Before you jump in, go grab your post-it notes, your sharpie or that notebook you bought at the beginning of the pandemic when you were sure you’d take up journaling as a hobby, and jot down what inspires you. Mark the desserts, the tablescapes, venues and florals that speak to you. And, don’t forget to highlight the names of the people that make it happen. As always, the true heart of this magazine is the love showcased on each of its pages: the love our couples have for one another and the love our vendors have for what they do. So, without further adieu, allow us to share some truly magical moments and to introduce you to your talented creatives, entrepreneurs and party planning pros. Best, Maddie Poole, Editor @utahbridemag

FIRST, LET ME START by acknowledging the elephant in the room: 2020 was the year of the postponement. So, before I begin, let’s pour one out for the dresses bought, venues booked, save-the-dates sent, caterers hired and the laundry list of other plans cut short. However, if there’s one thing we learned last year, it’s that COVID-19 cannot stop creativity, ingenuity and, ultimately, resilience. And so, we turn with a sense of renewed hope and purpose toward the happier days that inevitably lie ahead. Now that that’s cleared up, it’s time to get back to business and have some fun. The months ahead will be a time of reflecting on the journey you’ve taken alongside your soon-to-be-spouse so that, together, you can craft a wedding experience that will remind your guests exactly why they love the two of you so darn much. This book is filled with the local pros, small business owners and the talented creatives that make the wedding world go round. And these dedicated geniuses are exactly who you want in your corner as you embark on a whole new world of pre-marital trial and error.

WEDDINGS ARE ALL about making memories that last a lifetime. I was married many years ago, and I remember how my mother went overboard for me, just the way I did for my own daughter. This time around, my husband—the father of the bride— decided he wanted to be intimately involved, and that meant including the groom-to-be. Well, you can imagine how difficult it was for four strongwilled adults plus the wedding planner to agree on anything. It created so much confusion that we finally had to set parameters. In the end, the dad and daughter selected the music for the church, reception and rehearsal dinner. And that was it. It ended up to be a great compromise, since both enjoyed music of all kinds, from classical to rock ‘n’ roll. And it may have saved the day. As for me, the wedding planner was my personal gift; she steered my daughter and me toward making good choices, not expensive mistakes. We found the wedding dress in Salt Lake City in one day, which was a natural choice, since Utah makes brides into stars and there is a wide variety
18 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
of gowns for every kind of ceremony. Our three days of wedding celebrations posed its own challenges, as we wanted each party at each venue to be absolutely perfect. The rehearsal dinner was a casual lobster bake, and the reception was a formal country club seated affair following the elegant church wedding. This sit-down dinner was preceded by a variety of food stations which served guests heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks while the bridal party and family were photographed for posterity. Writing all this reminds me of how exciting a wedding is, whether it’s a party for 25 or 225 people. Weddings are a celebration of life and of generations past, present and future. Hopefully, this magazine will help you capture that magic as you prepare for the most important day in your life: your wedding day. Utah Bride & Groom arose out of a dream I had years ago to offer readers the opportunity to curate their own special day—as ours was—devoting our time, talent and energy to help you create the wedding of your dreams.
Whether you select Utah for a destination wedding or opt for a large generational family and friends affair, we want to help ensure that you will have your perfect wedding with memories that last a lifetime. Margaret Mary Shuff, Publisher

Tried-and-true tips for making you the perfect blushing bride. SPEAK UP
Gown from Versailles Atelier Bridal, va-bridal.com
It’s your day. If there’s something about your look that you want to change, let your makeup artist know. “I recommend having a trial run with your artist three to five weeks ahead of your wedding day, so that the big day itself can go off without a hitch,” says Giddings. “Start looking for images of makeup that you really like and bring them with you on the day of your trial run.”
PERFECT YOUR PREP Arrive with your skin clean, exfoliated and moisturized so that your makeup artist is able to apply your cosmetics flawlessly.
SELECT YOUR STYLE To create the perfect look, consider your venue, gown and season. For example, a classic gown worn in a formal venue might coordinate best with an updo and a bold lip, while a boho gown in a more casual setting might pair best with loose curls and understated makeup. The most important factor here is your personal preference: it’s your wedding day, and you should look like you as much as possible.
TUNE UP YOUR TIMING You can expect hair and makeup to each take 30-45 minutes per bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride, and you should anticipate each to take 60-90 minutes for the bride. Giddings suggests factoring in extra time if you have only one photographer documenting both partners’ gettingready moments.
Giddings’ Dos + Don’ts • Do use individual false lashes. For a more natural look, skip the lash strip and go with individual false lashes. • Do highlight your brow bone. Top off your makeup look with highlighter on your brow bone to make your eyes really pop. • Do assign touch-up duty to a bridesmaid. Ask this trusted bridesmaid to carry a lipstick, concealer, powder and buffing brush or sponge in her bag. These quick touch-up products will ensure your makeup remains flawless all day long.
22 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
• Don’t wear SPF. If your photographers are using flash, avoid SPF, which will cause the flash to bounce off the skin and make you look washed out. •D on’t pile it on. Wedding photos are often taken in natural light. If you choose a heavy base, the makeup will look obvious—or worse—cakey. •D on’t go too trendy. The more faddish your look, the more dated your wedding photos will be in 20 years.

Wedding Spirits In between your ‘I dos’ and dancing shoes, cocktail hour serves the perfect icebreaker. “COCKTAIL HOUR IS all about bringing people together,” says Casey Metzger, founder of Top Shelf Services. According to Metzger, the key to creating camaraderie is giving your guests something they share in common, which is where thoughtfully personalized beverages become the stars of the show.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR COCKTAILS
BRING ON THE BEVIES “The key is hiring bartenders with the chops to get beverages flying off the shelves,” explains Metzger. “When it comes to cocktail hour, a couples’ number one concern is that the ceremony is going to end and their guests are going to swarm the bar only to wait around empty-handed.” Promptly delivering drinks with flavors that will turn heads is essential to a

remarkable guest experience. “That’s where the hours of prep work we do behind the scenes really come in handy. We’re ready to get the couple’s signature drinks in the hands of each and every attendee the moment the bride and groom exit the altar.”
MIX IT UP From the glassware to the garnish to each cocktail’s clever name, your bar service offers limitless opportunities to put your signature on the event and leave guests reminiscing about the evening for years to come. “My advice is to enjoy the process,” says Metzger. “This is your opportunity to offer your family and friends an unforgettable evening. At the end of the day, they’re all there to celebrate you. The more personalized, the better.” Top Shelf Services, topshelfutah.com
PHOTO (PORTRAIT) JON PINEAU, SPARE CHANGE CONSULTING
“First thing’s first, consider the journey you’ve been on as a couple and work backwards from there,” Metzger says. “Where did you meet? What vacations have you been on? What’s your favorite thing to do as a pair?” Answering these questions and getting to know your bartenders will help them create your meaningful, authentic cocktail combinations. Because this process can be lengthy, Metzger offers his clients their own wedding workbook. “Couples can take this notebook with them when they go out to the bar and jot down aspects of the experience they enjoy. Then, we can use that information to create cocktails that compile their absolute favorite flavor profiles.”

The High Society Party Band
Entertainment Made Easy Tips for hitting all the right notes as you pick your wedding band. THE PROSPECT of having entertainment at your wedding can be both exciting and overwhelming. Relax. As Michael Tobian, CEO and Owner of Utah Live Bands explains, if you plan this part of your event right, you’ll feel comfortable knowing the entertainment at your party will be fantastic.
will clear out. They will probably be less skilled musicians and they will approach the evening too casually. An experienced, professional wedding band will dress and act appropriately,” explains Tobian. “They will know how to follow a timeline and will move quickly between songs and contribute in a positive way to your evening.”
LISTEN AND LEARN
PERFECT YOUR PICKS
Without hearing entertainment live, it is difficult to know exactly what you are going to get. A great wedding band will have: 1. Glowing references from planners, vendors and former customers. 2. Multiple promo videos. Look for two types: live and produced. 3. Experience performing at weddings.
Pick the important songs and then trust your performers. An experienced wedding band will want your input so they can customize their set list to your preferences. But Tobian warns not to micromanage your band. Flexibility ensures a smooth evening.
“Bands that specialize in playing in bars and casual settings will allow too much time in between songs, and your dance floor
28 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
HIT THE DANCE FLOOR Ask the band to shorten your first dance to about one-and-a-half minutes unless you are having guests join in midway through the dance or you have a choreographed dance
prepared. A full three-minute song can feel like an eternity when all eyes are on you.
KEEP IT MOVING A great wedding band will keep people dancing by paying attention to what is happening on the dance floor. If the dancers look sparse, they will adjust what they are playing to mix things up. “If the dance floor was packed all night, I know we did our job,” Tobian says. Keep in mind the type of band you have hired. “If you have hired a jazz big band, that kind of music isn’t designed for the same kind of dancing that a highenergy, bass-thumping party band is, and a country band might encourage line dancing,” explains Tobian. “A party band will be the highest energy option and is the most likely to get your guests to kick off their shoes and go nuts.” Utah Live Bands, utahlivebands.com

Ring True to You Welcome to the dizzying, dazzling search for your perfect engagement ring. WONDERING HOW TO narrow down the search for a ring impeccably suited to your incomparable personal style? Sara Knight, O.C. Tanner Jewelers’ Associate Buyer, answers all the questions ringing in your ears.
For the glamorous bride who is a bit more demure, a classic ring is a perfect fit. What makes a ring classic? According to Knight, it’s all about a style’s ability to stand the test of time, like this elegant sixprong setting paired with a round diamond. “Timelessness calls on the theory that less is more and that a diamond can speak for itself without a lot of extra fluff from the setting,” says Knight.
hold up to daily wear. “One of the main reasons diamonds are used in engagement rings is their durability,” Knight explains. “If you are looking for an alternative to a diamond, we recommend sapphires or rubies because they can withstand the test of daily wear for years on end.” Diamond lovers also have vivid options. “There is also a fun world of colored diamonds that can be explored,” she says.
VINTAGE
EDGY
Certain styles stand the test of time, and if you plan to wear your ring for years to come, why not choose a vintage-inspired form that’s endured decades? The right finish is key to creating the vintage appearance you crave. “A finishing technique called milgrain—which peaked in the Art Deco era of the 1930s—provides an instant antique look to a mounting,” Knight explains. “The eternality of this look is undeniable, as its origins date back thousands of years and can be seen in ancient Asian pieces.”
Whether you call them edgy, punk, alternative or rock ’n’ roll, these rings and the brides they belong to stand out, loud and proud. Jade Trau’s tension style, double-banded setting and asymmetrical mounting, provides a bold twist on a triedand-true classic. “This ring tells me the wearer values timelessness but wants something with a touch of edginess and independence,” Knight says.
COLORFUL We don’t all fit into the mold and neither do these vibrant engagement rings. Bold and set apart from the rest, a colorful engagement ring is sure to make a statement. The key to selecting a gemstone, Knight says, is doing your research. Some stones are simply not durable enough to
30 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
MODERN An east-west setting contemporizes a timeless look, bringing refinement and character to an otherwise traditional ring. This sparkling standout is perfect for the minimalist bride. “An east-west setting provides a fun play on the architecture of the ring,” explains Knight. “It’s simplicity maintains a classic overall look, while its refreshing visual layout implores you to take a second glance.”

Location is everything when it comes to making your engagement photos unique. Consider locations where you most like to spend time with your partner. Louise and Kurt spend as much time together as possible snowboarding and enjoying the outdoors, so action shots are the perfect way to document their love. “The goal is to choose a beautiful location that speaks to you and your partner emotionally,” says Hooper. “Keep in mind professional photographers can be one of your best resources when it comes to selecting a location, so make sure you communicate with your photographer.”
KEEP IT CANDID
Express Yourself Say “I do” to being you in your engagement shoot.
BEFORE YOU POSE for what’s sure to feel like a million photos on your wedding day, you’ll get to spend some time in front of the lens for another very important photo session: your engagement shoot. Engagement shots are the perfect keepsakes capturing your time as a pair right before marriage, and the photos can be used for everything from your wedding website to your social media feed. Making your photo shoot personal to you is key. Photographer Trevor Hooper shares his secrets for ensuring your personality shines through in your shots.
32 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
It’s easier said than done, but when it comes to capturing your love, candid moments make the best photos. The more at home you are in your location, the more comfortable you’ll act for your photographer. “Helping people feel at ease leads to much more natural candid images,” explains Hooper. “Remember: this is all about capturing your special connection. While there will always be some posing, candid photos are the best way to visually express your love story.”
HAVE FUN Above all, embrace your connection as naturally as possible on camera. Your session should translate the best parts of your relationship so that each and every photo in the gallery can be cherished for a lifetime.

Suit Yourself Clothier Cody Hoppes and photographer Heather Nan share in-the-know insight for picture-perfect prêt-à-porter. TAILOR YOUR LOOK “Menswear is ever-evolving,” says Hoppes, sales manager with UWM Men’s Shop in Salt Lake City. Photographer Heather Nan agrees, but points out one timeless component: tailoring. “Tailoring is key when it comes to formal menswear,” says Nan, who has snapped countless dapper grooms. That doesn’t mean renting is out of the question, Nan says. “Rentals have stepped up to get men better suited. They offer slimmer choices and more options than ever before. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to try out options.” And if you’re opting for fast fashion in lieu of haute couture, Nan advises prioritizing flawless tailoring.
EXPRESS YOURSELF “Don’t be afraid to add subtle hints of your personality,” says Nan. “Consider your pocket square or your shoes prime opportunities to bring some individuality to your ensemble.” This year, Hoppes predicts patterns will make a comeback. “Patterns offer people an opportunity to show off their individual style,” he says. “People are ready to get dressed up and stand out in a crowd, and we’re excited to make it happen.”
CONSIDER THE CONTEXT What to wear? “It all comes down to what kind of celebration you’re having,” Nan explains. “The key is to consider location and season.” A black tie affair calls for a tuxedo or a formal suit, but a more casual occasion can lend itself to a great sport coat sans tie. “My favorite textures and tones right now are rich, saturated browns during fall or winter and blue hues for the spring and summer,” says Hoppes. “There is something so timeless about a blue suit. It will never be out of style.”
STAND OUT If you choose to go the casual route, Hoppes is excited to introduce you to the Safari suit. “Not only is it a perfect summer staple item, but it can be paired with pants in any pattern imaginable,” he says. Pattern offers grooms the ability to make a statement, according to Nan. “When it comes to groomsmen, sometimes I think it’s better for them to have coordinated looks and for the groom to stand out with his own individualized ensemble,” she says. “Obviously there should be some level of coordination among the men, but

adding a little special something like a different pocket square, stand-out shoes or a distinctly toned tie can add visual interest to the altar.”
LOOK FORWARD So, what’s on trend this year? According to Hoppes, it’s all about bold, saturated warm tones. “This is going to sound crazy, but brown is going to have a huge moment. In the right tone, it can be a stunning suit or sport coat. We’re not talking about your dad or grandpa’s brown,” he says. The bottom line, Hoppes explains, is talking to an expert about exactly what you want. “We’re here to make you look perfect on your wedding day. Bring us your ideas and we can work together to perfect your look.”
PICTURE-PERFECT GROOMSWEAR TIPS FOLLOW SUIT ■ The width of your tie should be related to the width of your lapel. ■ The end of your tie should hit the top of your belt buckle. ■ For a three-button jacket, sometimes button the top button, always button the middle and never button the bottom. ■ For a two-button jacket, always button the top button. ■ When you stand up, button your jacket. When you sit down, unbutton your jacket. ■ Always pair a brown belt with brown shoes and a black belt with black shoes.
TUX TIPS ■ Skip the belt with formal trousers. ■ Tuxedos require a bow tie or no tie. ■ If you wear a cummerbund, the pleats face up. ■ If you wear studs, match them to your cufflinks. ■ Don’t forget your pocket square! The
Suite Life Local experts Sean Bradley, Mikyla Manu and Jenner Lehr offer timeless advice on assembling your celebration’s paper goods ensemble. Photographs by ADAM FINKLE & MIKYL A MANU
PREPARE PUNCTUALLY “Your wedding is a life event that will continue to have significance for generations, and the tangible manifestations of your celebration are so important,” says Sean Bradley, owner and director of Tabula Rasa. To ensure the preparation process goes off without a hitch, he emphasizes the importance of timing. “You can never start too soon, but you can often start too late,” says Bradley, who recommends ordering each and every paper product at least six months before you want it to be in your guests’ hands.
ASK THE EXPERTS “There is a formal traditional structure to the wording and phrasing of invitations,” explains Bradley. The key is to find the perfect balance between aesthetically pleasing and informative. “We give that advice and guidance at no additional charge. Trust a professional who has the experience and expertise to guide you in how to phrase your paper suite properly,”

he says. According to Mikyla Manu, owner of Ink & Press Co., key phrases can help indicate the formality of your event to invitees. “There are definite rules and best practices when it comes to creating your wording. For example, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith request the honor of your presence’ implies a black tie occasion, whereas ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith invite you to celebrate the marriage of’ is indicative of a less formal affair.”
PERSONALIZE YOUR PRINTS Experts can offer advice on the touches that will make your paper goods stand out, Manu explains. “I recommend clients tell their

story in the details, like envelope liners, vintage postage or a monogram that can be used on their websites,” she says. Another way to personalize your paper goods is by adding unexpected elements to your suite. “We’re seeing more texture and use of color in the actual paper selection versus the ink colors,” says Jenner Lehr, digital marketing director for Ann Elizabeth Print Studio. “We’re finding that people are eager for a tactile experience with everything being digital.”
42 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
OVER ORDER “Under-ordering is the ultimate no-no,” says Bradley. He believes purchasing between 10-25 extra invitations will ensure that you’re perfectly prepared. “When ordering, I highly recommend ordering an additional 10-15 percent more than the planned mail-to count,” says Lehr. “We find that couples’ guest lists continue to change throughout the wedding planning process,” she explains. “Plus, it doesn’t hurt to have extra for keepsakes.”

Michelle & Wesley’s Afterparty for the Ages After months of planning and prepping, you’ve finally said your ‘I dos’ and made your way back down the aisle. Now it’s time to celebrate. Event veteran Michelle Cousins shares her secrets for creating a night to remember for your nearest and dearest. Photographs by CAMERON CL ARK
44 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
TELL YOUR STORY “Your guests are there to celebrate your love and your journey as a couple,” says Michelle Cousins, owner of Michelle Leo Events. “The best way to create a memorable event for your loved ones is to tell the story of your love.” For example, the groom, Wesley, is from Tennessee, so Cousins made sure to incorporate whiskey into the cocktail menu.
MAKE MEMORIES “A photo booth is the perfect way to make sure your guests have a personalized souvenir from your event,” Cousins says. Not only did Michelle and Wesley include a photo
booth for their guests, but they also added personalized koozies that their friends and family still use. “I’m all about finding the little details that tell a couple’s story because that’s what guests will take away from the event,” Cousins explains. “The key is finding things your friends and family will really connect with, so instead of turning to Pinterest or Instagram to find inspiration, look inward. Consider who you are as a person and who you are as a couple, and then make those the key details.”
ADD SOME SPARKLE “Whether you’re 5 or 55, sparklers bring out the kid in all of us,” says Cousins. “They’re such a fun addition to a send-off, and the guests absolutely love them. Michelle and Wesley got married on the Fourth of July, and the sparklers were such a fantastic way to keep the evening’s fireworks going all night long.”
KICK OFF YOUR HEELS “You’ve planned this incredible party for your friends and family, and sometimes a wedding

dress isn’t the most comfortable thing to dance the night away in,” Cousins says. After you’ve officially tied the knot, Cousins recommends kicking off your heels and changing into a second, more comfortable bridal look. The newlyweds added an extra special touch to Michelle’s reception look with personalized jean jackets for the bride and her bridesmaids. “Michelle and Wesley are such a fun, casual couple, so the jean jackets felt so true to them as a pair,” Cousins says.
KEEP THE PARTY MOVING Work with your wedding planner to ensure smooth transitions from one wedding day event to the next. “Your

cocktail hour should be just that—an hour—and should flow seamlessly into your reception, where there should be, at most, 30 minutes between courses,” Cousins explains.
OFFER AFTER-PARTY HORS D’OEUVRES After the plated dinner, Cousins shined a light on Wesley’s Tennessee roots once again with a tasting menu that included fried chicken sandwich sliders. “Your guests have spent an evening working up their appetites on the dance floor,” says Cousins. “Take Wesley’s cue and offer them a personal favorite in the form of a late-night food station.”

Ann Elizabeth Print Studio AN INVITATION sets the tone for the celebration. It whets your appetite and elevates anticipation. And when it’s handcrafted by experts, it’s a gesture of love you can hold in your hand. The artists at Ann Elizabeth Print Studio create meaningful invitations. “We work to learn everything we can about our clients, from their likes and dislikes, to their pets’ names and how they organize their spice drawers,” says Ann Jager, owner. “Every detail matters when it comes to designing their custom suites.” Once the product is approved and ready for production, a printing specialist works closely with the design team to make sure everything is perfect. Then, every single piece goes through a rigorous quality check. “We’re very hands-on throughout the entire process,” says Jager. “This may sound crazy, but humans are actually operating the machines.
The design team touches, feels and visually approves every piece. Printing is truly a craft.” Jager wants her clients to truly enjoy the tactile experience. “Paper is made from all types of fibers including cotton, wood, bamboo and plants,” says Jenner Lehr, customer service specialist and director of digital marketing. “Some particles will leave uneven bumps or leftover specks.” Jager encourages her clients to embrace the imperfections. Planning an event can be stressful, so the team does everything they can to make the design experience seamless, easy and fun. “Our customer service specialists are warm and responsive,” says Lehr. “Our clients feel like friends by the end of the process.” If you want to make a statement for your next gathering, begin with a customized invitation.

Ask the Expert W HAT’ S A H EA D : Textured invitation suites. Whether the texture is a result of paper itself, dimensional printing methods— thermography (raised ink), letterpress (pressed ink), embossing (raised impressions without ink, or debossing (pressed impressions without ink)— or adding a dripped wax seal, twine or vellum to the final invite, texture and tactile sensation are important.
E XC ITE D A B O U T : Since custom postage is no longer a thing, we’re really excited to see more clients using vintage postage stamps as an alternative. Vintage postage stamps are the perfect way to add a personal touch to a paper suite, giving an envelope character and surprise.
F R E SH ID EA S : Design trends continue to ebb and flow, so save or pin what you love online. For example, a traditional-style invitation could be refreshed with modern typography or, instead of the traditional natural white paper with colored ink, try using colored paper.

Angela & Steven ST. REGIS, DEER VALLEY, JUNE 22 Photographs by MORGAN OLSEN AT INFRAMES PHOTOGRAPHY
A DM DEBUT A mutual friend introduced Angela and Steven at City Creek Center, and when the two parted ways, Steven couldn’t get Angela out of his head. Later that evening—in keeping with millennials everywhere—Steven made his move by following Angela on Twitter and sliding into her DMs. Two-and-a-half years later, Angela was nearly finished unwrapping gifts at the couple’s baby shower. When she opened up the final present, she was shocked to discover her dream ring inside. Angela looked up to see her beau on one knee, asking her to be his wife.
MOUNTAIN AMOUR When Angela started planning her wedding, she considered a beachfront affair in her home state of California. After giving it more thought, she realized that everybody takes trips to the beach; it’s much less common to travel to the mountains. Angela wanted to give her friends and family a unique opportunity, so she decided on Park City and chose the St. Regis for its lift rides, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding alpine peaks.
A PEARL-TONED PARTY When Angela sat down with Mara Mazdzer, owner of Fuse Weddings and Events, she knew she wanted an all-white wedding.

Together, the pair collaborated to create an event that checked all of Angela’s boxes: simple, glamorous, moody, romantic and monochromatic. The duo added contrast with hints of gold that elevated the celebration’s feeling of sophistication.
HOME SWEET HOME Angela and Steven are both Utah transplants, so they chose to honor their birthplaces by bringing elements from each location into the ceremony. Angela purchased a dress and veil from California because she was born and raised in Los Angeles, while Steven chose the couple’s rings from a local business in Kansas City. Incorporating references of their hometowns into their nuptials helped personalize the celebration and make it unique to the pair.
A GRAND ENTRANCE Angela decided against first-look photos, instead allowing Steven to view his bride for the first time—along with everyone else—as Angela’s mother walked her down the aisle. Before creating that special moment between the couple, the pair made sure to give their one-and-a-halfyear-old son his own opportunity to shine. Performing as his dad’s best man, the toddler made his way down the aisle in a toy Bentley operated by his grandfather.
TOUCHING TUNES The first time Angela flew to Missouri to meet Steven’s family and friends, her future hubby treated her to his own rendition of “Stingy” by Ginuwine. Naturally, the two felt it was a fitting choice for the soundtrack to their first dance. Later, during the reception, Angela opted out of a fatherdaughter dance and instead chose to pay homage to her culture by performing a traditional dance with her El Salvadorian mother to upbeat cumbia music.

Eli & Skylar LOG HAVEN & SQUARE KITCHEN, SALT LAKE CITY, SEPT. 28 Photographs by FLYING GULL PHOTOGRAPHY
LOVE AT FIRST SWIPE Eli, an attorney, and Skylar, a med student, experienced a very modern meet-cute on Tinder. “Skylar was on a one-hour layover at the Salt Lake City airport when we matched,” Eli explains. After spending days chatting with one another online, the pair decided it was finally time to meet in person, so they made the leap and flew out to meet each another. After that, the pair’s first official date was in Cleveland, where they met up to attend a wedding. Little did they know, they’d soon be hosting nuptials of their own.
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU After three years of dating, Eli decided it was time to tie the knot. “Eli left ‘12 Days of Christmas’ gifts on my porch and acted like he had no idea who was delivering these mysterious packages. He even pretended like he was helping me figure out who the anonymous gifter was,” recalls Skylar. But, by the twelfth day, the charade was up—the final gift was a ring.
MOUNTAIN MIMOSAS “We wanted to have a brunch wedding at a venue where we could show off the mountains to our out-of-town guests,” Eli says. Because the two chose to tie the knot outdoors at Log Haven in order to capture Utah’s fall beauty, they chose subtle tones for their color palette in order to add to—rather than distract from—the autumn hues. They created a classic, minimalist atmosphere by cloaking the event in shades of black, white and antique gold.
60 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
THE AFTER PARTY “We held a reception in the evening, and some friends who run a catering business called Island Hopper catered the celebration as a wedding gift,” Eli says. To keep the party going, the pair also served drinks crafted by Copa Bar Service. In the end, the couple enjoyed planning their celebration and hosting friends, but according to Eli, all of that faded away when he looked at his new groom. “Skylar is the best person I know and the best person I could have ever dreamed of meeting. The only thing I really remember with much clarity from that day is how lucky I felt that it was happening at all.”

Chari & CJ RIVER BOTTOMS RANCH, MIDWAY, SEPT. 27 Photographs by BRANSON MA XWELL
TEAMING UP Chari, a track and field Olympian who competes for Team USA in the heptathlon, and CJ, who works for Booster Fuels—a gas and oil company—met in college as fellow athletes on the Utah State University track and field team. The two became best friends and, after spending so much time together, fell in love. The couple has been together ever since.
DINNER, DRINKS & I DO After seven years together, CJ decided it was finally time to pop the question. The couple was dating long distance at the time, and they decided to meet up in Utah. They went to La Caille for dinner,
62 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
and when they stepped outdoors after their meal, Chari was greeted by a camera crew outside the restaurant. As the pair walked toward the garden’s bridge, Chari could hear a musician playing one of the duo’s favorite songs, and CJ asked his future wife to dance. Their last stop was at the gazebo, where the pair kept dancing before Chari noticed rose petals falling all around her. When she turned around, she realized that she was surrounded by her friends and family, who looked on as CJ got down on one knee and proposed. After Chari said yes, the pair—accompanied by their nearest and dearest—headed back to La Caille, where they shared drinks and desserts and celebrated their engagement.

THE BIG DAY The pair became smitten with the venue, River Bottoms Ranch, at first sight. “We loved it the second we saw it,” Chari says. “Everything was perfect, from the inside of the barn to the incredible scenery outside.” In order to achieve the intimate, romantic and mountain-inspired wedding of their dreams, they chose hues of blush, taupe, champagne, ivory and sage to give the celebration a natural, light and romantic aesthetic. One of the most memorable inclusions for Chari was John Beck, the couple’s officiant. “He’s one of our all-time favorite people and has been in CJ’s life since he was ten years old,” says Chari. “He’s been there for us throughout our entire relationship and was the perfect person to marry us.”
THE FIRST DANCE “Our first dance was to ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheeran,” Chari says. The pair added a personal touch to the performance by choreographing the dance themselves, and they had so much fun creating that special moment. “The dance was simple and wonderful, and we still do it every single time that song comes on. It’s such a sweet song, and it illustrated our relationship so perfectly.”
SPECIAL MOMENTS After 11 years together, the pair wanted to create a story that felt unique and personal to them, so they included special, personalized touches. They served Aggie Ice Cream—a fan favorite at their alma mater, Utah State. The bride also attached her garter to a football, which she threw across the room to her groom. They also added a fun experience by trading in traditional ring bearers for “ring security,” fully equipped with sunglasses, earpieces and personalized name tags.

After graduation, the duo reconnected while Layne was living in New York City and Vince, who was working for the Minnesota Timberwolves at the time, was in town for a game. They had dinner together and stayed in touch, which led to the pair starting a long distance relationship.
ONE FINE MORNING After the pair—who had been friends for a decade— had dated for four years, Vince decided it was time to pop the question. He surprised Layne with a trip to New York, where the duo spent the first half of the trip in the Hamptons seeing Layne’s favorite musician, Donavon Frankenreiter. Then, they headed to Manhattan, where they visited Layne’s friends and went to their favorite spots around the city. “He proposed in front of my old apartment in West Village, and then took me to eat breakfast at Tiffany’s,” Layne explains. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s is my favorite movie, and I truly felt like Holly Golightly. It was the most magical week of my life.”
TIME AND PLACE “We chose The Lodge at Blue Sky for our venue,” says Layne. “The day after we got engaged in NYC, we came back to Utah and the next morning we had breakfast at High West Distillery at Blue Sky Ranch. We started looking around the site and saw Blue Sky’s lodge. The moment we arrived, I fell in love with the venue.” In that moment, Layne realized this was the perfect place to host an intimate weekend with her closest friends and family. In keeping with

Blue Sky’s color scheme, the pair chose sky blue and navy. According to Layne, “sky blue perfectly mirrored the beautiful, picturesque clouds and navy felt like such an elegant addition.”
EASY ELEGANCE “For our wedding design, we went for laid back elegance,” says Layne. “The setting at Blue Sky is enough to take your breath away, so I wanted everything to feel pretty natural. We utilized the theme of the horseshoe throughout because they symbolize luck for my family; we have one in every room in our house, and I wear a pendant around my neck that Vince bought for me.” In addition to horseshoes, the pair included crystals as a spiritual touch. “Crystals were our way of bringing out our personalities,” says Layne. “It was so important that we incorporated things that are special to us.”
THE FIRST DANCE “Our first dance was to ‘Shine’ by Donavon Frankenreiter because we saw him sing live in Montauk a few days before Vince proposed, and it just became our song,” says Layne. “I also had a mini bridal shower in Park City, where we got to see him sing last spring.”

REAL WEDDINGS
Elizabeth & Mike THE LODGE AT BLUE SKY, WANSHIP, SEPT. 26 Photographs by HEATHER NAN
FROM HINGE TO HITCHED In Elizabeth’s own words, the pair met “how all the kids are meeting these days:” on the dating app Hinge. The duo matched in 2018, but didn’t make it official for a full year after they made the connection. Elizabeth and Mike’s first date was in their home state of Illinois at a cozy speakeasystyle bar in Chicago.
A VERY PARK CITY PROPOSAL On a ski trip to Park City, during breakfast the morning of a spa day Mike had planned at the St. Regis, Elizabeth mentioned, not so subtly, that “Park City would be the best place to get engaged.” They’d already been on the vacation for a couple of days, and she figured if he’d been planning to pop the question, he would have done so already. Little did she know he’d saved the best for last. The pair got massages and then headed to the Mountain Terrace to grab a drink. There, to Elizabeth’s surprise, Mike got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. She, of course, said yes.
TRADING UP As all 2020 brides know, the year was a period of planning and re-planning weddings, and Elizabeth and Mike’s nuptials were no exception. “We had planned a November wedding in Detroit with 350 people and clearly that wasn’t going to happen,” Elizabeth says. With the help

of Rachael Mayo, owner of Rachael Ellen Events, the duo regrouped and opted to scrap it all and invite only their nearest and dearest to the Utah Mountains for a micro destination wedding. According to Mayo, “They swapped their plans and traded them in for an unforgettable mountain experience. Their guests enjoyed a weekend of horseback riding, fly fishing and hiking followed by a cowboy Yurt rehearsal dinner and a romantic mountain wedding celebration.” Elizabeth was over-the-moon with the results. “This ended up feeling like Plan A, even though it was our COVID Plan B,” she says.
ALPINE I DOS The pair’s ceremony took place at the Blue Sky Tavern, a beautiful secluded ranch offering the mountains’ changing fall foliage as an unforgettable backdrop. “We created a romantic floral aisle and birch arch for their religious ceremony, complete with a live string quartet,” says Mayo. “Then, the guests moved down to the Arena Stable for signature cocktails, axe throwing and hors d’oeuvres. Elizabeth and Mike were welcomed to cocktail hour, when they danced for the first time as husband and wife before celebrating with their guests. A multicourse meal followed, during which their friends and family toasted the newlywed couple.”
DESIGN DETAILS For the table design, Elizabeth and Mike kept everything romantic with only a hint of rustic notes. They chose modern glassware and flatware, a romantic lace design charger plate, blue napkins and a beautiful classic crest menu card in a monochrome blue shade. These modern yet classic elements balanced an organic, romantic floral garland runner and taper candles.

Kylie & Alex A-FRAME HAUS, HEBER CITY, SEPT. 8 Photographs by AUTUMN NICOLE
STUDY BUDDIES Kylie (a content creator for brands like Nike, LG and Bose) and Alex (who works in HR and as a recruiter for a medical staffing agency) found love in a surprising place: the University of Utah library during finals week. The pair sat next to one another while cramming for exams and have been sitting side by side ever since.
for photography—headed to the beach at sunrise to capture photos along the coastline. To Kylie’s surprise, Alex had a very special moment planned for their photo shoot. When they arrived on the beach, Alex got down on one knee and asked Kylie to be his wife. She had no idea it was coming and enthusiastically exclaimed “yes!”
AUTUMN AT THE A-FRAME TI AMO The pair spent three years together before Alex decided it was time to seal the deal. On a trip to Positano, Italy, the couple—who bonded over a shared love

To achieve the intimately elegant affair Kylie had always dreamed of, the pair decided to host their closest friends and family at the A-Frame Haus, a cozy cabin nestled in the quiet mountains of Heber
City. Working alongside Braelynn Tuitupou of Belle Bodas Events, Kylie chose a neutral color scheme with carefully placed pops of burgundy that perfectly complemented the Scandinavian-inspired lodge.
REAL LOVE BABY Years ago, at the pair’s first concert together, the couple danced the night away to songs by Father John Misty. So, when it came time to select the song that would play for their first dance, they felt his music was the perfect way to tell the story of their journey as a couple. In front of an audience of their nearest and dearest, the newlyweds enjoyed their first dance together to “Real Love Baby” by none other than Father John Misty.

REAL WEDDINGS
Allie & Rhett WALKER FARMS, LINDON, OCT. 13 Photographs by HEATHER NAN
A LONG TIME COMING Allie, a master esthetician, and Rhett, a manager for Craig Peay Construction, first met when they were only 15 years old. Rhett was close friends with Allie’s cousin and the two became friends, but wound up parting ways until they reconnected at age 18. Once the pair rekindled their friendship, they started dating and have been together ever since. Rhett took Allie to a music festival for their first date. According to Allie, it was the best first date she’d ever had. “No wonder I married him,” she says.
BBQ BLISS After five-and-a-half years together, Rhett decided it was finally time for the duo to seal the deal. On May 24, 2020—at a barbecue hosted by Allie’s family—Rhett got down on one knee and popped the question in front of an audience of his soon-to-be bride’s entire family.
THE BIG DAY After a four-month engagement, Allie and Rhett tied the knot at Walker Farms in Lindon. “I knew it was the perfect place right when I walked in,” says Allie. “I looked up and saw the most beautiful chandelier.” Her favorite part of the venue? “Definitely the bridal room,” she responds. “It has the most gorgeous pink touches.” In order to achieve the boho, moody atmosphere the couple wanted for their nuptials, the pair chose champagne, soft pink and burnt orange for their wedding day color scheme.

ALL IN THE DETAILS Allie worked with florist Artisan Bloom to make sure that the design details incorporated aspects of the couple’s relationship journey throughout the celebration. She added her favorite personal touch by incorporating pheasant feathers into the floral design. “My family is made up of hunting enthusiasts,” she explains, “so that was a nice way of including them on our wedding day, just like Rhett included them the day he proposed.”
MENU MUST-HAVES “One of our favorite aspects of our menu was the steak served by Magleby’s Catering,” says Allie. “We also had beef medallions, mashed potatoes and sugared carrots, which were delicious.” The couple selected a bourbon vanilla cake from Carrie’s Cakes to top it all off.

WHEN IT COMES to using bold geometric shapes, striking tones and daring details to create an unforgettable design, the team at Michelle Leo Events believes the sky is the limit. Their leader, Michelle Cousins, shares her tips and tricks for creating an out-of-the-box celebration sure to be the talk of the town.
GO BIG “Colors, shapes and patterns can breathe life into your events,” says Cousins. “It’s your day, so don’t be afraid to express yourself.” For this party, Cousins opts for unexpected wedding hues, a choice that she says can pay off in a major way. “People tend to shy away from tones like black and yellow because they’re not necessarily traditional,” Cousins explains, “but when you showcase them in a form that complements your venue, they create a memorable aesthetic that’s sure to make your wedding stand out.”
START STRONG “An invitation suite is your guests’ first impression of your event, so it’s important for it to speak volumes far beyond the written details,” Cousins says. She encourages clients to work with a graphic designer to incorporate the overall mood of their celebration into the look and feel of the paper goods. For this celebration, Cousins worked with Twelve30 Creative to compose modern-contemporary imagery, from the stationery to the monogram. “We took inspiration for the monogram from the venue’s logo, which plays a prominent role in the architecture of the space.”
FAVOR FAR-OUT FASHION “You shouldn’t have to pull back on certain elements simply because you opted to be adventurous in other areas,” Cousins explains. “When done correctly, bold pieces complement one another.” The chartreuse pantsuit by JXA Fashion is a stand-out, but it elevates, not overshadows, surrounding elements.

SET YOUR SITE The key to creating a city-chic style is finding the balance between masculine and feminine shapes then using them to reflect the urban elements of your chosen venue. The architectural elements of the Hardware Apartments’ rooftop—such as the arched floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for an expansive view of the city’s skyline—form the inspiration for Cousins’ use of angular components like the ceremony benches.
BRING IN BOTANICALS Rather than opting for traditional florals, Cousins works alongside Artisan Bloom to err on the side of foliage that has a sense of belonging in a downtown locale. “Think about what you’d expect

to see in a metropolitan space,” Cousins explains. “You’re much more likely to see a potted plant in green or other neutral shades being used to brighten up an urban environment.” To create a dynamic tablescape, she shines the spotlight directly on the floral design as it floats high above the place settings, providing contrast against the sharp lines of pink rocks chosen to mimic stones found in nearby fire pits.

Sustainably Sophisticated A newly modernized space sets the scene for a refreshing, contemporary celebration. Photographs by HEATHER NAN

PART OF PARK CITY’S magic is its ability to meld classic with contemporary. “Embrace tradition, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box” is the top tip Meredith Parsons gives for keeping a celebration fresh within Deer Valley’s old world atmosphere. The Bluebird Event Destination Management founder teams with her favorite cast of creatives to show off local blooms, au courant hues and the alpine majesty of Silver Lake Village. She shares her secrets to creating an avant-garde Park City party.
LOOK LOCAL For this project, Parsons places an emphasis on utilizing locallysourced design elements that seamlessly blend into the alpine environment. For the sake of sustainability and belonging, floral designer Sarah Winward goes above and beyond to acquire local blooms. “The soul of this community is tied to the outdoors, and we set out to celebrate that,” explains Parsons. “By using tumbleweeds and foliage native to Utah, we were able to incorporate elements of the high-mountain desert

that gave the overall design a sense of place.” Not only does the floral design reflect the locale, it also balances the prominent concrete architecture utilized throughout the property. “I chose these specific botanicals because of the way their structural elements complement the streamlined, angular look of the venue,” explains Parsons.
CELEBRATE YOUR SPACE Parsons encourages couples to meld their vision with their venue by taking cues from the space. “The inspiration for this photo shoot was the venue itself,” Parsons says. “We took one look at Goldener Hirsch’s expanded space, and knew we had to highlight the modern design elements of the renovation while honoring the tradition of the hotel, as it’s a real Park City staple.”
KEEP IT CURRENT The modern, minimalistic design of the venue fosters contemporary artistic choices. For the ceremony, Parsons opts for Lucite chairs that give an of-

the-minute edge to the neutral locale. The concrete wall provides sleek lines and a minimal background, which keeps the focus on the couple and the floral installation floating above them. For the table settings, Parsons chooses masculine, contemporary flatware that offers a modern flair.
CREATE CONTRAST What is the key to making dark, moody tones work in wedding design? According to Parsons, the trick is creating balance through contrast. She builds depth and character with high-contrast hues offset with neutral tones and soft textures. “For example, the dark blown-glass candlesticks prop up neutral candles, while the glossy black table finds its counterpart in the fluffy, airy clematis performing as the table’s star florals.” Embracing negative space, Parsons allows the venue’s clean lines and bold colors to create visual interest.

YOUR WEDDING DAY is a celebration overflowing with love, and a touch of romance captured with European flair is perfectly apropos—even in Utah’s scenic mountains. Sarah Tucker, owner of Marae Events, offers her tips and tricks for bringing European style to your stateside affair.
TABLE YOUR TONE Tucker creates an alfresco tablescape where
classic European design meets contemporary details. In the center of the table, asymmetrical floral arrangements flow from rustic ceramic vases which fill the space between taupe-toned taper candles. Atop the white ceramic plates rest earthy raw paper menus featuring deckled edges and a minimalistic font, reminiscent of the invitation suite. orange. The star of the show is the base layer upon which each vignette is perched: textured, lacy table linens which provide visual interest and meld the tablescape’s modern elements with its traditional roots.
CAST YOUR COLORWAY With soft pinks, peaches and greens, this celebration is rooted in romance. “We opted for predominantly delicate tones,” Tucker explains. “Then, we used unexpected shades like black, orange and yellow for vibrant pops that provided contrast in the styling.” Decorating with both fruits and flowers offers both color and texture to a design. “Use of varying textures can breathe life into an event,” says Tucker. “Utilizing a wide range of textiles such as velvet, linen and silk can create optical and tactile intrigue in a party’s design.”
PAINT A PICTURE Tucker breathes enchanting European countryside style to River Bottoms Ranch by creating assorted vignettes throughout the property. Using

both indoor and outdoor spaces, Tucker makes the expansive venue feel cozy and intimate by creating individually defined scenes. For example, the ceremony is set in front of grand barn doors left open to frame a panoramic view of the mountains. The cocktail hour is held just beyond the ceremony doors, overlooking the pond, and the reception welcomes with a conversation area created from collected furnishings gathered beneath an open air pavilion. “You want your guests to feel comfortable moving throughout the space,” Tucker says. “When you thoughtfully create each scene, your guests will be able to discern where they should be and when, and they will enjoy the time spent at each individual locale.” FAWN OVER YOUR FLORA “Decoration Inc. created an Italianinspired environment with a bouquet and arrangements compiling several varieties of roses, ranunculus, daisies, peonies and vines,” says Tucker. “And, the bride’s loose bouquet was held together with long streamers of hand-dyed silk ribbon that added a delicate, feminine touch to the overflowing collection of botanicals.”

Lessons in Love
An avant-garde event graduates at the top of its class. Photographs by ELISHA BRAITHWAITE
O
ON THE SUBJECT of modern, masculine style, Mara Mazdzer takes us to school. In the heart of Park City, Washington School House Hotel offers a stylized backdrop, equal parts polished and mountainapropos. In her design, Mazdzer—founder of Fuse Weddings and Events—offers an inspiring crash course in melding form and function.
CREATE CONTEMPO When it comes to pairing modernity with masculinity, contemporizing your space is key. Refreshingly out-of-the-box elements such as live, cloud-like cotton, twigs and branches offer foliage options far from traditional florals. For the tablescape, Mazdzer combines au courant flatware with lacquered cement-style china, adding refinement to the minimalistic place settings. The paper goods and monogram offer more modern, personalized touches through the simplicity and style of their graphic designs.
SET THE TONE According to Mazdzer, the key to personalizing a color palette is not overcomplicating it. Your palette helps determine the overall feel of your event, and it should reflect you and the space you’re in. The trick is to not take that
98 u t a h b r i d e a n d g r o o m . c o m
utahbrideandgroom.com
99
too literally. “You should define your color scheme, but you should also feel comfortable straying from it,” Mazdzer explains. “Consider the way that hues can be translated and the impact you want them to have on your venue. For example, one or two shades of each color in your palette should be used to either warm or cool the design.”
ACCOMMODATE YOUR ACCOMMODATIONS “When a venue is designed as beautifully as Washington School House Hotel, the last thing we want to do is work against the styling of the space,” says Mazdzer. Her trick to ensuring harmony between your event and your location? Familiarity. “When working with a curated locale, the key is to incorporate what is provided and then work backwards,” says Mazdzer. “Then, once you’ve established your foundation, you can begin to layer on personalized elements. Consider factors like what you want your guests to experience and characteristics that define you and your partner.” For example, this venue’s furnishings provide gray, blue and gold embellishments that serve as a luxe backdrop for design elements including the tablescape and bar.

KEEP IT CLOSE Pulling off the perfect party in a boutique hotel is all about constructing intimacy. According to Mazdzer, that intimacy relies on two key factors: a pared down guest list and romantic lighting. “When it comes to designing your wedding, what will ultimately create your perfect venue is the lighting,” Mazdzer explains. “From making your space picture-perfect to keeping the party going, the celebration’s illumination determines so much of the overall feel of the event.” For this occasion, the tall toffeetoned taper candles paired with the natural light from the hotel’s towering windows aggrandize a limited ceremony space.

Falling for You
Celebrate your love among the splendor of autumn.

Photographs by COLE HIGHTS
AS GOLDEN HOUR sets on vibrant fall leaves, autumn’s magic is undeniable. The smell of crackling fires paired with crunchy crimson leaves is enough to make just about anyone long for a day on the farm. That’s why The Wild Oak—a former historic apple orchard warehouse located along a country road in Lindon—has become a beloved event space melding modernity with tradition, perfectly suited for fall.
FORAGE YOUR FLORALS When it comes to floral arrangements, there’s no need to play by the rules. “Combining unexpected flower combinations is a great way to create visual interest,” explains Carly Olson, venue manager at The Wild Oak. “We wanted to create cohesiveness between the location and the decor, so we focused on utilizing locally sourced and foraged botanicals,” Olson adds.
utahbrideandgroom.com

“We erred on the side of florals over greenery for the centerpieces and bouquets in order to build depth and texture.” She also suggests using color creatively. “Adding blueberries to the warm-colored bouquets was the perfect way to create contrast and make the combinations unique.”
BUILD OFF THE BARNYARD The orange-hued, sun-bleached wood used for the pergola and trellis puts a spotlight on warm tones in this celebration’s overall design. “Reclaimed wood can provide a vintage feel and still appear elegant and polished when it’s formed into minimalistic structures,” Olson explains. “Simple décor at the altar places focus on the couple and allows for stellar images of your ‘I dos.’”
SET YOUR SCENES The key to making an event feel intimate in a large venue like The Wild Oak is to create vignettes throughout the space. “When you thoughtfully decorate and designate certain areas for different

107
components of your celebration, you offer guests an interesting and dynamic experience that encourages them to enjoy one another’s company as well as the party itself,” Olson says. “The trick is making sure to provide your guests with clear pathways so that the event flows seamlessly from one segment to the next.”
CHOOSE YOUR HUES Golden hour’s buttery-colored evening light provides a picture-perfect ceremony backdrop. “Autumn-inspired color schemes rely heavily on warm tones, so it’s important to create aesthetically intriguing pops, like different textures and metallic touches, so that the design doesn’t all blend together,” Olson says. “Deep shades of orange and burgundy are key when it comes to creating a cozy autumnal atmosphere.”

CR A SH COU R SE
ON COLOR Michelle Cousins, founder of Michelle Leo Events, offers tips and tricks for designing a wedding by coloring outside the lines.
Y
YOUR WEDDING DAY should symbolize who you are, which means sometimes soft neutral tones work perfectly and other times you ought to stray from the classics. Michelle Cousins, founder of Michelle Leo Events, makes the case for bright shades, vibrant hues and bold patterns— no matter the season, venue or vibe.

CUE YOUR HUES The first step to choosing a color scheme for your nuptials is factoring in the celebration’s star: you. “Evaluate who you are as a person and who you are as a couple,” Cousins says. “Ask yourself how your family and friends would describe you, then determine how you want your colors to make everyone in attendance feel.” Your palette plays an important role in setting the mood of your party, so consider the style and atmosphere you’re hoping to accomplish, as well as tones that help tell the story of your relationship.

Everyone has a Pinterest board, so it’s easy to get carried away with ideas you see in other weddings. But just because you love a fresh or unexpected idea online doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for your wedding. “You want your color palette to reflect who you are, not what year you got married,” Cousins says. “You’re going to spend the rest of your life with these photos. It’s one thing to be inspired by art and design; it’s another to base decisions solely on of-the-moment aesthetics.” Ask what colors make you happy, and go from there.
MIX AND MATCH If you find a venue that you love, but it clashes with your colors, you can either switch up a hue or two in your palette or neutralize the venue. “There are many ways to counterbalance unwanted elements in a venue,” explains Cousins. “From draping the perimeter of the room with minimalistic, natural linens to providing soft lighting in neutral tones, there are always ways to customize a venue and make it work for you.”

DO OR DON’T: TONAL TRENDS
PICK A PLACE “Once we determine in which season the wedding will take place, we can start curating the vibe and the venue,” explains Cousins. When couples begin the planning process with specific designs in mind but with no place to put them, Cousins uses their wish list to perfectly pair them with an event space. “For example, if a couple knows they want adventurous pops of color in their palette, I might suggest 4U Ranch (pictured) or River Bottoms Ranch because their neutral color schemes provide a blank slate that won’t compete with stand-out hues.”

Michelle Cousins
COLOR 101 “Picking your wedding palette isn’t as easy as choosing your two favorite colors and making them the foundation for every wedding detail,” says Cousins. “Lean toward working with color families.” But, she explains, there will almost always be prominent tones. Once you pick those, Cousins suggests creating your palette in one of two ways: CULL COMPLEMENTARY COLORS Round out your color wheel. “For example, if a couple is working with a lot of cool tones, I might explore ways to accent those hues with warm tones on the opposite side of the color spectrum,” says Cousins. Offering contrast is a great way to provide balance and depth within your celebration’s overall design.
SET YOUR SITE “Let’s say a client from an urban location chooses to celebrate their wedding in Utah because they’ve been drawn to the organic, natural landscape of the mountains,” Cousins begins. “With such a specific theme in mind, you’re better off erring on the side of tones existing in the locale. In an alpine setting like Park City, your best bet is to utilize cooler palettes because of their ability to mirror the tones found in that landscape by reflecting the skyline with colors like navy, slate gray, dusty blue and sage green.” However, if a couple is opting to tie the knot in the desert, I would suggest exploring warmer tones that can be found in our red rock desert and fiery sunsets.” michelleleoevents.com, @michelleleoevents

MAKE UP YOUR MIND

“The final decisions on your big day should all come down to who you are as an individual and as a couple,” says Cousins. “If a bride describes herself and her husband as happy, bold, quirky or lively, in my experience they tend to be drawn to the warmer, bolder, ‘happier’ tones,” Cousins explains. “Wherein the couple who describes their dream wedding as something timeless and romantic tends to be drawn toward cooler, moodier tones with an abundance of classic whites.” And remember, there are no “right” hues—the best picks will be the ones that excite you most.

CAMP SARIKA BY AMANGIRI delivers a rare departure into the wild, elevated by consummate comfort. This is a place where Utah’s otherworldly landscapes are celebrated and Native American culture is honored at every turn. The solitude and silence of this desert lend themselves to a splendor, entirely unique to the countless untouched miles of red rock country. Each component of Camp Sarika is marked with sincere intentionality, right down to its deeply apropos nomenclature. Sarika is derived from the Sanskrit word for “open space” and “sky,” while Amangiri’s moniker translates to “peaceful mountain.” In the morning, the camp is greeted by slanted sunbeams peeking up from breaks in the flat-topped mesas—a tranquil backdrop that offers a warm welcome to your wedding weekend. The 600 acres of peace and quiet that surround the camp suggest a stark departure from the seemingly inevitable matrimonial jitters. As the day passes, dawn’s glow transforms into boundless blue skies that light up sunsoaked limestone rocks; your celebration is officially underway. In many ways, 2020 provided everyone with the opportunity to realize what’s really important—our families, our friends and our health. As that challenging year shifts out of focus, new priorities emerge when it comes to celebrating life’s momentous events—namely, intentionality. Bringing loved ones along for new experiences and adventures, opening new doors and ensuring that those closest to you are there for the ride is at the heart of this monumental place, as it encourages you to make it “a camp of your own.” The abundance of space surrounding the camp is accentuated by its design, making the camp the ideal destination for groups or families looking for exclusive insight into

the destination or a special place for a celebration in undisturbed privacy. As the last rays of sun fall across the desert range, the cool tones of the day explode into a horizon of vermilion, salmon and plum. That vibrant, unimpeded view proposes the ultimate backdrop for your “I dos.” Its saturation also implores you to make bold design choices that pay homage to its sheer otherworldliness. Mara Mazdzer, owner of Fuse Weddings and Events, teamed up with Amanda Hansen, owner of Decoration Inc., to do just that. “We chose to keep the ceremony site simple, while offering tonal cues that mimicked the desert sunset within the florals,” says Mazdzer. Those very tones were carried over from the rehearsal dinner, where the colors shone bolder and brighter in the desert daylight. The framework for the ceremony took cues directly from the desert camp itself. “The beauty of the space is striking, so we worked to frame the space rather than impede the view,” explains Mazdzer. “That’s where the ‘church of dirt’ concept came in,” says Hansen. “It offers structural parallels to the surrounding mesas without detracting from them.” The wedding gown by Sarah Seven boasts a clean-lined simplicity contrasting with the intricate textures that abound within the limestone rock. To complement the gown, hair stylist Tenesha Luckett chose a sleek updo that melds elegance with contemporary style. In keeping with the bride’s chic, modern aesthetic, makeup artist Janelle Ingram created a dewy glow

elevated by a pop of pink on the lips. And jewelry by J. Brooks Jewelers completes the look with gold pieces that mirror the warm-toned desert surroundings. The A-list team that came together for this create this photo story understands the importance of creating a celebration that embraces the environment. The lands surrounding this amazing location make you feel as though it’s the last remnant of the truly wild west. The staggering landscape—adorned with canyons, mesas, mountains, gorges, rapids and desert— contains stories of human life that date back more than 10,000 years. This revitalized, reimagined piece of history implores all who visit to make it the setting for a story of their own.

PHOTO HANNAH MARICH
So close, yet so far from high school sweethearts: Sam and Elias began dating their sophomore year of high school before calling it quits at the end of their freshman year of college. However, five years after the duo parted ways, fate intervened and the two wound up staying in the same cabin for a local music festival. The couple has been inseparable ever since. The pair tied the knot on August 1st at a private residence in Park City.
