GAME NOTES THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: USF opens play in the 2010 Bay Area Soccer Classic Thursday, September 16 when it welcomes Stanford to the Hilltop. The Dons then take on No. 21 Cal Sunday in Berkeley at Edwards Stadium. San Francisco looks to bounce back after suffering a 2-0 shutout against No. 20 Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday in the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Dons are in a stretch where they will play three matches in eight days. A LOOK AT THE CARDINAL: Stanford is off to a rocky start to the 2010 season and fell to 0-4-0 on the year after suffering a 1-0 shutout loss to Sacramento State Sunday night. The Cardinal entered the season ranked No. 13 but have been outscored 7-3. Stanford took three straight 2-1 losses including overtime setbacks to Vermont and UNLV. PREVIEWING THE GOLDEN BEARS: Cal enters the weekend with a 2-1-1 record and split last weekend in the Cal Legacy Classic, suffering a 2-1 overtime loss to Saint Mary’s on Friday before bouncing back to pound UNLV 3-0 on Sunday. The Golden Bears opened the season with a 2-1 double overtime triumph against No. 21 Indiana and a scoreless draw against Notre Dame in the adidas/ IU Credit Union Classic. Cal enters the week ranked No. 21 nationally and opens play in the Bay Area Soccer Classic Thursday night against Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium. USF IN SEASON OPENERS: Since 2000, USF owns a 7-4-0 overall record in season openers after posting an impressive 1-0 victory against No. 9 Northwestern in its 2010 debut. USF opened 2009 in impressive fashion with a 4-1 dismantling of UMKC under the\ lights at Negoesco. Before breaking through against the Kangaroos, the Dons had dropped back-to-back openers - 1-0 losses on the road at No. 20 Northwestern in 2008 and at home to Vermont to start 2007. BRYAN BURKE NAMED TO 2010 WCC PRESEASON TEAM: Senior forward Bryan Burke was named to the 2010 West Coast Conference Preseason Team for the second consecutive season. Burke led the team in assists last season with seven, good for fourth place among WCC leaders and was second on the Dons in points with 11. A two-time All-WCC Second Team selection, Burke is the top returning scorer for USF this season and assisted on the game-winning goal against No. 9 Northwestern (9/3/10). UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: After competing in the 2010 Bay Area Soccer Classic, the Dons close out the non-conference schedule Friday, September 24 against Cal State Northridge at Negoesco Stadium before taking to the road for a Sunday showdown against San Jose State Sunday at Spartan Stadium.
