SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS: While UC Santa Barbara did lose All-American hitter Rebecca Saraceno, the Gauchos do return All-American setter Dana Vargas, who averaged 10.9 assists per set last season. Also returning is all-Big West middle blocker Stacey Schmidt. UCSB received votes in the preseason AVCA Preseason Top 25 poll after going 22-8 last year. The Gauchos return five starters from last year’s team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. LAST TIME VS. USF: The last time the two programs faced off was in 2008 at the USF Powerade/Asics Tournament. USF won 3-1 with former middle blocker Alix Gombs leading the Dons with 15 kills on .609 hitting. San Francisco and UC Santa Barbara also played one another in the 2006 USF Powerade/Asics Tournament, with USF also winning that match 3-1. SCOUTING THE HURRICANES: Tulsa returns four starters plus its libero, while also welcoming seven newcomers to the program. The Hurricanes finished second in Conference USA last year, ending the season with a 26-7 overall record. Leading hitter sophomore Tyler Henderson returns after averaging 4.62 kills/set and being named C-USA Freshman of the Year. Tulsa also returns setter Jordan Clampitt and second-team all-C-USA players Jessica Adams (libero) and Hannah Stout (middle blocker). LAST TIME VS. USF: This is the first time the Hurricanes and the Dons meet on the volleyball court.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS: Washington State returns four starters from last year’s Cougar squad that went 18-13 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Leading the way is junior outside hitter Meagan Ganzer, who was named MVP of the Nike Cougar Invitational last weekend. Also returning for the Cougars are middle blocker Brittany Tillman, libero Oceana Bush and Rachel Todorovich. LAST TIME VS. USF: The last time the two schools played one another was in 2003, with San Francisco winning in five sets (30-25, 28-30, 30-28, 28-30, 15-5).

MAKING AN ENTRANCE: Freshman setter Joan Caloiaro made a splash in her first weekend of collegiate volleyball. The Saratoga, Calif. native was named to the Bluejay Invitational All-Tournament team after playing in all 11 sets for the Dons. She began the tournament with 32 assists, 21 digs and six kills against Creighton and went on to put up 19 assists, seven digs and four kills against Kansas. Caloiaro was two kills shy of a triple-double against Creighton after totaling 12 assists, 12 digs and eight kills. APPROACHING A MILESTONE: San Francisco head coach Gilad Doron is just two wins away from his 100th win as a head coach. He is currently 98-82 and is in his seventh season as a head coach.

2009 REVIEW: The Dons finished in the top half of the West Coast Conference for the third-straight year underneath the guidance of head coach Gilad Doron. USF celebrated a major milestone, beating Cal State Bakersfield for the program’s 350th win. CHEMISTRY CHANGE: The Dons welcome eight newcomers to the Hilltop this season. USF’s incoming class includes six freshmen, sophomore defensive specialist Naeleen Nguyen and freshman middle blocker Jordan Irish, who medically redshirted last season.
