HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstanding prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Conference. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of five highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the final homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and final overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and finish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. Game No. 6 - Holy Name Recap
SCOUTING CSUB: The Roadrunners enter Saturday’s showdown against San Francisco with a 3-4 overall record and have dropped their last two contests - a 85-75 setback at Cal State Fullerton (11/27) and an 81-77 home loss to Northern Arizona (11/30). CSUB did dispatch San Jose State 82-77 (11/24) at Rabobank Arena. As a team, the Runners shoot at a .420 pace from the field, but allow opponents to connect at a .450 rate. CSUB is not shy about hoisting up 3-pointers and average 18.6 3-point attempts per game on .362 shooting from beyond the arc. Opponents hold a 40.3-33.3 rebound advantage. Stephon Carter leads three CSUB players in double-digit scoring at 19.4 points with 4.4 rebounds per game. Donovan Bragg adds 14.3 points, while Alex Johnson chips in 13.4 points per contest. Rashad Savage adds nearly a double-double with 9.4 points and 10.3 boards. Keith Brown is in his sixth season as the top Runner and guided CSUB through the reclassification process.
USF HANDLES HAWKS 89-86: USF men’s basketball snapped a two-game losing streak with a narrower-than-expected 86-83 win over Holy Names University (3-7) Wednesday night at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (3-3) led the game by as many as 24-points early in the second half, but USF turnovers and a long range shooting exhibition by the Hawks (3-7) made it a close contest late.

Game time against the Cardinals is set for 4:00 PM at the KFC Yum! Center. After a home game against Montana (12/12/10), the Dons travel to Seattle to play at No. 22/23 Washington and then face No. 17/19 San Diego State in Las Vegas.
Freshman guard Cody Doolin had a breakout game for USF, recording his first career double-double. Doolin knocked down 6-of-9 shots en route to a team-leading and career-high 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds. The Texan went 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Four other Dons scored double-figures on the night as the team shot the ball extremely well – when it held onto it. USF scored 45 in the first half on .630 (17-27) shooting, and 44 in the second half on .560 (14-25) shooting. Sophomore guard Michael Williams, senior center Moustapha Diarra, and freshman forward Cole Dickerson each had 13 for the Dons. Sophomore forward Perris Blackwell added 11 points and brought in a career-high 13 rebounds to match Doolin with his first career double-double. But even with sizzling shooting, the Dons showed their youth and were unable to put away a determined Hawks team playing its lone game of the season against a Division I opponent. USF turned the ball over a season-high 23 times, leading to 23 points for the visitors. Holy Names wasn’t able to capitalize much in the first half, as they struggled to find the hoop. The Hawks shot just .303 (10-33) in the first half and a dismal 1-14 from behind the arc, racking up just 27 points. HAWK HATCHLINGS: USF was extremely careless with the basketball and committed a whopping 15 turnovers in the first half and a seasonhigh 23 for the game San Francisco’s Cody Doolin turned in the first double-double by a USF guard since Rashad Green turned in a 12-point, 14-rebound effort against Pepperdine (2/11/10) The Dons abused the Hawks in the paint, out-scoring Loyola 34-18 and held a commanding 43-22 rebound edge Holy Names out-scored USF reserves 48-25

DONS RACE PAST ROADRUNNERS 82-73: The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team captured an 82-73 win against California State Bakersfield on Wednesday night at War Memorial Gym to head into the holiday break on a high note. Bakersfield got off to a fast start, opening the game on a 9-0 run keeping USF scoreless until nearly three and a half minutes into the contest. The Dons slowly closed that gap with their half-court trap, keeping the Roadrunners from knocking down a field goal for nearly six minutes. After knocking Bakersfield off balance, USF went into its own drought that lasted more than eight minutes without a field goal. A technical foul on Bakersfield for arguing a foul call with 4.9 seconds to in the half, switched the momentum back to the Dons. Senior forward Dior Lowhorn hit all four free throws to give USF a one-point halftime lead. The Dons opened the second half on a 17-5 run to take control of the game. During that stretch, freshman Michael Williams was fouled hard on a breakaway, resulting in flagrant foul on Bakersfield’s Trent Blakley. The Roadrunners’ leading scorer was ejected from the game. Williams later returned to the game after getting stitches above his right eye and taping his protective glasses back together. Lowhorn made all four free throws resulting from the play and less than a minute later added two more free throws after the Roadrunners were issued another technical foul for taunting. Lowhorn attempted a career-high 21 free throws, making 17 of them. He finished with a game-high 27 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kwame Vaughn added 22 points, making six field goals and going 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Bryant totaled seven assists, while Rashad Green had 10 points and five rebounds. ROADRUNNER LEFTOVERS: It was the second time Kwame Vaughn and Dior Lowhorn have scored 20-plus in the same contest - Dominican (11/16/09). San Francisco held a 34-31 rebound edge. It was the first meeting in the all-time series. USF held a whopping 41-25 edge in bench scoring. The Dons did a great job attacking the rim vs. CSUB and shot 41 free throws, 27 coming in the second half.

Dailey was 49. Most recently, Dailey has devoted his time working with at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area as a supervisor at the Parkdale Community Center. A prep standout at Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore, Dailey made an immediate impact at USF for head coach Dan Belluomini, averaging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and helping the Dons to a 22-7 record. “Quintin Dailey was a tremendous basketball player,” said former USF head coach Dan Belluomini, who recruited Dailey. “When the ball went up nobody competed harder than he did. I always appreciated his hard work and his ability to rise to the occasion. It’s a shame that he passed so early.” One of the most prolific offensive threats in USF and West Coast Conference history, Dailey departed campus after three seasons ranked No. 2 in career scoring at 1,841 points (20.5) and No. 13 on the WCC scoring list. Dailey owns the Bay Area Division I single-season scoring record with 755 points (25.2), done as a senior.
