PRECEPTOR APPRECIATION LUNCHEON The Preceptor Appreciation Luncheon will be held on April 18, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The University of Toledo Student Union, Room 2582, immediately following the Preceptor Forum. There is no charge for the luncheon ,and you are welcome to attend just the luncheon, just the forum, or both. Preceptor of the Year awards (Steve Smith, APPE and Don Sheroian, IPPE) will be presented right before the luncheon. If you are planning to bring your student, please be sure you register them as well as yourself. Registration closes April 11th at midnight. Changes to the Experiential Management System—CoreTrax The University of Toledo has been working with Jonathan Rios, one of our PharmD alumni, to create CoreTrax, our new Experiential Management System to replace E*Value. We will fully convert to CoreTrax by May 1, 2013. CoreTrax is intuitive, easy to maneuver, and built specifically for pharmacy student and preceptor needs. Information such as login and password were sent on February 21st, and an orientation on CoreTrax will be sent to you over the next few weeks. Please feel free to contact Kathy Zember or Karen Mockensturm with any questions about CoreTrax.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work very closely with many students at The University of Toledo. It is a very enriching experience. The students at our site experience a different rotation each month they are here. Each month is highlighted with different outreach events on campus or projects that the students help complete. I try to highlight the practical knowledge and skillset needed as a pharmacist. At the beginning of the rotation, I work with each

student to further develop their weaknesses and strengths.

Many of the academic activities that the students participate in at our site are simple, such as a list of drug counseling, but are quite effective for the students. These simple exercises give the students the confidence that they need to discuss medication issues with patients. Students love to be engaged and feel like part of the pharmacy team. Students want to be able to connect with the staff. The pharmacy staff plays an essential role with the education of the students.

It is a team effort to give each student an experience that molds them for the future profession of pharmacy.

My best IPPE experience was one where I was exposed to the real culture of the hospital. I was able to experience a typical day as the director of pharmacy. Over the course of this experience I attended several meetings with my preceptor and was even allowed to contribute to the meeting. My participation in the meetings was well received and appreciated. My tip is to allow the students to experience all the different aspects of the pharmacist's role.

way, please feel free to reinforce this material with students as you see fit.

7th ANNUAL FACULTY AUCTION The 7th Annual Faculty Charity Auction was held on February 6 th and was organized by Alpha Zeta Omega pharmacy fraternity.

The auction benefits the medical missions to Honduras and Guatemala. This year’s auction netted over $7,800.00, thanks to our UT students and generous donations from th Hometown Pharmacy and A packed house for the 7 annual Faculty Auction UT alumna, Susan Middendorf. On hand from Hometown Pharmacy to present the donation were Mike Stein and Ian Matthews. Money from the auction will be used to purchase medicines to bring aid to over 2,000 patients in the small towns of both countries. Additional Dr. Vince Mauro with one of the support from the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences provides materials favorite annual items to bid on: the Justin “Biebler” Dancing Beaver for the P1s to compound 5% permethrin cream, which will be used to treat scabies.

Basket This year, APPE students Katelyn Barnhouse, Alyse Jablonski and Danielle McConnell, will accompany Dr. Diane Cappelletty and Dr. Richard Paat, along with medical students, physician assistants and nurse practitioners on the medical mission to Honduras. Errica Owens was the APPE student who accompanied Dr. Jessica Mullin and Dr. Richard Paat on the medical mission to Guatemala.

Preceptor/Site Updates In an effort to assist you, we would like to make sure our students are better prepared before beginning their rotations at your site. If you have any site specific requirements such as flu shots, drug testing, HIPAA training, orientation, etc., please let us know and we will add this information to your site’s profile. Also, if you have another pharmacist at your site who would like to be listed as a preceptor, please forward their contact information to either Kathy Zember or Karen Mockensturm, and we will be happy to enter them into our system.

THANK YOU, STEERING COMMITTEES! In January, The Experiential Team met with both our Northeast and Northwest Ohio Steering Committee members. Some items discussed were changes to the curriculum, the addition of IPPE weeks, teaching techniques, and an overview of the admissions process.

Many of the changes in our curriculum are a result of the discussions at these meetings, and we welcome input from our preceptors. Please contact us if you are interested in serving on our Steering Committee. This requires a oneyear commitment, and we meet twice each year.

Pharmacy students plan Script Your Future events Patient non-adherence leads to poor health outcomes, more medical procedures and increases in hospital visits that cost Americans $290 billion per year. Our University of Toledo pharmacy students participated in Script Your Future, a national campaign raising awareness of the importance of patience medication adherence.

“We are trying to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the lines of communication open between patients and their health-care providers,” said Michelle Carey, UT pharmacy student and chair of the University’s Script Your Future initiative.

Our students have incorporated Script Your Future into our Kroger Wellness events held weekly at local Kroger Pharmacies. Additional locations for these events are Walgreens, local senior centers and UT Rockets basketball games.
