LAST TIME VS. CALIFORNIA: USF pulled off a 7-6 win in 11 innings on March 16 in Berkeley. Cal forced extra innings after scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Stephen Yarrow hit an RBI single in the 11th that proved to be the difference maker.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: Fresno State is riding a seven-game winning streak, which includes a 22-inning win against San Diego last weekend. The game, which took seven hours and 12 minutes to complete, was the third longest game in NCAA Division I history. The Bulldogs return six starters and four starting pitchers from last year’s 38-25 team that won the WAC regular season championship. Fresno State is 7-0 against WCC teams (Gonzaga, Pepperdine and San Diego) this season. USF is set to face RHP pitcher Greg Gonzalez, who was named WAC Pitcher of the Week after improving to 5-0 last weekend. LAST TIME VS. FRESNO STATE: The two teams met last year in the Aztec Invitational at San Diego State on March 12. The Bulldogs won 5-2 victory after falling behind 2-0 in the early innings.

UP FOR GRABS: The Dons have started six different players in left field this season: Jared Denham, Bob Mott, Graeme Agate, Ted LeMasters, Mason Morioka and this past weekend, Tom Barry. Of the nine positions on the field, left field has seen the most change from game to game. Nik Balog and Stephen Yarrow have started every game at first and third bases this season, while Pete Lavin has held down centerfield in every game as well. Jason Mahood and Connor Bernatz have started at second and in right field for all but one game, while Higgs has started 19 games behind the plate and Morioka the other five. A PLACE IN HISTORY: USF right-handed pitcher Garrett Luippold’s appearance in the ninth inning of the Dons’ third game against Arizona marked the senior’s 88th appearance on the mound. That moved him into a tie with Patrick McGuigan for most appearances in USF history. Luippold’s next appearance will give him sole possession of most trips to the mound in school history. RUNNING WITH THE PAC (10): San Francisco may play in the West Coast Conference, but the Dons will play 20 percent of their games this season against Pac-10 teams. USF has already played once against California and Oregon and three times against Arizona and UCLA and will face the Ducks again in mid-April. The Dons will also host California this week and make a trip to Stanford in mid-May. TWICE AS NICE: USF has totaled 44 doubles this season, with 12 different players having notched a two-base hit. Senior Stephen Yarrow leads the team with nine, but junior Adam Clear is right on his heels with seven.

AMONG THE LEADERS: Senior Pete Lavin leads the West Coast Conference in walks (17), stolen bases (14) and triples (3) and is second in hits (32) and tied for sixth in batting average (.344). Junior Adam Clear is fourth in the league with a .345 batting average, while Stephen Yarrow is second in doubles (9) and third in RBI’s (17) and walks (14). First baseman Nik Balog leads the WCC in put outs with 205. WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 77 free passes this season. A total of 14 different players have drawn walks with Pete Lavin leading the way (17) and Stephen Yarrow and Connor Bernatz drawing 14 and 12, respectively. HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: The Dons are up to six home runs this season after Tom Barry, Jason Mahood and Travis Higgs all homered last week against Pacific. It was Higgs’ second deep shot of the season. Keep donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign! Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page. MOVIN’ ON UP: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow cracked USF’s top 10 all-time RBI list after collecting three RBIs in the Dons’ 8-4 win against UC Davis. He has totaled 118 thus far in his career, putting himself sixth in school history needs just five more to move into the top five all-time. RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: Head coach Nino Giarratano is just three wins away from collecting his 350th victory at USF. Another 13 West Coast Conference wins would give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history. GOING THE EXTRA MILE: The Dons claimed their second extra inning win of the season on March 16 at No. 15 California. USF senior Stephen Yarrow fought off numerous pitches pitches, behind in an 0-2 count, before lacing a fastball into left field to score the eventual game-winning run. The Dons played in just three extra inning games last season and have already matched that total a third of the way into the 2011 season. GUEST APPEARANCE: Dons fans listening to the audio broadcast of USF’s game at California were treated to a special surprise when Giants’ announcer Duane Kuiper stopped by the radio booth to do an inning with Anthony D’Albora, the voice of the Dons. Kuiper spoke at the team’s crab feed kickoff dinner and pledged to keep in touch with the team. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: USF senior right-handed pitcher Matt Hiserman was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 8-13. During the Cal Baseball Classic this weekend, the senior hurler totaled a win and a save and gave up just two hits in nine innings of work. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning against UCSB to preserve the Dons’ 3-2 win and earned his first save of the season. On Sunday morning, Hiserman threw eight scoreless

innings and gave up just two hits to lead USF it’s first shutout of the season by way of a 4-0 win against Louisiana-Lafayette. SAVE THAT GAME BALL: Two USF pitchers earned their first collegiate wins on the mound against UC Davis. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Zimmer earned his victory in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 27 after pitching seven innings and giving up just two runs on six hits, while striking out eight. Later that afternoon, freshman right-hander Alex Balog was a winner after throwing a hitless seventh inning. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons. SAFE AT FIRST: Senior catcher Travis Higgs gets credit for the first hit of the 2011 season. His single to leftfield came during the fifth inning of the Dons’ first game of the season against UCLA. HEAD OF THE CLASS: College Baseball Daily named Dons’ third baseman Stephen Yarrow one of their ten seniors to watch this season. Also included on this list were: Paul Hoilman (East Tennessee State), Chad Obernacker (Tennessee Tech), Mike McGee (Florida State), Jordan Ribera (Fresno State), Chad Arnold (Washington State), Cole Green (Texas), Mike Nemeth (Connecticut), Steve Maxwell (TCU) and Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana). STANDING TALL: The Dons feature not only a hard-throwing and crafty pitching staff, but a physically imposing one as well. USF boasts 12 pitchers that stand 6-foot-2 or taller and four that are 6-foot-5 or taller. SINGLED OUT: College Baseball Insider dubbed USF head coach Nino Giarratano the best game coach in the West Coast Conference. It also listed senior Stephen Yarrow as one of the three biggest power threats in the conference. BASEBALL AMERICA PREDICTIONS: Baseball America’s preseason look at the West Coast Conference predicts that USF senior Stephen Yarrow will be this season’s Player of the Year. It also lists Yarrow as the seventh best WCC prospect for the 2011 Major League Draft. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: Boyd’s World, a national collegiate baseball website, ranks the Dons’ non-conference schedule as the seventh most difficult in the country. It lists USF’s overall schedule as 24th toughest in the nation. CLOSE TO HOME: USF plays 22 of its 55 games at Bendetti Diamond this season, with another seven games taking place at neutral sites. The Dons will play 31 of their 55 games within 84 miles of the USF campus. Four of the team’s game will take place at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. PRESEASON HONORS: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow was named a Preseason All-West Coast Conference selection. Yarrow, was a first-team All-WCC pick last spring.
