HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF

by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstanding prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together.

San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Conference. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of five highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the final homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and final overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara.

San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and finish (fourth) since 2007.

Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player.

Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year.

After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat.

Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

DONS TAKE ON SPARTANS IN SOUTH BAY DONS BATTLE SPARTANS WEDNESDAY: San Francisco takes on Bay Area rival San Jose State Wednesday in a South Bay showdown. The Dons are fresh off a 97-76 triumph against Seattle U. Friday at War Memorial Gym in the first meeting between the two teams since 1980. San Jose State won its opener at Eastern Washington with a 67-60 victory at Reese Court in Cheney. USF took the last meeting between the two teams with a 76-71 win at War Memorial Gym December 8, 2009.

DONS AND SPARTANS

 USF plays San Jose State for the 61st time overall and for the third consecutive year after an 11-year hiatus in a series dating back to at least the 1935-36 season.  The Dons took a 76-71 win at War Memorial Gym last December 8 in the Spartans first USF IN SEASON OPENERS: Since 1985-86, San visit to the Hilltop since 1997.

Francisco owns a 15-11 record in season open USF dropped a 82-76 ers. The Dons have won four of their last seven decision to SJSU in the South lid-lifters, including a 97-76 triumph against Seattle Bay (12/22/08). Kwame Vaughn U. (11/12), boosting head coach Rex Walters to scored 22 for the Dons.

A RETURN TO THE 90S: USF’s run and gun offense was showcased in its 97-76 win against Seattle U. (11/12/10) in the 201011 season opener. The Dons posted its first 90-plus point night against a Division I opponent since a 93-63 win against Sacramento State (11/17/07). The Dons set a program record with a 129-64 win against Holy Names (1/2/10) and also posted a 9266 win vs. Dominican (11/16/09).

ANGELO CALOIARO DOUBLES UP FOR THE DONS: Junior forward Angelo Caloiaro enjoyed a monster night in USF’s 97-76 win against Seattle U. (11/12/10) and turned in his first career double-double with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. Caloiaro connected on 6-of-11 from the field to share the team lead in scoring.

A LOOK AT THE DONS ANGELO CALOIARO PROVIDES A BIG LIFT: Junior forward Angelo Caloiaro continued to elevate his game for USF as a sophomore and turned in the most accurate season from beyond the arc in program history in the process. The South Bay product connected on a whopping .491 (55-112) from long distance, good for second place among West Coast Conference leaders. Caloiaro elevated his game during league play and ranked third on the team in scoring (10.3), while shooting at a .495 (45-91) clip from the floor and .492 (31-63) from beyond the arc. In his first season at USF, Caloiaro averaged 6.0 points, ranked third on the team in rebounding with 3.9 boards and 1.4 assists per game. Caloiaro scored a career-high 21 points in a 77-47 win against Pepperdine (2/11/10), connecting on 5-of-7 3-pointers. The Mitty product added 20 points in an 71-68 overtime triumph at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara (2/20/10).

Caloiaro pulled a career-high nine rebounds against South Florida (12/19/09).

THE MOOSE IS LOOSE: Senior center Moustapha Diarra showed signs of emerging as a force for USF during his first season on the Hilltop after an All-American junior college career at Sheridan College (Wyo.). Diarra turned in his first USF double-double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds at No. 19 Washington (12/27/09) and scored a career-high with 21 points on 9-of-10 from the field against Holy Names (1/2/10). For the season, Diarra ranked fifth on the team in scoring (6.4) and led the team in field goal percentage at .507 (74-146).

GREEN LIGHT: Junior guard Rashad Green made some big contributions during his first season at USF. The Manhattan transfer averaged 6.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Dons and ranked fourth in scoring and third in rebounding. During league play, the New Yorker upped his game averaging 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds. Green scored a career-high 21 points at Colorado State (11/29/09).

SOUTHLAND BACKCOURT: USF looks forward to fielding its Los Angeles City Player of the Year backcourt at last during the 2010-11 season. The Dons welcome back redshirt freshman Dominique O’Connor, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, and sophomore Michael Williams, who added instant offense at times for the Green and Gold. Both O’Connor and Williams were selected as the LA City Player of the Year in separate publications following standout prep careers at Westchester and Taft respectively. Williams averaged 5.5 points per game and connected on .433 (29-67) from 3-point range as a freshman.

SAN FRANCISCO PARTICIPATES IN THE 2010-11 JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than eight games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2010-11 season. The Dons make their season debut against former West Coast Conference member Seattle U. Friday, November 12. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the third consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Game One - Seattle U. Recap

SCOUTING SJSU: The Spartans opened up the 2010-11 season on the road Friday and seized a 67-60 win at Eastern Washington. Senior guard Adrian Oliver put on a show at Reese Court, dropping 34 points on the Eagles. No other Spartan reached double-digit scoring. SJSU hit on just .327 (18-55) from the field, but took care of the basketball and forced 17 EWU miscues. San Jose State posted a 14-17 record last season and went 6-10 during WAC action for a sixth place finish. Oliver averaged a team-high 22.5 points and pulled down 5.3 rebounds per game as a junior, while senior guard Justin Graham is the next highest returning scorer for San Jose State at 9.4 points and 5.1 boards a night. George Nessman is in his sixth season at the helm and owns a 52-103 record in the South Bay.

USF RACES PAST REDHAWKS 97-76: A nice crowd showed up to see the USF men’s basketball 2010-11 season opener against Seattle U. and they got to see a track meet at no extra charge.

The Dons (1-0) turned on the lights to start the season at War Memorial Gym and then shot them out, winning 97-76 in the fastest 40 minutes of basketball they will likely play all season.

Seattle likes to run and maximize the transition game, but USF did not let Seattle get out and run in the open court. USF forced Seattle into unfamiliar territory – half court offense – and it paid off time and time again as Seattle forced up bad shots and went ice cold early in the first half.

Despite the speedy pace up and down the court, USF held Seattle scoreless for long stretches in the first half and held them to just 10 points at the midway point of the first half, all the while pouring in 22 points of their own. Junior forward Angelo Caloiaro turned in his first career double-double performance with 18 points to go along with a career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Michael Williams added 18 points, while senior center Moustapha Diarra and freshman guard Marko Petrovic each added eight.

The Dons roster features nine freshmen with four guards - Marko Petrovic (Zagreb, Croatia), Osekalome Akhile (Oakland, CA), Avery Johnson (Huntington Beach, CA) and Cody Doolin (Austin, TX); four forwards Charles Standifer (Sacramento, CA), Khalil Murphy (Willingboro, NJ), Cole Dickerson (Federal Way, WA), Antoine Roy-Condron (Long Beach, CA) and one center - Justin Raffington (Bad Krotzingen, Germany).

JUST HOW YOUNG ARE THE DONS? USF enters the 2010-11 season with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. According to a survey conducted by the University of Kentucky of all Division I programs, the Dons are tied for the seventh least experienced roster in basketball. The breakdown follows. 4: Eastern Washington; 5: Sacramento State, UT-Arlington; 6: Idaho, Radford, Cal State Fullerton; 7: San Francisco, UC Riverside, Louisiana-Monroe. Seven schools reported eight years of Division I experience. Overall, 22 schools reported less than 10 years of experience.

MORE WILDCATS ON THE BENCH: USF head coach Rex Walters elevated Justin Bauman to assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and also added former Kansas team captain Michael Lee to the bench. Bauman spent his first two seasons at USF as the Director of Basketball Operations. Both Bauman and Lee were inducted into the Kansas Jayhawks Athletic Hall of Fame for their connection with the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Coach Bauman served as the head student assistant for the Jayhawks in 2003-04 under Bill Self, while Coach Lee served as a James Naismith team captain during his junior campaign.

Dailey was 49. Most recently, Dailey has devoted his time working with at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area as a supervisor at the Parkdale Community Center.

A prep standout at Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore, Dailey made an immediate impact at USF for head coach Dan Belluomini, averaging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and helping the Dons to a 22-7 record.

“Quintin Dailey was a tremendous basketball player,” said former USF head coach Dan Belluomini, who recruited Dailey. “When the ball went up nobody competed harder than he did. I always appreciated his hard work and his ability to rise to the occasion. It’s a shame that he passed so early.”

One of the most prolific offensive threats in USF and West Coast Conference history, Dailey departed campus after three seasons ranked No. 2 in career scoring at 1,841 points (20.5) and No. 13 on the WCC scoring list. Dailey owns the Bay Area Division I single-season scoring record with 755 points (25.2), done as a senior.

DONS BASKETBALL TRADITION  The 2010-11 season marks the 101st anniversary of the first team fielded by St. Ignatius College and this year’s squad is the 98th to represent the Green and Gold.  USF has won three national championships. The Dons won the 1949 NIT title under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell and then won back-to-back NCAA Championships in 1955-56 featuring three Naismith Hall-of-Famers: KC Jones, Bill Russell and head coach Phil Woolpert.  USF advanced to a then NCAA record three consecutive Final-Fours (1955-57)  San Francisco has achieved a top-25 national ranking in five different decades and has spent 28 weeks at No. 1. The Dons have spent 132 weeks in the top-25 poll(s).  At least one USF Don has been named to a major All-American list in seven decades  San Francisco has advanced to the postseason 21 times and owns a 27-18 (.600) all-time record, including a 21- 14 (.600) slate in 16 NCAA Tournament appearances  USF owns a WCC record of 444-302 (.595) in 58 league campaigns with a conference-best 15 regular season championships. The Dons were a charter member of the league which was first named the California Basketball Association.  A league record 11 Dons have earned WCC Player of the Year honors, including three-time selection Bill Cartwright (1977-79) and two-time selections Quintin Dailey (1980-81), Ollie Johnson (1964-65) and Mike Farmer (1957-58).  San Francisco owns the league record for most All-WCC first or second team selections (54 players/94 total awards) including four-time selection Bill Cartwright.

Twelve Dons have been named to the first or second team three times - the most in WCC history.  USF posted the 13th best record during the 1970’s of any Division I program at .719 (202-79) even though 16 losses (.202) came during the 1970-71 campaign.
