USF squares off against Arizona at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 and Wichita State at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. LOOKING AHEAD: The Dons return to the comfort of War Memorial Gym to host the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge. LOADED FIELD: San Francisco begins its season in a tournament that features a field of three teams attracting national attention that all played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Host Hawai’i is ranked No. 10 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, while Arizona and Wichita State are both receiving votes EUROPEAN FLAVOR: The Dons have four European players on the roster this season. After redshirting her first year, Rebecca Kopilovitch, who hails from Israel, is ready to play her first collegiate match. Joining Kopilovitch are Valentina Zaloznik (Slovenia), Vendula Strakova (Czech Republic) and Anja Segota (Croatia). USF head coach Gilad Doron is also European, having grown up in Israel before moving to the United States in 1996. All four players have played for either their country’s senior or junior national team programs. TRIPLE THREAT: Joan Caloiaro was the first player in nine seasons to post a triple-double for the Dons — and she did it three times during the 2010 season. Her first collegiate triple-double came against then-No. 10 California with 30 assists, 14 kills and 13 digs. She turned in 34 assists, 11 kills and 10 digs at Portland and 38 assists, 16 kills and 10 digs against Portland. RECORD BOOK ENTRY: Libero Whitney Swain’s 379 digs during the 2010 season was the 10th best single-season digs total in program history. The freshman accomplished this feat in only 96 sets while seven of the eight single-season marks in front of her needed 105 or more sets.

LAST TIME VS. HAWAI’I: The Dons last traveled to Hawaii in 2002 where they faced then-No. 6 Hawaii in the Aston Imua Challenge. Hawaii swept San Francisco in three sets 15-30, 20-30 and 16-30. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: Arizona advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 where it lost in the first round to Northwestern. The Wildcats welcome eight new freshmen to the team, including outside hitter Madison Kingdon who was named to the United States Junior National Team. Returning for Arizona are outside hitter Courtney Karst and middle blocker Cursty Jackson, who averaged 2.78 and 2.43 kills per set, respectively. The Wildcats also return libero Candace Nicolson. LAST TIME VS. ARIZONA: USF played at Arizona in 2006 at the Wildcats’ Arizona Wildcat Classic. Then-No. 18 Arizona bested San Francisco 3-1 by scores of 32-30, 30-25, 24-30 and 30-25.

SCOUTING THE SHOCKERS: Wichita State is playing a West Coast Conference team early in the season for a second consecutive year after losing to Portland and beating Loyola Marymount in 2010. The Shockers are returning four starters and their libero. Setter Mary Elizabeth Hooper, who averaged 10.41 assists per set last year, powers Wichita State. The team returns outside hitters Emily Adney, who averaged 3.54 kills per set in 2010, and Camri Zwiester, who notched 3.69 kills and 3.19 digs per set last season. LAST TIME VS. WICHITA STATE: San Francisco beat Wichita State in 2003 at the Washington State Cougar Challenge 3-2. The Dons won by scores of 30-32, 30-28, 30-27, 26-30 and 16-14.

“STUDYING” ABROAD: Four members of the USF volleyball program participated in the European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia this summer. Hitters Malina Terrell and Alycia Cox made the trip along with USF associate head coach Ken Ko and assistant coach Todd Thompson. Ko was the head coach for the team — the NVCA High Performance team. CENTURY MARK: USF coach Gilad Doron returns to the Hilltop for his fifth season after coached his 100th collegiate volleyball win against Seattle University at War Memorial Gym during the 2010 season. His 27 West Coast Conference victories at USF are a school record for most career conference wins. TAKE YOUR TURN: In the Dons’ 27 matches last season, six different USF players led the team in kills and seven players paced the team in blocks. Four players took their turns in leading in digs and three players paved the way in assists. Setter/hitter Joan Caloiaro led the team in kills, assists, digs and blocks. Middle blocker Hadley Simmons led in kills and blocks and outside hitter Alycia Cox led in digs, kills and blocks. SENSATIONAL SOPHS: USF returns its kills, digs, assists and aces leaders — all of whom are sophomores. Outside hitter Malina Terrell averaged 2.82 kills per set during the 2010 season, while setter Joan Caloiaro and libero Whitney turned in 7.08 assists and 3.95 digs per set, respectively. Caloiaro also led the team in service aces with 23. Perhaps the most versatile player on the team is another sophomore — Mackenzie Murtagh — who can line up as setter, hitter or defensive specialist. HOLDING DOWN THE MIDDLE: The Dons return both middle blockers in junior Hadley Simmons and redshirt sophomore Jordan Irish. Simmons paced the team in blocking last season with 0.78 per set, with Irish bringing the height to her blocking game as she stands at 6-foot-3. They will be joining in the middle by 6-foot-4 freshman Valentina Zaloznik.

HABIT FORMING: During the 2010 season, setter/hitter Joan Caloiaro totaled 14 double-doubles as a freshman. The Saratoga, Calif. reached double figures in assists in all but one of the Dons’ 27 matches in addition to totaling 13 double-digit digs games and seven double-digit kills games. SEASONED UPPERCLASSMEN: With no seniors on the team, USF looks to juniors Alycia Cox and Leanna Ludes for upperclassmen leadership this season. Cox, an outside hitter, has competed in all 54 matches the Green and Gold have played the past two years, while Ludes, a setter, has seen action in 51 of those matches. BACK ROW DEPTH: The lack of defensive depth during the 2010 season forced freshman libero Whitney Swain to shoulder most of the burden in the back row. Reinforcements are on the way this year via freshmen Rebecca Kopilovitch and Carly Naramore. GAMES TO CIRCLE: Seven teams on the Dons’ 2011 schedule are either in the preseason top 25 AVCA poll or are receiving votes: Hawaii, San Diego, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, Arizona, Wichita State and Cal Poly. The Dons are set to play three of those teams twice giving them 10 games against teams garnering national attention. CHANGE OF PACE: After playing two years of volleyball in the Pac-10 conference, outside hitter/middle blocker Jocelyn Levig transferred from the University of Oregon to San Francisco. Levig led the Ducks in blocking during the 2010 season with 0.84 blocks per set. RAISING THE ROOF: The 2011 USF roster features four new players that measure 6-foot or taller. USF volleyball now has eight players standing 6-foot or taller.
