GAME NOTES THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: San Francisco closes the first half of the West Coast Conference schedule when it travels to the Pacific Northwest to take on Portland and Gonzaga. The Dons tackle the Bulldogs Friday, October 13 at the Gonzaga Soccer Field and then travel to the Rose City to play a Sunday matinee against the Pilots at Merlo Field. GONZAGA GAZING: Gonzaga continues to search for its first West Coast Conference win of the season and plays just its third home match of the season when it hosts USF Friday in Spokane. The Bulldogs have dropped four straight matches and have been out-scored 22-9 overall and 10-3 in WCC contests. Stefan Eysteinsson and Zach Smith share the team lead with a pair of goals apiece, while Philippe Garre has a team-high three assists. PILOT PLOTTING: Portland is off to a solid start to West Coast Conference play and earned a road split last weekend in Southern California. The Pilots took a 1-0 decision at San Diego Friday and suffered a 3-2 setback at Loyola Marymount. Portland owns a modest 17-15 goals advantage as Ryan Luke paces the club with five strikes on the year, while Jarad van Schaik adds three goals and two assists. Austin Guerrero has started all 11 matches with three shutouts and a 1.26 GAA. CORTEZ HONORED: Senior midfielder Victor Cortez capped a sensational match at Santa Clara with selection to the College Soccer News Team of the Week. A four-year starter for the Dons, Cortez picked an excellent time for his first career multi-goal match when he scored twice in a thrilling 2-2 deadlock at ancient West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara. Trailing 2-0, Cortez scored on a scramble in the box and then with just :05 remaining in regulation, rocketed a 40-yard blast to the upper v for the dramatic equalizer. USF YOUTH MOVEMENT: With just six returning upperclassmen and eight overall on the 2010 roster, USF has endured some growing pains during the first half of the season. After 11 matches Dons underclassmen have made no fewer than 58 of a possible 121 starts this season and newcomers have cracked the starting lineup 43 times. LONG STRANGE TRIP: With a 2-2 deadlock at Santa Clara last Friday, USF completed a grueling stretch of four matches in eight days. Further validating Murphy’s Law, the Dons played back-to-back double overtime contests - a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Saint Mary’s (10/6) before recovering at Santa Clara. UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: San Francisco welcomes ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara to the Hilltop Friday, October 22 in a 7:00 PM match at Negoesco Stadium. The match is part of the 2010 USF Fall Fest Weekend. USF will pay tribute to members of the 1980 NCAA Champion Dons in a pre-match ceremony.
