ON TAP: The Dons will open a long span of road games Tuesday as they travel to San Jose State to take on the Spartans at 7 p.m. The game marks the first of eight consecutive road contests, including four in six days.

LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR: Last weekend, the Dons went 2-0 in the opening weekend of play at War Memorial Gym. Thursday, USF posted a 71-63 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton in their 2009-10 home debut. Sunday against Utah State, San Francisco came back from an eight point halftime deficit to hold the Aggies to just 16 points in the second half and earn the 57-48 victory.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: San Francisco will leave Thursday to travel to Lubbock, Texas for the 2009 Basketball Travelers Tip-off Tournament. While in Lubbock, USF will face Texas Tech, Prairie View A&M and Texas-Arlington. The Dons will play three games in three days, starting Friday at 6 p.m. PST when they tip-off with the host, Red Raiders. TAYLOR BLOSSOMS OVER WEEKEND: Junior Donnisha Taylor enjoyed a career weekend against CS Fullerton and Utah State, setting career-highs in eight categories. For the weekend, Taylor averaged 17.5 points and 13.0 rebounds, earning her first career double-doubles in back-to-back games. Against the Titans, the native of Oakland set career highs in points (23), assists (6), field goals made (9), field goals attempted (17), free throws made (5) and free throws attempted (7). Her 23 points more than doubled her previous career high of 10. The forward’s strong play continued Sunday against Utah State, posting a career high with two blocks, while tying a previous career high of 14 rebounds.

KHLOK PROVIDES YOUNG DEPTH OFF THE BENCH: Freshman Mel Khlok has provided the Dons to depth off the bench this season, averaging 8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds. Khlok, one of the first off the bench for San Francisco, scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds while dishing out two assists and a steal in 23 minutes. In 18 minutes against Cal State Fullerton, the Sacramento native added five points, all from the charity stripe, while pulling down four boards in 18 minutes. Sunday, Khlok earned a teamhigh dozen points with five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 20 minutes. She went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to help the Dons seal the victory.

ALE CLUTCH AT THE CHARITY STRIPE: To date, as the team the USF shooters are 52-for-73 (.712) from the free throw line this season. Sophomore Rheina Ale has stepped the stripe eight times this season and is a perfect 8-for-8 in her free throw attempts, including going 6-for-6 against Utah State Sunday. With the Dons up by just two with 1:40 remaining against the Aggies, Ale took the pressure and dissolved it, hitting two free throws to put the Green and Gold up by four. Within the final 40 seconds of the game, the native of Carson sealed the victory for San Francisco hitting four free baskets down the stretch to put the victory out of reach for Utah State. Last season, as a rookie, Ale led the Dons with a .796 average at the stripe, going 74-for-93.

TOUGH ROAD AHEAD: Tuesday marks the first of eight straight home contests for the Dons. During the span, USF will play four games in six days, as well as six games in eight days, spanning three time zones. Following the contest in San Jose, San Francisco will travel to Texas before returning to the Bay for a day before taking off to the islands for the Hukilau Tournament and a single game against Hawaii in Oahu. USF will return to the Bay Area for a single game at Pacific before finally returning to the Hilltop December 13.

DONS’ VIKING VOYAGE: San Francisco took its game overseas in May, embarking on an 11-day, five game tour of Scandinavia. During the trip, the Dons visited Stockholm, Sweden, Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark, facing off against some of the top’s women’s basketball programs in the region.

USF finished the trip with a 3-2 record, including a victory against the top team in Norway and two victories against the Danish National Team.

2009-10 USF Women’s Basketball Game #3 - UTah State

Game #4 - San Jose state SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE: San Jose State enters Tuesday’s game looking for its first win of the 2009-10 season, as the Spartans face the Dons with a 0-3 mark.

San Jose State is led by Chasity Shavers, who averages 17.0 points, 3.7 rebounds a game. Samantha Marez also averages double-digits with 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds. San Jose State is coached by Pam DeCosta, who in two years down south has a 5-56 mark.

(San Francisco) - USF women’s basketball rebounded from an eight point halftime deficit to earn a 57-48 victory Sunday over visiting Utah State at War Memorial Gym. Junior Donnisha Taylor continued a strong start to the season, earning her second consecutive double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds.

Thanks to the victory the Dons improve to 2-1, while the loss was the first of the season for the Aggies, who fall to 2-1. San Francisco’s record marks the first time since the 2004-05 season that the Dons have opened the season with a 2-1 mark.

SERIES RECORD/STREAK: San Jose State owns a 21-14 advantage in the all-time series record, including a 12-4 edge when playing in San Jose. San Francisco has won the past two meetings between the schools.

Taylor recorded her second career double-double in as many games Sunday, after posting a career night Friday against Cal State Fullerton. After posting a career high in points Friday, the native of Oakland tied a career high with 14 rebounds Sunday. She pulled down 11 defensive rebounds and three offensive. In addition, against the Aggies, Taylor posted a career-high two blocks. The forward also added two assists and a steal to combine with her team-high 12 points.

LAST MEETING: Senior Dominique Carter scored a career-high 32 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished five assists in a Dons’ 74-51 victory over San Jose State. With her performance, Carter overtook both Carey Sauer (1999-04) and Sue Corder (1981-85) on the USF career scoring list and now stands fourth with 1,475.

San Francisco struggled in the opening half, shooting 32 percent from the field, while Utah State posted a 51.9 percentage, going 14-for-27, including hitting 4-of-5 from 3-point range. The Aggies went up by 11 in the half at the 5:19 mark with long range shot from Alice Coddington but the Dons chipped away at the deficit to come within five late in the half. Coddington struck again at the buzzer, giving Utah State a 32-24 advantage at the intermission.

The Dons came out hot in the second half, not allowing the Aggies to score in the opening eight minutes. San Francisco continued its strong defense in the half, only allowing only 16 points in the frame. The Dons allowed just six points in the paint, while capitalizing on Aggie turnovers to add 12 points. Utah State shot just 17.2 percent from the field in the second half, while going 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. In contrast, San Francisco shot 43.5 percent, going 10-for-23, while also hitting 11-of-12 free throws.

The final USF six points of the game came at the free throw line as Rheina Ale and Taylor went a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe down the stretch.

Freshman Mel Khlok added a dozen points for the Dons to match Taylor for the teamhigh. The guard missed one shot on the afternoon, going 2-for-3, 2-for-2 from 3-point range and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The native of Sacramento added two assists, two blocks and steal in her 20 minutes as a reserve.

Vania Singleterry scored 10 points for the Dons to mark a season-high for the sophomore. Ale finished the afternoon a point shy of double-digits with nine points and seven rebounds. All nine of the guard’s points came in the second half, with six of them from the charity stripe.

Utah State was paced by Lydia Whitehead with 16 points, 12 rebounds. Alice Coddington also added a dozen points while pulling down six boards.
