Moving Days As you can see in the photo, the façade of the new pharmacy building is nearly complete, and it’s an impressive, expansive space. Your College of Pharmacy is beginning the process of packing for the big haul—the transition to the health science campus. The final steps are being made now, including designating phone numbers and scheduling moving dates. In a short time, there will be tours of the new facility and the dedication, which is scheduled for Friday, September 3, 2010. Students and faculty are excited about getting settled on the Health Science Campus and getting to know the new digs. We look forward to showing you around very soon!

Researcher’s Work on Green Tea Heating Up Two decades ago, most Americans were green when it came to green tea, in spite of its centuries-old reputation in China as a medicinal quaff. Today you can find even coffee devotees sipping Dragon Pearl and Chinese Gunpowder, lured by claims of antioxidant properties in the straw-colored brew. More professional is the interest Dr. Salahuddin Ahmed, UT assistant professor of pharmacology, takes in the subject. For years, he’s been researching the potential of a green-tea compound called epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Find out more about Dr. Ahmed’s research

Dr. Curtis Black honored with 2010 APhA Merit Award Dr. Curtis Black, '74, is the 2010 recipient of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Merit Award. The achievement was recognized at the APhA Convention in Washington, DC during the Second General Session on Sunday, March 14, 2010. This national award recognizes individual pharmacy practitioners for significant contributions to pharmacy practice. Dr. Black recently completed a yearlong sabbatical with the Ohio Pharmacists Association, during which he focused on advancing medication therapy management (MTM) programs throughout the state of Ohio.

In addition to receiving the 2010 APhA Merit Award, Dr. Curtis Black is also featured on the cover of the April edition of Pharmacy Times magazine. UT students and faculty are included in the article about medication therapy management (MTM) in the state of Ohio.

College of Pharmacy hosts HRSA Learning session The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy served as a host site for the national broadcast of Health Resources and Services Administration’s Patient Safety and Clinical Pharmacy Services Collaborative Learning Session 2. The session was held Thursday, May 13. Read more

In Their Own Words Each year’s Commencement Exercises mark the summit of student achievement as the college gathers with family, friends and faculty to celebrate a new graduating class of scientists and pharmacists. Kevin Kissling, Kristen Monarch-Mocek, and Annie Nguyen were the three PharmD valedictorians, and Haley Sauder was the BSPS valedictorian. Dr. Kevin Kissling, PharmD ’10, who spoke at the spring commencement, asks where new graduates will find their motivation now that grades are not the determinants of their success or failure. Student Pharmacists bring home achievement awards The UT APhA-ASP chapter won two awards at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition. The chapter won the Membership Achievement Award for having the largest increase in membership from 2007-2008 to 20082009. Of the 112 colleges of pharmacy, the UT chapter was selected as the Most Improved Chapter. This award is given to the chapter that has shown the most progress from previous years. UT’s APhA-ASP boasts increased membership, expanded patient care projects, and legislation and policy efforts. These are the chapter’s first ever achievement awards. Read more

What a Day: Pharmacy day camps engage Toledo students Pharmacy day camps are helping to generate interest in pharmacy among students from Toledo Public Schools.

The College of Pharmacy held two day camps, one for students from the Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls and another for students from Lincoln Academy for Boys. The pharmacy day camps, which are supported by a diversity grant from the Walgreens Corporation, were held in mid-May. Sixth grade students from both schools advanced their understanding of the tremendous opportunities a pharmacy career can offer them.

Students compounded a hand sanitizing gel as they learned how pharmacists make a variety of dosage forms to deliver medications to patients. They also toured a Toledo-area pharmacy to see first-hand the technology and work settings of pharmacists.

ProMedica and UT enter a new partnership A new partnership will allow UT to oversee clinical education and research across ProMedica system. Read more
