Farewell from Kathy Zember Dear Preceptors, I wanted to let you know that my last day at UT will be November 30th. I am taking the next big step forward to RETIREMENT and am looking forward to it with great anticipation. Thank you all for being such a joy to work with over the past 20 years. It has been an amazing experience and I have loved working with each one of you so much. I have felt such a personal bond between us and it will be a big adjustment to lose that contact with you. I will truly miss you. Thank you for the many outstanding rotation opportunities that you have so willingly provided to our students. Thank you for your involvement in various University committees all with the goal of enhancing our pharmacy program at UT. Wishing you the very best! Kathy Zember

2014 PRECEPTORS OF THE YEAR (Continued from page 1)

2014 IPPE Preceptor of the Year Najwa Kassem, R.Ph. Pharmacy Owner/Manager Westgate Family Pharmacy Najwa loves her job and loves her customers. She has been precepting our University of Toledo IPPE and APPE students since 2001. Originally from Lebanon, Najwa graduated with her pharmacy degree and entered into a world that was dominated by only men. She later opened her own pharmacy in Lebanon and was very successful. In 1995 she moved to Toledo Ohio and began working as a manager with the Rite Aid Corporation. Najwa’s passion was to be an independent pharmacist and make a difference. In October 2012, she opened Westgate Family Pharmacy on Central Avenue in Toledo. Here she has the time and freedom to connect with her customers on a one-onone basis. Her pharmacy offers free delivery, immunizations, Blister Packaging and MTM.

INFLUENZA VACCINES Effective immediately, we require all our University of Toledo Pharmacy students to attain an Influenza Vaccine. Students are required to provide proof of their vaccination no later than November 1, 2014. Dean Johnnie Early Honored by Toledo Nonprofit Author and entrepreneur Steve Saint once said, “Your story is the greatest legacy that you will leave to your friends. It's the longest-lasting legacy you will leave to your heirs.” In this spirit, Dean Early adds his story to that of the African American Legacy Project, a local nonprofit that is dedicated to “documenting and preserving the history of Northwest Ohio’s African American communities and their impact and influence upon Toledo and the greater world community”. This fall, the AALP will honor Dr. Early with its Legend Award, recognizing his achievements in leadership, service and academia as part of Toledo’s history. Nominated for his decades-long

career as a pharmacy dean as well as his ongoing service to the pharmacy and African American communities, Dr. Early lives his commitment to diversity and student success. His story, which carried him from humble beginnings in a small Georgia town to national leadership positions in pharmacy organizations, is indeed worthy of recognition. “I am honored to receive this recognition,” Dr. Early said. Most important to my personal legacy are student-centeredness, global outreach and diversity, all of which are cornerstones of our college’s mission and goals.” Dr. Early will be recognized alongside three other honorees at a gala celebration on October 3-4, 2014.
