San Francisco roster boasts just six upperclassmen GAME NOTES
NEXT WEEK: San Francisco will spilt next weekend between the road and the friendly confines of the Hilltop. The Dons will play in their first road match of the season, as they travel south to Fresno, Aug. 26, for a 7 p.m. tilt with Fresno State. USF will return to The City to host George Washington, Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. USF RETURNS 15 from 2011: San Francisco returns 15 letter-winners from last season’s campaign, including five starters and one All-West Coast Conference honoree. Returning from the 2010 starting line for the Dons will be Christina Moberg, Molly Hall, Heather Haney, Joan Piasta, and Tyler Campagna. Moberg was an All-WCC honorable mention selection last year, while also earning AllFreshman accolades. DONS WELCOME A LARGE INCOMING CLASS: The Dons welcome a talented incoming class to campus this fall. The class includes 10 freshmen and one transfer. USF welcomes Lauren AbuAli (Las Vegas, Nev.), Halle Bissin (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Liana Coppola (Santa Fe, N.M.), Gabby Guaiumi (San Francisco), Mackenszie Krieser (Medford, Ore.), Jaciara Mello (Nerbury Park, Calif.), Emily Murzinski (Las Vegas, Nev.), Celia Pellegrini (Austin, Texas), Abigail Phillips (North Vancouver, BC), Tori Uhl (North Vancouver, BC) and Ali Yule (Davis, Calif.). The lone transfer of the group is Guaiumi, a native of The City, who transfers to the HIlltop from UW-Milwaukee. Guaiumi enters 2011 as a sophomore. ZABALA NAMED TO CAL ATHLETICS: Maite Zabala returns to the HIlltop for her fifth season as an assistant this year, only with a new accolade and a new title. Over the summer, Zabala was named as one of the newest members of the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame. The former goalkeeper for the Bears will be enshrined into the Hall this fall. A two-time first-team All-Pac-10 performer, Zabala was an outstanding goalkeeper for the Bears from 1997-2000. She helped Cal to three NCAA Tournaments, including a school-record 17 wins in 2000, and finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in shutouts (26.5) and saves (277). BYU JOINS THE WCC: The West Coast Conference will have a new look this season, as Brigham Young joins the league for its inaugural season. Thursday, October 27, USF will host then newest member of the league, BYU, under the lights at 7 p.m. The nationally-ranked Cougars earned a postseason bid last year after claiming the Mountain West Championship title. CHANGES IN THE WOMEN’S SOCCER STAFF: As head coach Mark Carr enters his fifth year on the Hilltop, his staff will have a new look. During the offseason, Carr promoted Maite Zabala to Associate Head Coach, while naming a new Assistant Coach, Katie Burton. An experienced assistant and a former college standout at Sacramento State, Burton spent last season as an assistant coach at UNLV.
