GAME NOTES THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: USF concludes an exceptionally busy week when it welcomes Saint Mary’s to Negoesco Stadium Wednesday, October 6 for a rare midweek West Coast Conference match. The Dons then travel south to take on ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The match against the Broncos will be the fourth match for USF in eight days. GAELS GAZING: Saint Mary’s opened the 2010 West Coast Conference campaign with a split, posting a 1-0 overtime win against defending league champion San Diego before dropping a 1-0 decision to Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Five Gaels have scored at least once, led by three scoring strikes from Tom Mohoric. Trevor Newquist adds two goals and a team-high three assists for SMC, which has out-scored opponents 10-9 this season. BRONCO BUSTERS: Santa Clara posted a 1-0-1 start to the 2010 West Coast Conference slate. The Broncos posted a hard-fought 1-1 deadlock at 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Portland on Sunday after scoring three unanswered goals to beat Gonzaga 3-1 in Spokane. SCU is riding a four-match unbeaten string into the second week of league play and have scored and allowed 13 goals in 10 matches this year. USF YOUTH MOVEMENT: With just six returning upperclassmen and eight overall on the 2010 roster, USF has endured some growing pains during the first half of the season. After nine matches Dons underclassmen have made no fewer than 50 of a possible 99 starts this season and newcomers have cracked the starting lineup 37 times. REMAIN CALM: Although an 0-2 start to the West Coast Conference schedule is never the goal, it does not necessarily mean success is not on the horizon. USF started WCC play with an 0-2 slate in 2004 and eventually won the league title. The Dons also made the NCAA Tournament in 2006 after an 0-2 WCC start. USF IN WEST COAST CONFERENCE OPENERS: San Francisco opens West Coast Conference play Friday night against Loyola Marymount. The Dons own an overall record of 12-10 in league lid-lifters dating to the start of round robin conference play in 1988 with a gaudy 9-3 mark at Negoesco Stadium; 4-7 on the road. USF has struggled out of the WCC gate since 2000, posting just a 3-7 record, but took a 1-0 road decision at Gonzaga to open the 2008 campaign in the first opening decision a 4-0 win against Saint Mary’s in 2002. UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: San Francisco closes the first half of the West Coast Conference schedule when it travels to the Pacific Northwest to take on Portland and Gonzaga. The Dons tackle the Bulldogs Friday, October 13 at the Gonzaga Soccer Field and then play a Sunday matinee against the Pilots at Merlo Field. VISSER’S CHAMPIONSHIP CREDENTIALS: A three-time WCC Coach of the Year (2004-05, 2008), Visser owns deep ties to the soccer program at the University of San Francisco. A defender on two USF NCAA Championship teams (1978, 1980), Visser spent 19 seasons as an assistant coach under soccer legend Steve Negoesco before taking the reigns as head coach for the 2001 campaign. Along the way, Visser also started the women’s soccer program on the Hilltop in 1985 and served as head coach for six years. Visser is active in the USA National Team program and served as the top assistant for the U-20 team that finished 13th in the 2001 Youth World Cup in Argentina. Visser recorded his 50th career victory at Portland (11/10/05) and owns an overall mark of 88-81-12. Former Dons standout Josh McKay is in his eighth season as top assistant coach and fourth as an associate head coach, while Tyler Gottschalk is in his seventh campaign as an assistant. Dan Chamberlain is the newest addition to the staff, coming to the Hilltop after a serving as an assistant at Stanford last season. USF ONCE AGAIN FEATURES THE UNITED NATIONS LINEUP: USF men’s soccer boasts a long and distinguished history of drawing outstanding players from throughout the world and the 2010 squad is no exception. This year’s roster features players from five countries and four continents. The country roll call features 34 players from the United States, three Dons from Norway, and one each from Colombia, Japan and Sweden. PLENTY OF BONUS SOCCER: Sometimes 90 minutes is not enough action for USF soccer and since the start of the 2004 season it has competed in 32 overtime matches. So far in 2010, San Francisco owns a 1-1-1 slate in matches going beyond regulation, highlighted by a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime triumph against Cal State Northridge (9/24/10). The Dons played a remarkable seven matches that reached double overtime in 2005 and registered a 2-1-4 overall record, 1-1-3 during West Coast Conference play. Since the start of 2004, USF owns a 10-10-12 slate during “bonus soccer” matches. WINNING THE CLOSE ONES: Since the start of the 2003 season San Francisco has played in 83 matches (10.8 per year) decided by one goal and posted a 4-6 record in 2009. USF played a whopping 12 contests decided by a one goal margin in 2008 and recorded a 5-7 slate, but won five of its last eight to end the season. The Dons played 13 matches in 2006 decided by one goal, registering an 8-5 record in those contests. Dating back to October of the 2003 campaign, USF owns a 43-45 ledger in one goal matches. ROAD WARRIORS: San Francisco has proven tough on the road and since the start of the 2005 season owns a 24-25-2 record in true away matches, while posting a 17-173 slate in West Coast Conference road tilts since the start of the 2004 campaign. The Dons are 3-2-3 at neutral sites during the same span. USF posted a sparkling 4-1-1 WCC road record in 2008. THREE RETURNING DONS EARN ALL-WCC HONORS: USF welcomes back three players who captured All-West Coast Conference honors a year ago, including senior forward Bryan Burke, who captured second team selection for the second consecutive season. Burke also appeared on the 2010 All-WCC Preseason Team as selected by the league’s coaches for the second time in as many years. Senior midfielder Victor Cortez was an honorable mention selection for the second time, while sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Roslund collected WCC all-freshman squad accolades. CABRERA CONNECTS: Junior forward Felipe Cabrera scored his first goal of the season Sunday against San Diego (10/3). Senior midfielder Victor Cortez and sophomore midfielder Vinny Caloiaro assisted on the play. It was the second career strike for Cabrera and the first since scoring against the Academy of Art as a freshman. 1980 NCAA CHAMPION DONS 30TH ANNIVERSARY: USF remembers the 1980 NCAA Championship squad on the 30th anniversary of the Dons bringing another title to the Hilltop. San Francisco posted an unblemished 23-0-2 record, capped by a thrilling 4-3 overtime triumph against Indiana in the finals. A truly dominant offensive force, the Dons out-scored opponents 86-20 on the year with no fewer than four players reaching double-digit goal tallies - led by 16 apiece from Roar Anderson and Luis Felipe Magalhaes. The Dons 1980 NCAA Championship team will be honored during halftime of USF’s showdown against ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Friday, October 22 at Negoesco Stadium as part of the USF Fall Fest Weekend. IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK: San Francisco improved to 9-0-1 after steamrolling Saint Mary’s 6-0. The Dons suffered their first deadlock of the season in a neutral site contest against crosstown rival San Francisco State in a 4-4 tie. USF played the game in Marin and just made their flight out of SFO to St. Louis. NEW PITCH FOR NEGOESCO STADIUM: San Francisco soccer will play on a newly installed ProTurf surface during the 2010 season.
