GAME NOTES THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: San Francisco welcomes the Pacific Northwest schools to the Hilltop this week for West Coast Conference action in the final home matches of the season for the Green and Gold. The Dons look to avenge lopsided losses up north beginning Friday, October 29 when 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Portland comes to the Hilltop. The Dons then welcome the Bulldogs of Gonzaga for a Sunday matinee in the 2010 home finale. The Dons will honor its senior class - Bryan Burke, Victor Cortez, Rafai Eddy, Jeff Penna and Justin Warren - in a pre-match ceremony. PILOT PLOTTING: Portland continues its tear through the West Coast Conference play and have lost just once since September 24, posting a 6-1-2 record during the stretch. Portland owns a 23-17 goals advantage as Ryan Luke and Jarad van Schaik pace the Pilots with six goals apiece. Austin Guerrero has started all 14 matches with four shutouts and a 1.13 GAA. Despite an 8-2-4 slate on the season, the Pilots have not generated much national poll acceptance, cracking just the College Soccer News at No. 30. GONZAGA GAZING: After defeating San Francisco at home for its first West Coast Conference win of the season, Gonzaga has dropped back-to-back matches against Saint Mary’s (1-0) and Portland (2-1). The Bulldogs have dropped six of their last seven and have been out-scored 24-12 overall and 12-6 in WCC contests. Stefan Eysteinsson owns the team lead with three goals apiece, while Philippe Garre has a team-high four assists. KARL KRAFT CONNECTS: Freshman midfielder Karl Kraft scored his first career goal for San Francisco last Friday against ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara (10/22). The Norwegian volleyed in a feed from freshman midfielder Mauricio Diaz De Leon from 10 yards. Norway has provided both the men’s and women’s soccer programs with offense this season. Freshmen Hanna Haanes (4 goals) and Christina Moberg (3) have made an impact for the women’s squad. Freshman midfielder Vergard Karlsen and Kraft both have registered an assist on the year. USF YOUTH MOVEMENT: With just six returning upperclassmen and eight overall on the 2010 roster, USF has endured some growing pains during the first half of the season. After 14 matches Dons underclassmen have made no fewer than 90 of a possible 154 starts this season and newcomers have cracked the starting lineup 57 times. UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: San Francisco travels across the Bay Bridge to tackle longtime Bay Area rival Saint Mary’s in midweek action Wednesday, November 3 in Moraga. The Dons look to avenge a 1-0 double overtime loss at Negoesco Stadium to the Gaels on October 6. A 2009 NCAA Tournament participant, Saint Mary’s enters the week with a 7-5-1 overall, 3-3-0 in West Coast Conference play.
