LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR: Thursday, Rheina Ale scored a career-high 25 points, 24 in the second half, as the Dons surged in the second half to earn a 71-67 victory over Pacific in Stockton to wrap-up their eight-game road streak. NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: USF will break for finals next week, before traveling to Kennewick, Washington Saturday December 19 to face Washington State. VOTE FOR VAL: This season the West Coast Conference is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Women’s Athletics, powered by Zappos.com, with a 25th Anniversary Team. The first 24 members were voted upon by members of the conference, while the 25th member is being left up to the general public. USF’s delegate is former Don standout Valerie Gillon. Gillon, a member of the USF Hall of Fame, was a two-time WCC Tournament MVP (1995, 1996), the 1996 WCC Scholar Athlete of the Year and ranks in the USF Career ranks in six categories. Please join the USF Women’s Basketball Program by voting for Valerie by visiting www.wccsports.com. ALE ERUPTS IN THE SECOND HALF, FALLS SHORT OF RECORD: Rheina Ale erupted in the second half of the contest at Pacific, scoring 24 points in the final 20 minutes. Ale posted just one point in the first half, after only playing three minutes due to two early fouls. The 24 second half points is one point shy of the school record for points in the second half, set by Dominique Carter in 2008. Ale was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including five 3-pointers, to mark the second time in her career the native of Carson has been perfect from the field in her career. KHLOK PROVIDES STRONG DEPTH OFF THE BENCH: Freshman Mel Khlok has been a threat off the bench for the Dons this season, including recording her first career double-double Thursday at Pacific. When playing as a reserve, Khlok averages 6.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per outing. Twice this season, against Utah State and at Pacific, the native of Sacramento has scored a dozen points as a reserve. For the season, the guard averages 6.5 points, 4.2 rebounds in 18.4 minutes of action per tilt. ANTON EARNS CAREER HIGH: Heidi Anton came off the bench against BYU to post a career high 11 points Friday. In nine minutes of action, Anton hit 4-of-5 from the field with three free throws, including scoring five straight for the Dons. She also added an assist and a steal. Prior to her 11 points, Anton’s previous high was five points. ALE’S STREAK BROKEN AT 24: Heading into the trip to Hawai’i, Rheina Ale was a perfect 22-for22 from the free throw line this season and a perfect 36-for-36 dating back to last season. Her missed free throw attempt with 13 seconds remaining against Hawai’i snapped the sophomore’s streak. Currently, Ale leads the WCC and ranks 11th in the NCAA with a .926 (25-for-27) clip from the charity stripe. Earlier this season, Ale’s clutch shooting played a major role in a couple wins. With the Dons up by just two with 1:40 remaining against the Utah State, Ale took the pressure and dissolved it, hitting two free throws to put the Green and Gold up by four. Within the final 40 seconds of the game, the native of Carson sealed the victory for San Francisco hitting four free baskets down the stretch to put the victory out of reach for the Aggies. Last season, as a rookie, Ale led the Dons with a .796 average at the stripe, going 74-for-93. TOUGH ROAD TAKEN: Thursday’s game marked the finale of eight straight road contests for the Dons. During the span, USF played four games in six days, as well as six games in eight days, spanning three time zones. The span started November 24 in San Jose and continued to Texas before returning to the Bay for a day before taking off to the islands for the Hukilau Tournament and a single game against Hawaii in Oahu. During the span, USF went 2-6. WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT During the Summer, USF Athletics honors a remarkable past and prepares for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memorial Gym. Among a number of improvements was the first floor replacement done since the arena opened in 1958-59. Along with the new hardwood flooring, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from floor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed. Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entrances with to the arena, new retired jerseys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference championship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs. The south lobby of the gym underwent construction as well to create a more permanent concessions area.
