Spotlight on Community Impact: DR. CHAD MILLER
Dr. Chad R. Miller, professor of economic development, takes an engaged university approach to his research and the management of the Master of Science in Economic Development (MSED) program. An engaged university, generates and disseminates knowledge, which helps the community and, in turn, faculty and students learn from the community. This contrasts with the “ivory tower” university, where faculty and students are cut off from the community pursuing their own esoteric pursuits.
Taking this perspective, Dr. Miller has received more than $5 million in sponsored research, which was directed toward helping the community, funding graduate education for students, and giving students career-enhancing experience. He has received funding from such sources as the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Energy, Mississippi Development Authority, and the Appalachian Regional Commission. Examples of this work include establishing the Mississippi Defense Initiative, which develops the defense industry in the state, promotes defense innovation, and supports military installations and their communities.
Dr. Miller’s mainstream of research focuses on how transportation impacts economic development. This includes peer-reviewed research journal articles, such as “The Evolving Role of Rural River Ports as Strategic Economic Development Actors”, “Realizing the Economic Development Benefits of Short-line Railroads: The Case of Mississippi”, and “A Review of Public and Private Intermodal Railroad Development in the Memphis Region.” In recognition of his international reputation in this area, Dr. Miller was invited by the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board to join its Standing Committee on Economic Development and Land Use (AMS-50) and chair the Planning Committee for the 2024 TRB International Transportation and Economic Development Conference in Denver.
Working with the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Miller annually leads 10-15 community-funded student research projects. Typical studies include economic and fiscal impact studies, feasibility studies, labor workforce analysis, and strategic planning. An example of this was the Economic and Fiscal Impact Study of Mid-Delta Airport Hangar Improvements Greenville, Mississippi, which the community used to attract the investment needed to create 200 jobs through the attraction of Kearns Aerospace.
This external funding helps fund the education of graduate students in the MSED program and provides them with hands-on work experience. Over 30 students have had their graduate education paid for by the projects brought in by Dr. Miller. Funding support from Southern Miss Business allows three to four students per year to get economic development research experience while keeping the cost down for distressed communities, which need engaged university assistance. All these students interact with the communities, are named collaborators on the reports, and are expected to publicly present their findings.
The mantra of the MSED program is that we are not teaching students, we are developing future colleagues. This has created a strong mutually beneficial network with the economic development community. Alumni regularly contact the program seeking knowledge. This can be as simple as free advice or a quick no cost data pull, or more extensive studies, such as Mike Harvey of the Northwest Arkansas Council wanting to understand the emerging electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) industry and commissioning the Northwest Arkansas Council Advanced Air Mobility Opportunities Cluster Study. In return, alumni hire and mentor MSED students and help with research. This engagement with the economic development community creates a two-way flow of benefit.

Spotlight on Professorships: DR. KIMBERLY GOODWIN PARHAM BRIDGES ENDOWED CHAIR OF REAL ESTATE
William Parham Bridges Jr. and two other prominent real estate colleagues decided to promote real estate education in Mississippi by creating endowed professorships at the three largest state universities. Even though Parham Bridges was a graduate of Millsaps College, he established an endowed chair of real estate at Southern Miss. After serving in World War II, Parham Bridges began his real estate career by assuming management of Bridges Loan and Investment Company. Over time, he grew the company to provide services in land development, home building, mortgage lending, and insurance services across eight states. During the 1950s, Mr. Bridges served as a director for the National Association of Real Estate Boards and as president of the Mississippi Real Estate Association. Mr. Bridges maintained an active real estate license until his death in 2021 at age 93. A lifelong resident of Jackson, Parham Bridges practiced a balanced lifestyle that included flying airplanes and boating along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. So, it is fitting that Parham Bridges continues to impact real estate education at Southern Miss.
Dr. Kimberly Goodwin has held the Parham Bridges Endowed Chair of Real Estate since 2011. She credits this professorship for assuring that real estate remains a part of the curriculum at Southern Miss. “It’s a lot harder to erase a discipline from existence in bad times when you have the power of an endowed professorship behind it, so Parham Bridges is part of the reason students at Southern Miss still have several courses in real estate finance,” says Goodwin. Real estate is a huge part of the economy in Mississippi and an area that provides great career opportunities for our students. Dr. Goodwin explains, “Over the past 10 years, I have had many opportunities to speak to and work with members of the real estate industry in south Mississippi. They are all wonderful people who love their work, and I know how important it is to them to support real estate education at Southern Miss.”
According to Dr. Goodwin, the Parham Bridges Endowed Chair of Real Estate has also provided her with the financial support needed to help establish her research portfolio in housing markets and real estate investment. She has used the funds from the endowment to purchase technology and survey data that were the basis for one of her most known articles on language and connotation in real estate listings. In addition, the endowment allows her to attend the annual meeting of the American Real Estate Society (ARES) each year so that she can present her current research to colleagues from around the world and build her network with academic and industry professionals.
Regular attendance and networking at these meetings resulted in Dr. Goodwin’s push into a variety of leadership roles in the American Real Estate Society. After serving on the Board of Directors for five years, she was elected to another five-year leadership term that included program chair of the 2021 annual conference. Dr. Goodwin is currently serving as the 2022-23 ARES president. She has served as an editor of the Journal of Housing Research since 2015. Last year, Dr. Goodwin was selected as the ARES publications director, which involves strategic management and oversight of the organization’s seven scholarly journals. Her reputation as an internationally respected real estate scholar and leader led her to receive the Kinnard Young Scholar Award in 2021. This award recognizes one real estate scholar from anywhere in the world each year for exceptional research contributions during the first decade of their career. Dr. Goodwin also received the Louis K. Brandt Publication Award from Southern Miss Business in 2022.
RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY
Overall Research Productivity
Research productivity has increased overall since last year, including a 25% increase over last year in peer-reviewed journal articles.
By facilitating an engaging research environment, where interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and students is valued, our faculty members are better able to produce high-quality research outputs, such as peer reviewed journals, presentations, grants, book chapters, etc. As evidenced in the citations provided for each School, our faculty members often work together to extend knowledge by publishing in quality journals, presenting at conferences with student researchers, completing sponsored community projects, grant proposals, managing grant awards, serving on dissertation committees, and advising thesis students. SCHOOL
REFLECTIONS FROM A NEW SCHOLAR
By Dr. Bradley WintonAs faculty members, we are called to be scholarly. We are called to be involved with serious academic study. Serious academic study takes many forms. In its simplest form, we are measured by our peer-reviewed journal publications (PRJs), conference proceedings, and book chapters. My young career as a scholar includes a series of PRJs and conference proceedings that I am proud of. Each one represents a substantial amount of time, effort, and care. Each one provides clear evidence that I am taking care of my responsibility to add to the academic conversations in my particular field of study. But the call to serious academic study does not end with these traditional measures of scholarly success.
To be scholarly is also to help raise the College’s research profile through the advancement of knowledge in altruistic ways. In my corporate career, I found that the success of new hires, interns, and employees to be much more fulfilling. The life of a scholar provides opportunities to find this fulfillment on a whole new level by leading others in serious academic study. Does it make sense to take on the heavy lifting of an Honors student and thesis? Can I juggle the demands of a doctoral student’s dissertation committee with my own research? With so many other personal responsibilities, can I take on student research advisement?
The simplest answer is “yes.”
I said “yes” to an undergraduate scholar, who became my first Honors student in the very first class I taught here at Southern Miss, as he investigated his passion for scuba diving and marketing. Ka’Lon Duncanson stood out because of his glowing personality, his thirst for knowledge, and his genuine interest in research. After one brainstorming session about his thesis, we decided that we had something worth investigating. That brainstorming session culminated in a People’s Choice Award at the Student Research Showcase, a fully formed thesis, and a submission to his first academic conference. And he has already set his sights on a PRJ!
It is also “yes” to developing the research proficiency of our Ph.D. students as they battle the ups and downs of their dissertation
journeys. Forming scholars at the doctoral level provides a unique set of challenges. The interdisciplinary nature of each dissertation is both a challenge and a welcome distraction. The joy of this work is encapsulated in my first Ph.D. student committee. Not only was the dissertation interesting and practically important, but also provided another example of how helping with student research is as rewarding for the instructor as it is for the student. His knowledge of the subject, his drive to give back to both his profession and Southern Miss, and his ultimate recognition as a 2022-23 USM Graduate Hall of Fame honoree provide tangible evidence of the productivity and fulfilling nature of studentfocused scholarly activity.
As researchers, we often focus on our personal development and success. There are good reasons for this mentality to persist. Though I would argue that mentoring young scholars who have the drive to get their first conference proceeding, to attend their first academic conference, to finish their dissertation, or to write their first PRJ article should be equally important.
Personal scholarly success and student research mentorship are not mutually exclusive endeavors. Each “yes” to a student also adds to the body of knowledge we, as scholars, are called to progress. Each “yes” builds the confidence of the next generation of scholars. And each “yes” adds to the fulfillment of being both a faculty member and scholar.

RESEARCH QUALITY
In addition to the number of publications, publishing in highly selective research outlets helps increase recognition of our faculty researchers within their fields of study. The tables below include the journals in which faculty members published, along with several key metrics used to gauge research quality. It’s important to note that quality metrics can vary dramatically across disciplines, so focusing on a single metric can be problematic.
Journal Rankings
Elite Journal Publications
Elite peer-reviewed journals are defined in the College Policies and Procedures document as journals that meet any of the following criteria: (a) highly rated in the ISI Journal Citation Ratings, or Scopus rankings (SJR, IPP, SNIP, Citations), (b) Impact Factor, Eigenfactor, or Article Influence Score in the top 15% of journals in the discipline, or (c) acceptance rate of 10% or less. In addition, each School is responsible for compiling and updating an elite peer-reviewed journal list for each discipline within the School.
32% JOURNALS WITH IMPACT FACTOR OF 5.0 OR HIGHER
45% JOURNALS WITH GOOGLE SCHOLAR H5 INDEX SCORE OF 50 OR ABOVE
28% JOURNALS WITH CABELLS ACCEPTANCE RATE OF 15% OR LESS
Quality Metrics for Peer-Reviewed Journal Publications
Only journals that had metrics available through SSCI, SJR, and Web of Science are listed above. Bolded journals are considered highly selective.
Impact-Measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year
GS h5-index–If a journal has an h-index of y, the journal has y publications that have all been cited at least y times (reported by Google Scholar).
Acceptance Rate-Measure of a journal’s exclusivity (reported by Cabells)
CCI-Cabells Classification Index: Premier (top 10%); Significant (80-90%); High (<80%); Qualified (published >5 yrs); Novice (published <5 yrs)
ABDC Rating-Australian Business Deans Council: A* (best or leading journal in its field); A (highly regarded journal in the field or subfield); B (well-regarded journal in the field or subfield); C (recognized journal)
CABS Rating–Chartered Association of Business Schools: 4* (a world elite journal); 4 (a top journal); 3 (a highly regarded journal); 2 (a well-regarded journal); and 1 (a recognized journal)
Spotlight on Research Streams DR. WEI WANG
Hospitality and tourism research is known as an interdisciplinary field, which incorporates a variety of disciplines in application to the industry. This has shaped Dr. Wang’s research interests and led to an increased exposure to interdisciplinary theories, such as combining marketing and social psychology. Dr. Wang believes strongly that research should be designed and conducted with high rigor, using multi-method, multi-stage, and multi-perspective approaches. In addition, Dr. Wang looks for opportunities to work with student researchers and hopes her involvement can shed light on young scholars and motivate them to build higher research profiles. Dr. Wang’s biggest hope is to “understand global, contemporary tourism issues through rigorous methodology and collaborations to create innovative, state-of-art research works.”
Much of Dr. Wang’s research is interdisciplinary in nature, where she focuses on the connection points between tourism and other fields – including marketing, management, merchandising, sport, and pedagogy. She has coauthors from a variety of fields and with diversified backgrounds and believes that their knowledge and expertise add valuable insights and perspectives to each research study. Two of Dr. Wang’s primary research streams center around tourist behavior and destination and service marketing.
The highlighted project is part of a research stream focusing on tourist behavior. It considers the interplay of hospitality innovation with travelers’ perceptions and behavioral intentions. For this research, Dr. Wang collaborated with marketing colleagues Dr. A. Banu Elmadag Bas and Dr.
Kristina Harrison, along with Dr. Mehmet Okan, assistant professor of marketing at Artvin Coruh University. The research team conducted a qualitative study with two quantitative experiments to fully understand service robots’ interactions with customers when service is perceived negatively. The results of this first study revealed that service technology qualities, customer emotions, and customer service evaluations play vital roles in the service delivery. The research was presented at the Society for Marketing Advances Conference, where it was awarded Best Paper in Track.
In another research stream focusing on destination and service marketing, Dr. Wang works on a project examining how improvement of service provisions in hospitality businesses can create optimal customer experiences. Dr. Wang collaborated with Dr. Gregory Bradley, a management colleague, to develop a casino service quality scale. They used a nine-step multistage research process, incorporating perspectives from 1,000 casino guests, along with feedback from casino managers and executives. Overall, four casino service quality components were identified and validated as a holistic measurement: gaming service, restaurant service, hotel service, and cleanliness. The manuscript was published at a top-tier elite journal, Tourism Management, which has an impact factor of 12.879 and ranks as an A+ level journal (Australian Business Deans Council).
RESEARCH STREAM in Action

IDEA DEVELOPMENT
• Original idea was sparked while Dr. Wang and Dr. Bas were traveling together for a conference.
• General Topic Idea: Technology use in HTM
• What type of technology? (smartphones, kiosks, robots, etc. )
• What industry? (airlines, airports, restaurants, hotels, etc.)
• Developed Focus: The use of robots in restaurants
CONCEPTUALIZATION
• Research team formed: Wang, Bas, Harrison, Okan
• RQS developed and methods considered
• Requires qualitative and quantitative studies
• Scenarios created to see how participants would respond
• Pre-tests: Gathering general ideas from participants
DESIGN OF STUDY
• 1 Qualitative-convenient sample (colleagues, students, etc.)
• 1 Quantitative-Prodege (larger sample sizes)
• Intruments-adopt existing scales
• Variables:
• Incivility
• Anger (participant’s feelings)
• Service outcome (word of mouth, perceived service quality)
RESULTS AND OUTPUT
• Found a significant impact of the robot’s appearance on service quality and word-of-mouth behaviors. When incivility occurs, the more human it looks, the more people hated it.
• Presented at conference (SMA-Best Paper in Track award)
• Currently under review at International Journal of Hospitality Management (A* on ABDC, Impact=10.427)
• Research team exploring extension opportunities to build on this study
PUBLICATION IMPACT
Publication impact can be assessed by examining the work of faculty that consistently publish quality articles that inform the work of other scholars in the field. The scholar h-index captures both the quantity and quality of this kind of consistent scholarship (A scholar h-index of 10 means that a scholar has 10 publications with at least 10 citations each). The scholar h-index for the Top Southern Miss Business Scholars (as calculated by Google Scholar, Scopus, and Research Gate) are presented in the following three tables with measures based on the scope of the respective databases. All data are accurate as of October 24, 2022.
Top 10 Google Scholars
This includes total citation count and overall h-index scores. More recent activity is reflected in the citation count and h-index calculated since 2017.
Top Google Scholar-Cited Research Articles
The table includes all-time top cited articles with at least 500 citations. To identify newer research gaining traction, it also includes articles that have been published within the last 10 years with at least 100 citations.
Scopus h-index
Scores of 5 or Higher
This includes overall h-index scores, along with total citation counts
Research Gate Research Interest
Scores of 200 or Higher
Interest score considers engagement activities with the researcher’s listed outputs (community reads, recommendations, citations, mentions, etc.). Also included below is total citation count and h-index score.
