HAPPY BIRTHDAYS ANNER DIRECTORY by Laurie Zottmann
Birthday Party Rescue: Creating a Special Day When You’re Drained Have you ever felt like you didn’t have the time or energy to give your child the party she deserved? Maybe the birthday fell when you were sick, moving, or working double overtime. It happened to me when my oldest turned three. I was pregnant, as big as a house, and roughly as mobile. I felt like I was
neglecting my daughter, and was eager to compensate with an exciting day that was all about her. The baby was due two months before Big One’s birthday. I told myself that as soon as I delivered this lead-filled watermelon, I would bounce right back to my old self and knock this party out of the park. To my
16 UTAHFAMILY.COM SUMMER PLANNER EDITION 2016
dismay, Sweet Daughter the Second was born almost two weeks late, and she was a colicky handful. I stumbled through those recovery weeks on shattered sleep, and was just beginning to achieve a daily shower, when I realized that this much-hyped fiesta needed assembly. “How on earth do parents do this?” I wondered, as I nursed, rocked, nursed, changed, nursed, served cold leftovers, and nursed some more. Luckily, my wonderful family was there. When they asked, “What does she want for her birthday?” I said, “A
party!” and we divvied up the jobs. We ended up with a fun day at the park. There was a crown, some cupcakes, and lots of balloons in her favorite colors. My sweetheart felt like a princess, and I decided we could keep both kids after all. There are lots of tricks that can help you conjure up low-stress birthday fun. Here are some that helped me and other run-down parents give our children a happy day to celebrate their fantastic self:
Ask for Help Grandparents, aunts,
uncles, or friends might be game to help. Someone might even offer to plan the whole event, or maybe a crew would be happy to each bring a snack, a game, or an item of décor.
Go Off-Location Rather than cleaning and decorating your house, why not take the party to a restaurant or pool? For Happy Birthdays no cost, have a picnic at the park, or ask a generous friend or relative to host for you.
Simplify Your Usual “I love planning parties,” says Angela, mom of two, “especially making cakes. I like to top them with figurines built out of modeling chocolate and work up a theme. When my oldest turned four, though, I didn’t have time for the usual prep. We went on holidays just before her birthday, right when I would normally be working on the party. I changed my plan and made a simple cake with colorful batter and icing rosettes. I got it all done in a day, and it was still very pretty and special.”

SUMMER PLANNER ANNER DIRECTORY by Melinda Myers
Create a Garden Anywhere with Straw Bales Add productive garden space and raise your planting bed with straw bale gardening. This technique allows gardeners to create raised bed gardens on a patio, lawn or any area with poor compacted soil. Straw bale gardening has been around for centuries, but thanks to Joel Karsten’s book “Straw Bale Gardens” it has gained new popularity. All that is needed are a few straw bales, fertilizer, a bit of compost and time to condition, plant and water the garden. Be sure to purchase straw bales made from alfalfa, wheat, oats, rye or other cereal grain that have less weed seeds than hay. Start a few weeks before the designated planting date. Place the bales in their permanent location with the cut sides up and twine parallel to the ground. Once you start the condition process, the bales will be very heavy and hard to move. When the bales are in place you are ready to start the conditioning process. This is done to start the inside of the straw bales composting, so they’ll support plant growth. On day one, spread fertilizer over
the top of the bale. Use a ½ cup of a complete garden fertilizer or three cups of an organic fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com). Then completely moisten the bale. The organic fertilizers feed the microorganisms that help decompose the straw into a nutrient rich planting medium. Thoroughly soak the bale everyday. On days three and five you will add more fertilizer at the same rate used on day one. Days seven through nine use half the rate used on day one. This would be ¼ cup of a complete garden fertilizer or 1 ½ cups of an organic fertilizer. Thoroughly water the bale each time. On day ten you will add one cup of 10-10-10 or three cups of an organic fertilizer rich in phosphorous and potassium. This completes the conditioning process. Bales treated with a complete fertilizer should be ready to plant. You may need to wait a few more days when using an organic fertilizer. The inside of the bale should be the temperature of warm bath water or cooler for planting. If it is hotter than this, wait for the bale to cool a bit before you plant. Use a trowel to pry open a hole in the bale. Place the plant in the hole and cover the roots with potting mix or compost. Create a planting bed for seeds by covering the bale with a one- to twoinch thick layer of planting mix. Follow
photo by Melinda Myers the planting directions on the back of the seed packet. Regular watering is critical for success. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation make this an easier task. You can also use gallon milk jugs with holes in the bottom or inverted two-liter soda bottles placed near the base of each plant to provide water where it is needed. Give your straw bale garden a nutrient boost about once a month or as needed throughout the growing season. Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to growing a productive straw bale garden to enjoy throughout the season. Gardening expert Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening and the Midwest Gardener’s Handbook. She hosts The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything: Food Gardening For Everyone” DVD set and the nationally syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment TV & radio segments. SUMMER PLANNER LANNER DIRECTORY by Dr. Laurie Holman
Put Together Your Summer Camp Master Plan We all know the reasons to send our kids to camp—gets them active, develops independence, makes incredible memories—but questions and concerns about summer camp still abound for many parents. What age is right? What type of summer camp should I send my child to? How do we as a family prepare for camp? Dr. Laurie Hollman, psychotherapist and author of the book Unlocking Parental Intelligence, offers this advice:
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I SEND MY CHILD TO CAMP? The answer to this question is complex and really depends on the individual child. For parents of pre-schoolers, consider your child’s physical capacity to withstand a day of constant activity in the heat. “Between swimming, crafts, singing, drama, kickball, etc., summer camp provides a constant swirl of events, which works wonderfully for some children, but not all,” says Hollman.
For all ages, consider the following:
•
Does your child enjoy a range of different activities?
•
Is your child open to new experiences and pushing his or her comfort zone?
• •
Can he or she make friends? Does your child follow instruction and cooperate effectively?
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I SEND MY CHILD TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP? Again, the answer is complex and really depends on the individual child. Consider if your child has had experiences sleeping away from home and how they’ve reacted. Usually this occurs by ages 7-9, but remember each child is individual. Consider the following:
•
Has your child had a sleep over at a friend’s house or a relatives?
•
What’s your child’s general attitude about being away from you?
•
What’s your own level of separation anxiety?
•
How has your child succeeded at day camp? You’ll want your child to understand what camp’s about before you send him off for a few weeks.
WHAT T YPE OF CAMP
staff and thousands of happy campers. Additionally, many camps have philosophies— culture, arts, leadership, teamwork—that are weaved into all activities.
For all camps, be sure to look into:
• •
The ratio of campers to counselors.
•
Accreditation by the American Camp Association
•
If the kids are swimming, is there time for free as well as instructional swim.
SHOULD I CONSIDER? There are more options today than ever before—from your common local day camps to themed, religious, sports and sleepaway camps. The possibilities are endless. Here’s what’s important to know for each:
Themed Camps. Themed camps usually last for shorter periods of time so they give more latitude for parent and child. To consider: While your child may be doing what he or she truly loves, does the camp’s timing work for your needs as well.
Sleepaway Camps. What’s the communications plan for sleepaway camp? A good camp sends frequent updates, doesn’t allow for cell phones so that kids can let go and integrate, provides comfortable phone time and encourages frequent letter or email writing.
Day Camps. Have you looked into the camp’s history and philosophy? Many camps have been around for generations with seasoned

HOW TO PREPARE FOR CAMP? •
When you start researching camps early in the year, start talking about camp with your child.
•
Once you have real information about the camp, express all of the fun and excitement that comes with the various activities available.
•
If your child is going to sleepaway camp, begin to talk to them about the idea of going away.
