HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstanding prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Conference. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of five highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the final homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and final overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and finish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. Game No. 5 - Loyola Ramblers

Game No. 4 - Montana State Recap

SCOUTING LOYOLA: The Ramblers enter Saturday with an unblemished 6-0 record after posting a road win at Western Michigan (82-64) last Saturday followed by a home blowout of Alabama State (74-46) Monday. Loyola is shooting for its first 7-0 start since the 1962-63 campaign, when the Ramblers rattled off a 21-0 streak. Junior guard Jordan Hicks leads five Loyola players in double-digit scoring at 14.2 points and 4.5 rebounds, while junior forward Walt Gibler chips in 13.0 points and 3.8 boards. The Ramblers shoot a sizzling .447 (46-103) from beyond the 3-point arc and take advantage at the charity stripe, converting at .753 (119-158) at the foul line. Loyola has been solid on the road against non-league foes and have won five of its last seven away from the Gentile Center with the only setbacks coming at Creighton and Kansas State. Jim Whitesell is in his seventh season as the top Rambler and has constructed a 99-92 slate in Chicago. Whitesell lifted Loyola to a 21-win season in 2006-07.

USF FALLS 76-59 AT MONTANA STATE: USF got off to another slow start on the road and Montana State capitalized, rolling to a 76-59 victory in non-conference action on a frigid Friday night at Worthington Arena. The Dons (2-2) drop their second straight road game to the Bobcats (5-1) who collect their fifth consecutive win and open the season at 5-1 for the first time since 1997-98.

San Francisco never led and MSU jumped out to a 17-8 advantage with 14:15 left and never looked back. The Dons cut the lead to nine, 66-57 on a lay-up by sophomore forward Perris Blackwell with 2:34 remaining, but the Bobcats responded and quickly rebuilt a double-digit margin. Blackwell finished with seven rebounds and went 7-of-10 from the field, while Williams shot 6-of-12 with three boards. Junior guard Rashad Green added 11 points off the bench and pulled down seven rebounds. Bobby Howard scored a game-high 24 points, while Erik Rush added 23 for the Bobcats. USF shot .404 (21-52) from the field and misfired early and often from long distance finishing at a dismal .143 (2-14) and none after the opening three minutes. Montana State hit at a .421 (2457), but made .313 (10-32) from deep. San Francisco managed just four assists and coughed up 15 turnovers. No Don dished more than one assist. DONS AND RAMBLERS REDUX: Two small Jesuit schools located in world class cities stood atop the basketball world 62 years ago when USF squared off against Loyola on the world’s biggest stage - Madison Square Garden. San Francisco took a 48-47 victory against the Ramblers in the title game in front of a capacity crowd behind a game-high 20 points from All-American center Don Lofgran. Ross Giudice, who later served as the assistant coach for USF’s back-to-back NCAA Championships (1955-56), secured the victory with a pair of free throws. It was the second of three national championships won by the Dons in 1949-50 (soccer and tennis). San Francisco’s ascent to the top of the hoops heap was all the more staggering considering that Pete Newell’s Dons were just one season removed from posting a 13-11 record. 1949 DONS TEAM HIGHLIGHTS: - USF defeated Manhattan (68-43), Utah (64-63), Bowling Green (49-39) and Loyola of Chicago (48-47) to win the title. - The Dons were coached by USF and Naismith Hall of Famer Pete Newell. - The Dons finished the season with a 25-5 mark, after finishing just 13-11 the previous season. - Don Lofgran led the team in scoring with 14.7 ppg - At the time of USF’s championship, the NIT was considered the top postseason tournament. NCAA champion Kentucky lost in an early round of the NIT. - Guards Ross Giudice (USF), Rene Herrerias (California) and forward John Benington (Michigan State) went on to become major college coaches. - Newell and his USF successor, Phil Woolpert, were teammates at Loyola University of L.A. and were coached there by legendary USF coach Jimmy Needles. - The Dons beat Loyola of Chicago on a last second freethrow by Giudice. - Former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle served as the team’s sports information director.

Dailey was 49. Most recently, Dailey has devoted his time working with at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area as a supervisor at the Parkdale Community Center. A prep standout at Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore, Dailey made an immediate impact at USF for head coach Dan Belluomini, averaging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and helping the Dons to a 22-7 record. “Quintin Dailey was a tremendous basketball player,” said former USF head coach Dan Belluomini, who recruited Dailey. “When the ball went up nobody competed harder than he did. I always appreciated his hard work and his ability to rise to the occasion. It’s a shame that he passed so early.” One of the most prolific offensive threats in USF and West Coast Conference history, Dailey departed campus after three seasons ranked No. 2 in career scoring at 1,841 points (20.5) and No. 13 on the WCC scoring list. Dailey owns the Bay Area Division I single-season scoring record with 755 points (25.2), done as a senior.
