Turkey Day Traditions: 15 Ways to Keep Your Kids Entertained on Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day isn’t always a favorite among kids. From the pressure to be on their best behavior at the dinner table to the boredom that can set in while the grown-ups are busy cooking, it’s easy to see why children sometimes need a little help enjoying this particular holiday. By creating a few new family traditions, you can keep kids busy and entertained on Thanksgiving Day – and even teach them a thing or two about gratitude in the process. Whether you’re celebrating with just your family or expecting a houseful of relatives, be sure to plan some of the following fun activities that kids of all ages can enjoy. 1. Watch a Thanksgiving Day Parade. The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York is always televised live on Thanksgiving morning. Many other cities televise their parades on local stations as well. 2. Create a Handprint Turkey Table Runner. When kids cover

their hands in fabric paint and press their handprints onto a plain white table runner, a festive Thanksgiving centerpiece can result. Let them draw or paint legs and beaks on the handprints to turn them into “turkeys.” Add new handprint turkeys to the same runner every year on Thanksgiving Day. 3. Start a Gratitude Journal. Pass around a pen and a notebook and ask family members and guests to write down five things they are thankful for. Give younger children crayons so they can draw pictures of things that make them happy. Not only will this activity keep kids busy, it also creates a wonderful family keepsake, especially if you add to the notebook year after year. 4. Make homemade butter. Kids can do this one all by themselves. Add heavy whipping cream and a bit of salt to a glass jar, put on the lid and then shake, shake, shake. Gradually, the mixture will thicken and you’ll start to see

a mass of butter inside. Flavor the butter if you like by mixing in fresh herbs, cinnamon or honey, and then serve it with Thanksgiving dinner. 5. Bake up a batch of “Thanksgiving Thankful Rolls.” Start by having children write down things they are thankful for on small strips of paper. Next, prepare a baking sheet as directed for your favorite crescent rolls. Have kids add one strip of paper to the middle of each piece of dough, and then roll up and bake according to the recipe (making sure no paper is sticking out or it will burn). These make a clever addition to any Thanksgiving table. 6. Play a game of touch football. Watching football may be a Thanksgiving Day tradition, but active kids are likely to prefer playing the actual game. Teach them the rules, divide them into teams and then send them outside to play. For even more family fun, encourage the adults to join too. 7. Go Pumpkin Bowling. Set up plastic bowling pins on your lawn or floor and let kids use small pumpkins (about four to six inches in diameter) as bowling balls. Hand out prizes for strikes and spares.

8. Make Pumpkin Pie Playdough. Homemade Pumpkin Pie Playdough is easy to make, smells divine and can keep kids busy for hours. Make a batch ahead of time, and then on Thanksgiving Day supply kids with rolling pins and cookie cutters so they can create their very own masterpieces. 9. Set out coloring pages, word searches and mazes. Buy Thanksgiving-themed activity books at a craft or school supply store or look online to find pages you can print at home. Set these out at a kids’ table with an assortment of pencils, markers and crayons. 10. Take a family nature hike. Before dinner, take the kids outside to enjoy the crisp November air. Collect acorns, leaves and sticks for future craft projects and work up an appetite for the Thanksgiving meal to come. 11. Set up a scavenger hunt. Divide kids into teams and have them search for a list of Thanksgiving-themed items like candy corn, apples, cranberries, feathers, oven mitts, a turkey baster and more. The team that finds all the items first wins. 12. Write notes to relatives

who live far away. Have grandparents or other family members who live out of state and can’t visit for Thanksgiving? Encourage kids to write notes letting them know how much they are missed. Or use an application like Skype so everyone can video chat faceto-face. 13. Assign responsibilities. Kids love to feel like they are contributing to the family in a meaningful way. Even young children can take coats from guests as they arrive. Ask older children to refill drinks as needed or help in the kitchen by washing dishes and loading the dishwasher. 14. Pay a tween or teen to chaperone. If you’re having a large holiday gathering where lots of children will be present,

consider paying one of the older kids to entertain the younger ones. Have them play board games or read books about Thanksgiving. Tweens and teens appreciate the extra cash, and adults appreciate the extra help watching their kids. 15. Write letters to Santa. Planning to shop on Black Friday? If Santa visits your house, make it a tradition for kids to write letters to him on Thanksgiving so you know what to buy. After all, Christmas is just around the corner! Alyssa Chirco writes about parenting and family life for publications across the country. Making Pumpkin Pie Playdough is one of her family’s favorite Thanksgiving Day traditions.

Pumpkin Pie Playdough Recipe Ingredients: · 1 cup flour · ½ cup salt · 1 cup water · 2 teaspoons cream of tartar · 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (or a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves) · ½ teaspoon cinnamon · 1 tablespoon vegetable oil · orange gel food coloring paste (or red and yellow food coloring drops)

Instructions: 1. Combine flour, salt, cream of tartar and spices in a medium nonstick saucepan. 2. Add oil, water and food coloring. Whisk until smooth. 3. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 3-4 minutes. You will know your playdough is finished when it begins to pull away from the sides and form a ball in the center of the pan. 4. Remove from heat and allow playdough to cool slightly. Once cool, knead on a flat surface for about a minute. For an even stronger scent, you can knead more cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice into the dough at this time. 5. Store in an airtight bag or sealed container for up to a week.

Homework HQ: 6 Study Stations That Spell School Year Success Homework may not be your child’s favorite part of the school year, but it’s no secret that completing those after-school assignments can lead to academic success. Help the students in your household develop good study habits and tackle their homework with confidence by creating at least one of these well-stocked study stations within your home.

1. A Desk in the Bedroom This option is ideal for students who need a designated work space away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the family. While a bedroom desk may not be the best choice for students who need homework help or frequent reminders to stay on task, it works well for both older students and self-motivated learners. Consider a high loft bed with a desk underneath when floor space is at a premium.

2. A Family Work Zone Some families designate an entire room in their house as a family work zone, and equip the space with computers and printers, as well as a table or desk for writing and big, comfy chairs for reading and studying. Art and craft supplies are often found here too, since these rooms are designed with both creativity and productivity in mind. Kids who like company while doing homework thrive in this kind of environment, since siblings are often close by working on projects of their own. Loft spaces, basements, attics and spare bedrooms all lend themselves to becoming a family work zone with the right furniture and accessories.

3. A Central Command Center Love the idea of a family work zone, but don’t have the space? A small desk in the kitchen or family room can serve as a work space for the whole family too, especially 10 UTAHFAMILY.COM OCT/NOV 2015

when there are cabinets for storage either above or below. Think about where you keep items like calendars, school papers and the family computer in your home. You probably already have a central command center of sorts; stash some scissors, pens, paper and glue sticks there, and you have a simple study station ready to go.

4. A Multi-Purpose Office Mom or Dad’s home office can easily double as your family’s homework headquarters. Standard office supplies will already be on hand, and it is a room that has already been designed with work in mind. For younger students, clear a space on the desk or tuck a small table and chair into a corner of the room so they can work on their assignments while you work on yours. To make this arrangement work with older students, consider assigning designated office hours so every member of the family knows when he or she can expect to use the space.

5. A Rolling Homework Cart Need some flexibility in your life? Keep in mind that a homework headquarters doesn’t have to be stationary. Invest in a rolling homework cart and students can do homework almost anywhere in the house. Notebooks, file folders, writing supplies, paper and even laptops and printers can be stored on these carts, especially if you invest in one with

at least three shelves. And with this option, you enjoy the added bonus of easy cleanup and out-of-the-way storage, since the cart can be rolled right back into an inconspicuous closet or alcove once homework is com-

pleted.

6. The Kitchen Table Despite objections from parents, the kitchen table remains a popular homework spot among kids. There’s just something so appealing (and convenient) about spreading your books and papers across the very surface where your family eats dinner every evening. If this is the study space your kids insist on using, keep it clutter-free by insisting that supplies are stored elsewhere and try to limit other household distractions during homework hours. Creating a designated study space within your home, whether simple or elaborate, sends the message that your family values both homework and education. It’s one of the easiest – but most important – things you can do to help your children achieve school year success. 15 Ideas to Create Magical Birthday Traditions A child’s birthday has got to be the most anticipated day of the year. If your child is like most, as soon as the party is over they are already talking about what they want to do or get for their next birthday—364 days away! I know every parent wants their child’s birthday to be spectacular, and each year, as your child gets older and their wants become greater, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of trying to outdo the previous year’s birthday. Growing up with three siblings, one of which has his birthday only two days after mine, my parents tried their best to make our birthdays special. Each year on our birthday we would arrive home from school and there would be balloons, gifts and handmade cards around the “Birthday Chair.” As soon as we finished dinner and gobbled up our cake, the birthday child was directed to sit in the birthday chair and would proceed to open up their gifts. It was a magical moment for which I waited all year. On my tenth birthday I received a blue three-speed bike. Aside from that, the only other gift I remember receiving was a small wooden trinket box my

mother had polyurethaned with some random magazine pictures and a groovy picture of me with a “shag” haircut and the date 1976 on the inside. That was thirty-six years ago—and I still have my trinket box today. Now that I am a mother of two children, I look at birthdays in a whole new light. I think back on my own childhood memories and realize that I now have the control to create family birthday traditions for my children. We are all so busy these days, and finding simple, inexpensive ways to turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary birthday celebration may take a little time and creativity, but it certainly doesn’t have to empty your wallet. What children want more than anything on their birthday is to feel like it is their own special day. So find ways to help celebrate it with them. Here are 15 ways you can start your own birthday traditions to create some magical moments that your children will remember for years to come.

The night before your child’s birthday, decorate the house or their room with balloons, confetti, flowers or a homemade banner.

Host a Charitable Birthday Party

Teach Your Kids the Gift of Giving In grade school my son loved celebrating his summer birthday with a big party that included family, friends and everyone in his class. But after the last slice of cake was eaten and all the guests had gone home there was still one activity left, opening the pile of gifts. It became overwhelming and reached the point where his birthday seemed bigger than Christmas. It was time for a lesson in giving. If your child is overloaded with gifts on his or her birthday, or if you feel it is time to teach the gift of giving, consider hosting a charitable birthday party this year. Your child will still enjoy celebrating his or her big day with friends and family. But instead of bringing a gift, ask your guests to bring a donation to a charity of your child’s choice. So your child won’t completely miss out on the new bike they’d been hoping for, limit gift giving to just family members. Or one big present from mom and dad. Here are some ideas to get the party started:

FOR YOUR SPORTY CHILD

Consider an activity like swimming, soccer, indoor ice skating, miniature golf, bowling, a bounce house at home or an indoor inflatables destination. Ask your guests to bring new or used shoes and clothing for Soles4Souls (soles4souls.org). This organization distributes donations to the needy in the United States and countries in Central and South America and Africa. Or find a local charity that accepts used athletic equipment to help sports leagues for underprivileged youth in your area. Or check out the website sportsgift.org that donates new equipment to needy kids around the world so they too, can enjoy the fun of

sports. Then ask your guests to round up their kids’ old sports gear to donate or ask them to purchase something new.

FOR THE ANIMAL LOVER

Contact your local humane society to find out if they host kid’s birthday parties. If not, throw the party at home and have the kids make toys, blankets or anything else your humane society suggests for their homeless pets. Or take a trip to the zoo. Ask your guests to donate to the World Wildlife fund (worldwildlife.org) and they can adopt an animal they’d like to help. Adoptable animals include elephants, penguins, tigers and panda bears. Or, if you’re brave enough, throw a party with the local lizard guy at your house. Encourage guests to make donations to Heifer International (heifer.org) and let kids pick from a gift of goats, a present of pigs or any of the other animals Heifer International will provide to needy families in third world countries. The National Wildlife Federation (nwf.org) also maintains an adopt an animal program. With a donation you can adopt a gray wolf, harp seal or great horned owl to name a few.

FOR YOUR LITTLE CHEF

These days cooking is all the rage and it isn’t just for adults anymore. Try hosting a cooking party for your little food lover. Check to see if there is a local venue like a specialty grocery store or cooking school that hosts parties for kids. Or a business that will come to your home and conduct a class. Or even a mobile culinary school. If not, use your own kitchen and host a pizza making party. Provide chef hats and individual pizza crusts for each child and a variety

of toppings and let them make their own pie. Or make homemade ice cream and provide a choice of toppings like fruit, chocolate or caramel sauce, candies, or crushed cookies. Ask your guests to bring food to donate to your local food pantry.

HOST A HAPPY DOLL PARTY

If your child just wants a simple but fun birthday party without a specific theme; host a cake and ice cream, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, musical chairs, and piñata kind of party that you may have enjoyed as a child. Consider donating to the children’s ward of a local hospital or to Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities. Or collect books and school supplies to donate to a church or other organization that helps local kids in need. And if you want to send a little something home with your generous guests, say goodbye to the junk of the goody bag and try one of these simple ideas instead: make a craft like a friendship bracelet or a rubber band bracelet, ice cream cone gift certificate, local kid’s restaurant small gift certificate, sidewalk chalk, small book, homemade snacks like granola, trail mix or muffins (be sure to check for allergies.) Carving Out Traditions “Momma, I don’t want to,” my five-year-old complained. I tried to convince my youngest child, Matthew, to begin carving his pumpkin. I loved carving scary pumpkins with the kids every Halloween. It’s what our family had always done. We created frightening faces and then took pictures of the kids all dressed up and holding their ghoulish jack-o’-lanterns. Even as a child I’d looked forward to the end of October every year. So my son’s anti-Halloween behavior baffled me. Fresh from a nearby farmer’s market the children’s three pumpkins were lined up on our kitchen table ready to be transformed. My oldest child grabbed a piece of paper and drew a scary cat face with whiskers and ears. “Do you think this will scare Papa when he gets home from work?” she asked. I assured her it was very frightening. My younger daughter drew a face with sharp teeth and mean eyebrows. Orange scrapers

in hand, the girls waited patiently to scoop out the insides and then maneuver their serrated, childsafe carving knives. I gripped a paring knife and cut out the tops for each of the girls’ pumpkins. “Matthew,” I said. “Draw something on your pumpkin, so we can cut the face out.” “I don’t want to,” he said. “Are you sure you don’t want to draw a jack-o’-lantern face?” I asked. He shook his head. I truly expected him to change his mind any minute. “Why don’t you want to carve a pumpkin?” I asked, pulling him close. Matthew grabbed my hand and tugged me into the living room. We plopped on the couch and he leaned in and mumbled something into my festive Halloween sweater. I pulled him away from snuggle position so I could understand what he said. “Tell me again.” “I don’t want the girls to make fun of me.”

We both looked through the doorway into the kitchen as the girls compared their gruesome ideas. “They can’t hear you out here,” I assured him. “Whisper it to me.” He reluctantly breathed out the words, “I’m afraid of pumpkin slime.” I resisted the urge to giggle. Seriously? I had always taken great glee in creepy decorations, scary costumes and ghastly pumpkins. I wanted my son to carve a pumpkin, and was kind of shocked at how strongly I felt. I realized that I didn’t want to break with tradition and the wonderful Halloween memories we’d create. I looked at the girls, busy with the carving process, and then down at Matthew, chewing on his lip. I really liked our scary pumpkin carving custom. I stopped myself at that moment and wondered what I was doing. I didn’t want to force him to make a pumpkin my way. Was I willing to possibly taint his memories of Halloween just to follow a tradition I’d made up? After all, there isn’t just one way to make a Halloween pumpkin. I’d made up my mind.

“You don’t have to carve your pumpkin,” I told Matthew. “We can use markers and paints to put a face on your pumpkin.” “Can I do it out here instead of by the scary slime?” he asked quietly. “Of course,” I said. He looked relieved. Matthew drew a happy, toothy face right onto his pumpkin. The girls didn’t seem to mind that Matt was making a different kind of jack-o’-lantern. Later that evening, my kids lined up for our annual Halloween photo. My two girls, dressed as a ghoulish mummy and a wicked witch, both held spooky, lit-up jack-o’-lanterns. Just a bit apart from the girls stood my son dressed as cuddly-looking teddy bear. His little pumpkin boasted a black marker face with mismatched eyes, a lop-sided smile and correction-fluid white teeth. In the end, I hadn’t fixed Matthew’s fears, but for the moment, I’d been flexible enough to solve the immediate problem, and kept our tradition somewhat intact. That was enough. Anyway, I was sure that the next year he’d want to carve a scary pumpkin.

Make Halloween Less Scary with Stay Away Monster Spray After a young child watches a scary movie or is frightened by a Halloween costume, parents should reach for a can of anti-monster spray before bedtime, says Theresa Kruczek, a counseling psychology professor at Ball State University. “Preschool children and those in early elementary school often have a difficult time with Halloween,” she says. “Children this age often struggle with separating fantasy from reality and a result they may get confused and think the scary elements of Halloween are real.”

“After a frightening experience, children may have nightmares. They really can’t tell us too much about the dream, but we can take some precautions to ward off those dreams by using a can of air freshener, otherwise known as anti-monster spray, to keep monsters at bay. Monsters don’t like nice-smelling stuff.” Kruczek also advises:

• Limit preschoolers to 30 minutes or less of activities, including trick-ortreating, and only during daylight hours.

• Ask friends and strangers to take off masks to show children that there really is a person under the costume.

• Parents and siblings should never wear masks around youngsters afraid of such items.

• In families with children of varying age ranges, allow each youngster to participate in age-appropriate activities.

• Avoid haunted houses unless the facility offers age-appropriate activities.

“Just because you love haunted houses doesn’t mean your 4-yearold will,” Kruczek says. “Parents are in the best position to know what frightens their child and to help them cope with Halloween. If kids freak out during a scary movie, they’ll freak out at a haunted house or when someone in a scary outfit comes by.”
