EUROPEAN FLAVOR: The Dons have four European players on the roster this season. After redshirting her first year, Rebecca Kopilovitch, who hails from Israel, is ready to play her first collegiate match. Joining Kopilovitch are Valentina Zaloznik (Slovenia), Vendula Strakova (Czech Republic) and Anja Segota (Croatia). USF head coach Gilad Doron is also European, having grown up in Israel before moving to the United States in 1996. All four players have played for either their country’s senior or junior national team programs. TRIPLE THREAT: Joan Caloiaro was the first player in nine seasons to post a triple-double for the Dons — and she did it three times during the 2010 season. Her first collegiate triple-double came against then-No. 10 California with 30 assists, 14 kills and 13 digs. She turned in 34 assists, 11 kills and 10 digs at Portland and 38 assists, 16 kills and 10 digs against Portland. TAKE YOUR TURN: In the Dons’ 27 matches last season, six different USF players led the team in kills and seven players paced the team in blocks. Four players took their turns leading in digs and three players paved the way in assists. Setter/hitter Joan Caloiaro led the team in kills, assists, digs and blocks. Middle blocker Hadley Simmons led in kills and blocks and outside hitter Alycia Cox led in digs, kills and blocks. HABIT FORMING: During the 2010 season, setter/hitter Joan Caloiaro totaled 14 double-doubles as a freshman. The Saratoga, Calif. reached double figures in assists in all but one of the Dons’ 27 matches in addition to totaling 13 double-digit digs games and seven double-digit kills games. SEASONED UPPERCLASSMEN: With no seniors on the team, USF looks to juniors Alycia Cox and Leanna Ludes for upperclassmen leadership this season. Cox, an outside hitter, has competed in all 54 matches the Green and Gold have played the past two years, while Ludes, a setter, has seen action in 51 of those matches. GAMES TO CIRCLE: Seven teams on the Dons’ 2011 schedule are either in the preseason top 25 AVCA poll or are receiving votes: Hawaii, San Diego, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, Arizona, Wichita State and Cal Poly. The Dons are set to play three of those teams twice giving them 10 games against teams garnering national attention.
