THIS WEEK: The USF women’s volleyball team opens the 2010 season this weekend at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb. The Dons face tournament host Creighton at 4:30 p.m. (PST) on Friday at D.J. Sokol Arena. On Saturday, USF faces off against Kansas and Lipscomb at 8 a.m. (PST) and 3:3o p.m. (PST), respectively. LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, USF hosts its own tournament: the Powerade/Asics Challenge at War Memorial Gym. The Dons take on UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. on Friday, Tulsa at noon on Saturday and finish up the tournament with a 7 p.m. game against Washington State. Washington State and Tulsa kick off the tournament with a 4:30 p.m. game Friday afternoon. Santa Barbara and Washington State play at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and the 5 p.m. game on Saturday features Tulsa and UC Santa Barbara. 2009 REVIEW: The Dons finished in the top half of the West Coast Conference for the third-straight year underneath the guidance of head coach Gilad Doron. USF celebrated a major milestone, beating Cal State Bakersfield for the program’s 350th win. San Francisco added to the record book by beating WCC foe Pepperdine for the first time on the road in school history. Senior libero and junior outside hitter Sarah Mandala were named first team All-WCC. MANDALA NAMED PRESEASON ALL-WCC: Senior outside hitter Sarah Mandala is no stranger to WCC accolades. Tthis is the second consecutive year she’s been named to the league’s preseason team and she was a first team All-WCC selection as a junior and sophomore. As a freshman she was named honorable mention All-WCC. Mandala was sixth in the nation last year in kills per set with an average of 4.84 and finished with 508 total kills. THE CHASE IS ON: In her final year wearing the green and gold, senior outside hitter Sarah Mandala Is just 250 kills from becoming USF’s all-time kill leader. She is currently fifth on the list with 1,281 kills. Mandala notched 508 kills as a junior, which was the third-best single season in program history and best-ever for a junior. LAST TIME VS. USF: USF won the only previous meeting against Creighton 15-9, 15-8, 15-9 on Sept. 6 in 1996 when the Bluejays traveled to the Hilltop to play in the USF Invitational. This will be the first meeting between head coach Gilad Doron and Kirsten Bernthal Booth.

SCOUTING THE JAYHAWKS: While Kansas does bring back nine letterwinners, it also welcomes 10 newcomers to the team. The Jayhawks return dig leader Melissa Manda (3.35/set), assist leader Nicole Tate (10.,90/set) and kill leaders Allison Mayfield (3.65/set) and Karina Garlington (3.31/set). Kansas is picked to finish 8th in the Big XII this season. LAST TIME VS. USF: Kansas swept San Francisco in the only meeting between the two programs on Sept. 18, 1998. The Jayhawks won by scores of 15-4, 155, 15-9 and were coached then and now by Ray Bechard. It is the first meeting between Bechard and USF coach Gilad Doron.

SCOUTING THE LADY BISON: Lipscomb is coming off a record-breaking season after finished a program-best 28-4 last year, including a berth to the 2009 NCAA Tournament after going undefeated in the Atlantic Sun Conference. It was Lipscomb’s second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history. Two-time Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Alex Kelly, a senior middle blocker, returns along with Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP Stefine Pease, a senior setter. Lipscomb was fifth nationally last season in both assists (13.92) and kills (14.90) per set. LAST TIME VS. USF: This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

TOUGH ROAD AHEAD: San Francisco plays nine matches this season against eight teams that qualified for the 2009 NCAA tournament. Included in that group is Cal, which lost to eventual national champion Penn State in the regional finals. Four of the Dons’ opponents (two of which they play twice) begin the season ranked in the AVCA Top 25 polls, with four of their other opponents receiving votes. USF IN TOURNAMENT ACTION: The Dons played in three tournaments last season, winning the Hornet Invitational and going 5-4 in tournament play. USF has won nine tournaments in the past five years. Four different San Francisco players were named to All-tournament teams last year.

DORON RETURNS TO HILLTOP FOR FOURTH SEASON: Gilad Doron enters his fourth season at the University of San Francisco. After his team won seven West Coast Conference games last season, he became the school’s leader in West Coast Conference wins as a coach with 24. SOPHOMORE SWAGGER: The four returning players from the sophomore class are coming off a year during which they got some serious time under their belts as freshmen. Alycia Cox, Hadley Simmons and Erin Kilroy each played in all 27 of the Dons’ matches last season, with Leanna Ludes playing in 25 matches. SULLY SETS HERSELF UP: Senior setter Alaina Sully is currently ninth on USF’s all-time career assist list with 1,364 assists in her first three seasons. The Irvine, Calif. native needs to total 427 assists to move into eighth place. EXCLUSIVE CLUB: Senior Sarah Mandala needs 232 digs to join the exclusive 700 kills and 700 digs club at USF. Only eight other players In the history of the program have played their way Into the 700 club. Mandala dug 206 balls as a junior and 131 in both her sophomore and freshman years. USF PICKED FITH IN PRESEAON POLL: USF was picked to finish fifth in the 2010 West Coast Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. San Diego was selected as the preseason favorite, followed by Saint Mary’s, Pepperdine, Santa Clara and San Francisco. Gonzaga, Portland and Loyola Marymount rounded out the list.
