UT Community Care Clinic by Kyle Rako & Tyler Tomasek The University of Toledo Community Care Clinic is a student-run organization comprised of dedicated volunteers from the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing that provides free, comprehensive healthcare to underinsured patients at clinics within the greater Toledo area. Students are involved in all aspects of the clinic’s operations and perform managing, staffing, and fundraising roles. Assisting the students are local practitioners from various professions who kindly volunteer their time to see patients and mentor future healthcare professionals. Every Thursday at 6 p.m., the Cedar Creek Church on South Byrne Road is transformed into a medical clinic known as the South Toledo Clinic. The church serves as an ideal setting for a clinic, and is complete with patient waiting areas, private exam rooms, and a miniature pharmacy. On an average night, the clinic is visited by approximately 50 patients from all walks of life. The clinic does not close until all patients are seen and sometimes will be open as late as midnight. Student pharmacists serve as invaluable members of the clinical team. P3 students are paired with a medical student. Together, they update the patient’s medical profile, take a detailed history of the patient’s current problem, and consult with the physician on the patient’s drug therapy. Our P2 students serve in a dispensing role in the clinic pharmacy and also provide medication counseling. It’s an opportunity for students to apply knowledge learned in class, communicate with and develop empathy for real patients, and interact with other healthcare professionals. For all these above reasons, clinic participation has become so popular that the eight weekly volunteer slots are consistently filled and even booked for months in advance. Continued on page 4
