LAST TIME VS. SAN JOSE STATE: The Dons posted their second shutout of the season against San Jose State on April 15. The game was played at AT&T Park as part of the Dante Benedetti Classic with USF posting a 10-0 win. The Dons totaled 17 hits with 12 different players notching a hit. SCOUTING THE PILOTS: Portland began the West Coast Conference season by beating Pepperdine two games to one to win the series. Freshman Turner Gill is fifth in the league in batting average, having hit .348 so far this season. The Pilots have a 5.19 ERA this season, compared to the Dons’ ERA of 3.93, and are hitting .264. Seven of Portland’s losses have come by two runs or less and the team has already played in four extra inning games, going 2-2. LAST TIME VS. PORTLAND: The Dons swept the Pilots last season at Benedetti Diamond, winning by scores of 10-3, 7-6, 4-2. Stephen Yarrow led USF to the 7-6 victory with a three-run walk off home run in the second game of the series. USF has won five of the last six meetings.

SCOUTING THE DUCKS: Oregon has lost five of its past six games, dropping back-to-back series to then-No. 5 Arizona State and Washington to open Pac10 play. The Ducks are 8-6 this season at home with a team batting average of just .232, but are among the top 20 teams in the country in staff ERA with a 2.79. All of Oregon’s four starters are averaging less than one hit per inning. LAST TIME VS. OREGON: The game between USF and Oregon on March 23 was originally scheduled to be played at Benedetti Diamond, but was moved to Laney College in Oakland because of weather and field conditions. Oregon came away with a 6-1 win after jumping out to an early lead and the Dons could never close the gap.

USF SWING AND A MISS: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer struck out 14 against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 9. That put him second in total strikeouts in a single game in USF history. Con Dempsey notched a program-best 16 strikeouts against Saint Mary’s in 1946. FIELD(ING) OF DREAMS: USF leads all Division I baseball teams in fielding with a .988 fielding percentage. The Dons have committed just 15 errors in 32 games. RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: Head coach Nino Giarratano is two wins away from collecting his 350th victory at USF. Another 12 West Coast Conference wins would give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history.

LOOKING FINE AT NINE: After hitting five doubles this season, Connor Bernatz is now No. 7 in career doubles (40) for the Green and Gold. He needs just four more doubles to become one of the top-five all-time doubles hitters for the Dons. TEAM EFFORT: Seven USF pitchers joined forces to post a complete game shut out against Cal Poly on April 5. The Dons struck out nine and walked just one. Senior Jonathan Abramson threw two innings of hitless baseball and Haden Hinkle posted one hitless inning. YOU ARE OUT: Junior Nik Balog is now fourth in all-time put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed 833 put outs and leads the West Coast Conference with 278 putouts this season. He needs just 29 more to move into third. AMONG THE LEADERS: Senior Pete Lavin leads the West Coast Conference in walks (21), stolen bases (14) and triples (4), second in hits (41) and is tenth in batting average (.339). Junior Adam Clear is third in the league with a .356 batting average, while first baseman Nik Balog leads the WCC in put outs with 278. TOP DOG: USF right-handed pitcher Garrett Luippold’s appearance in the fourth inning of the Dons’ game against No. 13 California on March 29th made him USF’s all-time appearances leader. With 89 appearances to his resume, Luippold moved past Patrick McGuigan’s 88 appearances from 2003-06. The senior has now totaled 92 career appearances. ROCKING THE VOTE: USF has played 11 games against ranked teams this season, living up to the preseason ranking of the seventh toughest non-conference schedule in the country. UP FOR GRABS: The Dons have started six different players in left field this season: Jared Denham, Bob Mott, Graeme Agate, Ted LeMasters, Mason Morioka and this past weekend, Tom Barry. Of the nine positions on the field, left field has seen the most change from game to game. Nik Balog and Stephen Yarrow have started every game at first and third bases this season, while Pete Lavin has held down centerfield in every game as well. Jason Mahood and Connor Bernatz have started at second and in right field for all but one game, while Higgs has started 24 games behind the plate and Morioka the other eight. TAKING THE SERIES: USF won it’s second series of the season after beating Pacific in two of the three games the teams played. The Dons also won two out of three against UC Davis this year as well. HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: The Dons are up to 10 home runs this season after Jason Mahood homered last week against Fresno State. Keep donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign! Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page.

RUNNING WITH THE PAC (10): San Francisco may play in the West Coast Conference, but the Dons will play 20 percent of their games this season against Pac-10 teams. USF has already played three times against Arizona, twice against California and once against Oregon and will face the Ducks again this week. The Dons will also make a trip to Stanford in mid-May. TWICE AS NICE: USF has totaled 56 doubles this season, with 12 different players having notched a two-base hit. Senior Stephen Yarrow leads the team with 10, Pete Lavin is on his heels with eight. WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 89 free passes this season. A total of 14 different players have drawn walks with Pete Lavin leading the way with 21 and Stephen Yarrow drawing 20. GOING THE EXTRA MILE: The Dons claimed their second extra inning win of the season on March 16 at No. 15 California. USF senior Stephen Yarrow fought off numerous pitches pitches, behind in an 0-2 count, before lacing a fastball into left field to score the eventual game-winning run. The Dons played in just three extra inning games last season and have already matched that total a third of the way into the 2011 season. GUEST APPEARANCE: Dons fans listening to the audio broadcast of USF’s game at California were treated to a special surprise when Giants’ announcer Duane Kuiper stopped by the radio booth to do an inning with Anthony D’Albora, the voice of the Dons. Kuiper spoke at the team’s crab feed kickoff dinner and pledged to keep in touch with the team. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: USF senior right-handed pitcher Matt Hiserman was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 8-13. During the Cal Baseball Classic this weekend, the senior hurler totaled a win and a save and gave up just two hits in nine innings of work. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning against UCSB to preserve the Dons’ 3-2 win and earned his first save of the season. On Sunday morning, Hiserman threw eight scoreless innings and gave up just two hits to lead USF it’s first shutout of the season by way of a 4-0 win against Louisiana-Lafayette. SAVE THAT GAME BALL: Two USF pitchers earned their first collegiate wins on the mound against UC Davis. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Zimmer earned his victory in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 27 after pitching seven innings and giving up just two runs on six hits, while striking out eight. Later that afternoon, freshman right-hander Alex Balog was a winner after throwing a hitless seventh inning. WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons. SAFE AT FIRST: Senior catcher Travis Higgs gets credit for the first hit of the 2011 season. His single to leftfield came during the fifth inning of the Dons’ first game of the season against UCLA.
