GAME NOTES THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: After collecting a satisfying win against No. 9 Northwestern and a short-handed tie against Cal State Fullerton, USF returns to the Hilltop to host another top-25 team when No, 20 Cal State Bakersfield makes its first trip to Negoesco Stadium. It will be the first ever meeting between the Dons and Runners. Cal State Bakersfield is the lone opponent of the week for the Dons, who welcome Stanford to the Hilltop Thursday, September 17 as part of the 2010 Bay Area Soccer Classic. A LOOK AT THE ROADRUNNERS: Cal State Bakersfield opened the 2010 season with a flourish, posting a tremendous upset 1-0 overtime win against No. 7 UC Santa Barbara and then took down UC Davis 3-1 during the opening weekend. In the process the Roadrunners achieved the first top-20 ranking in Division I program history, entering the Soccer America polls at No. 20. CSUB will be tested as it embarks on an eight-game road trip beginning Saturday afternoon in San Francisco. THREE DONS CAPTURE ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: After posting a runnerup tournament showing to host Saint Mary’s in the 2010 Saint Mary’s Invitational, three USF players captured all-tournament honors. Freshman forward Tanner Smith, who provided the game-winner for the Dons in their 1-0 upset win against No. 9 Northwestern Friday, made the squad along with senior forward Bryan Burke, who assisted on the game-winer and freshman defender Fred Loechen. USF IN SEASON OPENERS: Since 2000, USF owns a 7-4-0 overall record in season openers after posting an impressive 1-0 victory against No. 9 Northwestern in its 2010 debut. USF opened 2009 in impressive fashion with a 4-1 dismantling of UMKC under the\ lights at Negoesco. Before breaking through against the Kangaroos, the Dons had dropped back-to-back openers - 1-0 losses on the road at No. 20 Northwestern in 2008 and at home to Vermont to start 2007. BRYAN BURKE NAMED TO 2010 WCC PRESEASON TEAM: Senior forward Bryan Burke was named to the 2010 West Coast Conference Preseason Team for the second consecutive season. Burke led the team in assists last season with seven, good for fourth place among WCC leaders and was second on the Dons in points with 11. A two-time All-WCC Second Team selection, Burke is the top returning scorer for USF this season and assisted on the game-winning goal against No. 9 Northwestern (9/3/10). UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: USF opens play in the 2010 Bay Area Soccer Classic when it hosts Stanford Thursday, September 16 at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons wrap up play at No 18 Cal Sunday in a 3:30 PM kick-off at Edwards Stadium.
