material with students as you see fit.

PRECEPTOR OF THE YEAR The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences would like to congratulate our 2012 Preceptors of the Year. Recognitions will be made at The University of Toledo’s Preceptor Forum April 18, 2013.

Steve Smith, MS, RPh, BCACP has been named our APPE Preceptor of the Year. Steve has been precepting students for The University of Toledo, Ohio Northern and Findlay for many years. His ambulatory care APPE rotation offers a variety of experiences for students including inpatient rounding, outpatient disease state management, topic discussions and journal clubs. Students’ comments on the nomination forms include “…he really helped me learn and grow as a professional” and “he is a great professional example dedicated to furthering pharmaceutical care.” Steve’s vision for the future of pharmacy is his greatest contribution to the profession and to the education of our students. He motivates our students to expand pharmacy services and drive the profession forward.

Brad Sheroian, Pharm.D. has been named our IPPE Preceptor of the Year. Brad provides introductory experiences at the Kroger Pharmacy in Sylvania, Ohio for P1 - P3 students. Brad was nominated by several students with comments like “providing a great environment to practice Pharmacy,” “keeping a short wall between him as the preceptor and students,” “inspires students to participate in all pharmacy related tasks,” “easy to communicate with, listens and corrects mistakes without being judgmental,” and “flexible with the demanding schedules of the PharmD students.”

The Experiential Team would like to say thank you the many preceptors who were nominated and have dedicated their time providing our students with an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom.

RXPECTATIONS In an effort to assist in improving patient care and patient satisfaction at The University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC), the UTMC Pharmacy Department and UT-AAUP members within The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Department of Pharmacy Practice have collaborated to develop a patient education program called R xPectations. The purpose of this program is to educate our patients on their new medications. While counseling the patients, we discuss why they are taking their medications (indication for medication), the potential side effects of those medications, and any questions or concerns they might have about their medications. The information that is provided to patients addresses two of the questions that appear on the patient satisfaction survey.

RxPectations is primarily delivered by our student pharmacists who are in their final year of the Pharm.D. program and are completing their experiential rotations. Pharmacy interns and pharmacy residents help to deliver the education as well. R xPectations is currently overseen by Russ Smith (UTMC Director of Pharmacy) and Anita Stonehill-Ridner (Pharmacy Practice faculty and AAUP member).

Service Learning In October, our P2 students headed to Harvard Elementary School to do a presentation about the difference between medicine and candy. Their audience was 1st and 3rd graders, which was estimated to be about 100 children. Our students did a Power Point presentation and passed out a word search with a piece of candy to all the 1st graders and crossword puzzle with a piece of candy for the 3rd graders.

STREAMLINING THE PROCESS OF WRITING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION By Anita Stonehill-Ridner with Julie Murphy With the number of students now pursuing residencies, this time of year can be overwhelming with requests to write letters of recommendations. Some of us have found it’s beneficial to provide the student with a list of information they should give to those writing their letters; this can save a significant amount of time and make the entire process more manageable (especially if you are writing letters for more than one student). Because we know your time is valuable, we want to share with you some suggestions that have been developed by several faculty members to make this process more efficient. The link below provides information that you may want to request from students for whom you are writing letters. Please note that for Fall 2012, ASHP has launched the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). It is a web-based tool that brings residency application materials together in one location. At this point, residency programs are not required to use PhORCAS for their application process, so check with the student to see if their programs of interest are using this process. More information about the PhORCAS process can be found at: http://www.ashp.org/phorcas. Preceptor Spotlight Doug Cornelius shares his thoughts on molding student pharmacists into effective practitioners.

I became a Pharmacist because of the positive influence I received from the father of a friend of mine. He was a pharmacist who owned an independent pharmacy, and I appreciated his commitment to the community. He was not only dedicated to providing excellent customer service, but he also loved the business aspect of pharmacy as well.

He taught me how to handle the day-to-day operations involved with running a pharmacy. This sometimes meant teaching me how to deal with obstacles that may come my way.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Give your students an eyefull! As students, we love to see new things and get exposed to as much as possible. I had a great preceptor who pulled strings so that I could sit in the OR and talk to the nurse anesthetist and watch as she used a slew of medications during surgery. Students like to be engaged! Doing this may include showing an interesting procedure, getting your student involved in compounding, or taking the time to show them new technology that is advancing pharmacy and/or patient safety (e.g., hemoglobin A1C machines, smarter IV pumps). Each pharmacy offers something that a student likely hasn't seen before, so try to pull your student aside and get them involved. ~Rachel Curran

READERS’ CORNER

From a patient care perspective, an individual practitioner can help only a limited number of patients in a single day, month, or year. As a preceptor, every student you train becomes an extension of your ability to care for patients. A multiplier, if you will. After several years your students will also have student, and the effect is further multiplied.

If you truly invest in improving the outcomes of patients, there is no better use of your time than training other practitioners to do just that.
