LAST TIME VS. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: San Francisco won the series last season after scoring eight runs or more in all three games. The Dons won the first two games of the series 8-5 and 9-2 before dropping the final game 9-11.
MR. RBI: Junior first baseman Nik Balog was an RBI machine against Santa Clara on April 23. His first at bat resulted in a 2-RBI single up the middle, his second led to a 2-RBI double to left center and his third hit drove in two runs as well. He collected nearly one third of his 21 RBIs this season in three at bats. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: USF catcher Travis Higgs was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his play during the week of April 11-17. Higgs was behind the plate for two of the three Dons’ wins at Portland and was a designated hitter in the third game. He hit .429 with a .929 slugging percentage and collected six hits in 14 at bats and totaled seven RBIs, two home runs, one double and four runs scored with only three strikeouts. A PLACE IN HISTORY: Senior pitcher Matt Lujan passed Kevin Rose (2001-04) to become USF’s all-time starts leader with his 48th start on April 16th against Portland. He also claimed his 22nd win on April 16th to tie Patrick McGuigan and Dana Hendershott for career wins at USF. His next shot at becoming the Dons’ all-time victory leader will be on Friday, April 29th at home against Loyola Marymount. BETTER THAN THE REST: The Dons put together their highest scoring game of the season on April 16 against Portland, winning by a score of 19-2. USF totaled seasonbests in hits (22), RBI’s (18), total bases (36), at bats (47) and home runs (3). USF’s totals in runs, hits and RBIs were also the most this year by a West Coast Conference team. HOME RUN MACHINE: Stephen Yarrow hit three home runs in the series against Portland. The first, which was also his first of the season, came via a grand slam on April 16. The senior third baseman added a three-run shot later that game and added a two-run homer in the third game of the series. He is now No. 3 in career home runs (34). He also moved into No. 4 in all-time extra base hits. MULTIPLE HITS: USF has 13 players that have registered multiple hit games this season. Five of those players have done so in 10 or more games. Pete Lavin leads the team with 20 multiple-hit games and is the only Don to have notched four hits in a game this year. Junior Adam Clear has totaled three hits in four games this season.

RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: USF’s 1-0 win against Saint Mary’s on April 9th gave head coach Nino Giarratano his 350th career Division I coaching win at USF. Another six West Coast Conference wins will give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history. Giarratano is just 18 wins from passing Dante Benedetti to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. SIXTH SENSE: After hitting seven doubles this season, Connor Bernatz is now No. 6 in career doubles (42) for the Green and Gold. He needs just two more doubles to become one of the top-five all-time doubles hitters for the Dons. AMONG THE LEADERS: Senior Pete Lavin leads the West Coast Conference in hits (59), walks (24), total bases (84) and triples (4) and stolen bases (16) and is second in batting average (.351), runs (32) and doubles (14). SWING AND A MISS: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer struck out 14 against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 9. That put him in second in total strikeouts in a single game in USF history. Con Dempsey notched a program-best 16 strikeouts against Saint Mary’s in 1946. FIELD(ING) OF DREAMS: USF leads all Division I baseball teams in fielding with a .984 fielding percentage. The Dons have committed only 25 errors in 41 games and went without an error in 22 of those games. TEAM EFFORT: Seven USF pitchers joined forces to post a complete game shut out against Cal Poly on April 5. The Dons struck out nine and walked just one. Senior Jonathan Abramson threw two innings of hitless baseball and Haden Hinkle posted one hitless inning. TOP DOG: USF right-handed pitcher Garrett Luippold’s appearance in the fourth inning of the Dons’ game against No. 13 California on March 29th made him USF’s all-time appearances leader. With 89 appearances to his resume, Luippold moved past Patrick McGuigan’s 88 appearances from 2003-06. The senior has now totaled 95 career appearances. ROCKING THE VOTE: USF has played 11 games against ranked teams this season, living up to the preseason ranking of the seventh toughest non-conference schedule in the country. TAKING THE SERIES: USF won it’s fourth series of the season after sweeping Santa Clara in three games. The Dons also won two out of three against UC Davis and Pacific this year and swept Portland. RUNNING WITH THE PAC (10): San Francisco may play in the West Coast Conference, but the Dons will play 20 percent of their games this season against Pac-10 teams. USF has already played three times against Arizona, twice against California and Oregon. The Dons will also make a trip to Stanford in mid-May. WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 128 free passes this season. A total of 15 different players have drawn walks. Pete Lavin leads the league in walks with 24 and Stephen Yarrow is third with 23.
“IT’S TIME.”
HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: The Dons are up to 18 home runs this season. Keep donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign! Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page. GUEST APPEARANCE: Dons fans listening to the audio broadcast of USF’s game at California were treated to a special surprise when Giants’ announcer Duane Kuiper stopped by the radio booth to do an inning with Anthony D’Albora, the voice of the Dons. Kuiper spoke at the team’s crab feed kickoff dinner and pledged to keep in touch with the team. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: USF senior right-handed pitcher Matt Hiserman was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 8-13. During the Cal Baseball Classic this weekend, the senior hurler totaled a win and a save and gave up just two hits in nine innings of work. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning against UCSB to preserve the Dons’ 3-2 win and earned his first save of the season. On Sunday morning, Hiserman threw eight scoreless innings and gave up just two hits to lead USF it’s first shutout of the season by way of a 4-0 win against Louisiana-Lafayette. SAVE THAT GAME BALL: Two USF pitchers earned their first collegiate wins on the mound against UC Davis. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Zimmer earned his victory in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 27 after pitching seven innings and giving up just two runs on six hits, while striking out eight. Later that afternoon, freshman right-hander Alex Balog was a winner after throwing a hitless seventh inning. MOVIN’ ON UP: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow cracked USF’s top 10 all-time RBI list after collecting three RBIs in the Dons’ 8-4 win against UC Davis. He has totaled 118 thus far in his career, putting himself sixth in school history needs just five more to move into the top five all-time. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons. SAFE AT FIRST: Senior catcher Travis Higgs gets credit for the first hit of the 2011 season. His single to leftfield came during the fifth inning of the Dons’ first game of the season against UCLA. STANDING TALL: The Dons feature not only a hard-throwing and crafty pitching staff, but a physically imposing one as well. USF boasts 12 pitchers that stand 6-foot-2 or taller and four that are 6-foot-5 or taller.
