THIS WEEK: San Francisco will close out the 2010 season Saturday as they host Gonzaga for Senior Day at Neogesco Stadium at 2 p.m. Prior to the contest, USF will honor three of it’s own – Lauren Maris, Ashley O’Brien and Afiya Roberts. LAST WEEK: USF traveled to Portland to face the second-ranked Pilots at Merlo Field. The Dons held UP to just two goals despite Portland out shooting the Dons, 28-1. Portland got on the board at 28:11, before scoring again just inside the second half at 53:51. Christina Moberg fired the lone shot, which happened to be on goal, for the Dons. DUO EARNS ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS: A pair of seniors from the University of San Francisco women’s soccer team have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII team. Lauren Maris and Ashley O’Brien, both who will play their final game for the Dons Saturday, were awarded the honor as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Maris was bestowed the honor thanks to her 3.83 grade point average as she studies towards a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. O’Brien, who is enrolled in the Sport Management graduate program at USF, boasts a 3.58 GPA. SENIORS MAKE THEIR MARK: Saturday, USF will honor its’ three seniors – Lauren Maris, Ashley O’Brien and Afiya Roberts. All three have made an impact on the program during their time on the Hilltop. O’Brien transferred to USF following a successful career at Connecticut. In her two years in the Green and Gold, the native of Broadbrook, Connecticut has tallied nine total points thanks to three goals and three assists. This season, the defender more than doubled her point total from a year ago. As a junior, she was named to the All-West Region team while, more recently named to the CoSIDA All-Academic District VII second team. Also earning the academic honor was Maris. Maris has been a four-year letterwinner for the Dons, appearing in all 76 matches of her collegiate career. The forward from Issaquah, Wash. has registered 15 career points thanks to six goals and three assists. Rounding out the senior class is Roberts, who transferred to USF from UC Davis as a sophomore. Since her arrival on the Hilltop, Roberts has started all 58 matches, leading the defense to 11 shutouts – including two in West Coast Conference play this season. DONS EARN FIRST RESULT AGAINST LMU IN NEARLY 15 YEARS: Thanks to a 0-0 double overtime tie October 24, the Dons recorded their first results against LMU in Los Angeles in nearly 15 years. The last time USF earned a win or tie on the campus of Loyola Marymount was in 1996, when the Dons and Lions drew to a scoreless draw. Since then, USF has gone 0-6-1 in Los Angeles, including Sunday’s decision. ROBINSON SNAPS SHUTOUT: Not only did Keonna Robinson’s goal against San Diego on October 15 allow the Dons to avoid a shutout, it also was just the second time in five years the Dons have scored against the Toreros. Prior to a 3-2 loss last season, the Dons had not scored against San Diego since a 2-1 double overtime victory in 2005. DONS SNAP SCORELESS STREAK: Thanks to Molly Hall’s goal at Arizona, USF snapped a seven match shutout streak. During the span, USF went scoreless for 648 minutes. Prior to the streak, the Dons had not been shutout all season and were on a record scoring pace. The last time USF was shutout in four or more matches was in 2008, when the Dons suffered seven straight shutouts to close out the season. DONS OPEN HOME SLATE 4-0: Through the first four home matches of the season, USF was 4-0-0 when play on the Hilltop. The last time the Dons went 4-0 to open the home slate was in 1997.
