Staying Connected as a Couple, Despite Your Hectic Lives Maya is in the midst of her typical morning dash to get herself to work and her three-year-old son to daycare. Just before leaving, she runs upstairs with some water and a special tea for cough and cold. Her husband, Bobby, caught their three-year- old’s cold and is now down for the count. Bobby was pleasantly surprised when he woke up and saw what Maya had left for him. If relationship therapist and researcher, John Gottman was a fly on the wall, he would consider this exchange more important than if he had seen the couple “doing it up big” for Valentine’s.

Small Is Enormously Important What makes the above exchange important is that the couple connected over something simple, Bobby’s sickness. The key to making relationships work, is to connect over the mundane stuff of life, explains Gottman in his book: The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, co-authored with Nan Silver. The authors go on to say that if you haven’t been connecting in small ways all along, when you plan something big and romantic it may fall flat. Basically, you have nothing in your love bank to draw upon when you are finally out for that date night.

Don’t Lose Sight However, it can be tricky trying to maintain a connection to your spouse. There is so much vying for your attention between the house, kids, work and other commitments. Instead of seeing the daily grind as a hindrance to 8 UTAHFAMILY.COM WINTER EDITION

romance, use it to connect over. If your husband is clearing out the garage and asks your opinion on reorganizing it, don’t brush him off thinking you normally have to figure this kind of stuff out for yourself. Engage with him. You don’t have to help him with the entire project, but you can help him problem solve. Maya stated that her husband really appreciates it when he can vent to her about work stuff and she helps him think it through. Gottman and Silver explain that when one person in the relationship turns to the other for attention, affection, support or to share something humorous, these are all bids for connection. “Couples who turn toward each other remain emotionally engaged,” say Gottman and Silver. They explain that when you take the time to acknowledge your partner

Opposite Directions?

Attention To Details

What if you and your partner work opposite schedules? How do you stay connected then? Carlos and Bernadette have two girls ages six and sixteen. This couple works full time, but Carlos also does shift work. “When he is working five nights in a row, he is gone before we even get home and we are gone before he gets up for the day. Essentially, we do not see him for five days,” says Bernadette. They stay connected by using pen and paper. “I find with texting we often use short cuts and half sentences and stuff gets missed or misinterpreted,” explains Bernadette. “I leave him a note every night before bed just touching base with him about our day

When Bernadette and Carlos actually get to see each other, they have to guard against busyness crowding out their ability to connect. “I find that when life is busy you are just trying to get from one activity to the next one and I think sometimes we don’t even notice one another,” says Bernadette. She remedies this by remembering her basic manners and complimenting him, saying thank you to him and smiling at him. “It can be as simple as a smile across the table at dinner time,” says Bernadette. She will also look for ways to be present in Carlos’ life by asking him about his hockey game and checking in on things he has shared with her before. Gottman and Silver explain that when couples care about the details in each others’ worlds, it increases the

couple’s understanding of one another and in turn their love for each other. They refer to this detailed knowledge of each other as creating a love map.

Have a Love Map Gottman and Silver state that having a detailed love map means that you are in the habit of checking in with each other and have an accurate sense of how your partner typically thinks or feels. They explain that this knowledge can be protective when the inevitable challenges of life present themselves, like when your child turns three. Maya and Bobby’s three- year-old son can be a force to be reckoned with. The couple regularly bond over the joy and misery that comes with kids at this age. Maya shared that the connection between her and Bobby is deepened because they can vent to each other and know that they will not be judged by the other. Having detailed knowledge of how the other thinks and feels allows them to have this kind of trust.

Once Again

The Balance of Me & Us Maya also connects with Bobby by encouraging him to do his own thing. Bernadette agrees with this strategy, She provides some insight into how this works in her relationship: “We both need time to do activities that fill us up, since we are so busy doing things that empty us. Balancing “me time” with “us time” is so important for us. I find when we become disconnected from one another, it’s because our personal energy banks are empty.” Bernadette and Carlos recharge separately by doing activities they love. Then when they are home together, they have the energy to enjoy each other’s company.

If you have less than 15 minutes to connect, try these: • Say thank you for something they did. • Give them a long hug. • Send a sweet or sexy text. • Kiss and then whisper something thoughtful in their ear. • Hold hands in public or at home, even if it’s just for a few seconds. • Share what you love about your partner with others, in front of them. • Say I love you at an unexpected, but genuine time. • Flirt with them. • Make eye contact and smile at them. • Compliment them.

If you have 15-30 minutes to connect, try these: • Ask them about their day and actually listen to them. • Put on fun or romantic music and clean up the kitchen together. • Plant treats for your spouse (i.e. in their lunch bag, purse, laptop bag, under pillow etc.) The treats can be little notes or something fun and edible. • Do a chore for them they would appreciate taken off their hands.

8 Tips for Getting Toddlers and Preschoolers to Sleep Better Parents expect to be sleep deprived zombies while their babies are little, but what if the sleeping issues continue into the toddler years? After all, Mom and Dad can only run on fumes for so long. I spoke to infant and toddler sleep expert Elizabeth Pantley, author of the best selling “No Cry Solution” series. Pantley offers valuable ideas for helping almost every toddler or preschooler get into a healthy sleep routine. These tips can bring improvement not only in your child’s sleep, but also in her daytime mood, growth health and outlook as well.

Maintain a consistent bedtime and awake time

Your child’s biological clock has a strong influence on her wakefulness and sleepiness. When you establish a set time for bedtime and wake up time you “set” your child’s clock so that it functions smoothly. Aim for an early bedtime. Young children respond best with a bedtime between 6:30 and 7:30 P.M. Most children will sleep better and longer when they go to bed early.

Encourage regular naps

Daily naps are important. An energetic child can find it difficult to go through the day without a rest break. A nap-less child will often wake up cheerful and become progressively fussier or hyper-alert as the day goes on. Also, the length and quality of naps affects night sleep – good naps equal better night sleep. If your child won’t nap stick to a routine “quiet time” every day for a rest break.

arrives. Darkness causes an increase in the release of the body’s sleep hormone -- the biological “stop” button. You can align your child’s sleepiness with bedtime by dimming the lights during the hour before bedtime. Exposing your child to morning light is pushing the “go” button in her brain — one that says, “Time to wake up and be active.” So keep your mornings bright!

Develop a consistent bedtime routine

Routines create security. A consistent, peaceful bedtime routine allows your child to transition from the motion of the day to the tranquil state of sleep. An organized routine helps you coordinate the specifics: bath, pajamas, tooth-brushing. It helps you to function on auto-pilot at the time when you are most tired and least creative.

Create a cozy sleep environment

Where your child sleeps can be a key to quality sleep. Make certain the mattress is comfortable, the blankets are warm, the room temperature is right, pajamas are comfy, and the bedroom is welcoming.

Provide the right nutrition

Foods can affect energy level and sleepiness. Carbohydrates can have a calming effect on the body, while foods high in protein or sugar generate alertness, particularly when eaten alone. A few ideas for pre-bed snacks are: whole wheat toast and cheese, bagel and peanut butter, oatmeal with bananas, or yogurt and low-sugar granola. Vitamin deficiencies due to unhealthy food choices can affect a child’s sleep. Provide your child

with a daily assortment of healthy foods in three meals plus several snacks for health and good sleep.

Help your child to be healthy and fit

Many children don’t get enough daily physical activity. Too much TV watching and a lack of activity prevents good sleep. Children who get ample daily exercise fall asleep more quickly, sleep better, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling refreshed. Avoid activity in the hour before bedtime though, since exercise is stimulating – they’ll be jumping on the bed instead of sleeping in it!

Teach your child how to relax

Many children get in bed but aren’t sure what to do when they get there! It can help to follow a soothing pre-bed routine that creates sleepiness. A good pre-bed ritual is story time. A child who is listening to a parent read a book or tell a tale will tend to lie still and listen. This quiet stillness allows him to become sleepy. When little ones don’t sleep well, Mom and Dad don’t sleep well. Lack of sleep isn’t healthy for anyone - big or small. Starting new routines is challenging when everyone is exhausted - and maybe even a bit cranky - but if it can bring more sleep to the home soon, it is well worth the initial discomfort. Rachael Moshman, M.Ed., has worked with thousands of young children and their families over the last two decades. She’s also the mom of a child who suffers from insomnia and knows sleep deprivation well.

Are Your Kids Favorite Superheroes a Force for Good or Bad Behavior? There’s a lot of good that kids can take away from watching their favorite superheroes. By defending and protecting the weak, using their talents to help others and fighting for a cause that’s bigger than themselves, just to name a few. BYU family life professor, Sarah M. Coyne decided to study what it was, that preschool-aged boys and girls took away from exposure to superhero culture; it wasn’t the many positive traits that shone through. “So many preschoolers are into superheroes and so many parents think that the superhero culture will help their kids defend others and be nicer to their peers,” Coyne said, “but our study shows the exact opposite. Kids pick up on the aggressive themes and not the defending ones.” Coyne found that children who frequently engage with superhero culture are more likely to be physically aggressive one year later. She even found that children less likely to be defenders of kids being picked on by bullies and were less likely to be prosocial. It is nearly impossible to avoid the superhero culture in America, I currently have a three-year-old son who likes Spiderman even though he has never seen the movies. dresses up as Spiderman occasionally and will go around pretending to shoot webs. The point of the study is not to ban superheroes as they can be a fun and magical part of childhood.

culture, Coyne echoes the same sentiment with superhero culture – these findings do not suggest that parents need to totally disengage their children from superheroes. “Again, I’d say to have moderation,” Coyne said. “Have your kids involved in all sorts of activities, and just have superheroes be one of many, many things that they like to do and engage with.” Findings like these give parents the opportunity to have a conversation with their children. Coyne says to not be afraid of pointing out the positives as well as the negatives of the media their children are consuming. Coyne believes that a reason why children may latch on to the violent behavior and not the prosocial behavior of superheroes is in part, due to the complexity of the superhero media. The vast majority of superhero programs are not created for preschool children, even though the current study found that many preschoolers still regularly watched superhero programs. These programs contain complex storylines that intertwine violence and prosocial behavior, and preschoolers do not have the cognitive capability to pick out the wider moral message that is often portrayed.

Coyne also states that there is likely some additional desensitization associated with consuming violent media. Reduction in cognitive and emotional responses has been shown to be associated with exposure to violent media. That reduction of response to the victims of violence on the TV screen, computer or tablet, could be associated to a lack of empathy for the victims of violence on the playground or at school. “Again, I’d say to have moderation. Parents were asked how often their children watched superhero media and how much they identified with various superheroes. Children were also individually interviewed and were asked identify 10 popular superheroes. They were then asked to identify their favorite superhero and explain why they liked that superhero the best. The children’s responses in the study about their favorite superheroes provided important insight in the study:

Of the kids who specified characteristics in superheroes, 10% noted some defending ability of the superheroes – “Because he shoots webs and he saves people.” Twenty percent of these children associated their favorite superhero with some type of violent skills. For example, “He’s big and can punch” and “He smashes and gets angry.” Some were milder, while others suggested blatant aggression. “Because he can smash and destroy

With three sons of her own, and another on the way in two weeks, Coyne has seen superhero culture played out in her own home. “It is nearly impossible to avoid the superhero culture in America,” Coyne said. “I currently have a three-year-old son who likes Spiderman even though he has never seen the movies. He dresses up as Spiderman occasionally and will go around pretending to shoot webs. The point of the study is not to ban superheroes as they can be a fun and magical part of childhood. However, the superhero culture can become consuming, especially if kids are watching the movies, playing with the toys, strongly identifying with the characters, dressing up, etc. This study is all about balance. For example, my son is almost equally as likely to pretend he is Elsa and belt out the lyrics to ‘Let it Go.’ It’s about finding balance and ways to talk about superheroes that focus on the positive aspects.” Coauthors on the study included fellow BYU professors Laura Stockdale and David Nelson, along with BYU graduate students Kevin Collier and Lee Essig, as well as Jennifer Linder from Linfield College. 6 Tips to Keep the Kids Sledding Safely Most people can agree that kids on slippery saucers careening down an icy hill at upwards of 25 miles per hour can be dangerous. According to the Center on Injury Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, more than 20,000 kids younger than 19 are treated for sledding injuries on average each year. Injuries often occur when the sled hits a stationary object or the child falls off. That’s why parents would be wise to purchase sleds that can be controlled with a steering mechanism and brakes. If you are planning on taking the kids to the local hill, don’t just drop them off, especially if they’re under age 10. Stick around while they sled, make sure all sledders wear a helmet – sledding injuries often include skull fractures – and be sure to share these important guidelines with them so they can enjoy tobogganing and sledding safely. 1. Make sure all equipment is in good condition, free of sharp edges and cracks 2. Sled on spacious, gently sloping hills with a level run-off at the end so the sled can safely stop 3. Check slopes for bare spots, holes and obstructions, such as fences, rocks, poles or trees 4. Do not sled on or around frozen lakes, streams or ponds 5. Riders should sit or lay on their back on top of the sled with feet pointing downhill; never sled head first. 6. Dress warmly, and wear thick gloves or mittens and heavy boots to protect against frostbite and injury Think through a safety plan before the next snowfall. When kids see snow on the ground and a slope nearby, they’ll be itching to head out the door. Remember that awareness of surroundings and sticking to safety guidelines do not take away from the thrill of sledding, but a trip to the hospital most likely will. Raising Kids Who Can Code Over 600,000 computing jobs are available in the US, but only 43,000 computer science majors graduated last year. That startling statistic from code.org may explain why 9 out of 10 parents want children to learn computer programming. Even kids who aren’t likely to choose programming as a career benefit from learning something about it. Coding teaches kids to analyze problems, think logically and be persistent about troubleshooting. Getting results also gives kids a sense of accomplishment and confidence that they can make technology work for them. Unfortunately, many K-12 schools don’t routinely offer coding classes. To correct that problem, the White House launched a CS for All Initiative earlier this year. Parents can find out about exemplary school programs at digitalpromise.org and discover local programs in the “Learn” section of code.org. For an ambitious summer of learning to code, check out the many programs offered by Youth Education at the U of U. Just for Girls. In the past, boys gravitated towards programming more readily than girls. A number of organizations are trying to reverse that trend. Madewithcode.com, a Google initiative, features exciting coding projects developed by young women. Girlswhocode.com sponsors tech clubs and summer camps for girls. And Girldevelopit. com offers supportive women-only classes in 52 US cities. Stuff around the House. CSunplugged.org promises to teach kids some of the basic concepts of computer science through games and puzzles that use inexpensive materials like cards, string, ping pong balls and crayons that are probably lying around your house. The site which is popular with educators includes downloads and videos explaining how to make use of the materials. With so many options available, every parent should be able to find a program or project that matches your child’s age and temperament as well as the family’s schedule and budget.
