Three Tips for Discussing Race and Culture With Kids

My best friend in the second grade was Lela Jean. She was black. I can safely assume she is still African American and I am still white. I was new to Mrs. Morris’ second grade class and so was Lela Jean. I liked it that she was new to second grade the way I was. She didn’t have the history with other girls. The other girls had been together since first grade and to us, it seemed like they had insider information. Lela Jean and I hung out together at lunch and played together at recess. I spoke of her often at home at the dinner table. It became customary for my parents to ask, so what did Lela Jean and you do today? One day there was a track and field competition at school. Our parents were invited to attend and participate. My dad came. I was proud of that. Lela Jean’s dad came too. I introduced them and pointed to Lela Jean and said gladly, “This is Lela Jean!” Then we ran off to play together. On the drive home my dad said, “I didn’t know Lela Jean was black.” My dad grew up in the segregated south. There was a smile behind his comment. Part of him was proud and part of him was uncomfortable. I was just confused. Something had changed in an instant. Some adult awareness about race had tainted my child like wonder of it. I knew Lela Jean’s skin tone was different from mine; that was obvious. It didn’t matter to me. We had something much more important in common. We were both “the new girls” in Mrs. Morris’ second grade class. We had to negotiate the second grade politics of the girls who had been together since kindergarten. We needed each other, leaned on each other, enjoyed each other and came to love each other. Lela Jean was my friend. Regardless of your politics on the issues of the day, race is once again front 8 UTAHFAMILY.COM BACK TO SCHOOL 2016

and center on the evening news. Our children are often exposed to very adult conversations about race. This reality may beg the question, how do I talk about race with my child? As with any issue, behaviorist tell us, the first rule of thumb about discussing race with children is to model the behavior you want.

1. Be a good race relations role model. Practice diversity. Demonstrate positive race relations in practical ways in your own life by demonstrating diversity. Ask yourself, do I have friends of other races? If most of your friends are from your own race and culture, you may want to consider opportunities for you and your child to interact with other races and cultures. Attend a different church on Sunday. Observe how they worship. Find something to appreciate about it and comment on it to your child. You may find yourself asking, do I openly and verbally appreciate other races and cultures in front of my child? If you see a television program about a different culture, use the opportunity to discuss a different way of life and worldview. Find one thing you like about it and state it out loud.

2. Listen first. Don’t assume shared understandings about race. Sociologist assert that children construct differences and similarities differently than adults. Children notice differences quite early developmentally but it may be for reasons that interest children and not as adults define the difference. A teacher noticed that six

year old girls on a playground were not playing with one girl in particular, who was African American. The astute teacher listened first before intervening and found that the majority of the girls preferred to play with girls who wore their hair with ribbons instead of girls who didn’t use ribbons. The African American girl didn’t use ribbons in her hair. She was excluded from conversations and games. The girls were not excluding her because of race but because of ribbons. To adult eyes, the game looked racist but to the children controlling the game, it made sense. The teacher then noticed one girl sharing her ribbons with the African American girl. The teacher chose to intervene in that moment and praised the sharing behavior. She talked about inclusion.

3. Answer your child’s questions about race and culture in an age appropriate way. Alvin Poussaint, M.D, describes two critical development ages when race and culture questions are likely to occur. They are, ages six to eight years old and the teenage years. These stages are times when the child’s world is expanding and their values are forming or solidifying. Responding to a child’s questions at these stages in simple, honest terms is important. “I don’t know” and “Give me a chance to think about that and then we will talk,” are appropriate responses to race related questions from time to time. When your seven year old child comes home and declares a classmate has an Asian mom and a black dad and says, “Isn’t that weird? You may choose to say, “Not weird, just different from us.” When your teen asks what you think about his school renaming their sports teams because Native Americans find “Redskins” to be offensive, you can use it as an opportunity to discuss your own believes about racial slurs while demonstrating respect that others might not see it the same way. Encourage being a friend and making new friends • Some kids might worry about making new friends and “fitting in.” Finding a safe, welcoming group is a great foundation for dealing with the ups and downs of school. Learn more about helping your kids make friends.

How to Ease Back-to-School Stress The start of a school year can be a challenging time for kids and parents with transitions from one grade to another, new teachers, bullying, social pressure and much more. With a little preparation and the right attitude, shifting from a laid-back summer to the routine of school doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are some tips shared by the Children’s Hospital of Colorado:

Ease the stress and establish routines • Talk about it. Ask your child what he or she is worried about if they show concern, and talk about the fun and exciting things that will be happening throughout the school year. • Stay positive! If you show enthusiasm for what the new school year brings, your kids are sure to pick up on it, and the nervous energy will turn into excitement. • Establish fun traditions. Do something fun the night before school starts, or have a special breakfast before the first day. Make it a day they look forward to every year. • Get back on schedule. Before the school year begins, start establishing the “school year” bedtimes, and wake children up at the

time they will be getting up for school. Also, eat meals on a more regular schedule before school starts. • Don’t over-schedule your child or family. Also, include your child in decisions regarding what or how many activities they are involved in. Ask him or her how much they can handle in addition to school work. • Set expectations. Go through expectations ahead of time about getting dressed, eating breakfast, and appropriate grooming so that everyone gets out the door on time. • Make it special. For younger children, include a family photo or a special note in their backpack or lunchbox to help them get the day. • Stay involved with your child’s school and have regular communication with

the teacher -- even if it’s over email. Stay on top of how your child is doing academically, socially and behaviorally. • Get organized! Establish a family calendar where all after-school events and important assignment due dates are easy to spot. Prepare school bags and clothes the night before, arrange books and school supplies on shelves or in boxes or drawers, organize all paperwork by priority, and make a single to-do list of all the tasks you need to complete each day. • Plan the homework load. Make a plan for where and when homework will be done. Is it always done at the kitchen table right after school, or is there a desk your child uses and homework time will be after dinner? Stick to a schedule so it’s always part of the evening routine.

• Help your child understand that every part of building friendships is a skill, so the more they practice, the better they will get. Some of the skills may be: introducing yourself, showing interest in others’ comments, finding common ground from which to build upon, inviting people to do things, etc. • One person’s “joke” can easily be another person’s hurt feelings. Coach children on considering how their words and actions could be interpreted by others. Set expectations early on for appropriate behavior, and listen to how they interact with their friends. • Teach your child empathy and how to be a good friend. • Research shows that hostility between siblings is not innocent and can leave a lasting, detrimental impact. Do not tolerate bullying or aggression between siblings. • Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. • Know your child’s online world – check their postings and visit sites they frequent. • Read more about bullying, or check out the infographic below. The Modern Student: Tech that Turns Homework into Child’s Play

extracurricular clubs take advantage of popular social sites that allow for group discussion and collaboration. Sharing research or asking a classmate about due dates has never been easier. When your children are old enough to join certain social sites per the user agreement (often that’s age 13), sit down with your child to get them started. Explain rules and expectations and make sure you control their privacy settings.

Video Chat Getting together with a study group has never been easier with tools like Skype and Google Hangouts. The basic phone call is on its way out. Virtual face-to-face conversations are the way to go now, and you can help your kids prepare by helping them feel comfortable meeting this way. You can also begin to teach them meeting etiquette, including making eye contact, taking turns speaking, etc.

Smart Home Controls Watch a group of kindergartners counting blocks on a worksheet, and “enthusiastic” may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Ask them to perform the same task on the classroom’s tablets—where they can count, sort, and manipulate the images—and you’ll see them become engaged and even excited. Homework has gotten a bad rap lately, but the right technology can not only make it easier but more fun. One study published by Science Direct reported that subjects who played Portal 2—a popular first-person puzzle video game—performed better on problem solving, spatial skills, and more than those who used a brain-training program. To get the school year off on the right foot, you’ll probably want access to basics tools like a computer, the internet, and a printer. Then, consider obtaining some of the following technologies to make studying more engaging and interactive:

Smartphone This comes in handy for everything from quick internet searches to letting you know they need to stay after school for an impromptu study session. Having information at their fingertips enables them to answer 16 UTAHFAMILY.COM BACK TO SCHOOL 2016

their own questions and encourages healthy curiosity. Make sure you set limits, check the phone frequently, and set up parental controls.

Tablet A tablet provides many of the benefits of the smartphone, but in a more shareable, easy-to-manage way—especially for younger children. To save money, looked at refurbished options, and protect your investment buy purchasing a heavy-duty case.

Tumbleweeds Film Festival Returns to the Rose Wagner Center Utah Film Center (UFC) will be presenting the sixth annual Tumbleweeds Film Festival, the Intermountain West’s only film festival dedicated to youth, in downtown Salt Lake City at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center September 23-25. The festival introduce the young and young at heart to the newest culturally-enriching, curated international cinema available. A slew of films are set to be announced on Sept. 7. “Utah Film Center Artistic Director Patrick Hubley watches films from all over the world for months leading up to the festival and selects the best of the best for inclusion in each Tumbleweeds Film Festival. This year you can expect more than 10 titles to choose from,” states Dana Hernandez, Festival and Special Projects Manager for the UFC. In addition to the films, the Festival includes various media arts workshops, and a kids clubhouse designed to balance the Festival’s visual content with active play. The workshops cost $15, and families can sign up at www.utahfilmcenter.org/ shift/workshops. The Kids Clubhouse is free and open to all Tumbleweeds Film Festival patrons. “It’s a place to go in between film screenings to engage in active play and hands on activities,” explains Hernandez. ”The Salt Lake Maker Fair is planning a unique activity for kids and SLC Crossfit will be back for a second year to create a space to facilitate physical play and exercise.”
