LAST TIME VS. GONZAGA: The Bulldogs won two out of the three games at USF last season winning the first game 3-2 and the third game 6-2 in 13 innings. The Dons won the second game 20-9.

RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: USF’s 1-0 win against Saint Mary’s on April 9th gave head coach Nino Giarratano his 350th career Division I coaching win at USF. With an 8-6 win against Pepperdine on May 15, Giarratano moved past Marv Wood to total the seventh-most league wins in West Coast Conference history. Three more wins would make him sixth on the WCC wins list. Giarratano is just 10 wins from passing Dante Benedetti to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. FOR HIS TEAM: Outfielder Connor Bernatz tied the program’s single-season sacrifice record with his 11th sacrifice bunt of the year in the Dons’ 8-6 win against Pepperdine on May 15th. The senior has four games this week to break the record. Bernatz also ranks in the top 10 in career hits, doubles, total bases and at bats. BANNER YEAR ON THE MOUND: The Dons’ pitching staff is in the midst of turning in an impressive season. USF has totaled 387 strikeouts thus far, which is the fourth best total in program history. Three more strikeouts would move the 2011 pitching staff into second and another 14 would give this year’s squad the most strikeouts in a season in school history. The staff has also totaled 11 saves, which is third best in USF history and is currently fifth in team ERA at 3.89. GAME WINNER: The Dons trailed Pepperdine 2-0 in the first game of the series on May 13. With two outs and runners on first and second, senior Pete Lavin blasted a threerun home run over the right center field fence in the seventh inning to give USF a 3-2 victory. It was his 22nd extra base hit of the season.

2011 USF BASEBALL

FLAME THROWER: After just three years at USF, senior Matt Hiserman moved into the top 10 in career strikeouts after totaling seven strikeouts against Pepperdine on May 14. The right-hander is eighth all-time with 172 strikeouts. He needs just four more to move into sixth. WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 67 free passes this season in league play. Stephen Yarrow is second in WCC play with 13 walks, while Connor Bernatz is fourth with 11. HOME SWEET HOME: USF is now 15-3 at Bendetti Diamond this season. The Dons have won 10-straight games at home and have just one more game to play in the comfort of their own dugout this spring. YOU ARE OUT: Junior Nik Balog is now second in all-time put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed 995 career put outs and is second in the West Coast Conference with 161 putouts this season. MULTIPLE HITS: USF has 13 players that have registered multiple hit games this season. Seven of those players have done so in 10 or more games. Pete Lavin leads the team with 25 multiple-hit games and is the only Don to have notched four hits in a game this year. Junior Adam Clear has totaled three hits in four games this season. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the third week in a row, the West Coast Conference Player of the Week award went to a USF player. Shortstop Aritz Garcia earned the honors for his play during the week of April 24th. The junior hit .533 in four games for the Dons with a .667 slugging percentage. Garcia totaled eight hits, two doubles, two RBIs, two walks and two sacrifice bunts and a stolen base to lead the Dons to a 4-0 record last week. He was error free in 41 innings of baseball with 12 assists and three put outs. Garcia recorded multiple hits in four games, including a three-hit game against Loyola Marymount on April 30. NO RUNS FOR YOU: Left-handed closer Jordan Remer did not yield a run during the entire month of April. The junior gave up just two hits in seven appearances, while striking out 19 in 12 innings of work and allowing an opposing batting average of just .057. FROM THE BULLPEN: Of all USF pitchers with at least 10 innings on the mound, relief pitcher Elliott Waterman leads the team in ERA (2.81) and has moved to a 6-1 record. The sophomore has made 20 appearances to total 41.2 innings, which is the most of any reliever on the roster. He has given up just 13 earned runs and struck out 40. HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: The Dons are up to 27 home runs this season. Keep donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign! Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page.

“IT’S TIME.”

GOING THE EXTRA MILE: The Dons claimed their fourth and fifth extra inning wins of the season on April 30 and May 1 and are now 5-1 in extended games this season. Sophomore Jared Denham has scored the winning run in the last two wins and made contact at the plate to force a fielding error to score the winning run in the Dons’ third extra inning win. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dons’centerfielder Pete Lavin was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performances during the week of April 18. Lavin hit .526 in four games last week. The senior totaled 10 hits, three doubles, six runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base from the leadoff spot. He turned in a .684 slugging percentage and .571 on base percentage. Lavin was flawless in the outfield, catching 10 balls without an error. He is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak. It’s the second consecutive week that a USF player earned Player of the Week honors after Travis Higgs snagged the award last week. MR. RBI: Junior first baseman Nik Balog was an RBI machine against Santa Clara on April 23. His first at bat resulted in a 2-RBI single up the middle, his second led to a 2-RBI double to left center and his third hit drove in two runs as well. He collected nearly one third of his 21 RBIs this season in three at bats. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: USF catcher Travis Higgs was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his play during the week of April 11-17. Higgs was behind the plate for two of the three Dons’ wins at Portland and was a designated hitter in the third game. He hit .429 with a .929 slugging percentage and collected six hits in 14 at bats and totaled seven RBIs, two home runs, one double and four runs scored with only three strikeouts. BETTER THAN THE REST: The Dons put together their highest scoring game of the season on April 16 against Portland, winning by a score of 19-2. USF totaled season-bests in hits (22), RBI’s (18), total bases (36), at bats (47) and home runs (3). USF’s totals in runs, hits and RBIs were also the most this year by a West Coast Conference team. HOME RUN MACHINE: Stephen Yarrow hit three home runs in the series against Portland. The first, which was also his first of the season, came via a grand slam on April 16. The senior third baseman added a three-run shot later that game and added a two-run homer in the third game of the series. He is now No. 3 in career home runs (35). He also moved into No. 4 in all-time extra base hits. SWING AND A MISS: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer struck out 14 against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 9. That put him in second in total strikeouts in a single game in USF history. Con Dempsey notched a program-best 16 strikeouts against Saint Mary’s in 1946. ROCKING THE VOTE: USF has played 11 games against ranked teams this season, living up to the preseason ranking of the seventh toughest non-conference schedule in the country.
