THE LEGACY LEGENDS OF THE HILLTOP
BOB ST. CLAIR Throughout its storied 150 year history, the University of San Francisco reflects the dynamic, diverse and vibrant of the city of San Francisco. One must look no further than Kezar Stadium, the home cross country and track training facility, to witness another example how city and university intersect. NFL and USF Hall-of-Famer, Bob St. Clair had the field at Kezar Stadium named in his honor in a special ceremony January 19, 2001. St. Clair starred on the gridiron as a member of the Dons’ storied 1951 football team and would later add to those exploits as a five-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time NFL All-Pro with the San Francisco 49ers. Another “Legend of the Hilltop” woven into the rich fabric of the “City by the Bay”.

CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD
THE LEGACY USF HISTORY When USF men’s track competed in its first meet of 2007, it marked the first time the Dons were represented as a team since 1956. With the help of 1959 graduate and USF track enthusiast Edward M. Griffen, men’s track records from the 1932-36, 1951-54, and 1956 seasons were compiled. The results are not only competitive but also line up with some of the best marks in the world during those years, as well as match up with some of the NCAA records that are held at the present time. Many institutions enjoy a golden age of athletics, but few were brighter than experienced by USF from 1948-1958. During this 10-year span, the Dons captured no fewer than six national championships - men’s basketball (1949, NIT; 1955-56 NCAA), men’s soccer (1949 College Bowl); and men’s tennis (singles 1948, team 1949). In addition the Dons fielded one of college football’s most legendary teams the fabled 1951 Unbeaten, Untied and Uninvited squad. USF also enjoyed success on the track due in no small part to exceptional athletes representing the Dons on the court and on the gridiron. Basketball Hall of Famer and living legend William “Bill” Russell is known throughout the community as the greatest basketball player that ever suited up for the Dons. However, it is rarely mentioned that Russell was also a track star for the Dons during the same years he participated in basketball for USF. His school record of 6’9 ¼” in the high jump is still number one at USF today and remembered as being ranked number seven in the world that year. In 1952, four years before Russell brought attention to the USF track team, Olympic medalist and USF athlete Ollie Matson set a then World Record in the 200m sprint with a time of 20.5. Unfortunately, that time was registered as “unofficial” due to timers missing the smoke from the starter’s pistol. Matson’s time of 20.5 falls just shy of the NCAA record held by Olympic Gold Medalist Justin Gatlin, who ran the 200m a fraction of a second faster (19.86) 50 years after Matson in 2002. USF Sports Publicist and future NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle took Matson throughout the country to compete in all-comers meets. Matson, who was also regarded as one of the best sprinters in the world in the 1950’s, has the privilege of sharing the USF record in the 100y dash with former Don Ralph Montague. In 1932, Montague sprinted to the finish line in an astonishing 9.6 seconds, just missing a claim to the World Record of 9.4 seconds. Twenty years later, an ambitious Matson would tie Montague three times but would never be able to surpass the record. Although these names may be more famous in other sports, these men were some of the best track athletes in the world during the years they competed for the University of San Francisco. Now that track is officially back on the Hilltop, current and future Don runners and throwers will have the opportunity to take on the challenge of surpassing school records.
Once again, USF has the opportunity to put Dons track and field at the top of the collegiate ranks.
