Providing financial help to injured local service personnel and their families The Newark Patriotic fund was set up in 2008 to provide financial help to injured local service personnelʼs families.

T

he need for a fund was identified when Corporal Nick Davis Grenadier Guards lost his leg in Afghanistan in 2007. Whilst the Army was looking after him very effectively, there was no, real support system for his family. This made a group of friends gather together in Newark with the specific purpose of raising money to help not so much our heroes, but their families. The seeds for the fund were established and the task of setting it up fell to co-founders Patrick Mercer and Keith Girling, both ex-servicemen. There is now a well established Management Committee and Board of Trustees.

The aim of the fund is to relieve the needs of Veterans and their families in the Newark area, who have been wounded, injured or rendered sick whilst serving the armed forces, in particular through the provision of advice, support and financial assistance. The fund meets its aims by providing support such as advocating for service users when accessing services, assisting with job applications, providing financial management training, CV writing and much more. The NPF also has a drop in centre at Newark Town Bowls Club. The centre is a place for

anyone that is having any problems due to the fact of any sort of crisis that has arisen from duty to the Crown. This isn’t only for veterans but for families as well of serving men and women that are a having a hard time adjusting to their loved ones being away or problems that may have raised due to their duty. Drop in’s are held every Monday at the Newark Bowls Club, The Green, London Road, NG24 1TS (It is behind Iceland down the access drive to the left) Between 10.00 and 12.00, all are welcome and there isn’t any pressure, come and join us for a FREE cuppa and a chat.

If you would like to find out more information about the NPF please visit www.newarkpatrioticfund.co.uk 6

Newark set to welcome its first ever Teenage Market A market specifically for young and ambitious entrepreneurs to experience market trading and showcase their abilities for free is set to be held on Sunday 19 September 2021 at The Wharf car park in Newark between 10am and 4pm.

N

ewark Town Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council have partnered with the nationally renowned Teenage Market Company to bring the market to Newark. The new venture is set to become a regular event in the Newark and Sherwood district, providing an opportunity for young people to have a first free taste of market trading. Young traders will also have the chance to apply for a long term pitch at Newarkʼs regular markets held in the nearby Market Place, one of the largest, oldest and most panoramic in the UK. Ian Harrison, Markets Manager at Newark Town Council, said: This event will not be a one off and will be the launch pad for a long term initiative to maximise the opportunities for young people in Newark and the local area who have a passion to become a successful entrepreneur through market trading at the historic Newark Royal Market, which has successfully served

The new venture is set to become a regular event in the Newark and Sherwood district, providing an opportunity for young people to have a first free taste of market trading.

Councillor Keith Girling, Chair of Newark and Sherwood District Councilʼs Economic Development Committee, said: This is a great initiative that has been successful nationwide and we are pleased to bring it to our district for young people to get the chance to become entrepreneurs. We hope residents come along and support the market and the young traders.

the town for more than 900 years.

On the same opening day, the highly popular Dragon Boat Race on the adjacent river will also be taking place. This event sees teams of up to ten rowers in 30 foot boats racing to support local charities; Beaumond House and the Newark Childrenʼs Bereavement Centre. To add to the atmosphere of both events there will be live music and succulent street food.

Further teenage markets will be held in the next six months within the district and market operators from across the North East Midlands will be at the event to see if an ongoing network of teenage markets across the region can be arranged.

Use Locally Meets…

James Ellwood Balderton Tile Centre

Tell us how Balderton Tile Centre first started My Grandad. As far as I am aware he started it out the back of his van in the early 90s. From memory he had a bright red van. Shortly after he bought the shop on Brisbane Court. Do bear in mind this is a 5 year old’s take on events! What is it like running a business with your mother, and who is the bossiest? Mum has always been good at keeping personal and professional separate, so at work she’s not really “mum”. We work well together. Mum is bossiest, 100%! What do you like to do in your free time? All things football – playing it, watching it, talking about it at the pub. Spending time with my family and generally keeping busy. What’s the best piece of business advice you have ever received? Always judge yourself by your standards not by anyone else’s and give every person

10

the level of respect they deserve, whether that be the utmost respect or none at all. What is the most unique job you have ever been asked to do? Swimming pools are pretty cool, I’ve done 4 in 20 years and actually enjoy them. Name your favourite local eateries to have breakfast, lunch and dinner My local is The Plough at Coddington – brilliant for food and drink. The chef is amazing! We love taking the kids to Beanblock; they have everything a family could need. It’s great to enjoy a hot coffee while the kids are entertained. What future plans do you have for Balderton Tile Centre? To keep the business going down the same path, to keep employing local people, to keep a high quality of work. Not necessarily growing the business but to make it more efficient.

Left is Sam our newest apprentice who is showing great promise and right is Owen who is James’s Cousin, he has just finished his apprenticeship and is doing very well.

ROADSHOW CO

Friday 17th September 2021 - 11am to 3pm Best Western Deincourt Hotel, London Rd, Newark NG24 1TF

Krugerrand

Breitling

Amber Urgently required!

THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in Newark and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash. Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.

So on Friday 6th September, you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Please see listed a few of the items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! LADIES – LOOK IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOXES. If you have any old broken rings, chains, earrings, old gold wrist watches or items with stones missing, then bring down the box and let us surprise you. Amber and Jade, costume jewellery – high prices paid. WE MAKE HOUSE CALLS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO VISIT. For further information or an appointment please contact us on: 07930 157 944 any time.We specialise in watches and listed below are just a few of the make we require – BROKEN OR WORKING – ANY CONDITION Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Patek, Philippe, Vachron PLUS MANY OTHER MAKES

Have you watched the BBC programmes Flog It or The Antiques Roadshow?

Our format is exactly the same, but we offer the chance to sell without the uncertainty and commission of the Auction House and if you are unsuccessful at auction there may still be charges to pay. East Midlands Antiques realise that there are some very unusual items that require the exposure of a major auction house and we would be pleased to advise in such cases. However many items do not warrant this and East Midlands Antiques will offer accordingly. Come and try the friendly and discreet service we have provided for many other people like yourselves over the years. Aged for Fitness The best workouts for every age. Generally speaking, the older we get, the less we feel like the lean, mean, dynamic machines we once were. In reality though, staying fit as we get older is as achievable and realistic as it ever was, and the secret to reaching and preserving good health simply comes through careful exercise selection. Here’s our guide to appropriate exercise types for your age – see if you can get inspired. Twenties You have time and energy, so this is when you want to get out there, explore different sports, try a variety of workouts and figure out what you really love. This decade is a time of freedom, with fewer people than ever in the 20-30 age group weighed down by childcare. Think team games, rock climbing, surfing, plus anything that is challenging and also offers a social aspect. In career and relationships, your twenties are regarded

14

as the decade of discovery, and that goes for fitness and health too. Thirties The body’s metabolism begins to slow down in your thirties, so start including interval training into your workouts to burn fat effectively. You also begin to lose muscle mass – around a third of a pound per year – so lifting heavy weights once a week is a good way to build back what you’ve lost. Also consider yoga and meditation for relaxion, as this decade is thought to be one of life’s most stressful with job and family pressures beginning to build. Forties Your forties represent a vital time for exercise, and they’ll really determine how your body ages over the second half of your life. Cardio is vital to keep fat from settling on your abdomen (a leading cause of heart of disease), and weightbearing activities like hiking and jogging are particularly good for building bone density. Strength training is also a worthy investment for later on.

Fifties They say life begins at 50, so make the most of your free time by taking up a hobby that inspires and challenges you, like tennis, dancing or hiking. In this decade it’s also vital to maintain suppleness and flexibility, so consider attending a Pilates or yoga class to refine joint movement and build muscle memory. Sixties and beyond You may not think you need to focus too much on strength training in your sixties, but the opposite is true. Studies have shown that physical activity can prevent a decline in the brain’s white matter, warding off strokes, as well as conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Along with lifting moderate weights once a week, try to do 30 minutes of gentle aerobic activities like walking or gardening. Your body and brain will thank you.

Authors for Autumn

Lose yourself this summer within the pages of these thrilling fictional offerings. Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian Thriller lovers will enjoy getting stuck into Vera Kurian’s fresh take on the psychopath trope whose main protagonist is Chloe, a ‘First-year student, ordinary, legging-wearing, girl next door...and highly intelligent diagnosed psychopath.’ Never Saw Me Coming is a sharp, electrifying and hugely entertaining thriller with an antiheroine who will work her manipulative magic on you. Published by Harvill Secker on September 9 Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty Fans of the Australian author will revel in the twisty, thrilling joys in this highly anticipated release, which doesn’t disappoint. Joy Delaney and husband Stan have done well. Four wonderful

grown-up children; a family business to envy; the golden years of retirement ahead of them. So when Joy Delaney vanishes – no note, no calls, her bike missing – it’s natural that tongues will wag… but for the Delaney children there is a much more terrifying question: did they ever know their parents at all? Published by Michael Joseph on September 14 The Magician by Colm Tóibín From one of our greatest living writers comes a sweeping novel of unrequited love, exile, war and family. The Magician tells the story of Thomas Mann, whose life was filled with great acclaim and contradiction. Found on the wrong side of history in the First World War, he would have six children and keep his homosexuality hidden; a man forever connected to his family and yet bore witness to the ravages of suicide, eventually winning the Nobel Prize. Through one life, Colm Tóibín tells the breath-taking story of the twentieth century. Published by Viking on September 23 The Hill We Climb and Other Poems by Amanda Gorman Anyone who watched the inauguration of the 46th

20

President of The United States, Joe Biden, will remember the stirring and highly emotive reading by Amanda Gorman of her poem The Hill We Climb. Now presenting her debut collection of poetry under the same name, Gorman further proves her extraordinary talent and potential as one of literature’s brightest rising stars. Published by Chatto & Windus on September 21 Beautiful Country - A Memoir of An Undocumented Childhood by Qian Julie Wang Qian is just seven when she moves to America, the ‘Beautiful Country’, where she and her parents find that the roads of New York City are not paved with gold, but crushing fear and scarcity. This memoir is an unforgettable account of what it means to live under the perpetual threat of deportation and the small joys and sheer determination that kept her family afloat in a new land. Recipe Tip

Ingredients

Make this dish vegetarian by substituting the lamb for one 400g tin of cooked puy lentils and using vegetable stock instead of beef.

(serves four) 500g lamb mince 2 aubergines (sliced crossways) 4 large white potatoes (peeled and sliced)

Luscious Lamb Moussaka

1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée

Introduction

2 garlic cloves (minced)

Colder evenings call for warming comfort food such as this satisfying moussaka. Serve with a fresh green salad or even just a crusty baguette to mop up the rich sauce.

2 tsp ground oregano

Top Tips • If you are concerned about the aubergine being bitter – the fresher the aubergine the less chance of this there is – simply place your raw slices in a colander with a pinch or two of salt, leave for 10 minutes and then rinse them thoroughly before patting dry with kitchen towel. Oven bake as instructed. • Dish can be made ahead by covering your layered moussaka with cling film and storing it in the fridge. When ready to bake, simply cook for five minutes longer in the oven.

Method

Step One Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lay your potato slices on one baking tray and your aubergine discs on another with a drizzle of olive oil and

34

1 onion (diced)

½ tsp ground cinnamon 150ml beef stock

a pinch of salt. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden.

For the béchamel sauce

Meanwhile, put the lamb, onion, garlic, oregano, and cinnamon in a large frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up the meat. Once browned, add the chopped tomatoes, beef stock and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook over a high heat for 4-5 minutes until the ragù is reduced to a thick and saucy texture.

40g flour

Step two To make the béchamel sauce, melt the butter in a medium saucepan and stir in the flour. Cook for a few seconds, then gradually stir in the milk. Add half the grated cheese and simmer the sauce gently for 4–5 minutes, stirring regularly. Season with salt and pepper.

40g butter 500ml milk 80g grated cheddar or parmesan Pinch of salt and pepper

Step Three Add the potato slices to an oven-proof dish in a single layer. Spoon over a layer of lamb ragú and top this with a layer of aubergine slices. Repeat once more before pouring over the béchamel sauce and topping with the rest of the grated cheese. Bake the moussaka for 35-40 minutes until it is golden and bubbling.

The Kingfisher Lodge at Portland Fishing Lakes, Sibthorpe A 15-minute drive out of Newark on the old A46, through the village of lston is a unique venue called: The Kingfisher Lodge, situated at Portland Fishing Lakes in Sibthorpe.

T

he Kingfisher Lodge is a small event venue come café come bar serving a wide range of food and drink. From full English Breakfasts to light bites such as jacket potatoes and paninis. The menu has something for everyone including vegetation and vegan options, milkshakes, smoothies and luxury dairy ice-cream from Nottinghamshire Producer, Thaymar Ice Cream. We visited on a Thursday night during one of their Around the World events and were able to sample Authentic Brazilian Tapas from Salgados. We decided to mix things up a bit and also had Cheesy Chips off the main menu and a Crunchie Milkshake which

was a meal in itself. The Kingfisher Lodge has plenty of seating both inside and out with great views over the fishing lake.

The Team at the Kingfisher Lodge have lots of events coming up, such as a Race night, Quiz Night, Karaoke, Casino and not forgetting football and sporting events shown on the big screen. The atmosphere here is relaxed and very friendly, it’s a bit like home away from home and there is definitely a holiday vibe. Families and dogs are welcome. The venue can also be booked private events, they even have a Prosecco / Pimm’s boat which is great for weddings and parties. Fake to finesse How to get the artificial grass lawn that suits your needs. ONE - Ditch the lawnmower, buy a broom Your trusty Flymo will be redundant once an artificial grass lawn is fitted, but using a stiff broom to sweep away elements caught in the grass is a good idea. Indeed, some gardeners even use a hoover to clear away light debris. Sprinkling on water is a good method for removing spillages and marks, and will encourage small mossy shoots from within to add to the natural effect. TWO - Get the height right A shorter pile height (around 15mm at the smallest) will give the impression of a tight, well-maintained lawn, though perhaps won’t have the same natural effect as a longer length. A deeper pile (up to 35mm) looks more realistic and adds to a natural, luscious feel. For this, it’s recommended to sprinkle the surface with sand, which helps the strands stay facing upwards. THREE - Decide on density As well as pile height, density counts where artificial grass is concerned. Simply, this is the number of strands sewn into a square inch – the more strands, the more the appearance of quality and comfort underfoot and, typically speaking, the higher the cost! FOUR - Underlay, underrated? Many brands of artificial grass come with a resilient bottom layer which can be laid directly onto concrete, wood, or any other existing surface. However, for extra padding and sponginess,

42

consider adding an external underlay, in much the same way as you would do a carpet for your home. FIVE - Colour care A number of lawns will come with different coloured strands, all adding to the realism of the carpet. Some even have light brown “dead grass” strands for extra visual appeal, ultimately softening the single-tone approach of the lawn. SIX - Size matters While the temptation is to take the maintenance out of your grass areas by completely covering the space in a luscious artificial lawn, in reality this horticultural innovation is intended for smaller spaces. Laying an expansive garden may give a plastic look, while more concentrated areas are tidied by an artificial lawn. SEVEN - Fit for purpose Generally speaking, it’s better to get your artificial lawn fitted by a professional. Managing a huge roll of carpet, including cutting, slicing and joining together, isn’t as easy as it may seem. EIGHT - The clean theme While laying artificial grass certainly creates a more hands-off space, it’s still important to clear up animal mess and other spillages. In addition, ensuring frost and snow are cleared away as soon as possible will help prevent the salt left behind from forming a crusty layer over each blade of grass.
