HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his second season on the Hilltop, all but one player on the 2009-10 roster was brought to USF by Walters and his coaching staff.

San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players who look prepared to follow Walters’ mantra: Play hard. Play smart. Play together.

Coach Walters came to USF from Florida Atlantic University. In his first season at the helm, Walters guided Florida Atlantic to its second consecutive winning season the first time the Owls had done so since posting three straight from 1990-92.

In 2006-07, the Owls won 10 Sun Belt Conference games, the third-most for a first-year Sun Belt member. The team also set a program scoring record, averaging 74.9 points per game.

Prior to Florida Atlantic, Walters’ first collegiate coaching job came at Valparaiso, a two-year stint as an assistant under Homer Drew. The 2003-04 Hornets were 18-13 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Mid-Continent Conference with a record of 11-5.

Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player.

Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game, leading the Jayhawks in scoring during both his junior and senior campaigns. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year.

After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, averaging 4.6 points and 1.7 assists per game.

Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (13), Drew (11), Riley (8), Gunner (6), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

DONS READY FOR 2009-10 OPENER DONS HOST MUSTANGS IN 2009-10 OPENER: San Francisco opens the much-anticipated 200910 regular season when it hosts Cal Poly Friday, November 13 at War Memorial Gym. It marks the first time the Dons have opened the regular season with a home game since the taking on Sonoma State in 2006-07. Last year the Dons opened the season with a 75-70 win at Hawaii in the 2008 Verizon Wireless Tipoff Challenge. USF looks to avenge an ugly 61-40 loss at Cal Poly (12/13/08).

USF IN SEASON OPENERS: Since 1985-86, San Francisco owns a 13-11 record in season openers. The Dons have won two of their last five lid-lifters, including a 75-70 win last season at Hawaii (11/14/08) to kick off the Rex Walters era.

USF dropped its 2007-08 debut to Blake Griffin’s Oklahoma Sooners 71-55 (11/8/07). Before breaking through for a 73-62 victory against TennesseeMartin in the 2003 Guardian’s Classic, USF had dropped four consecutive season debuts. The Dons most lopsided win came in the 1986-87 kickoff - a 64-19 pasting of St. Thomas (Minnesota).

DONS AND MUSTANGS  USF squares of against Cal Poly for the eighth time and owns a 5-2 edge in the all-time series  San Francisco and Cal Poly played the first game in the series in 1960-61, a 60-51 setback at Mott Gym (1/24/61).  USF’s last win in series came in a 71-68 victory on the Hilltop (12/9/00).  The Mustangs are the first of two Big West opponents faced by the Dons this season.  USF posted a 2-2 record vs.

Big West foes last season with victories vs. UCSB (11/24/08) & Long Beach State (12/6/08).

LOWHORN 17TH ON CAREER SCORING LIST: Junior forward Dior Lowhorn continues to charge up the USF career scoring lists and became the 30th USF player to surpass 1,000 career points in the Green and Gold with 22 points at Portland (1/15/09). Lowhorn enters the opening week of the 2009-10 season with 1,240 career points in 61 games for a 20.3 points per game average. The Bay Area product currently rates 17th on the Dons all-time scoring ladder. USF Hall-of-Famer Dennis Black (1966-68) scored 1,269 points and sits in 16th place.

USF AT A GLANCE - 2008-09 SEASON BULLETS  USF’s offense ranked fourth among WCC Team Leaders in scoring (67.7) and was third in 3-point field goal percentage .359 (207-579) and second in 3-pointers (207)  USF’s six newcomers averaged 35.1 points, 16.9 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game and accounted for .518 of the Dons offense, .528 of USF’s rebounding and .701 of San Francisco’s assists  Junior forward Dior Lowhorn led the WCC in overall (20.1) and league (19.1) scoring for the second straight season becoming the first player to accomplish the feat in backto-back seasons since Gonzaga’s Jeff Brown did so in 1992-94.  San Francisco collected program victory No. 1,200 in a 70-62 triumph at Pepperdine (2/28/09) to close the regular season.

A LOOK AT THE DONS ENCORE PERFORMANCE - DIOR LOWHORN 2009 WCC FIRST TEAM AND LEAGUE SCORING LEADER... AGAIN: Senior forward Dior Lowhorn followed up a sensational sophomore season with a strong second season in the Green and Gold in 2008-09. Lowhorn led the West Coast Conference in scoring for the second consecutive season and captured the league scoring title in overall (20.1) and league games (19.1) for the second consecutive year. Lowhorn is the first player to lead the league in scoring in back-to-back seasons since Gonzaga’s Jeff Brown did so from 1993-94. For his efforts, Lowhorn captured AllWCC First Team honors for the second time. The Texas Tech transfer and Bay Area native turned in a prolific sophomore campaign, leading the league in overall (20.5) and WCC (20.5) scoring - the first USF player to pace the league in scoring in both categories since John Cox accomplished the feat in 2004-05 (20.0/19.9). Lowhorn’s sophomore tally of 636 points was good for fourth place on the Dons single-season scoring charts and his 604 as a junior ranked 10th. A 2008 Mid-Major AllAmerican Lowhorn has posted at least 20 points in 36 career games, including a career-high 32 against Pepperdine (3/6/09). Lowhorn owns 10 career double-doubles.

DIOR LOWHORN AMONG NATIONAL SCORING LEADERS: In his first two seasons on the Hilltop, senior forward Dior Lowhorn has cracked the top-30 Division I scoring list. The San Franciscan ranked No. 27 among final 2007-08 NCAA Division I scoring leaders at 20.5 points per game, becoming the first Don to crack the top-30 since John Cox (1999-05) did so as a senior. Lowhorn (20.1) ended his junior campaign ranked No. 23 among Division I leaders.

LOWHORN CLOSING IN ON 1,500 COMBINED CAREER POINTS: With a 23-point night at USC (12/1/08) senior forward Dior Lowhorn surpassed 1,000 combined career points and enters Friday’s 2009-10 season opener against Cal Poly with 1,470 points with 1,240 coming at USF and 230 at Texas Tech.

LOWHORN CRACKS SINGLE-SEASON SCORING LIST... AGAIN: With a careerhigh 32-point outburst against Pepperdine (3/6/09) in the first round of the 2009 West Coast Conference Tournament senior forward Dior Lowhorn completed his junior year with 604 points, good for 10th place on the USF single-season scoring list. Lowhorn ranked fourth in single-season history with 636 points (31 games) as a sophomore and became just the third player in school history to score 600 or more points twice in a career. USF All-Americans Quintin Dailey (755, 1982; 693, 1981) and Bill Cartwright (710, 1979; 600, 1977) were the first to accomplish the feat.

BLAKE WALLACE ON THE RISE: Senior forward Blake Wallace made an impact for USF during his first season on the Hilltop in 2008-09. The Irvine Valley JC transfer ranked fourth on the team in scoring (8.5), second in rebounds (4.1) and is second with 35 3-pointers. Wallace, who started his career at Pepperdine in 2006-07, scored a career-high 21 points at Hawaii (11/14/08) in the Verizon Wireless Tip-off Classic.

Wallace turned in his first USF double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in a double overtime win against Long Beach State (12/6/08). Wallace scored 19 points with five 3-pointers against the No. 19 Zags (2/14/09).

DONTAE BRYANT DRIVES AND DISHES: Senior guard Dontae Bryant did a solid job quarterbacking the USF offense in 2008-09 - his first season in the Green and Gold.

Bryant averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and led the team and ranked sixth in the West Coast Conference with 3.1 assists. The Oregonian has dished out at least four assists in 13 games this season with a career-high eight against Pepperdine (3/6/09).

DONS POST WINNING HOME RECORD: After posting a satisfying 67-66 overtime victory against ancient Bay Area and WCC rival Santa Clara in the 2009 Homecoming Game, USF closed out the 2008-09 home schedule with a 7-5 record. It was the best mark at War Memorial Gym for the Dons since posting the same mark in 2006-07.

A LOOK AHEAD: After taking on Cal Poly in the 2009-10 opener, San Francisco welcomes Dominican to the Hilltop Monday, November 16. Game time against the Penguins is set for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.

SCOUTING CAL POLY: The Mustangs have a new coach and seven new players on the roster for the 2009-10 campaign. Joe Callero enters his first season in San Luis Obispo and takes the reigns of a program that posted a 7-21 overall record and a 3-13 Big West slate for a ninth place finish. Two starters return for Cal Poly headlined by senior guard Lorenzo Keller, who ranked eighth in the Big West in scoring last year at 12.7 points per game. Junior guard Shawn Lewis added 11.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. The backcourt tandem accounted for 102 3-pointers in 2008-09. Callero begins the Cal Poly rebuilding project after spending the last eight seasons as the head coach at Seattle U. where he posted a 117-105 record highlighted by a 21-8 record in his last year in the Emerald City. In 10 seasons as a head coach, Callero owns an overall record of 139-130.

USF DOWNS OTTERS 91-77: The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team kicked off the 2009-2010 season with a 91-77 exhibition win against California State Monterey Bay on Saturday night in War Memorial Gym. The Dons used 12 players with eight seeing more than 10 minutes of court time. Senior forward Dior Lowhorn scored nearly a third of the Dons’ points with a game-high 30 points along with 10 rebounds. Sophomore Angelo Caloiaro finished with a double-double as well, totaling 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals after playing a game-high 33 minutes. True freshman Perris Blackwell chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds with Blake Wallace adding 11 points off the bench.

USF took a 14-point lead into halftime; extending it to 65-40 just five minutes into the second half on the tail of three consecutive baskets from Dior and back-to-back 3-pointers from Wallace.

The Otters kept the Dons from landing the knock-out punch -- responding with a 17-6 run to stay in the game. With 4:36 remaining in the game, Monterey Bay cut the lead to single digits at 77-68. The closest the Otters got, however, was within seven points before the Dons pulled away again. USF dominated under the basket, out rebounding Monterey 46-24.

QUOTING WALTERS: “Angelo made a lot of winning plays out there. I thought Blake came in and gave us some really good minutes and knocked down some shots. Perris did a good job, but played more minutes [30] than I would have liked to play him.

It’s good for our guys to get some success on the court, but I hope they see we have some more work to do. We just have to get better on the defensive end as a whole.”

A Junior College All-American - junior center Moustapha Diarra (Marseille, France) - combine with five prep standouts - forward Perris Blackwell (Etiwanda, CA), center Tomas Bruha (Prague, Czech Republic), guard Dominique O’Connor (Los Angeles), forward Nikola Stojiljkovic (Paris, France) and Michael Williams (Van Nuys, CA). In addition, sophomore guard Rashad Green (North Babylon, NY) is ready to make his Green and Gold debut after transferring from Manhattan and sitting out last season under NCAA transfer rules.

KWAME VAUGHN PROVIDING BIG SPARK FOR THE DONS: Sophomore guard Kwame Vaughn made strong contributions to the Dons in his first season in the Green and Gold. The Oakland native was the second-leading scorer on the team in 2008-09 at 10.8 points per game, leading all USF newcomers. Vaughn scored 17 points against Texas State (11/16/08) and added 11 points in back-to-back wins versus UC Santa Barbara (11/24/08) and Colorado State (11/29/08). Vaughn turned in a strong performance in a win at Boise State (12/13/08) with 18 points. The East Bay product scored a career-high 22 points - 19 in the second half - at San Jose State (12/22/08).

During WCC play, Vaughn averaged 10.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

ANGELO CALOIARO PROVIDES A BIG LIFT: Sophomore forward Angelo Caloiaro produced for USF in his first year of basketball on the Hilltop and averaged 6.0 points, ranks third on the team in rebounding with 3.9 boards and 1.4 assists per game.

Caloiaro scored a career-high 15 points in a win against UC Santa Barbara (11/24/08) and 14 points with a career-high seven rebounds against Colorado State (11/29/08).

The Mitty product has made 20 3-pointers, including a season-high three against Loyola Marymount (1/31/09). Caloiaro posted a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double in the Dons exhibition win against Cal State Monterey Bay (11/7/09).

SMITH TO WEAR FATHER’S RETIRED NUMBER: Sophomore guard Peter Smith will pay tribute to his father, former USF All-American and NBA standout Phil Smith, by wearing No. 20 for the 2009-10 season as announced today by Dons men’s basketball head coach Rex Walters. It marks the first time in school history, a player will be wearing a number officially retired by the program. A USF Legend of the Hilltop and Hall-of-Famer, Phil Smith scored 1,523 career points at USF (18.1 ppg) and as a rookie helped the Golden State Warriors to their only NBA Championship in 1975. Phil Smith passed away in 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer.

DONS BASKETBALL TRADITION  The 2009-10 season marks the 100th anniversary of the first team fielded by St. Ignatius College and this year’s squad is the 97th to represent the Green and Gold.  USF has won three national championships. The Dons won the 1949 NIT title under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell and then won back-to-back NCAA Championships in 1955-56 featuring three Naismith Hall-of-Famers: KC Jones, Bill Russell and head coach Phil Woolpert.  USF advanced to a then NCAA record three consecutive Final-Fours (1955-57)  San Francisco has achieved a top-25 national ranking in five different decades and has spent 28 weeks at No. 1. The Dons have spent 132 weeks in the top-25 poll(s).  At least one USF Don has been named to a major All-American list in seven decades  San Francisco has advanced to the postseason 21 times and owns a 27-18 (.600) all-time record, including a 21- 14 (.600) slate in 16 NCAA Tournament appearances  USF owns a WCC record of 439-293 (.600) in 57 league campaigns with a conference-best 15 regular season championships. The Dons were a charter member of the league which was first named the California Basketball Association.  A league record 11 Dons have earned WCC Player of the Year honors, including three-time selection Bill Cartwright (1977-79) and two-time selections Quintin Dailey (1980-81), Ollie Johnson (1964-65) and Mike Farmer (1957-58).  San Francisco owns the league record for most All-WCC first or second team selections (54 players/93 total awards) including four-time selection Bill Cartwright.

Eleven Dons have been named to the first or second team three times - the most in WCC history.  USF posted the 13th best record during the 1970’s of any Division I program at .719 (202-79) even though 16 losses (.202) came during the 1970-71 campaign.
