LAST TIME VS. STANFORD: The Dons claimed a 5-1 win on March 29, 2010 at Stanford with Haden Hinkle earning the win on the mound, his first collegiate victory. It was the first USF win against the Cardinal in four years.

HOT CORNER HERO: The USF infield has been home to Stephen Yarrow for four years and 166 starts. After beginning his career as a first baseman he has become one of the league’s premier third basemen and one of the program’s most decorated hitters. Yarrow is in the top five in career home runs, RBIs, extra base hits and total bases and top 10 in put outs and at bats. CINDERELLA MAN: From freshman All-American to re-writing the Dons’ record books, Connor Bernatz has made his mark at USF during his four-year career. He ranks in the top sixth in all-time doubles, is one base hit away from the top 10 in career hits and total bases and is already in the top 10 in at bats. The right fielder is also just one sacrifice bunt away from totaling the most sacrifices in a single season in program history. BIG PETE: After transferring to USF following two seasons at the junior college level, Pete Lavin has started every game for the Dons in the past two seasons. Lavin is close to totaling top 10 single season numbers in at bats, hits, runs, extra-base hits, stolen bases, doubles and walks. CHART TOPPER: Left-hander Matt Lujan became the Dons’ all-time winningest pitcher after claiming his 23rd victory on April 29 against Loyola Marymount. He is also number one in career starts and second in innings pitched. Lujan’s total of 224 strikeouts is fifth best in program history.

2011 USF BASEBALL

THE LIFEGUARD: Relief pitcher Jonathan Abramson is all about the saves. As a sophomore, he collected five saves, which was the fourth best single season save total in school history. The right-hander is shooting to tie that total again or surpass it as he has four saves this season. Abramson is also eighth in career appearances with 70 trips to the mound. FLAME THROWER: After just three years at USF, senior Matt Hiserman is just one strikeout away from becoming one of the program’s top 10 pitchers in career strikeouts. He has totaled 165 strikeouts and can move into sixth on the all-time list with 10 additional strikeouts. WORTH THE WAIT: For four years, Travis Higgs waited patiently for his turn behind home plate. This season he’s making the most of his opportunity by leading the team in home runs and slugging percentage, while being second in doubles and RBIs. STAYING ON TRACK: Pitcher Sean Burns save his best academic effort for his final year on the Hilltop. The right-handed reliever was the recipient of the Movin’ on Up Award this fall, which is given to the player with the greatest academic improvement. GOING STREAKING: Outfielder Pete Lavin is taking an 14-game hitting streak into the series against Pepperdine this weekend. Lavin has hit safely in 39 of the Dons’ 47 games this season. The senior is hitting .411 in West Coast Conference play. WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 156 free passes this season. A total of 15 different players have drawn walks. Stephen Yarrow is first in the league in walks with 31 and Pete Lavin is third with 27. HOME SWEET HOME: USF is now 12-3 at Bendetti Diamond this season. The Dons have won seven-straight games at home and have four more games in the comfort of their own dugout this spring. YOU ARE OUT: Junior Nik Balog is now second in all-time put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed 975 put outs and leads the West Coast Conference with 420 putouts this season. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the third week in a row, the West Coast Conference Player of the Week award went to a USF player. Shortstop Aritz Garcia earned the honors for his play during the week of April 24th. The junior hit .533 in four games for the Dons with a .667 slugging percentage. Garcia totaled eight hits, two doubles, two RBIs, two walks and two sacrifice bunts and a stolen base to lead the Dons to a 4-0 record last week. He was error free in 41 innings of baseball with 12 assists and three put outs. Garcia recorded multiple hits in four games, including a three-hit game against Loyola Marymount on April 30. NO RUNS FOR YOU: Left-handed closer Jordan Remer did not yield a run during the entire month of April. The junior gave up just two hits in seven appearances, while striking out 19 in 12 innings of work and allowing an opposing batting average of just .057. FROM THE BULLPEN: Of all USF pitchers with at least 10 innings on the mound, relief pitcher Elliott Waterman leads the team in

ERA (2.95) and has moved to a 6-1 record after this past weekend of play. The sophomore has made 19 appearances to total 39.2 innings, which is the most of any reliever on the roster. He has given up just 13 earned runs and struck out 37. GOING THE EXTRA MILE: The Dons claimed their fourth and fifth extra inning wins of the season on April 30 and May 1 and are now 5-1 in extended games this season. Sophomore Jared Denham has scored the winning run in the last two wins and made contact at the plate to force a fielding error to score the winning run in the Dons’ third extra inning win. TAKING THE SERIES: USF won it’s fifth series of the season after sweeping Loyola Marymount in three games. The Dons also won two out of three against UC Davis and Pacific this year and swept Portland and Santa Clara. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dons’centerfielder Pete Lavin was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performances during the week of April 18. Lavin hit .526 in four games last week. The senior totaled 10 hits, three doubles, six runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base from the leadoff spot. He turned in a .684 slugging percentage and .571 on base percentage. Lavin was flawless in the outfield, catching 10 balls without an error. He is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak. It’s the second consecutive week that a USF player earned Player of the Week honors after Travis Higgs snagged the award last week. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: USF catcher Travis Higgs was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his play during the week of April 11-17. Higgs was behind the plate for two of the three Dons’ wins at Portland and was a designated hitter in the third game. He hit .429 with a .929 slugging percentage and collected six hits in 14 at bats and totaled seven RBIs, two home runs, one double and four runs scored with only three strikeouts. BETTER THAN THE REST: The Dons put together their highest scoring game of the season on April 16 against Portland, winning by a score of 19-2. USF totaled season-bests in hits (22), RBI’s (18), total bases (36), at bats (47) and home runs (3). USF’s totals in runs, hits and RBIs were also the most this year by a WCC team. MULTIPLE HITS: USF has 13 players that have registered multiple hit games this season. Seven of those players have done so in 10 or more games. Pete Lavin leads the team with 23 multiple-hit games and is the only Don to have notched four hits in a game this year. Junior Adam Clear has totaled three hits in four games this season. RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: USF’s 1-0 win against Saint Mary’s on April 9th gave head coach Nino Giarratano his 350th career Division I coaching win at USF. Another two West Coast Conference wins will give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history. Giarratano is just 12 wins from passing Dante Benedetti to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. RUNNING WITH THE PAC (10): San Francisco may play in the West Coast Conference, but the Dons will play 20 percent of their games this season against Pac-10 teams.
