stands are progressing. The hope is that, subject to planning permission, the new IASTI® Newark building will open its doors to students in September 2023. Councillor David Lloyd, Co-Chair of Newark Towns Fund Board and Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “I’m thrilled that this centre is opening right on our doorstep. It offers a tremendous opportunity for our children and young people. While it is incredibly sad that, despite our best efforts, Newark’s Cattle Market is no longer operating, I am delighted that we have found a third party who is keen to re-open a Cattle Market locally.”

Newark’s world-class International Air & Space Training Institute (IASTI®) has welcomed its first students all hoping to become pilots, engineers or ground crew. This brand-new educational facility will be the first of its kind, with military and civil aviation partners, including the Royal Air Force, East Midlands Airport and National Space Centre working collectively to get more people working in the aviation and space industries. Community News Pantoland at the Palace
Christmas pantomime returns the Palace Theatre with this year’s show, Dick Whittington and His Cat, running from Tuesday 7 December through to New Year’s Eve. Katherine Glover, who stars as Dick Whittington, said: “It’s so exciting to be back in a theatre; especially one as beautiful as the Palace. The show is going to be filled with music, dancing, lots of laughs and feel-good fun. My cat and I can’t wait to see everyone there!” This year’s show promises a sparkling return to Pantoland, bringing back all your favourite panto pastimes from ‘it’s behind you’ to ‘oh no you
didn’t’, side-splitting slapstick, sensational songs and, as ever, a much-needed heart-warming happy ever after. Carys Coulton-Jones, manager of the Palace Theatre, said: “It will be truly magical to see our theatre packed with happy smiling faces, enjoying the biggest family event of the year once again. We’ve put in place some extra safety precautions and introduced a new Book With Confidence Guarantee so that if any members of your party are unable to attend due to COVID, their tickets can easily be refunded.”

District home to best parks Four parks across the district are celebrating as they have been recognised with the prestigious Green Flag Award. All managed by Newark and District Council, the successful green spaces are Newark Castle Grounds, Sconce and Devon Park, the combined sites of Sherwood Heath, Cockglode and Rotary Woods, and Vicar Water Country Park. Newark Castle and Gardens has also achieved the much-coveted Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management of its historic features. After 18 months that have seen our parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place 6
to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely, the news that these local landmarks have achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make these green spaces a great environment for everyone to enjoy. From our own park rangers, grounds maintenance staff, asset management team and site managers to the incredible groups of Friends and volunteers whose passion for the parks is palpable, each is vital in preserving the quality of our award-winning spaces.” Do you have some community news to share? Show your love by buying a Hospice Heart
Beaumond House Hospice Care, with the support of Motorfinity, is delighted to launch the next phase of its Keep our hospice in your Heart campaign. Following the success of the appeal launched in April where individuals could buy a heart in memory of a loved one, the hospice is extending the offer to local businesses. 50 blue hearts, made by local crafts people using different materials, depending on their expertise, will be available for local businesses to buy. Catheryn Lowe, head of fundraising and marketing said; “We know how important Beaumond House is to many local companies, so we are extending our Keep our Hospice in your Heart campaign to businesses. By buying and displaying one of our unique hearts you will demonstrate to your colleagues and customers, how much Beaumond House means to you. The hearts connect you directly to the love and support which Beaumond House gives to the community day and night.” Companies can buy a heart from £250 which will pay for a day therapy patient to come to the hospice once a week for three weeks; £500 pays for two days care for a patient in Beaumond House; £1,000 is enough for a patient to remain in their home helped by Hospice at Home. Dean Skiba, chief operating officer at Motorfinity said;” It goes without saying that we are extremely proud of our ongoing partnership with Beaumond House Hospice Care, a hugely loved and respected local charity in our area, and we are so grateful for the hard work they do within our community. So many of us have been touched by loss and bereavement and, by joining in with the Heart 8

Campaign, not only can we remember all our loved ones in our local community but also help the hospice recover from the detrimental impact of Covid 19 in every way possible. As a company, Motorfinity has, and always will, hold charity right at the heart of our business. It is what we do: We always try our utmost to support both national and local charities. Dean continues; “After what has been an extremely difficult 18 months for Beaumond House Hospice Care, when events have been cancelled and their shops have been closed for significant periods of time, we are campaigning to raise muchneeded funds for them. They are at the heart of our local community and are reaching out for help in funding the crucial
services they provide. I am asking all companies to find that little pot of heart-felt gold and dig deep to support our amazing hospice at the very heart of our local community.” Catheryn added; “We are incredibly grateful to Motorfinity for their support of this campaign, it will make a huge difference to us at Beaumond House.” All businesses who buy a heart will also be invited to a thank you event at a local venue in the New Year. The hearts will be 20cm in height and a similar size in width, something that can be easily put on your reception to show your love for Beaumond House and support for the campaign. Please show your love …. Have a Heart.
To purchase a heart or find out more please email fundraising@beaumondhouse.co.uk or call 01636 610556 and ask to speak to the fundraising team.

Use Locally Meets…
Jon Whiles Newark Paint & Hardware
Where did you grow up? I have lived in Newark my entire life. What was your favourite lesson at school? Woodwork was my favourite lesson at school, getting to design and make various items. What was your first job? A draughtsman at a local company. How did Newark Paint & Hardware come about? There was an opportunity within my career to open my own shop doing what I enjoy and providing a service to local people and supporting independent tradesmen. How much has your business changed since you first started it? The business has grown over the last 9 years with moving to a bigger more central location in the town centre where we have been able to expand our product lines and ccreate a shop that you can find everything under one roof. The continued support of u 10 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts
our regular customers has allowed us to welcome new customers who are able to find exactly what they need. What is the best piece of business advice you have ever received? Work hard and you can achieve. If you ever eat out locally where is your favourite place to go? I am partial to a good curry and within Newark we have a wealth of good restaurants and takeaways. Describe your perfect weekend. An ideal weekend for me is watching the football and having a good Sunday roast and spending time with family. Do you do all your own handyman jobs at home? I do the basic DIY jobs around the house but if a job requires the right tradesman then I don’t hesitate in calling in the local qualified labour force. What future plans do you have for Newark Paint & Hardware? We hope to reach out and welcome new customers and hope to expand our product lines and continue to provide a good independent service to the community.

PROSTATE CANCER FACTS & ADVICE FOR MEN OVER 40
Prostate Cancer did not stop affecting men because of Covid-19. In fact a recent survey showed that urgent referrals by GPs in England dropped by over 52,000 since March 2020. As a result over 8,600 fewer men in England started treatment for Prostate Cancer (PCa) in 2020.
I
n 2018 a total of 49,029 men in England were diagnosed with PCa. This is more than ladies diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2017 12,301 men died of the disease which is approximately one every 45 minutes. An early diagnosis of PCa makes an enormous difference. When the cancer is still in the early stages and hasn’t grown outside the Prostate, treatments like radiotherapy and surgery are very effective. One in 8 men will get PCa in their lifetime and for Black men it is 1 in 4. It occurs mostly in men over the age of 40.
men will have PCa without realising it as they do not have any symptoms. This usually is to do with frequency or difficulty in passing urine. If men do have this symptom it may only be due to an enlarged Prostate or that it’s infected. Further tests will be required to determine if it is PCa. It is vital to detect PCa at an early stage. There are continual advances in medical science. However, the only readily available detection method currently available is the PSA blood test, which is simple and relatively inexpensive. Many
So, if you are male and over 40 years old, or have a husband, partner or relative eligible please consider having a PSA test. It could save your or their life. Don’t be one more person adding to the 8.600 men fewer men who started treatment for PCa.

Horoscopes by Russell Grant
ARIES
March 21st - April 20th November has an intense beginning for you. It's possible you'll get an unexpected bill on the 4th, when the New Moon disrupts your cash flow. If you're looking for work, seek opportunities that pay on a commission basis. You'll easily outperform the competition. Close relationships can be a source of irritation in the middle weeks of November.
TAURUS
April 21st - May 21st The New Moon on the 4th pressures you to make a commitment or walk away from a union. An intense desire for freedom may prompt you to go solo. Don't overestimate your importance at work towards the middle of the month. On the 19th, a Lunar Eclipse will tempt you to change your image. This could do more harm than good.
GEMINI
May 22nd - June 21st On the 4th, the New Moon warns against accepting a job that seems too good to be true. It's better to hold out for a position at an established company with a good reputation. A Lunar Eclipse on the 19th brings the end to a secretive situation that has been making you miserable. Turning your back on this part of your life will be a relief.
CANCER
June 22nd - July 23rd The opening days of the month can emphasise the need for fun, romance and adventure. The New Moon on the 4th could make you irritated. Until you change your priorities, you'll remain anxious and stressed. On the 19th, the Lunar Eclipse will prompt you to leave an organisation or friendship that no longer reflects your values.
LEO
24th - August 23rd Family matters will inspire a big change on or around the 4th, due to a conflicted New Moon. Alter your approach to work so that you can spend more quality time with your nearest and dearest. The middle of the month finds you facing off with your best friend or romantic partner. Be honest when they ask for more than you can deliver.
VIRGO
August 24th - Sept 23rd Traffic tie-ups and electronic breakdowns could wreak havoc in your life on the 4th, due to a tense New Moon. On the 19th, the Lunar Eclipse could mark a shocking end to a legal matter.
LIBRA
September 24th - Oct 23rd Salary negotiations could be stressful at the start of November. The New Moon on the 4th will make it difficult to get the compensation you deserve. The Lunar Eclipse on the 19th puts strain on an intimate relationship.
SCORPIO
October 24th - Nov 22nd Resist the temptation to undergo a radical makeover at the beginning of November. Although the New Moon on the 4th will make you yearn for a different look, you could be terrifically disappointed with the results. Replace sugar, fat and alcohol with lean protein, fresh produce and whole grains.
CAPRICORN
December 22nd - Jan 20th Working on a group project could be frustrating at the start of the month. The New Moon on the 4th could throw some technical glitches into a teleconference. and awareness from within, recognising the beauty that is within all of us and promoting the opportunity to take time to look after ourselves, rather than just others. “I’m finally at a point in my life where I can see a little more clearly,” Holly says. “Writing is such a personal process and between these pages you will find many little pieces of me. I want to share my truths in the hope that maybe they’ll help you too.” Published by Transworld on October 28th My Life in Dire Straits by John Illsley One of the most iconic and important British pop/rock bands of a generation, Dire Straits cracked America at a time when many consistently struggled to engage with the US audience, in the process building a transatlantic fan following that celebrated beautiful tracks, heartfelt anthems and timeless melodies that stand the test of time some four decades on.

Festive Fun
The six on-trend toys to look out for this Christmas. • Ravensburger Space Puzzle (£39.99) The board game and puzzle revolution is in full flow, with sales at levels last year not seen since the Eighties. Our rediscovered love of these foldout wonders doesn’t mean we aren’t still expecting innovation, and with that in mind this ingenious design poses a doublelayered appeal – first construct the 3D solar system, then take the time to learn about all its mastery and magnificence.
up ice cream!
• Kinetic Sand Scents (£12.99) When kinetic sand came along it moved the notion of these little grains from outside to indoors, all the while providing for kids (and adults alike) a rather satisfying – and generally unexpected – sensory experience by which these grains can slip through your fingers with all the same pleasure as the real stuff, yet zero mess.
There’s nothing wrong with the concept here, nor the brand’s admirable longevity, although while the Joker and Batman are renowned for their trademark gas guzzlers, many may struggle to name Superman’s famous road vehicle!
Now the proposition has been stepped up somewhat with a new scented version, bringing to life creations, and stimulating almost endless offers of serving
• Scalextric Batman editions (£39.99) An electricitydriven staple of so many Christmases, Scalextric have cottoned onto the film franchise game by hooking up two big deals in producing two notable sets: Batman v Superman (available at John Lewis only), and Batman v The Joker.
• GraviTrax PRO Starter Set (£65.00) To prove beyond any real doubt how far some of our toy choices have regressed this year, why not break out the marbles?! The difference here, of course, being that while in the past it was perhaps a quick game of Ker-plunk, now you have full-on ‘build your own’ systems such as GraviTrax completely transforming the landscape. These futuristic columns, corridors and cages provide a

myriad of pathways into which you can take your marble on its very own festive rollercoaster of fun! • Kaloo, My First Doll (£19.99) The prospect of a doll for Christmas will always have the potential to divide parents. From pretty and cute in one camp, to scary and sinister in the other, the reality is our little ones love to have a buddy to carry around, and the new range of Kaloo dolls are certainly expected to be one of the big Christmas list dwellers this year. • UNO 50th Anniversary Edition (£19.95) Unlikely to sell out, UNO has nonetheless emerged as one of the best festive family games. Simple to play, sociable, quick, great fun for kids and adults alike, and with more twists and turns than an afternoon in the maze at Hampton Court, UNO may just be the secret antidote to periods of turkey-induced festive malaise!

Food Review by Leisa Pickles HHHHH
Greek Night at the Corner House Café F
Located within Hardy s, Farndon
or this month’s food review, my husband and I headed to Greece without leaving Nottinghamshire! Yes, our Grecian culinary experience was brought to us courtesy of a Greek Night at The Corner House Café located within Hardy’s Farndon. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a Greek inspired cocktail of Ouzo, Cloudy Lemonade and fresh mint and shown to our table with Live Greek music playing in the background. The menu was 5 courses, all of which were traditional Greek favourites with a choice of meat and vegetarian available. To further enhance the Greek experience, the wine and beer was also typically Greek and had been selected especially for the evening by Newark based independent Wine Merchant, Ann et Vin. The 5 courses started with a selection of dips, bread and olives, all of which were delicious. Then came the giant butter beans in tomato sauce with extra bread for dipping. Next came chicken souvlaki followed by the main course of classic Beef Stifado
with Greek style roast potatoes and green beans. The beef was deliciously tender and the dish itself was so well seasoned and well presented. The meal was brought to a close with a selection of Greek desserts served with ice cream. The team at Hardy’s Farndon are experimenting with a number of different formats to appeal to both existing and new customers
and also demonstrate the quality of the food they are able to prepare fresh on site. This was my first experience of eating in at the Corner House Restaurant but now I have, I will definitely be back and may even pick up a few items from the Farm Shop on the way through. The Corner House Café is open 7 days a week serving a range of food to eat in and takeaway. They are dog friendly, have plenty of outside seating and cater for all dietary requirements.

Top Tip Do not overknead, or the gluten strands will get overworked and tear, leaving you with a chunky dough that doesn’t have the strength to hold a good rise of the dough.
Ingredients
Tear ‘n’ Share Sweet Bread Introduction
Although not a traditional festive-themed bake, sweetbreads do tend to come into the ascendancy during the winter months, and this tear ‘n’ share loaf will not only offer a soft, lightly sweetened and buttery bread treat – delicious as toast or as a bigger accompaniment to an evening meal – it’s also sociable and fun. Top it with some butter, jam or even icing, and serve.
Method 1. Check yeast by dissolving 2tsp of active dried yeast with 1/2 cup milk and 1tsp of sugar from the overall amount and leave in a warm location until frothy, about 10-15mins. If the mixture does not froth up and rise, discard and start again. 2. Into a bowl sift three cups of flour, then add 1/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup warm milk, 4 egg yolks, 2tbsp sour cream, 1tbsp vanilla extract and the risen yeast mixture. Mix with a paddle attachment on low speed, then switch to a kneading hook and knead on low speed for about 20mins so the dough is elastic. 3. Add 3oz of butter and 1/4 tsp of the salt and knead it into the
(serves four) 1 cup warm milk 2 tsp active dried yeast 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup granulated sugar 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp sour cream 1 tbsp vanilla extract 3 oz unsalted butter, softened, room temperature 1/4 tsp kosher salt Egg wash (whisk together) 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp water 3 to 4 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)
bread until no streaks of butter are seen, (5-7mins). 4. For first proofing, oil the sides of the bowl and the dough, cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and leave in a warm place to proof until doubled in size, about 90mins. Preheat the oven at 100°C for 2-3mins, then turn it off and place the bowl into the oven. To shape, divide the dough into three pieces, rolling each into a tight ball, then into a 20-inch log. Pinch the ends of the three logs together at one end, then braid them, tucking the ends underneath itself. 5. For second proofing, transfer to a 12x18” baking sheet, cover with a clean tea towel and transfer to a warm place once

again until the braid doubles in size. Repeat the trick with preheating the oven slightly, if needs be. Once doubled in size remove from the oven and preheat it to 180°C with the baking rack in the middle. Brush the braid with the egg wash and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds (optional). 6. Now bake for about 3035mins or until the top is golden or temperature inside registers 90°C. Then remove, allow to cool, cut and enjoy.

Greenfingers…
The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, as the nights draw in, Alan Titchmarsh explains how our gardens can still be a place of light, stimulation and decoration, and why now is the time to plan for brighter months ahead. There is a saying: ‘gardeners learn to grow the things that want to grow’. In fact, the truth is everything wants to grow, it’s just up to us not to get in the way of that! A big part of growing is preparation, and the best time to start planning for next year is right now; so really have a good look around your garden, do some research, and revel in the excitement of what it will look like in six months’ time. The first things to consider are sunshine and shade; find out your plot’s capabilities and d then you’’ll know how you can grow all kind of things, be they in the soil, or in tubs, pots and troughs.
Consider size as well – do you have a ranging ou utdoor space or are you more limited? In reality, it doesn’t matter – just because a space is small it doesn’t mean it’s hard to find thing gs to grow in it. It’s easy to grow salads in a small space, tomatoes in summer, even dwarf fruit in large pots. No, you won n’t be self-sufficient, bu ut you know that yo ou grew it. So being realisticc about what’s in front of you, and making the best of it, is crucial. The same e goes for when the evenings begin to get darker so much earlier. Plants begin to wither, flowerful gardens sink into greens and browns, and there’s a feeling of packing up for winter, waitin ng for the spring for colours to beg gin to return. I’m always keen to show people this isn’t in fact the case, and there is still so much to take from our gardenss every month and every week of the year. One very obviouss way to extend the days in your garden in autumn/winter iss to add some subtle lighting. I don’t have much lighting in my garden but I try to use what I have to maximum effe ect. There are some up the sides of a path, and others that highlight things - I’ve got a tall hedge with urns in
38 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts
front with a couple of lights in them, and they look wonderful. They go on in the evening for a couple of hours and then switch off at 10. I loved looking at those urns – it’s not over the top but it keeps the garden alive and to be enjoyed at night. Dare I say it, it’s almost romantic, which is very ‘me’ of course!
