn’t necessarily feel bad about the little white lies they tell their children. Those same children, from the age of two, will invent everything from imaginary friends to tales of superhero powers as they go

about seeking fun and stimulation in the world, and the consequences of what they do. The lies they tell are very often an expression of an active imagination, and in many ways, we shouldn’t always seek to suppress these. Ages away Finally, psychologists believe that around the age of eight kids stop believing everything they are told… probably because so many of those naysayer naughties never came true in the fi first rst place! They have a stronger awareness of the power of lying and will do it themselves out of selfi selfish sh gain or so as not to land themselves in trouble, whereas previously it was often a route to creativity, or simply they were saying the thing they thought a parent wanted to hear, even if that wasn’t the truth.

Boost your memory Four exercises that will boosst memory and protect wellbeing. Your brain may not in fact be a muscle, but it does work in much the same way as those in your body – the harder you work it, the stronger it gets and the better it performs. Here are four exercises that yo ou can carry out over a four-w week period – try them m and see if you start noticin ng the results. Exercise 1: Sleep treat Just as you’re ready to go to sleep, think over what you did that day from the time you got up until you got into bed. Follow your entire day step-by-step, visualising each and every step. Don’t worry if in the beginning you can’t remember much detail – you’ll probably move rapidly from task to task or think of the day in larger, broader sections. It’s important to really try to slow down and remember as much as you can, and with time and practice, you will soon start to notice significant improvement in your recall of events and details.

Exercise 2: Map attack On a piece of paper draw a small square for where you live, and begin to add in roadss around you. Gradually buiild a map of your square mile e until you reach the edge of the paper. This is a great ex xercise as it promotes an ability to picture an environm ment, factoring in scale an nd perspective, and boostting rapid recall of memories attached to places. Compare sid de-by-side to a real map and see wh hat you included and missed. Exercise 3: Non-dominantt hand Testing the efficiency of tasks with your ‘wrong’ hand is a great way to get brain activity

increasing as it aims to focus harder and find solutions to what are, in fact, regular jobs. Moving your brain out of its comffort zone in this way is a great way to stimulate it, all the while enco ouraging it to reach out further in the pursuit of other tasks, at otherr times. Exercise 4: Socialising Perhaps the most sa atisfying task of them all! Ex xperts say the brain is at its mosst challenged when in a socia al or party situation, partticularly when around strang gers. In simple terms, the more we interrelate with others, the better. How bra ain exercises help you: • They help improve your memory • They aid your ability to visualise things • They help improve your concentration • They boost perceptiveness at every point throughout the day • They improve powers off observation • They reduce stress • They help us live in n the moment • They may well result in you falling asleep fa aster because your mind is exercised

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at taking financial fi nancial responsibility for ourselves in these postpandemic days. What the Coronavirus pandemic has given us, probably more than any point in the past 50 years, is an idea that we can turn to a bank, or the government, or a charity, for help and support. And I won’t deny that, in some examples, these entities have stood up and there has been a feeling of support and community. Yet I think we all realise that can only go so far. We have now emerged out of the darkness of the pandemic, and slowly but shortly the directive is that we have to fend for ourselves again. I don’t doubt some support remains, but I wouldn’t expect it to last forever.

I think we are all living slightly differently now, and certainly in wake of food shortages during the first lockdown, I have seen much greater understanding and willingness of people to feed their families more responsibly. The average food waste bill in the UK still stands at around £750 per year, and that’s horrendous. Remember the difference between Use By and Best Before, and it will save

you hundreds each year. If you have any packaging that has a date on it, if it’s after that date, lots of people just sling the food. Well, let’s remember – Use By is a health notice to you. If something is beyond its Use By date, you need to chuck it in the bin. Best Before is the manufacturer’s guide to optimum quality. All it means is that the item will be in its best possible condition before this date. The day after a Best Before, it’s still perfectly legitimate to eat. With some canned goods, it’s still perfectly okay to eat them three or four years after the Best Before date. So, use your nose to smell it, use your eyes to look at it, use your senses to decide whether it’s right for you. Just by diminishing that, and by having a decent shopping list and proper menu planning, you will cut down waste. That’s not just good for your pocket, but also good for the environment.

It's not a good idea to spend time with friends when a romantic relationship has just begun.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - Feb 19th There's a temptation to immerse your mind in fun activities, however, despite the relaxed mood your eyes are at the future. Have you visited Balderton Lake?

We hear so much in the media about stress in our lives and the need to find ways to protect our mental health, especially aft fter t spending the last two years in a pandemic, but could some of the help that we need, already be right here – in Baldert rton? t

I

n an ever-growing sea of concrete, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of every ryday y life, lies the tranquility of Baldert rton t Lake. This was a gravel pit, then used as a rubbish dump (a tip) until eventually, in the 1980’s, it was abandoned and left for nature to heal the scars on the landscape and ultimately to flourish into the ‘gem’ that it is now. Walking around the Baldert rton t Lake at a leisurely pace only takes around 20 minutes, but throughout the year, this walk is never the same. In Autumn, you can marv rvel v at the changing colours of the trees, hear the leaves crunching under foot and feel the power of the wind blowing in your face. In Winter, wrap up warmly and enjoy a brisk walk through the echoey landscape – the skeletal trees hanging with icicles and the Jack

Frost decorated spider’s webs, glistening in the light. Every rywhere y around, frost is lying and the mirrored surf rface f of the lake, only broken occasionally, by the movement of the water birds. In Spring, stop to admire the delicate petals and the scent of the Spring flowers, as they emerge from their Winter’s sleep. Stand still and listen to the calls of the many diff fferent f birds, which have made the lake environment their home and watch the magical court rtship t dances of the Great Crested Grebes and the Mute Swans as they prepare to nest. Finally, Summer arrives and with it the feel of the sun’s warmth as you stroll along the lakeside path. Look at all the vibrant colours of the lake’s landscape and listen as the young water birds fill the air with their calls. If you are lucky and tread quietly, you may catch

a fleeting glimpse of the elusive kingfisher, as it flies swiftly over the rippling water. Baldert rton t Lake is a place to relax and to just enjoy all that nature has provided for us. This is a place where families can have fun together, to explore and to educate. Baldert rton t Lake is a beautiful area and is accessible to every ryone y – all ages, on your own or in family groups, there is something here for you and hopefully being in this wonderf rful, f unspoilt environment, in the peace and quiet, our mental health will be support rted. t All that the flora and fauna around Baldert rton t Lake ask of us, is to allow them to live their lives undisturbed, both on land and in the water and they in turn will give us an abundance of pleasure and help us to rest our busy minds - and to just be!

Far-flung action This month, a voyage back into the world of fiction, with a selection of books that can whisk us away to far-off places Book Lovers by Emily Henry (May 3rd) Book Lovers comes from the pen of New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry, and follows the tale of Nora Stephens, who has a life ensconced in books. She has read them all, but the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients and beloved little sister Libby. That’s why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away. With visions of a small-town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story, she encounters not picnics in meadows, but Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.

A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting by Sophie Irwin (May 12th) A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting is a smart tome from Sophie Irwin – a debut novel from the London-based author that combines intelligence with craft. In the plot, lead character Kitty Talbot needs a fortune. Or rather, she needs a husband who has a fortune. This is 1818 after all, and only men have the privilege of seeking their own riches. With only 12 weeks until the bailiffs call, launching herself into London society is the only avenue open to her, and Kitty must use every ounce of cunning and ingenuity she possesses to climb the ranks. Can she secure a fortune and save her sisters from poverty? There is not a day to lose and no one – not even a lord – will stand in her way...

not just the imagination of the book-reading public, but screenplay writers as well, and is already being adapted into a movie.

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi (June 2nd) Akwaeke Emezi’s You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty is a deeply heartfelt romance novel about a woman named Feyi who eases back into the dating scene after an accident killed the love of her life five years prior. The book has courted

“After spending most of my teenage years buried in romance novels, I always wanted to write one myself,” Emezi told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty is a love letter to the brave choices we make in the name of love, the costs we pay for it, and the glory of the reward at the end.”

Top Tips To keep the pastry light and crisp, wrap the beef and mushrooms in a layer of Parma ham to shield the pastry from moisture and prevent it from becoming soggy.

Ingredients (serves 4) • 400g flat cap mushrooms, roughly chopped

Carving at the table can bring everyone together, and it’s hard to go wrong with tender beef, juicy mushrooms and mustard.

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • olive oil, for cooking • 750g piece of prime beef fillet • 1-2tbsp English mustard • 6-8 slices of Parma ham

Gordon Ramsay’s Beef Wellington Introduction

This beef wellington looks impressive, but it’s actually a lot easier to do than it might appear. Using a mix of simple ingredients, like puff pastry and prime beef fillet, this wellington can be used to replace the traditional main in a Sunday roast, or for any special occasion. Served alongside sautéed potatoes and wilted baby gem lettuce – with classic mustard vinaigrette making a great dressing – this is a hearty, rustic dish that the whole family can tuck into.

Method

to cool, then brush all over with the mustard.

2. Heat a frying pan and add a little olive oil. Season the beef and sear in the hot pan for 30 secs only on each side. (You don’t want to cook it at this stage, just colour it). Remove the beef from the pan and leave

3. Lay a sheet of cling film on a work surface and arrange the Parma ham slices on it, in slightly overlapping rows. With a palette knife, spread the mushroom paste over the ham, then place the seared beef fillet in the middle. Keeping a tight hold of the cling film from the edge, neatly roll the Parma ham and mushrooms around the beef to form a tight barrel shape. Twist the ends of the cling film to secure. Chill for 1520 mins to allow the beef to set and keep its shape.

1. Put the mushrooms into a food processor with some seasoning and pulse to a rough paste. Scrape the paste into a pan and cook over a high heat for about 10 mins, tossing frequently, to cook out the moisture from the mushrooms. Spread out on a plate to cool.

• 500g ready-made puff pastry • flour, to dust • 2 egg yolks, beaten 4. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface to a large rectangle, the thickness of a £1 coin. Remove the cling film from the beef, then lay in the centre. Brush the surrounding pastry with egg yolk. Fold the ends over, then wrap the pastry around the beef, cutting off any excess. Turn over so the seam is underneath, and place on a baking sheet. Brush over all the pastry with egg and chill for about 15 mins to let the pastry rest. 5. Heat the oven to 200°C, 400°F, gas mark 6. Lightly score the pastry at 1cm intervals and glaze again with beaten egg yolk. Bake for 20 minutes, then lower the oven setting to 180°C, 350°F, gas mark 4 and cook for another 15 mins. Allow to rest for 10-15 mins before slicing and serving with the side dishes of your choice. The beef should still be pink in the centre when you serve it.

Building a volunteer network to crack down on mindless littering During the last two years we have all changed the way we live our lives as a result of the pandemic and of high-profile news coverage of the Climate Emergency. More people than ever are out walking, visiting parks, and enjoying green spaces but unfortunately noticing litter, spoiling those beautiful areas, as they do so.

W

hile the District Council is doing all it can to ensure that our district is kept beautiful, working tirelessly cleaning up litter and mess and fining those who make it, we can all have a part to play in the fight against the mindless littering of our lovely district. We are all aware of the Climate emergency facing the world at the moment. The District Council is committed to ensuring that Newark is cleaner, safer, and greener and in taking that one step further and building a network of volunteers, to work alongside them, is hoping to deliver their ambitious greening agenda and reduce the litter in our district. In the upcoming month the District Council are launching a MyAccount platform. This platform will allow residents to create an account to access District Council services that are relevant to them. Once set up with an account residents will be able to organise local community litter picking activities. The District Council will then arrange the delivery of litter-pickers, high-vis

vests, litter hoops and bags, as well as agreeing the location for the collection of waste.

which will be available to those volunteering via the MyAccount app.

This will enable the District Council to develop their volunteer network to map and understand what parts of the district are benefiting from community involvement such as this, but crucially it will help them to understand what parts are not so that they can focus on building community activity in those areas.

Earlier this year, the District Council launched its Green Rewards app which rewards you for small changes you make in a bid to becoming greener. This could be walking instead of taking the car or taking part in a litter pick. Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the impact his iconic Ground Force series had on the nation. I get asked a lot about Ground Force, the TV programme I fronted for five years from 1997, and the impact it made on gardening, as a whole. To be honest, I don’t like to talk up my achievements too much, but I will admit this was one of the real successes I will always look back on with fondness. That’s not so much for any personal reasons, and I certainly don’t think my horticultural knowledge was called on in the same way it has been with other gardening shows I’ve done over the years. Instead, the pride I have for Ground Force stems from a place where we managed to start something of an outdoors revolution. Not only were we at the forefront of a new brand of reality TV (thatt wasn’’t a tallentt sh how or a singing contest). It was in people’s homes, in their lives, and focused on

42

the idea that peoplle could come together from all over to make a difference. All the people invo olved in Ground Force came from diifferent backgrounds and offered very different ideas in th he process of transforming a cho osen family’s back garden, but it worked. My role was probab bly one of the easiest – almost just an anchor man pulling the whole thing togeth her, however clumsily! The show’s successs provoked a whole raft of other home reality progrrammes where people’s dreams ca ame true… usually. And I say that on the basis of some of the awkward tra ansformations Changing Rooms embarked on! Yet for the most part, this brand of telly was incredibly successful – think DIY SOS, Property Ladder, Amazing Spaces, Grand Desiigns, Location Location Location and others. At the heart of it iss exploring human natture and d putt ttiing ord tt dinary people in extraordiinary situations, and seeing how the ey react. Everyone who agre ees to take part is looking for some ething, and the lucky ones are the ones who find it and know when th hey have found it. After all, our gardens will never be absolutely perfect places – nature sees to that – but Ground Force certainly got them close to that for a time.

As the TV crews departed, I would always suggest to the homeowners they should just sit in or look out over their garden without feeling conditioned to keep it in a certain way. Life isn’t like that – it evolves, as do our outside spaces, and we should let it. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”… or tidying the gard den!!
