HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstanding prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Conference. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of five highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the final homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and final overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and finish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. Game No. 28 Recap - Pepperdine DONS RALLY TO SPLASH WAVES 79-78 IN OT: USF trailed big early, trailed by 13 in the second half, but roared all the way back for a 79-78 overtime triumph against Pepperdine Thursday night in West Coast Conference action at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (15-13, 9-4 WCC) improve to 11-3 at home and earn a season series split against the Waves (11-19, 5-8 WCC). Sophomore center Perris Blackwell missed both games of last week’s Pacific Northwest road trip and posted a 13-point, 15-rebound double-double. It was the team-leading eighth doubledouble of the year for Blackwell and the fifth during WCC play. Junior guard Rashad Green scored 14 points and went 10-for-11 at the free throw line, including a pair with 1.6 seconds on the clock to give the Dons the one-point victory. After scoring just two points in the opening period, sophomore guard Michael Williams finished with 13 points and made a big 3-pointer in the closing minute of overtime. Freshman guard Cody Doolin chipped in 10 points with five rebounds and three assists. USF trailed 17-5 nine minutes into the game and were down 13, 39-26 at halftime. The Dons climbed back into the game using a 26-12 burst to start the second half and took their first lead on a Williams’ jumper with 8:50 remaining in regulation. After three lead changes, USF took a 68-65 lead with 30 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Doolin. Pepperdine’s Mychel Thompson forced overtime with a 3-pointer to deadlock it at 68-68. Once in overtime USF took a four point lead, 72-68 on a Blackwell lay-up, but back-to-back buckets by Thompson tied it at 72-all. Thompson gave the Waves their final lead at 78-77 with 10 seconds remaining before Green was fouled on his subsequent drive, setting the stage for his game-winning charity tosses. USF improves to 9-1 under Walters in overtime, including an unblemished 4-0 this season. QUOTING WALTERS: ““We didn’t play well, but we battled and found a way get a ‘W’ against what I think is a really talented and together Pepperdine team. It’s a good win for us. It’s not a good performance, but we’ll take it.” WAVES SURF & TURF: The two teams combined for 102 rebounds (53 for Pepperdine) The Waves fired a whopping 83 shots USF’s nine WCC wins matches win tallies from 1997 & 2003

NEWCOMER NOTES Two new additions are from Europe - Marko Petrovic (Croatia) and Justin Raffington (Germany) Marko Petrovic is the nephew of Naismisth Hall-ofFamer Drazen Petrovic Cole Dickerson’s half-brother Michael, helped Arizona to a NCAA Championship and played in the NBA Avery Johnson is the third guard on the team from Southern California
CODY DOOLIN ON POINT FOR THE DONS: Freshman guard Cody Doolin continues to impress in the USF backcourt. Doolin has started every game for the Green and Gold this season, and ranks third on the team in minutes (31.8). The Texan scored a career-high 23 points, including the game-winning 3-point play against Gonzaga (1/22/11). This season, Doolin averages 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
CARDIAC KIDS: USF can never be accused of being boring or even necessarily doing things the easy way. Off to their best West Coast Conference start (9-4) since 1982, the Dons have trailed at halftime of a whopping 10 of their 13 league games. USF has held just three intermission leads during league play - a 31-28 lead against Portland (1/20/11), a 31-17 advantage against San Diego (2/10/11) and a 35-30 edge at Portland (2/17/11). The Dons overcame an 11 point, 35-24 halftime deficit at Santa Clara (1/8/11) and roared back from a 13-point, 39-26 shortfall against Pepperdine (2/24/11). MORE JAYHAWKS ON THE BENCH: USF head coach Rex Walters elevated Justin Bauman to assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and also added former Kansas team captain Michael Lee to the bench. Bauman spent his first two seasons at USF as the Director of Basketball Operations. Both Bauman and Lee were inducted into the Kansas Jayhawks Athletic Hall of Fame for their connection with the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Coach Bauman served as the head student assistant for the Jayhawks in 2003-04 under Bill Self, while Coach Lee served as a James Naismith team captain during his junior campaign. DONS BASKETBALL BLOGGING: USF will be blogging during home games throughout the 2010-11 season using Cover It Live. Fans can access the in-game blog via the official Facebook page of USF Athletics here: http://on.fb.me/USFDonsFB. Click to become a fan today of the official USF Facebook page and Go Dons! A RETURN TO THE 90S: USF’s run and gun offense was showcased in its 97-76 win against Seattle U. (11/12/10) in the 2010-11 season opener. The Dons posted its first 90-plus point night against a Division I opponent since a 93-63 win against Sacramento State (11/17/07). The Dons set a program record with a 129-64 win against Holy Names (1/2/10) and also posted a 92-66 win vs. Dominican (11/16/09).

USF DONS SIGN MARK TOLLEFSEN FOR 2011-12 CAMPAIGN The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team is proud to announce the signing of 6-foot-9 forward Mark Tollefsen from Danville, Calif. Tollefsen, a senior at San Ramon Valley in Danville, signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) today on the first day of the early signing period. After signing seven players last year, USF will sign just one player this season. “Once Mark makes the transition to the collegiate game, you will see a young man that understands how to play the game offensively,” USF head coach Rex Walters said. “He will guard multiple positions and will be used a lot of different ways. We are very excited to get a young man that comes from a great program and great parents.” The Bay Area product played a key role in San Ramon Valley’s 28-4 season last year. The Wolves shared the East Bay Athletic League title with De La Salle and played its way to the CIF Division I Northern California semi-finals where it lost by three points to De La Salle. Tollefsen averaged 9.2 points and 7.3 rebounds last season for the Wolves shooting 54 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the arc. He also averaged 5.4 offensive rebounds a game. “Mark is a long/lean athletic hybrid forward,” Walters said. “He’s a very skilled passer, that can handle the ball, shoot with range and can play three to four positions on the court.” Tollefsen played for the Lakeshow 17 AAU team this past summer, with his team winning the San Francisco City Tournament championship. USF REMEMBERS QUINTIN DAILEY Former University of San Francisco All-American Quintin Dailey passed away November 8, 2010. Dailey was 49. Most recently, Dailey has devoted his time working with at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area as a supervisor at the Parkdale Community Center. A prep standout at Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore, Dailey made an immediate impact at USF for head coach Dan Belluomini, averaging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and helping the Dons to a 22-7 record. One of the most prolific offensive threats in USF and West Coast Conference history, Dailey departed campus after three seasons ranked No. 2 in career scoring at 1,841 points (20.5) and No. 13 on the WCC scoring list. Dailey owns the Bay Area Division I single-season scoring record with 755 points (25.2), done as a senior.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE NEWS WCC UNVEILS COMCAST/COX TELEVISION PACKAGE; TEN DONS WCC CONTESTS TO BE TELEVISED LIVE November 29, 2010 (San Bruno, CA) - The West Coast Conference has announced its television schedule for the 2011 West Coast Conference men’s basketball season. In all, 44 of 56 regular season WCC games will be televised on a national, regional, or local level. “We’re thrilled to be able to showcase WCC basketball to such a large audience during the conference season,” West Coast Conference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. “This is an exciting time to be a part of the West Coast Conference. Not only are we coming off one of the best years in conference history, we once again have one of the top television agreements in the country thanks to our partnerships with Comcast, Cox, ESPN and Fox.” Once again, the West Coast Conference has worked with partners Comcast and Channel 4 San Diego to create a regional syndication package for a number of WCC games. Most games will be broadcast live in the markets of both participating teams, including five of the top 55 markets in the nation: the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and San Diego. The Comcast games will air regionally on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Comcast SportsNet California, and Comcast SportsNet Northwest. In all, the combination of regional sports networks, KHQ-TV in Spokane, and Channel 4 San Diego will televise 31 West Coast Conference games in 2011. Additionally, the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU) will televise 13 WCC
games to a national audience. The regional telecasts kick off Saturday, January 8 when USF visits Santa Clara in a game televised on CSN California. That same night, Portland visits Gonzaga (FSN Northwest), and Saint Mary’s travels to Pepperdine (Prime Ticket). Last season, four West Coast Conference teams appeared in postseason play for just the second time in league history. Saint Mary’s advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after winning the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Championship; Gonzaga won its 10th straight regular season WCC title; and both Portland and Loyola Marymount participated in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. 2010 ZAPPOS.COM WCC TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS: The West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament returns to the bright lights of Las Vegas and the Orleans Arena in 2011 as 16 teams battle for two chances to “Advance to the Dance”. “We’re excited to be returning to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas this March,” said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. “We felt the event was a complete success in all facets, from the quality of the games played, to the hotel and arena facilities, and the overall positive experience had by our student-athletes, league membership, and fans. In addition, we are thrilled to be offering fantastic prices on both tickets and hotel accommodations. We feel that the WCC Basketball Championships should be a celebration of the Conference and we want to make the event as accessible to as many people as possible.” ABOUT THE ORLEANS ARENA: Since opening its doors in 2003, the Orleans Arena has proven to be Las Vegas’ favorite

SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 9 WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT
“THE HOUSE THAT RUSSELL BUILT” TRANSFORMED
During the Summer of 2009, USF Athletics honored a remarkable past and prepared for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memorial Gym. Among a number of improvements was the first floor replacement done since the arena opened in 195859. Along with the new hardwood flooring, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from floor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed. Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entrances with to the arena, new retired jerseys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference championship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs. Prior to the 2010-11 season, new lights were added to the facility to further enhance the fan experience.
