SCOUTING THE AGGIES: New Mexico State is off to an undefeated start after returning three of its four starting pitchers from last season. More importantly, however, the Aggies return much of their offensive firepower from a team that ranked among the nation’s leaders in almost every offensive category. New Mexico State finished the season ranked No. 1 in the country in runs, No. 4 in homeruns, slugging percentage and hits and No. 5 in batting average. LAST TIME VS. NEW MEXICO STATE: The Dons played a four-game series at New Mexico State on March 20-22, 2009. USF went 1-3 in four high-scoring contests by scores of 12-24, 20-15, 6-10 and 6-11.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS: Cal State Northridge begins a new era under first year coach Matt Curtis (a Fresno State graduate). Curtis returns five starting position players and 11 pitchers from last year’s team that posted the program’s first winning season since 2002. The Cardinal Classic is the first time that the Matadors will play on the road this season. Sophomore catcher Marty Bowen has been the team’s offensive spark early in the season, putting up a .583 batting average. LAST TIME VS. CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE: The two teams last met for a threegame series on Feb 1-3, 2002. The then No.22 Matadors swept the series 10-6, 13-12 and 16-9.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS: Sacramento State said good-bye to head coach John Smith this summer, after Smith retired following 32 years at the helm of the program. First-year coach Reggie Christiansen has 17 newcomers on his squad this year and is set to use an all-freshman rotation early in the season. The Hornets were picked to finish last in the Western Athletic Conference. LAST TIME VS. SACRAMENTO: The Dons beat the Hornets 5-4 in 11 innings on April 7, 2010 at Benedetti Diamond.
SPORTSCENTER WORTHY: Two plays after being inserted as a defensive replacement in leftfield during the first game of the doubleheader against UC Davis, Graeme Agate wowed the crowd with his speed and athleticism. The junior sprinted into left center to make a diving catch that amazed fans from both teams.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow cracked USF’s top 10 all-time RBI list after collecting three RBIs in the Dons’ 8-4 win against UC Davis. He has totaled 106 thus far in his career and needs just 18 more to move into the top five all-time.

KEEPING UP HIS APPEARANCES: Senior left-handed pitcher Garrett Luippold’s trip to the mound in Saturday’s game against UC Davis moved him into a tie for third place in all-time appearances in USF baseball program history. He needs just eight more appearances to become the all-time leader.
CLOSE TO HOME: USF plays 22 of its 55 games at Bendetti Diamond this season, with another seven games taking place at neutral sites. The Dons will play 31 of their 55 games within 84 miles of the USF campus. Four of the team’s game will take place at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.
WINDY CITY WIZARD: After two weeks of play, junior designed hitter Tom Barry is among the top 10 in batting averages for players in the West Coast Conference with at least 10 at bats. Barry is hitting .444 and only two WCC players have logged more at bats.
DANTE BENEDETTI CLASSIC: San Francisco will hold the sixth annual Dante Benedetti Classic at AT&T Park on Tuesday, March 15th against San Jose State. The first pitch is set for 12:20 p.m. with the Saint Ignatius and Sacred Heart Cathedral game set to follow at 3:30 p.m. USF is 4-1 in Benedetti Classic games. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at the game or online at http:// dantebenedetticlassic.eventbrite.com/ until March 8.
SNEAKY THIEF: Senior Pete Lavin and Santa Clara’s Matt Ozanne lead the West Coast Conference in stolen bases with five a piece. Lavin totaled a team-high 16 stolen bases last season. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons. FIRST TIME OUT: Six players made their career debuts for the Green and Gold during the UCLA series: transfers Tom Barry, Aritz Garcia, Ted LeMasters and freshmen Alex Balog, Ben Graff and Jordan Haseltine. SAFE AT FIRST: Senior catcher Travis Higgs gets credit for the first hit of the 2011 season. His single to leftfield came during the fifth inning of the Dons’ first game of the season against UCLA. HEAD OF THE CLASS: College Baseball Daily named Dons’ third baseman Stephen Yarrow one of their ten seniors to watch this season. Also included on this list were: Paul Hoilman (East Tennessee State), Chad Obernacker (Tennessee Tech), Mike McGee (Florida State), Jordan Ribera (Fresno State), Chad Arnold (Washington State), Cole Green (Texas), Mike Nemeth (Connecticut), Steve Maxwell (TCU) and Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana). STANDING TALL: The Dons feature not only a hard-throwing and crafty pitching staff, but a physically imposing one as well. USF boasts 12 pitchers that stand 6-foot-2 or taller and four that are 6-foot-5 or taller. SINGLED OUT: College Baseball Insider dubbed USF head coach Nino Giarratano the best game coach in the West Coast Conference. It also listed senior Stephen Yarrow as one of the three biggest power threats in the conference. BASEBALL AMERICA PREDICTIONS: Baseball America’s preseason look at the West Coast Conference predicts that USF senior Stephen Yarrow will be this season’s Player of the Year. It also lists Yarrow as the seventh best WCC prospect for the 2011 Major League Draft. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: Boyd’s World, a national collegiate baseball website, ranks the Dons’ non-conference schedule as the seventh most difficult in the country. It lists USF’s overall schedule as 24th toughest in the nation.
PRESEASON HONORS: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow was named a Preseason All-West Coast Conference selection. Yarrow, was a first-team All-WCC pick last spring after leading the league in home runs with 16. He hit .310 with 46 RBIs, 12 doubles and a .635 slugging percentage. POWERING UP: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow enters the 2011 season in the top 10 in home runs, extra base hits and putouts in USF history. He needs just six home runs to become second all-time and needs just four triples to become the school’s all-time leader. Four more RBIs will put Yarrow in the top 10 in that category as well. CHART TOPPER: Senior pitcher Matt Lujan is just five victories away from becoming the school’s all-time wins leader. The left–handed pitcher has won 18 games in his three years on the Hilltop. Lujan is also nine starts away from starting the most games in USF history. RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: Head coach Nino Giarratano enters the 2011 season just 14 wins away from collecting his 350th victory at USF. Another 13 West Coast Conference wins would give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history. HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH CAMPAIGN: Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each nets costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page. MAKING THE GRADE: The USF baseball team posted the highest cumulative team GPA in a semester with a 3.26 during the fall of 2010 in program history. The previous record of 3.25 was set two years ago. An impressive 62 percent of the team earned a 3.0 or higher, with 97 percent of the team earning a 2.5 or higher. Five USF baseball players were also named to the West Coast Conference’s All-Academic team last spring. PRIDE IN YOUR COUNTRY: USF head coach Nino Giarratano spent his summer coaching for the United States Collegiate National Team. The team competed in Japan and Taiwan and finished with a silver medal at the FISU World Championships.
