Chemistry, along with Aparna Raghavan and Jatin Tulsulkar and Shadia Nada, was recently accepted for publication in Neurochemistry International. The paper is entitled “A derivative of the CRMP2 binding compound lanthionine ketimine provides neuroprotection in a mouse model of cerebral ischemia.” Coauthors Aparna Raghavan and Jatin Tulsulkar are graduate students in Dr. Shah’s lab, and Dr. Shadia Nada, who recently earned a PhD in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry, is a research assistant professor for the college.

The Department of Pharmacology in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toledo, chaired by Dr. William Messer, has received formal approval for implementing a Ph.D. program in Experimental Therapeutics. Experimental Therapeutics is the integration of basic and applied sciences focused on the study and development of new treatments for human disease. Research in experimental therapeutics seeks to understand human diseases from the molecular level to the whole organism in order to develop rational approaches for new pharmacological treatments. In addition, experimental therapeutics includes the development of new therapies through systematic investigation at increasing levels of complexity, ranging from individual molecules and proteins to cellular and tissue-based assays and to the whole organism. The purpose of the program is to train students at the doctoral level who can translate discoveries in the laboratory to therapies in a clinical setting. The program provides a bridge between the Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and

Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degrees, and matches the strengths of our educational and research environment. By its very nature, Experimental Therapeutics is a multi-disciplinary field, drawing on a variety of scientific areas, including but not limited to pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, physiology, immunology, pharmaceutics, pathology, statistics and engineering. As such, our program is open to faculty from a number of disciplines outside the Department of Pharmacology, thus enhancing the potential research experience of our students. Examples include developing collaborations between Drs. Surya Nauli, Department of Pharmacology, and Bina Joe in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the area of hypertension and between Drs. Youssef Sari, Department of Pharmacology, and Bryan Yamamoto in the Department of Neurosciences in the area of drug and alcohol abuse. The program received formal approval by the Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents in late August, thus culminating Continued on page 2
