SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 2
HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstanding prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Conference. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of five highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the final homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and final overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and finish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. Game No. 21 Recap - Loyola Marymount
DONS DISPATCH LIONS 61-60: San Francisco roared back from a 17-point second half deficit to stun Loyola Marymount 61-60 in West Coast Conference men’s basketball action Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion. The Dons (11-10, 5-1 WCC) record their fourth straight league win and beat the Lions (8-11, 1-4 WCC) for the third time in four tries while continuing the program’s best start to conference play since 1982. Junior guard Rashad Green carried USF with a monster effort, posting his third career double-double with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. In addition to accounting for a third of the team’s offense, Green dished three assists with no turnovers in 33 minutes and made the key defensive play in the final seconds to secure the win. Senior center Moustapha Diarra also enjoyed a strong night with 15 points and four rebounds off the bench in 18 minutes. Sophomore guard Michael Williams scored nine points as the Dons battled cold shooting, in particular from the perimeter. USF shot a dismal .278 (10-36) from the floor in the first half, but heated up in the second, connecting at a .484 (15-31) rate. The Dons missed its first 12 3-pointers, finishing at a chilly .182 (4-22). San Francisco led just once in the first half – at 2-0 – and the Lions capitalized on dismal Dons shooting to take a 30-22 lead into the intermission. LMU continued to pile it on to start the second half and led by 17, 41-24 with 17:32 remaining in regulation. USF clawed back, using a 28-7 run to take its first lead since the opening minute at 50-48 on a spinning lay-up by Diarra with 8:00 remaining. Both teams stalled offensively and the Lions built a 60-58 edge with 90 seconds on the clock. Williams connected on a deep 3-pointer for the final margin. QUOTING WALTERS: “We did not play well at times, but we found a way to get it done. When we trailed big in the second half I just told the guys to play defense, make stops and the rest will come. They showed a lot of toughness and stayed the course and made plays. After the game, I told our guys, ‘Let’s enjoy this until midnight, but then let’s focus on Pepperdine’.” LION BITES: u San Francisco moves to 5-1 in West Coast Conference play, the best start for the Green and Gold since the 1982 campaign u USF matches its road win tally of 2009-10 (3) u USF has won seven of its last eight games u The Dons have trailed at halftime in five of six WCC games

According to a survey conducted by the University of Kentucky of all Division I programs, the Dons are tied for the seventh least experienced roster in basketball. Seven schools reported eight years of Division I experience. Overall, 22 schools reported less than 10 years of experience. MORE WILDCATS ON THE BENCH: USF head coach Rex Walters elevated Justin Bauman to assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and also added former Kansas team captain Michael Lee to the bench. Bauman spent his first two seasons at USF as the Director of Basketball Operations. USF DONS SIGN MARK TOLLEFSEN FOR 2011-12 CAMPAIGN The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team is proud to announce the signing of 6-foot-9 forward Mark Tollefsen from Danville, Calif. Tollefsen, a senior at San Ramon Valley in Danville, signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) today on the first day of the early signing period. After signing seven players last year, USF will sign just one player this season. “Once Mark makes the transition to the collegiate game, you will see a young man that understands how to play the game offensively,” USF head coach Rex Walters said. “He will guard multiple positions and will be used a lot of different ways. We are very excited to get a young man that comes from a great program and great parents.” The Bay Area product played a key role in San Ramon Valley’s 28-4 season last year. The Wolves shared the East Bay Athletic League title with De La Salle and played its way to the CIF Division I Northern California semi-finals where it lost by three points to De La Salle. Tollefsen averaged 9.2 points and 7.3 rebounds last season for the Wolves shooting 54 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the arc. He also averaged 5.4 offensive rebounds a game. “Mark is a long/lean athletic hybrid forward,” Walters said. “He’s a very skilled passer, that can handle the ball, shoot with range and can play three to four positions on the court.” Tollefsen played for the Lakeshow 17 AAU team this past summer, with his team winning the San Francisco City Tournament championship. USF REMEMBERS QUINTIN DAILEY Former University of San Francisco All-American Quintin Dailey passed away November 8, 2010. Dailey was 49. Most recently, Dailey has devoted his time working with at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area as a supervisor at the Parkdale Community Center. A prep standout at Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore, Dailey made an immediate impact at USF for head coach Dan Belluomini, averaging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and helping the Dons to a 22-7 record. One of the most prolific offensive threats in USF and West Coast Conference history, Dailey departed campus after three seasons ranked No. 2 in career scoring at 1,841 points (20.5) and No. 13 on the WCC scoring list. Dailey owns the Bay Area Division I single-season scoring record with 755 points (25.2), done as a senior.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE NEWS WCC UNVEILS COMCAST/COX TELEVISION PACKAGE; TEN DONS WCC CONTESTS TO BE TELEVISED LIVE November 29, 2010 (San Bruno, CA) - The West Coast Conference has announced its television schedule for the 2011 West Coast Conference men’s basketball season. In all, 44 of 56 regular season WCC games will be televised on a national, regional, or local level. “We’re thrilled to be able to showcase WCC basketball to such a large audience during the conference season,” West Coast Conference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. “This is an exciting time to be a part of the West Coast Conference. Not only are we coming off one of the best years in conference history, we once again have one of the top television agreements in the country thanks to our partnerships with Comcast, Cox, ESPN and Fox.” Once again, the West Coast Conference has worked with partners Comcast and Channel 4 San Diego to create a regional syndication package for a number of WCC games. Most games will be broadcast live in the markets of both participating teams, including five of the top 55 markets in the nation: the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and San Diego. The Comcast games will air regionally on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Comcast SportsNet California, and Comcast SportsNet Northwest. In all, the combination of regional sports networks, KHQ-TV in Spokane, and Channel 4 San Diego will televise 31 West Coast Conference games in 2011. Additionally, the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU) will televise 13 WCC
games to a national audience. The regional telecasts kick off Saturday, January 8 when USF visits Santa Clara in a game televised on CSN California. That same night, Portland visits Gonzaga (FSN Northwest), and Saint Mary’s travels to Pepperdine (Prime Ticket). Last season, four West Coast Conference teams appeared in postseason play for just the second time in league history. Saint Mary’s advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after winning the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Championship; Gonzaga won its 10th straight regular season WCC title; and both Portland and Loyola Marymount participated in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. 2010 ZAPPOS.COM WCC TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS: The West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament returns to the bright lights of Las Vegas and the Orleans Arena in 2011 as 16 teams battle for two chances to “Advance to the Dance”. “We’re excited to be returning to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas this March,” said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. “We felt the event was a complete success in all facets, from the quality of the games played, to the hotel and arena facilities, and the overall positive experience had by our student-athletes, league membership, and fans. In addition, we are thrilled to be offering fantastic prices on both tickets and hotel accommodations. We feel that the WCC Basketball Championships should be a celebration of the Conference and we want to make the event as accessible to as many people as possible.” ABOUT THE ORLEANS ARENA: Since opening its doors in 2003, the Orleans Arena has proven to be Las Vegas’ favorite

“THE HOUSE THAT RUSSELL BUILT” TRANSFORMED
WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT During the Summer of 2009, USF Athletics honored a remarkable past and prepared for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memorial Gym. Among a number of improvements was the first floor replacement done since the arena opened in 195859. Along with the new hardwood flooring, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from floor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed. Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entrances with to the arena, new retired jerseys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference championship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs. Prior to the 2010-11 season, new lights were added to the facility to further enhance the fan experience.
