LOADED FIELD: San Francisco begins its season in a tournament that features a field of three teams attracting national attention that all played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Host Hawai’i is ranked No. 10 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, while Arizona and Wichita State are both receiving votes EUROPEAN FLAVOR: The Dons have four European players on the roster this season. After redshirting her first year, Rebecca Kopilovitch, who hails from Israel, is ready to play her first collegiate match. Joining Kopilovitch are Valentina Zaloznik (Slovenia), Vendula Strakova (Czech Republic) and Anja Segota (Croatia). USF head coach Gilad Doron is also European, having grown up in Israel before moving to the United States in 1996. All four players have played for either their country’s senior or junior national team programs. TRIPLE THREAT: Joan Caloiaro was the first player in nine seasons to post a triple-double for the Dons — and she did it three times during the 2010 season. Her first collegiate triple-double came against then-No. 10 California with 30 assists, 14 kills and 13 digs. She turned in 34 assists, 11 kills and 10 digs at Portland and 38 assists, 16 kills and 10 digs against Portland. RECORD BOOK ENTRY: Libero Whitney Swain’s 379 digs during the 2010 season was the 10th best single-season digs total in program history. The freshman accomplished this feat in only 96 sets while seven of the eight single-season marks in front of her needed 105 or more sets.
