NEXT WEEK: USF will wrap up the non-conference schedule with its first “road-trip” of the season. Despite two trips to the East Bay and the pending trip to Davis, USF has not ventured far from home this season. San Francisco will take its show on the road as it travels to the State of Arizona to face Northern Arizona and Arizona, October 1 and 3. LAST WEEK: The Dons were unable to strike their recent slide last weekend, falling in a hard battle to then-No. 16 California 1-0 on Friday, before dropping a 2-0 home decision to UC Irvine. The Anteaters were receiving votes in the national polls. DONS OPEN HOME SLATE 4-0: Through the first four home matches of the season, USF was 4-0-0 when play on the Hilltop. The last time the Dons went 4-0 to open the home slate was in 1997. NORWEGIAN DUO EARNS NATIONAL ATTENTION: Christina Moberg and Hanna Haanes, both freshmen on the USF women’s soccer team, have been named to the Top Drawer National 100 Division I College Freshmen. Moberg and Haanes, both natives of Norway, are two of eight freshmen from the West Coast Conference to appear on this week’s list. Moberg is ranked 89th this week, while Haanes is listed at 91st. San Francisco is just one of two West Coast Conference schools to land two or more freshman in this week’s ranks. Portland leads the pack with three honors, including the highest ranked WCC representative, Erin Dees. The Pilots’ goalkeeper checks in at No. 9. Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s all have one student-athlete ranked. GOALS A PLENTY: The four goals against Santa Barbara (Aug. 29) marked the first time since a 4-0 victory over Cal State Northridge in 2006 that the Dons have scored four or more tallies against a Division I opponent. USF scored 11 goals through the opening five matches of the season. The last time USF scored 11 or more goals in the opening five matches of the season was in 2003. During the 2003 campaign, the Dons scored 17 goals in the first five matches, mainly thanks to an 8-0 victory over San Jose State. LANDMARK TO START THE SEASON: The season opening win against San Jose State marked the 175th victory in USF women’s soccer history. In 25 years on the Hilltop, The Dons have amassed a 177-268-33 record. Under the guidance of current head coach Mark Carr, San Francisco is 18-36-10. ASHLEY O’BRIEN EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Ashley O’Brien was named a national Primetime Performer of the Week, as announced by CollegeSoccer360.com, for the week of Sept. 1. O’Brien played an integral role in the Dons’ wins over North Florida and UC Santa Barbara, scoring two goals and an assist. With nine seconds remaining in the opening half against North Florida, the senior defender scored an unassisted goal off of a free kick. Sunday, Aug. 29, in a big 4-1 victory over defending Big West Champion UC Santa Barbara, O’Brien capped scoring with a goal late in the match. After being passed the ball from Molly Hall, The senior fired a shot from 10 yards out into the left side of the net. O’Brien also registered her assist against the Gauchos, assisting on Hanna Haanes’ game-winning goal in the first half. UNBLEMISHED TO START THE SEASON: San Francisco’s 3-0-0 unblemished record to open the season marked the first time since 1996 that the Dons had gone undefeated against a trio of Division I foes to open the season. Last year, USF opened with a 3-0-0 mark, facing one Division I opponent.
