USF @ Washington Match #11 • Sun., Sept. 25 • 4:00 pm Husky Soccer Stadium Seattle, Wash.
Dons Head To Seattle Before Starting WCC Action USF spilt last weekend, including a shutout win over Portland State Freshman continues to pace USF offense GAME NOTES THIS WEEK: San Francisco will take its final non-conference road trip this weekend as the Dons travel to the Emerald City to face Seattle and Washington. USF will open action Friday at 4 p.m. against the Redhawks, before taking on the Huskies Sunday at 4. NEXT WEEK: USF will open West Coast Conference action, spilting the weekend between Negoesco Stadium and Southern California. The Dons will open the eight-match conference schedule hosting Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. before traveling to San Diego, Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. LAST WEEK: The Dons opened the weekend with a 2-0 shutout over Portland State at home. Christina Moberg paced the Green and Gold in the match with a goal and an assist. Mackenzie Krieser added her team-leading fourth goal as well. The Dons didn’t fair as well against No. 25 California, Sunday, falling 6-1. Moberg scored the lone tally for USF. MOBERG AND KRIESER POSE OFFENSIVE THREAT: The duo of sophomore Christina Moberg and Mackenzie Krieser are an threat to opponents this year. The two currently account for 17 total points; over half of the Dons’ 27 total points this season. Krieser leads the two with four glas and two assists, while Moberg is giving her a run for her money as the team leader in both categories. Moberg currently has tallied three goals and one assist. Two of Moberg’s assists and one of her goals came last weekend at home. KRIESER MAKES IMPACT IMMEDIATELY: Freshman forward Mackenzie Krieser has made an immediate impact for the Dons, starting all nine matches of her young career. The Medford, Ore. native has proven to be a force to be reckoned with, scoring four goals while adding two assists for 10 points. The 10 points marks the most for a Don in a single season, since Chelsea Hunt posted a dozen in 2006. In 2003, Shuree Hyatt posted 20 points marking the last time a newcomer led the team with double-digit points. TRIO OF DONS EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS IN BERKELEY: Mackenzie Krieser, Christina Moberg, and Jaciara Mello each were named to the Cal Invitational All-Tournament team thanks to their efforts over the weekend. Krieser led the Dons with a goal and two assists, while Mello and Moberg each added a tally in USF’s 4-1 victory over Kent State Sunday. ZABALA NAMED TO CAL ATHLETICS HOF: Maite Zabala returns to the HIlltop for her fifth season as an assistant this year, only with a new accolade and a new title. Over the summer, Zabala was named as one of the newest members of the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame. The former goalkeeper for the Bears will be enshrined into the Hall this fall. A two-time first-team All-Pac-10 performer, Zabala was an outstanding goalkeeper for the Bears from 1997-2000. She helped Cal to three NCAA Tournaments, including a school-record 17 wins in 2000, and finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in shutouts (26.5) and saves (277). CHANGES IN THE WOMEN’S SOCCER STAFF: As head coach Mark Carr enters his fifth year on the Hilltop, his staff will have a new look. During the offseason, Carr promoted Maite Zabala to Associate Head Coach, while naming a new Assistant Coach, Katie Burton. An experienced assistant and a former college standout at Sacramento State, Burton spent last season as an assistant coach at UNLV.
