San Francisco To Play In Cal Invitational

USF in search of first win of season Mackenzie Krieser scores first career goal as Dons fall in double overtime GAME NOTES THIS WEEK: USF will remain in search of its first win of the season as the Dons make the short trip east to Berkeley for two games at the Cal Invitational. San Francisco is set to face Denver in the tournament opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Dons will return to the East Bay to face Kent State at 12:30. NEXT WEEK: The Dons will hit the road next weekend, heading north to face Sacramento State and Nevada. USF will take on Sacramento State Friday, Sept. 9 at 1, before continuing the drive to Reno to face Nevada Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. LAST WEEK: San Francisco went 0-2 last week after struggling in the second half, or later, of both matches. Friday at Fresno State, the Dons dropped a 3-0 decision, after controlling the opening 45 minutes. Sunday, at home against George Washington, USF posted a strong opening half, taking a 1-0 lead, but faltered late, falling 2-1 in double-overtime. KRIESER MAKES IMPACT IMMEDIATELY: Freshman forward Mackenzie Krieser has made an immediate impact for the Dons, despite playing just three matches in the Green and Gold. Krieser leads San Francisco with 10 shots and has scored the Dons’ lone goal of the season. In all three matches to date, the freshman from Medford, Ore. has led the squad in shots taken. USF RETURNS 15 from 2011: San Francisco returns 15 letter-winners from last season’s campaign, including five starters and one All-West Coast Conference honoree. Returning from the 2010 starting line for the Dons will be Christina Moberg, Molly Hall, Heather Haney, Joan Piasta, and Tyler Campagna. Moberg was an All-WCC honorable mention selection last year, while also earning AllFreshman accolades. ZABALA NAMED TO CAL ATHLETICS HOF: Maite Zabala returns to the HIlltop for her fifth season as an assistant this year, only with a new accolade and a new title. Over the summer, Zabala was named as one of the newest members of the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame. The former goalkeeper for the Bears will be enshrined into the Hall this fall. A two-time first-team All-Pac-10 performer, Zabala was an outstanding goalkeeper for the Bears from 1997-2000. She helped Cal to three NCAA Tournaments, including a school-record 17 wins in 2000, and finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in shutouts (26.5) and saves (277). BYU JOINS THE WCC: The West Coast Conference will have a new look this season, as Brigham Young joins the league for its inaugural season. Thursday, October 27, USF will host then newest member of the league, BYU, under the lights at 7 p.m. The nationally-ranked Cougars earned a postseason bid last year after claiming the Mountain West Championship title. CHANGES IN THE WOMEN’S SOCCER STAFF: As head coach Mark Carr enters his fifth year on the Hilltop, his staff will have a new look. During the offseason, Carr promoted Maite Zabala to Associate Head Coach, while naming a new Assistant Coach, Katie Burton. An experienced assistant and a former college standout at Sacramento State, Burton spent last season as an assistant coach at UNLV.
