GAME NOTES THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: San Francisco welcomes ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara to the Hilltop Friday, October 22 in a 7:00 PM contest at Negoesco Stadium. The match is part of the 2010 USF Fall Fest Weekend and a variety of special events are in store for those visiting the Hilltop. USF will pay tribute to members of the 1980 NCAA Champion Dons in a pre-game ceremony and will also introduce the 2010 Fr. Hubert Hub” Flynn Athletics Hall of Fame inductees. Dons career scoring leader Dag Olavson ’81 will be the latest soccer legend enshrined in Saturday’s Hall of Fame Banquet. BRONCO BUSTERS: Santa Clara posted a 2-0-4 record through the first half of the 2010 West Coast Conference slate. The Broncos posted back-to-back deadlocks last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Loyola Marymount, followed by a 2-2 result at defending league champion San Diego. SCU is riding an eight-match unbeaten string into the fourth week of WCC play, with no fewer than five ties during the span. The Broncos have scored and allowed 20 goals and allowed 19 in 14 matches this year. DONS & BRONCOS - THE SERIES: While USF owns a 30-20-9 record in the alltime series, dating back to 1967, Santa Clara has enjoyed the better of the rivalry of late. Since 2000, the Broncos have compiled a 11-3-3 record against the Dons. USF has rebounded of late and own a 2-1-2 mark against SCU since the start of the 2008 season. The Dons and Broncos battled to a 2-2 standstill earlier this season at Buck Shaw Stadium (10/8). CORTEZ CONNECTS AGAIN: Senior midfielder Victor Cortez notched his third goal in two matches with a scoring strike at Gonzaga (10/15). The four-year starter for the Dons scored twice in a thrilling 2-2 deadlock at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara (10/8), including a long-range equalizer with five seconds remaining in regulation. USF YOUTH MOVEMENT: With just six returning upperclassmen and eight overall on the 2010 roster, USF has endured some growing pains during the first half of the season. After 13 matches Dons underclassmen have made no fewer than 73 of a possible 143 starts this season and newcomers have cracked the starting lineup 53 times. UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: San Francisco welcomes the Pacific Northwest schools to the Hilltop next week for West Coast Conference action. The Dons look to avenge lopsided losses up north beginning Friday, October 29 when 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Portland comes to the Hilltop. The Dons then welcome the Bulldogs of Gonzaga for a Sunday matinee in the 2010 home finale. The Dons will honor its senior class - Bryan Burke, Victor Cortez, Rafai Eddy, Jeff Penna and Justin Warren - in a pre-match ceremony.
