Dr. Curtis D. Black DISTINGUISHED UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR EMERITUS At the Spring Commencement, The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences had the opportunity to recognize a faculty member who has touched the lives many students over the past two and a half decades. This summer, Dr. Curtis D. Black retires, but the impact he has made on the college and on pharmacy practice in the state of Ohio continues to resonate.

Dr. Black has held the Merck Professorship of Clinical Pharmacy at The University of Toledo since 1990. He was recruited in 1991 to establish the Doctor of Pharmacy program at The University of Toledo. Having completed his PhD, which focused on the effects of dextrose, amino acids and electrolytes on the stability of intravenous lipid emulsions, at Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences, he joined the faculty at Purdue and served as the associate department chair and associate professor.

Dr. Black’s research has focused on developing pharmaceutical preparations for various systemic and dermatological disorders, and more recently on engaging pharmacists to provide medication therapy management (MTM) services to their patients. Continue reading

Each year, the College invites alumni and friends to participate in the White Coat Mentor program, which allows students and alumni to connect meaningfully through philanthropy and interaction.

White Coat Mentors, for both the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Doctor of Pharmacy programs, sponsor the purchase of a student’s white coat. The coat, which is presented to P1 students at the Professional Advancement Ceremony in the fall, welcomes students to the professional division with a note from the sponsor to encourage the student and invite them to communicate with the mentor. Howard C. Ansel, PhD

FACULTY NOTES

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT, 2011 Teacher of the Year Dr. Howard C. Ansel’s legacy of excellence and service to the profession of pharmacy began even before he graduated with honors from The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy in 1955. After earning his bachelor’s degree at The University of Toledo, he completed his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at University of Florida before joining the faculty at The University of Toledo as an assistant professor of Pharmacy.

Dr. Ansel joined the faculty of the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy in 1962, and after heading the Department of Pharmacy, he stepped into the deanship where he served for 14 years. After returning to full-time teaching, he was named the Panoz Professor of Pharmacy, earning the college’s first endowed professorship. His tenure as dean was quite successful, leading to the growth of the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy’s national reputation for professional education, basic and clinical research, postgraduate continuing education, and alumni development.

During his academic career, Dr. Ansel earned numerous recognitions and honors and held a number of important posts, including Chairman of the Council of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy; Consultant to the U.S.

Food and Drug Administration; Chairman of the Health Education Committee of the University System of Georgia; and Drug Educator for the State Department of Education.

Included among his many contributions to pharmacy education are a number of publications in the field, including three widely used textbooks with which the students and faculty at The University of Toledo are familiar: Pharmaceutical Calculations, Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Drug Delivery Systems, and Introduction to Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms.

These titles have been translated and published in Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Portuguese, Egyptian, and Indonesian editions.

This year’s Teacher of the Year, voted upon by the graduating Doctor of Pharmacy class, is Dr. Diane Cappelletty, associate professor of clinical pharmacy.

Dr. Cappelletty is Co-Director of the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory and currently serves on the FDA Advisory Committee to the Division of Anti-Infective and Ophthalmology Products, for which she provides Clinical Pharmacology expertise.

Professor of the Year

For his exceptional professional accomplishments and for his contributions to pharmacy education, The University of Toledo proudly conferred upon Dr. Howard C. Ansel the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

The graduating Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences class selects the Professor of the Year, and this year’s class selected Dr. Jerry Ne samon y.

Nesamony is an assistant professor of pharmaceutics in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. He has been with the UT College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for three years.

Valedictorians Galore!

Katherine Cochran, Nicole Coogan, Ashley Deley, Christine Haavisto, and Lindsey Wasco were the five valedictorians from the 2011 Doctor of Pharmacy class. Steven Lombardo was the valedictorian for the BSPS graduating class. In addition to excelling in their academic studies, all six valedictorians have shown leadership through participation in student and profession al organizations and activities.

Katherine Cochran is the recipient of the Rose Marie ReussThomson Scholarship, the Wilma Chamberlain Memorial Scholarship, The University of Toledo Tower Prestige Scholarship, the Levis Leadership Scholarship and the Wadsworth High School’s Pay-it-Forward Scholarship, in addition to remaining on the Dean’s List and President’s List. After graduation, Katherine will complete a residency in ambulatory care.

Nicole Coogan is a member of American P h a r m a c i s t s Association, Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity, and Student Alumni Association. In addition to spending four academic years on the President’s and Dean’s Lists, Nicole has earned numerous scholarships and awards, including the Wal-Mart Scholarship, the Rose Marie Reuss-Thomson Scholarship, the Merck Medco Award, and the AurGroup Credit Union Scholarship.

Ashley Deley’s honors include the President’s List, the Leroy Russel Scholarship and the

Tower of Excellence Scholarship.

During her rotation at The University of Toledo Medical Center, Ashley was involved in Rxpectations, a medication education program that helps patients understand the purpose and correct usage of their medications. After graduation, Ashley will practice in retail pharmacy with a focus on offering medication therapy management (MTM) services.

Christine Haavisto graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of S c i e n c e i n Pharmaceutical Sciences degree from The University of Toledo in 2009. In addition to her membership in Rho Chi, the Academic Honor Society in Pharmacy, and American Pharmacists Association, Christine is a volunteer for Junior Achievement, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Red Cross, and the Perry Center. Following graduation, Christine plans to practice as a pharmacist for Giant Eagle.

Lindsey Wasco graduated summa cum laude from The University of Toledo in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in

Pharmaceutical Sciences degree and a minor in chemistry.

Lindsey plans to complete a PGY1 Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Virginia following graduation.

Steven Lombardo, valedictorian for the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program, graduated with honors as a Pharmacology/Toxicology major. Steven is actively involved in university and professional organizations, and he is establishing his career in research. He has co-authored one publication and has made research presentations at several conferences.

The Fulbright Scholarship National Screening Committee has selected Steven as a finalist, and the final decision on his application will be made by The University of Sydney, Australia and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Following graduation, Steven will pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience.
