HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his second season on the Hilltop, all but one player on the 2009-10 roster was signed by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players who look prepared to follow Walters’ mantra: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. Coach Walters came to USF from Florida Atlantic University. In his first season at the helm, Walters guided Florida Atlantic to its second consecutive winning season the first time the Owls had done so since posting three straight from 1990-92. In 2006-07, the Owls won 10 Sun Belt Conference games, the third-most for a first-year Sun Belt member. The team also set a program scoring record, averaging 74.9 points per game. Prior to Florida Atlantic, Walters’ first collegiate coaching job came at Valparaiso, a two-year stint as an assistant under Homer Drew. The 2003-04 Hornets were 18-13 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Mid-Continent Conference with a record of 11-5. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game, leading the Jayhawks in scoring during both his junior and senior campaigns. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, averaging 4.6 points and 1.7 assists per game. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (13), Drew (11), Riley (8), Gunner (6), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. A LOOK AT THE DONS DIOR LOWHORN - 2009-10 MID-MAJOR ALLAMERICAN: Senior forward Dior Lowhorn was named to the 2009-10 Mid-Major Preseason AllAmerica Team as announced by CollegeInsider. com. Lowhorn followed up a sensational sophomore season with a strong second season in the Green and Gold in 2008-09. Lowhorn led the West Coast Conference in scoring for the second consecutive season and captured the league scoring title in overall (20.1) and league games (19.1) for the second consecutive year. Lowhorn is the first player to lead the league in scoring in back-to-back seasons since Gonzaga’s Jeff Brown did so from 1993-94. For his efforts, Lowhorn captured All-WCC First Team honors for the second time. The Texas Tech transfer and Bay Area native turned in a prolific sophomore campaign, leading the league in overall (20.5) and WCC (20.5) scoring - the first USF player to pace the league in scoring in both categories since John Cox accomplished the feat in 2004-05 (20.0/19.9). Lowhorn’s sophomore tally of 636 points was good for fourth place on the Dons single-season scoring charts and his 604 as a junior ranked 10th. A 2008 Mid-Major All-American Lowhorn has posted at least 20 points in 41 career games, including a career-high 32 against Pepperdine (3/6/09). Lowhorn owns 10 career double-doubles.

LOWDOWN ON LOWHORN  Two-Time All-WCC First Team (2008-09)  2009-10 Preseason MidMajor All-American and All-WCC  Ranked fourth on the USF single-season scoring chart (636) as a sophomore, 10th as a junior (604)  No. 14 in USF career scoring (1,341/20.3)  Led the WCC in scoring as a sophomore & junior (20.5/20.1)  First player since Gonzaga’s Jeff Brown (1993-94) to lead WCC in scoring in consecutive league campaigns  Has reached double-digit scoring in 67 of 69 games in his USF career, including 41 with 20 or more points  Ranked fifth in WCC in rebounds (6.9), third in 3-point field goal percentage (.432) and eighth in field goal percentage (.483)

DIOR LOWHORN AMONG NATIONAL SCORING LEADERS: In his first two seasons on the Hilltop, senior forward Dior Lowhorn has cracked the top-30 Division I scoring list. The San Franciscan ranked No. 27 among final 2007-08 NCAA Division I scoring leaders at 20.5 points per game, becoming the first Don to crack the top-30 since John Cox (1999-05) did so as a senior. Lowhorn (20.1) ended his junior campaign ranked No. 23 among Division I leaders. LOWHORN SURPASSES 1,600 COMBINED CAREER POINTS: With a 23-point night at USC (12/1/08) senior forward Dior Lowhorn surpassed 1,000 combined career points and enters Saturday’s game at Loyola Chicago with 1,624 points with 1,394 coming at USF and 230 at Texas Tech. LOWHORN CRACKS SINGLE-SEASON SCORING LIST... AGAIN: With a careerhigh 32-point outburst against Pepperdine (3/6/09) in the first round of the 2009 West Coast Conference Tournament senior forward Dior Lowhorn completed his junior year with 604 points, good for 10th place on the USF single-season scoring list. Lowhorn ranked fourth in single-season history with 636 points (31 games) as a sophomore and became just the third player in school history to score 600 or more points twice in a career. USF All-Americans Quintin Dailey (755, 1982; 693, 1981) and Bill Cartwright (710, 1979; 600, 1977) were the first to accomplish the feat. USF had more turnovers (9) than baskets (8) in the first half and struggled to get much going offensively, but an entirely different team emerged from the locker room for the second half. The Dons hit 11 of their first 13 shots and with 16 minutes and 12 seconds to play, went on a 20-3 run to take a 50-43 lead. During that stretch, Lowhorn went on a 10-0 run by himself, hitting four consecutive baskets then knocking down two free throws. The senior standout finished with a game-high 26 points, with 20 of Lowhorn’s points coming in the second half. Sophomore Angelo Caloiaro had nine second-half points to finish with 12, while classmate Kwame Vaughn finished with 15 points. Caloiaro, Lowhorn and freshman Perris Blackwell all had seven rebounds with senior Dontae Bryant adding five assists. The Dons only shot six 3-pointers, but they were awarded seven three-point play opportunities and converted six of them. Vaughn and Caloiaro each notched two. QUOTING WALTERS: “We weren’t the most confident team coming off the road and taking our lumps, but I thought after we got through the darkness we really started to execute our game plan. I thought our guys kind of saw the light at the end of the tunnel and they haven’t seen that in a while.”

DONS AND RAMBLERS REDUX: Two small Jesuit schools located in world class cities stood atop the basketball world 61 years ago when USF squared off against Loyola on the world’s biggest stage - Madison Square Garden. San Francisco took a 48-47 victory against the Ramblers in the title game in front of a capacity crowd behind a game-high 20 points from All-American center Don Lofgran. Ross Giudice, who later served as the assistant coach for USF’s back-to-back NCAA Championships (1955-56), secured the victory with a pair of free throws It was the second of three national championships won by the Dons in 1949-50 (soccer and tennis). San Francisco’s ascent to the top of the hoops heap was all the more staggering considering that Pete Newell’s Dons were just one season removed from posting a 13-11 record.

Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entrances with to the arena, new retired jerseys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference championship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs. The south lobby of the gym underwent construction as well to create a more permanent concessions area.
